PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I cannot believe that it will be December already, where has the year gone? The fall weather has been favourable according to Calgary standards. There is always the un-expected storm here and there so enjoy.

On behalf of the KCA board, have a safe, healthy and re-laxing Merry Christmas/festive holiday season.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR’S

Volunteers! Volunteers! Thank-you for supporting your community to make it a better place to live and enjoy. See you at the next event.

I am reiterating last year’s message; take time to enjoy your family and perhaps help the less fortunate by vol-unteering your time at many venues throughout the city that require assistance. The main link is for Link to Website: http://www.calgarycharityevents.ca/pg.aspx?id=1920 and the Calgary Food Bank Volun-teers - Link to Website: http://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/volunteer/ many hands accomplish many things - great opportunity to introduce kids to volunteering.

I would like to thank all the Kingsland residents that came out to support the community at our Annual General Meeting (AGM). It was wonderful to see familiar faces and new faces - please continue to be a voice for our community.

I will close with a quote: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” - Theodore Roosevelt.

Christine Dombroski - PresidentKingsland Community Association

KINGSLAND PRESCHOOL NEWS

We are feeling the chill in the air and changing of the seasons at the preschool. The children have established routines and are forming friendships and bonds with each other – which allows us to settle in and focus on play and curriculum. We have spent the month of November with the four-year-olds working on a character study of The Gruffalo. The children spent time working independently, drawing and imagining what they thought he might look like and how he might act. We then came together in groups to draw, paint, create and write stories about our own imaginary creatures.

The three-year-olds have spent November exploring dino-saurs and volcanoes. We learned about the many kinds of dinosaurs, what they ate, where they lived, what they looked like and what might have happened to them for them to be-come extinct. Of course, that led us to volcanoes and what can be more fun than erupting volcanoes!

We have been collecting for Senior Secret Santa and we were able to fill many stockings for this amazing charity. Once, again our children were asked to create artwork for these seniors and once again we were happy to do this. We love this relationship that we have formed with this senior’s char-ity group.

We still have a few spots in some of our classes for this school year if you have a child that is 3 or 4 years of age.

We will be holding our Open House for Fall 2019 classes on January 29th for 5:00-7:30.

To whom it may concern,

The Federation of Calgary Communities (the Federation) is the support organization to over 230 small non-profit organiza-tions, including Calgary’s 151 community associations. These 151 volunteer-run organizations positively impact the life of Calgarians every day by offering endless opportunities close to home, fostering a sense of belonging by bringing neighbours together, and being a voice for community life educating and informing residents on important issues and activities taking place in their neighbourhood.

One of the main tools community associations use to keep their residents informed on what’s going on in the community is their community newsletter. Calgarians have grown to rely on these monthly publications to find news and updates from their community association, City Councillor, provincial MLA, as well as other stakeholders like the City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and much more.

Community newsletters not only keep residents informed on important happenings, but they also help foster Calgary’s uniquely small town feel in our large, urban city. These month-ly newsletters have grown to include resident and volunteer profiles, showcasing neighbourhood assets, local business fea-tures, and more. In doing so, community newsletters truly help community associations work towards being hubs for neigh-bourhood life by showcasing the many people and places who make the community a great place to live, work, and play.

For over a decade, community associations have been fortu-nate enough to have their monthly community newsletter published and delivered for free by the publishing company. In recent years, with the economic decline in Calgary, this luxury is now at risk, with community newsletter publishers strug-gling to find advertisers to offset their costs, and Canada Post’s delivery fees continually rising.

The Federation of Calgary Communities believes that commu-nity newsletters are essential to community life here in Calgary, and we support the value they bring to all Calgarians, organiza-tions, businesses, and the city of Calgary as a whole. Without funding support or reduced delivery fees for community news-letter publishers to continue providing these monthly publica-tions for our city’s community associations at low or no cost, we are at risk of losing these essential resources that connect Calgarians to both their neighbourhood and their city.

Sincerely,Leslie EvansExecutive Director

Dear Friends,

What a year it has been! We’ve worked together to tackle the need for more openness at City Hall. We’ve highlighted the need to genuinely listen to Calgarians, we’ve brought a brand-new focus to “living within our means” and doing more with the same, just as many families and businesses have been forced to since the downturn began several years ago.

While many of us were counting on a significant economic re-covery, it hasn’t happened yet. I continue to see and hear from you how our city continues to experience some of its most challenging times. Record high unemployment, sky-high com-mercial vacancies in our downtown core, a marginalized en-ergy industry and local businesses going out of business have had a negative compounding effect on the City’s “bad news” budget that was released last month.

I’ve been touched by the incredible support that you’ve given me over the past year as I took on the significant task of chal-lenging the status quo at City Hall. It has been my sincere privi-lege to advocate on your behalf. In that time, I’ve learned that the things that are worth having don’t come easily—but they sure are worth fighting for! I will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our non-profit agencies, our businesses, our energy industry and our citizens to bring your concerns forward and make sure that your voice is heard around the Council table.

I hope that you and your family can join me at this month’s special Holiday Ward 11 Town Hall taking place on Thurs-day, December 6th at the North Glenmore Park Community Centre (2231 Longridge Dr SW) from 7pm-8:30pm. We will be serving up hot chocolate, gingerbread and other treats as a way to say thank you to citizens for all you do for our city. As always, I will be on hand to take your questions, use your sug-gestions, and engage in a discussion as we chart our course for the New Year.

On behalf of my family and the Ward 11 staff, please accept our sincerest wishes to you and your family for a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and all the very best for a happy, healthy and safe holiday season. Please continue to be charitable with those who are less fortunate so that everyone can enjoy peace and joy this time of year. I look forward to an exciting start to 2019!

Respectfully yours,

Jeromy(Ward 11 Councillor and Palliser resident)
