DECEMBER 2019

Board Member’s Message Bob BayerShortly after I started to try to learn to fly fish in mid-2012, I read an article in a fly fishing magazine. It said fly fishing is a lifetime sport. I wasn't certain exactly what that meant. Two months later I was standing in a bend on the Missouri River with a couple of other anglers casting at a pod  of large trout that were rising in a back eddie. I was not having any success. I had a $50 fly  rod and reel and a fly of unknown origin. The angler next to me  was an

older gentleman. He was connecting with 18 inch rainbows about every third or fourth cast. Evidently, I didn't know what I was doing. After about 20 minutes of observing  his laser straight  cast and watching him net six fish, I thought it would be prudent to ask him a couple of questions. He was kind enough to answer my questions. He said the fly he was using was  a tricot spinner pattern that he had developed about 20 years before. He told me about the materials he used. That was total Greek to me. I commented about his deep knowledgeable of Trico bugs. He said, “well I've been fly fishing  for 70 years, you pick these things up along the way”. Indeed. He gave me a couple of flies but unfortunately that was not enough to overcome my awful casting-no fish.

Probably the article in the magazine should have said fly fishing is a sport that takes a lifetime to learn. Our friend Rich Chubon is a very  good example of an angler that made a lifetime commitment to learning more about every aspect of our sport. . He first picked up a fly rod in 1968 and started learning. He never stopped learning: new flies to tie, new materials to use, new equipment and techniques to consider, how  to build and repair rods, and new waters to travel to and fish new species.

December Meeting Details 9th Annual Year-in-Review Slide Show by Mark Shelton

One of the best things about our club is the great people we get to spend time with. We get together to tie flies, learn new fly fishing skills, travel far and wide, eat and drink together, and of course, fly fish in all kinds of places. Each year since 2010 we’ve done a year-end program of member’s trips. I show the slides and club members and I tell a little about our year’s fly-fishing adventures (and misadventures – cameras lost, rods broken, flat tires, boats

broken down, parking tickets…..you get the picture). But hey, if you’re gonna get out there, stuff happens!

2019 was a big year for new and veteran SLFF members and new fishing locations. Come enjoy your slides from Alaska, Baja, New Mexico, Hot Creek and other rivers, the Delta, lake Almanor, local lakes and ponds, Colorado and elsewhere. I always enjoy seeing and hearing about where fellow clubbers have travelled, and as a result, I’ve had some great fishing and travel to places that were vetted by people I know. It’s kind of like going to a fly-fishing show for free.

Come join us in December and enjoy our interactive fly-fishing travelogue. A good time is guaranteed!

Next Fly Tying Session with Jim Snodgrass: Thursday, December 5th at 6:30pm- Odd Fe"ows Ha", San Luis Obispo

Garbage Scud: The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, December 5th at 6:30.  Jim Snodgrass will demonstrate the Garbage Scud. Jim became interested in tying the Garbage Scud after watching a U-Tube video and seeing how a discarded plastic bag could be turned into a scud shell back.  He figured that it was a good pattern to have in his fly box because trout are always looking for scud.

Scuds, crustaceans known as Amphipods, are on a trout’s menu year-round—especially in many tailwaters, spring creeks, and stillwaters. Trout love them because scuds are usually plentiful, easy to catch, and they have high nutritional value. There are almost 100 species of scuds in North America, but they all have the same basic shape, with prominent legs and a curved shell back. Mostly what changes from water to water are the color and size of the scuds.

The takes can be quite subtle with a Garbage Scud, so be ready to set the hook lightly at the slightest hesitation in the fly line or indicator.  Try both fishing the fly on a dead-drift and giving it bursts of very short strips.

Materials:

The following are the material that will be used for the Troutman Hex:

• Thread - 8/0 Uni-thread waxed; camel colored Hook - Dai-Riki 125, size 12

• Weight - Lead wire spool - .010

• Dubbing - Arizona mega synthetic dubbing-light peacockRib - UTC ultra-wire – Copper - Brassie

• Resin - Solarez UV Cure Resin – Bone Dry 5 oz

• Shell Back - Heavy plastic bag

All materials will be supplied except the thread.  Bring 8/0 camel colored waxed Uni-thread.

Remembering Rich Chubon

Rich Chubon – Friend, charter member, and past President of Santa Lucia Fly Fishers

Recognizing our founders:

We did some research and contacted Jack Whitehouse. Our club was founded in 1975. Jack Whitehouse led the effort. Jack said there were about 75 original "founding" members. As noted above Rich Chubon was amongst them. Thanks, Jack, we appreciate it to this day!

SLFF DONATION SPOTLIGHT California Trout

California Trout, or CalTrout, was founded in 1971. Headquartered in San Francisco, its mission is to work to ensure wild fish thrive in healthy waters for a better California. They presently support over 30 projects across six regions, from San Diego to the Oregon border.

CalTrout operates with three main priorities: restoring steelhead and salmon; saving imperiled native trout and protecting California’s blue ribbon waters.

To move forward on these priorities, they are focused on five initiatives: protect the best; reconnect habitat; integrate wild fish and working landscapes; steward source water areas and restore estuaries. Their hard work, year over year, has produced tangible results for our native waters and we are glad to support this organization.

UPCOMING EVENTS

O’NEILL FOREBAY OUTING December 8-10th (Rescheduled $om November), Santa Ne"a area

Leader: Mark Shelton (459-7863; [email protected])

What: Fishing for mostly schoolie, some larger striped bass, with the occasional largemouth or smallmouth bass thrown in. The O’ Neill lake record striper is 59 lbs., so you never know! How: Float tubes, pontoon boats, kayaks, wading, power boats all work. Stripping streamers like clousers, Lee Haskin’s San Luis smelt, zonkers, deceivers, and flashtail whistlers on I-lines or sink-tip/full-sink lines works best. Topwater action can occasionally be good in low light (poppers, gurglers, etc.). Rod/line size 6-8 is best, but lighter and heavier gear works. Stripers aren't leader shy, so 5 or so feet of 12lb. mono leader is good. I use fluoro, but doubt it matters. The forebay ranger station opens at sunrise, usually about 6:30 a.m. in fall. Wind can be bad, so I’ll watch the wind info line and keep in touch with interested folks. There are flats on the west and south end of O'Neill that are easily waded and can hold quite a few stripers. The big lake is good for power boats and is an option. Where: Just west of I-5 by Santa Nella, 3 hours north of SLO. Lodging: Some folks like to camp at the lake (Medeiros area is popular); most stay in Motel 6 very near the forebay (I've found it surprisingly clean in previous stays). Motel 6 Santa Nella/Los Banos: 28821 Gonzaga Rd., 3 miles west of I-5. Ph. (209) 827-8700.

DECEMBER 2019

When: When: Plan to head up Sunday & or Monday. Fish that afternoon and Tuesday, returning home that eve.  Monday Dinner: Our usual place (Woolgrower’s) is closed Monday nights, so let’s meet at a new restaurant in Santa Nella, The Kitchen, 6:00 p.m. It is inside the Mission Hotel, right off I-5, the place with the large tower. 13070 S. Hwy 33; phone: (209) 826-4444. It’s supposed to be the new hotspot in Santa Nella.

SAN JUAN RIVER NEW MEXICO OUTING April 12th through 17th, 2020

Announcing the 2020 return to the San Juan for our 6th annual outing!

After checking out other times of the year it seems like our April outing works out the best so the dates are set, arrive Sunday 4/12 and depart Friday 4/17. Options at that time of year include drifting the section from the Texas Hole down to the Quality Water Boundary (mainly rainbows), drifting the section below the Soaring Eagle Lodge (mainly browns), fishing Navajo Lake for bass and pike (a neat change of pace) and if the flows permit wade fishing the Catch & Release area below the dam (my personal favorite).

Our standard trip includes 5 days room and board with 4 days of guided fishing. The cost is about $1,900. You can fly to Durango CO from SLO or SB for about $500 and then it's about an hour's drive to the Lodge.  Another option if you want to camp is the Archuleta campground near the lodge; then you can arrange to have some or all your meals at the lodge and fish with our guides. You can also make changes to your schedule just note that changes need to be made by 2 so we don't mess up the room or guide scheduling.

Registration and deposit will be due in January. I'm starting an early interest sign up list as the lodge and guides want to know about how many to expect as they save the river front cabins for us and we get first shot at the top guides. Let me know and I'll add you to the list and keep you updated.
