(1 SLFF NEWSLETTER – May 2015 PRESIDENT’S LETTER – May 2015 Lew Leichter John Gierach: “I thought about keeping a journal, but when it came right down to it I didn't. For one thing I don't want to be bothered scribbling when I could be fishing. For another I knew I'd be happier relying on my recollections because the memory of a fisherman is more like fiction than journalism, that is, it doesn't ignore the facts but it's not entirely bound by them either.” This will be a short one as we're off to the Juan and the Lugo's are going on vacation. BANQUET FEEDBACK: Our annual fundraiser was a big success. Things we learned included having lunch served with menu choices, instead of the buffet, and having a great speaker really helped attendance. Having said that it's not too early to start lining up a speaker for 2016. If you have a recommendation please let us know. APRIL MEETING: Chris Lim, the new Executive Director, and some of the staff from Central Coast Salmon Enhancement will visit and share with us what's happening with them. For those of us that remember them from the salmon pen rearing days in Avila you won't recognize the new CCSE. Their Mission Statement "Through education & engagement we insure that our natural resources continue to support the ecological, recreational, and economic needs of our community." says it all. Take a moment and visit their website at www.centralcoastsalmon.com. Doug Daniels and I are proud to serve on the CCSE Board of Directors. My name is Harmon Rider and I would like to thank all of the guys who set up and conducted the annual fly casting clinics. I would especially like to thank Eric Sherar and Bernard Pieters for taking the time and having the patience to instruct someone has who has never had a lesson and has developed bad habits over the years. By taking the lessons, (I went to all three classes) I realized if I continue to cast as instructed I will be able to fly fish without injuring my shoulder. With practice I will be able to enjoy and cast where I want the fly to go. Thanks again to the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers. I look forward to the clinics next year. Club Outing to Kern River Outing to the Democrat Day Use area on the lower Kern River

May 15th & 16th

Join us for some great bass and other still water fishing (trout have been caught in here also). Directions: 12 miles from the entrance to the canyon turn left at the Democrat sign and drive down the hill; there is parking and a launch ramp. Plans are to fish Friday PM - overnight in Bakersfield and then fish Saturday AM and head home Saturday PM. I like to stay in the LaQuinta North in Bakersfield. http://www.laquintabakersfieldnorth.com/ You can also find camping and other motels around Lake Isabella. You can also stay up there and fish the Kern on Sunday. This is a fairly large impoundment. As there is not much bank access it is best fished from a pontoon or kick boat. Conventional bass gear & flies will work well. (Guy Jeans uses a Ziwi here, which is his go to fly.) Questions or if you're going and want to car pool contact me and I'll coordinate. Lew

If you're interested I need your check made out to Kaweah Fly Fishers ($100/day includes fishing, camping & they feed us). They need money and a headcount by May 10th. For more info go to www.kelseybassranch.net

Club Outing to Manzanita Lake by Bernard Pieters

JUNE 16th - 20th This outing has become a tradition in our club, and some of the info is well know to many of us. This majestic place with its alpine natural beauty, and quality fishing is bringing us fishermen and women back year after year. In spite of the overall good fishing, the lake can also be challenging. Most of us will agree, "There is a definite learning curve to fishing this lake successfully". Keep in mind, the trout in this lake are "catch and release", wild and highly educated (at times). Many of us have encountered situations when we individually tried to figure out what was going on with this trout, was it the weather or simple trial and error? When you do figure it out, it can PAY OFF BIG TIME! In general the fishing is slow between 4 and 7:30, this will give you ample time to have dinner, and be ready for the evening fishing. If the fishing gods were not on your side during the day, you have still a good shot at great fishing in the evening. The lake comes back to life when the sun is off the water, around 7:30pm. The dry fly activity starts at that time and stays until dark, during this low light period (8:45 to 9:30) the fish are much less picky and easier to fool. What was (for some) impossible to achieve during the day is now working out great. This can result in multiple hook ups (landing is something else). At the same time (8 to 9:30) stripping a dark m. size Seal or W-Bugger on a float line at 2 - 4 ft. depth can be very productive, browns love this, and react to it with explosive strikes. This is a great way to end content with your fishing day. There is a daily fishing briefing (report) planned around 5 pm in site #C-1. A get together can be arranged for one of the early evenings. Lake Almanor is reasonably close by; it would be a great idea to combine Manzanita with the Almanor outing on June 21th – 27th. DETAILS WHERE: Manzanita Lake - Lassen Nat’l Park (North entrance. Take highway 44 east out of Redding) WHEN: From Tuesday June 16th to Saturday June 20th ACCOMMODATIONS: Camping near the lake (no hook ups).
