Prayers for the Sick

From the Desk of | Fr. Robert Altier

The life of the Church, like our daily lives in the world, is regulated by a calendar. Our secular calendar has changed several times. It used to be what was called a Julian calendar; now we follow a Gregorian calendar. Before instituting Leap Year, the calendar lost a day every few years until, in the 1600’s they had to add fifteen days back into the calendar. This event occurred on the day St. Teresa of Avila died. She died the day after September 30, but that year fifteen days were added, so she died on October 15, the day we celebrate her feast. It also used to be normal that the new year coincided with the planting in the Spring. Our own calendar still maintains the vestiges of this way of ordering time: September, October, November, and December literally mean the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth month, but now they represent the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth months. As society became less agrarian it was decided to change the beginning of the new year from planting to January 1. The Church year is also marked by seasons. We have Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. About forty years ago there was a change in the calendar when the time after Epiphany and the time after Pentecost (as the seasons were known) became Ordinary Time. There was also a three week “season” preceding Lent that was known as Septuagesima. The Latin term for Lent is Quadragesima, that is forty days; the three Sundays prior to Lent were known as Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima (seventy, sixty, and fifty days). Even with all of the changes in the Church’s calendar, the new Year has remained the same. The First Sunday of Advent is always the beginning of the new year in the Church. The word Advent means “to come.” So, Advent is a time when we look back to what took place in preparation for the coming of the Messiah and we also look ahead to the second coming of the Messiah. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, the first coming of the Lord, we can learn from what happened 2000 years ago in order to be prepared spiritually for His return in glory. God does not change, so the pattern that showed itself when our Lord came into this world will be the same basic pattern that will take place when He comes the second time. In the Church each of the seasons is marked by a different color. During Advent and Lent we wear purple; during Christmas and Easter we wear white; during Ordinary Time we wear green. For our purposes of considering Advent, we need to understand that purple is the color that signifies penance. So, Advent and Lent are penitential seasons. The motive for the penance is different: Advent is a time of preparation while Lent is a time of reparation. While the purpose is different, we need to recognize that these next few weeks are a time of penance. Our society has completely lost this perspective. On one hand it could be argued that society has maintained some of the preparatory nature of Advent because people are busy scurrying around preparing for Christmas. But the preparation the Church seeks is not so much about material preparations, it is about being spiritually prepared to celebrate the birth of the Messiah. In our society Advent is now a time of “Christmas parties,” lights, trees, decorations, Christmas music, etc. You will notice that in the Church none of this occurs until Christmas. The Church maintains Christmas as its own season lasting several weeks. During the festive time of the Christmas celebration we should be rejoicing with lights, decorations, parties, and other things that express the joyful nature of the season. During Advent, however, we should not be partying, putting up the tree or competing with the neighbors to see who can have the most lights. It may be that you need to get the lights up before Christmas arrives, but keep them unplugged until Christmas. This Advent, make an honest effort to unite with our Lady and St. Joseph as they prepared their hearts for the birth of the

Messiah. Prepare in your hearts, as St. John the Baptist calls us to do, a place for the Lord. God took approximately 2000

years to prepare humanity for the coming of His Son. The Church asks that we would spend these next few weeks preparing

for the coming of the Son of God. Try to make this a time of quiet prayer and preparation. Wait for Christmas to celebrate

Christmas. If you have young children the anticipation will build and Christmas will be a wonderful day, and a wonderful

season, for them. But if we celebrate Christmas prematurely, then when the 25th arrives, Christmas will be over for us; we

will have missed the time of preparation and we will also miss the joy of Christmas. This year, keep Advent as a holy season

of spiritual preparation and you will be amazed at how much more Christmas will mean to you.

~ Fr. Altier

Advent Retreat Starts This Weekend! Every year, for a few weeks before Christmas, the Church enters into the Liturgical Season of Advent. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word advenire, which means “to arrive at.” We prepare our hearts and minds for the arrival of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. God loves us so much that He took on our human nature from the Blessed Virgin Mary and was born a helpless little baby, so that He could live and die among us, rise again, and remain with us forever in various disguises. During Advent, we are encouraged to open ourselves more fully to these beautiful mysteries and their meaning for our everyday lives. One Advent tradition that can help us enter more deeply into the blessings of the Season is to have an Advent Retreat. Fr. Jim Livingston will be leading an Advent Retreat here at St. Raphael's the evenings of Sunday, Dec. 3rd, Monday, Dec. 4th and Tuesday, Dec. 5th, beginning at 7:00 pm. Here is the schedule for each night: 7:00 pm – Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm – Worship in Song. 7:30 pm to approximately 8:15 pm – Talk by Fr. Livingston. 8:15 pm – Prayer by Fr. Livingston, Benediction and Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The topics of Fr. Livingston's talks will be: Sunday – Finding God in Silence. Monday – Finding God in the Personal Covenant with the Lord. Tuesday – Finding God in the Eucharist. I encourage you to come to this Retreat if at all possible! Fr. Livingston is known around the area as a prayerful and holy priest, and a great speaker. I plan to be there myself each evening. In Christ, Fr. Rudolph

Saint of the Day – Saint Fare Fare—also known as Burgundofara—was the daughter of Agneric, a wealthy nobleman in the Merovingian Kingdom, in the area of what is now France. She was born around the latter part of the Sixth Century. Soon after her birth she was blessed and dedicated to God by Saint Columbanus. Fare was intent on entering the religious life, like her brothers, but her father wanted her to enter into a marriage that was to his political advantage. During their battle of wills, Fare became seriously ill. The Abbot of the Monastery of Luxeuil eventually convinced Agneric that his daughter’s illness was caused by his insistence on her getting married, and he relented. Fare’s father changed his mind at least once, but finally respected her wishes. He even built a monastery that she could live in. It was a double monastery—one for monks and one for nuns, which was common at the time—and Fare eventually became its abbess. She served in that role for thirty-seven years. She also founded other monas-teries. Many girls of the nobility were sent there for their education and, if they so desired, to be betrothed to their heavenly Bridegroom. Among them were a number of Eng-lish girls, including Saints Sethrida and Ethelburga. Saint Fare left this life to be with the Lord in the year 657. Saint Fare, pray for us! As today’s Gospel tells us, we may not know when He is coming, but He promises He will come. Jesus wants to celebrate with you. He’s given us four weeks to get ready! Step by step and day by day, you can draw closer to our Lord, and feel Him draw closer to you! What better place (besides Mass) than in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.

Can you accept Jesus’ invitation?

If you feel called to make a commitment to a weekly hour or to sign up on the substitute list for the Christmas sea-son or in the new year, please contact Betty or Therese at the numbers above. They are also able to answer any questions about Adoration. (If signing up for the Christ-mas Holy Days only, you need not call them, just sign up on the sheet on the sign-in counter.) Please, come and visit whenever you are able 24/7.

The Sunday hour from 4:00-5:00 a.m. still urgently needs to be filled by one or two adorers. The Wednesday hour from 4:00-5:00 a.m. needs a prayer partner. There are many hours that need prayer partners or long term subs over the winter months, for those who are traveling or unable to get around as well in the winter weather. Some of these hours are Mondays noon to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Advent Penance Service: The Church of St. Raphael will have an Advent Parish Penance Day on Sunday, December 17th at 3:00 pm. Collection to Help Retired Religious Next Sunday we will be having a second collection for Retired Religious. Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests need your help. Many served for years in Catholic schools, hospitals and parishes—often for little to no pay. Now there is a shortage in retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides funding for medications, nursing care, and more. Please prayerfully consider giving to those who have given a lifetime

Mass of Solidarity: Share the Journey Saturday, December 9, 5 p.m., Basilica of Saint Mary, Minneapolis. Archbishop Hebda and Bishop Cozzens invite all Catholics to join our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters from around the world. This Mass is part of the 2-year “Share the Journey” campaign, launched by Pope Francis on September 27, 2017, to support those who have left, or have been displaced from, their home countries. WANTED A FEW MORE VOLUNTEERS!

If you like to read or love to wander the stacks of books in book shops and libraries, do I have a chance for you to indulge yourself.

We are looking for a few volunteers to help staff the St Raphael Church Library. It is a very simple commitment of half an hour before and after the weekend Masses. You will open the library before Mass to help any Parishioner that may stop by to return items or check out new items. You can then close to go to Mass and return after Mass. No computer skills are needed, the library program is very simple.

We are especially looking for someone to regularly staff the library before and after the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturday. So if you tend to always come to the 5:30 pm Saturday night Mass, this is an easy opportunity to share your time and talent without much additional effort.

We could also us additional volunteers to pick up shifts on Sundays. You choose the day and Mass you want to volunteer at by entering your name on our calendar in the Library.

Spaced-out in the Chapel

Last year more people came to weekday Masses in the Holy Spirit Chapel during Advent and Lent than during other times of the year. So to make sure no one has to leave for lack of room, Masses on Monday through Friday mornings during those liturgical seasons will be in the main worship space of the church instead of in the Holy Spirit Chapel. This will begin on Monday, Dec. 4th and continue through Friday, Dec. 22nd. During this time the books containing the Readings for Mass will be on the tables as you enter the church.

Imagine waking up Christmas morning with no presents under the tree….or the smell of a special meal in the oven. Imagine watching all the other children enjoying their new clothes and toys while you have

nothing….not even the bare necessities like a new pair of mittens, a hat, or boots to help keep you warm and dry.

Every time a hand reaches out to help another...it’s Christmas. Would you please help me get a head start on the Adopt-A-Family Christmas list?

Adopt-A-Family is a program that helps families who face temporary financial set backs due to medical bills, job loss (down sizing), the economy, repairs to their car, etc. and have the impossible task in trying to provide a Christmas with all the trimmings for their children. Helping such families would include gifts or help in providing a Christmas dinner through donations or gift cards. If you would like to adopt a family or know of anyone in need, please contact Bunny at 763-537-8401 x214. I will be glad to offer a further explanation of our program. ~ Bunny Arseneau

Principal’s News.. Our thanks go out for the recent violin and guitar donations in support of our Band and Orchestra expansion initiative--thank you so very much! We recently completed a student survey for grades 4 - 8 and asked the students if they were interested in learning to play an instrument and which instruments they were interested in playing (this does not include students already taking music lessons). A total of 44 students said they were interested in playing an instrument! Here are the student's instrument selections: Violin (15), Cello (4), Trumpet (2), Clarinet (4), Oboe (3), Viola (2), Bass (1), Trombone (1), Flute (8), Saxophone (2), Cymbals (3), Guitar (2), Piano (9), and Drums (1). Some students chose more than one instrument which is great. If you or someone you know is willing to donate one of the above instruments (in working condition) to the school, please let us know. We are accepting all instrument sizes. May God bless you in your support of our Band and Orchestra programs! In His Service, Doug Ballinger, Principal

St. Raphael Student Council members, who set an initial goal of collecting 1,000 items of food, kicked off the drive 15 days ago. The Council members and the staff at St. Raphael have been overwhelmed by the response. “The students of St. Raphael School are honored to be able to share this food with those in need,” said Principal Doug Ballinger. “I am very proud of our students, who have displayed great generosity. This kind of outreach and service to our community fits the mission of St. Raphael Catholic School, and impacts not only the recipients, but our students as well.” The items collected will be distributed via Olson Middle School in Minneapolis, and NEAR food shelf in Crystal. St. Raphael School has held a food drive for more than 20 years. The previous rec-ord for items collected was 650. St. Raphael Catholic School was established in 1952, and currently serves 160 students in preschool through eighth grade. The mission of the school is to nurture the development of each child through faithful Catholic Education that stresses the love of Jesus Christ.
