Members and GM Run Riders
The V&V Group of the Club ran a very successful and enjoyable 2017 Geoff Martin Run on Sunday 22nd October
with 70 riders and pillions participating. After a tasty breakfast cooked by club members Peter and Emmett Bowman,
riders headed off on either an 82km short run or a 180km long run for a club cooked lunch behind the Royal Hotel at
Carcoar. Catering for lunch was thanks to the efforts of Matt Holden and Greg Bayliss. Special thanks also to Phil
Bryant, Leonie Tristram, Bruce Morgan, Rob Smith, Greg Donald, Margaret Struthers and Peter Williamson for their
assistance in organising and assisting with the Run.
The Run raised $2700 for donation to the ICU at Bathurst Base Hospital and this is in no small part due to the
publicity for the event coordinated by Ted Reedy and provided by the Western Advocate and Radio 2BS together with
support for the raffle from Mick Muldoon Motorcycles and Taylors Motorcycle Services.
You can view photos of the event on Google Photos https://photos.app.goo.gl/aTfFqzVSSz4CDcwp1
I anticipate that next year's run will be on Sunday 21st October so reserve the date.

TECHNICAL TIPS
Further to recent discussions on brake and clutch failures and bike concerns on Rally’s and Rides, it is timely,
particularly at this time of the year to do yourself a favour.
That is to change your hydraulic fluids. You should flush and replace your brake and clutch system at least every two
years. You can change your own. If you have a fluid leak or you have to bleed your brakes, you’ll have to restore the
brake fluid in your master cylinder to its proper level.
Always use top-quality brake fluid from a well-known manufacturer. Many vehicles call for either D.O.T. 3 or D.O.T.
4. D.O.T. 5 is now available. It’s a great improvement because it doesn’t eat paint or absorb moisture. The downside is
that because D.O.T. 5 doesn’t absorb it, water that gets into your brake system can form little pools that can corrode
your brakes.
Exposure to air swiftly contaminates brake fluid. The oxygen in the air oxidizes it and lowers its boiling point. Brake
fluid also has an affinity for moisture, and the water vapour in the air can combine with the brake fluid, lowering its
boiling point and in cold weather, forming ice crystals that make braking difficult. Adding fluid contaminated with
water vapour to your brake system can rust the system and create acids that etch your wheel cylinders, calipers and
master cylinder and foul your brakes, causing them to work poorly- or not at all.
If you are going to add brake fluid to your system, buy a small quantity (500 Ml.) of the correct type, add the fluid to
you master cylinder, and either throw the rest away or use it only in emergencies. The stuff is pretty cheap, and your
bike shouldn’t need more fluid after you fix a leak. If you keep a container with only a little fluid left in it, the air that
fills up the rest of the space in the can contaminates the fluid no matter how quickly you recap it.

Bad Advice
An Engine-shaft oil seal which is badly worn will allow oil to pass from the crankcase, causing the oil level therein to
rise alarmingly.
Long-term remedy is to fit a new oil seal, but this could prove expensive.
A cheaper and simpler solution is to drill an interconnecting hole between the chain case and crankcase, at correct oil-
level height. Excess oil will then drain back to its rightful place.

Bad Advice from 1964
Dim View. Dull lighting may have several contributory causes. For instance, electricity could be taking so long to reach
the bulbs that it is exhausted on arrival. Cure here is to shorten the cables by about three feet.
Through infrequent use, the current stored in the battery may have become stale and dirty.
To freshen it, try topping-up the battery with a strong solution of detergent.
Finally, the rectifier may be poorly earthed. Remove the rectifier, dig over the earth thoroughly and add a spadeful of
well-rotted compost before replanting.

The 348cc OHV Douglas Twin
The mention of the word Douglas is sufficient to bring back nostalgic memories to many thousands of Australians
who owned and rode them between the two wars. In fact many of the Don R’s were equipped with them during World
War 1. When Dirt Track racing was booming in the late twenties most of the leading riders were on Douggies. One
such model is still racing at the Sydney Sports Ground. The basic principles of the design remain almost unaltered, the
horizontally opposed engine and the fly-wheel clutch are still retained.
The engine is mounted transversely in the frame and the gearbox and clutch housing are integrally cast with the
crankcase giving the whole power unit a compact and tidy appearance. Although the gearbox and crankshaft are in
line and orthodox kick starter is employed. The two carburettors are easily accessible at the rear of each cylinder head
and in place of the normal handlebar air control they have short spring loaded plungers.
When the machine was wheeled out of the show-room it was the centre of attraction. Since the weather was hot there
was no need to use the air controls. A slight flooding of the carburettor and a gentle down-ward push on the kick
starter was all that was necessary to start the motor ticking over evenly. With the engine idling and the machine action
of the fly-wheel caused it to vibrate from side to side. This was not very pronounced and disappeared entirely as soon
as the machine was under way. First gear was engaged without any grating and the clutch action was smooth. As soon
as the machine moved forward it appeared to be grasped by a pair of invisible hands and held firmly on the road. This
was no doubt the result of the placing of the cylinders and the disposition of the weight causing the centre of gravity to
be much lower than the average. This very fact made it an ideal machine for negotiating heavy traffic. While waiting
for the policeman’s signal it was possible to crawl along at less than walking pace without any conscious effort or any
need to foot. The slow moving traffic called for some manipulation of the manual spark control lever if the silky
behaviour of the engine was to be maintained without pinking.
The riding position was all that could be desired. The footrests being slightly behind the saddle nose and the wide
straight handlebars provided a poised position which proved to be very comfortable. For the rider who is above or
below average height the footrests are readily adjustable by means of saw toothed serrations and the handle bar height
may be altered to suit individual taste. The cable operated rear brake pedal is ideally situated right beneath the ball of
the left foot. Both the front and rear stoppers are of the T.T. variety bringing the model to a stop in the exceptionally
short distance of 26 feet 6 inches from 30 m.p.h. on dry concrete. The front brake had a tendency to chatter slightly.
This was no doubt due to the design of the bottom link forks which allow the brake anchor plate slightly less than the
total wheel movement.
Once clear of the city limits I determined to search for a strip of road which would provide a severe test for the
Douglas springing. I came across as nasty a piece as could be wished for; it was a length of concrete which had all the
appearances of having been bombed, so deep were the pot holes. At slow speeds the only sensation noticed when
traversing this section was extreme comfort. I imagine the character who rode on the magic carpet felt the same way.
Speeds in excess of thirty gave much the same reaction as the spring of the modern light car when driven on a
corrugated road. There was no lessening in the degree of comfort but I could feel the wheels and springing working
beneath me.
I determined to test the lateral rigidity of the frame on corners. I received a pleasant surprise when I took a bumpy
bend at fifty. The machine seemed to lazily keel over until it reached the right angle and when the bend was negotiated
without any tendency for the frame to whip it came up of its own accord. The steering was delightfully light at al
speeds and due to the low unsprung weight of the front forks there was no need for a steering damper. I formed the
impression that no matter what the road surface, whether wet of dry, the Douglas could be taken round any curve by
the average rider without wavering from the chosen line.
The machine under review was almost new and as a consequence had to be nursed. But in the few brief bursts I gave it
I found that it accelerated very rapidly and the gear changing was achieved without any fuss, each gear being selected
very positively by the foot change mechanism. Each gear speared to have a neutral between it and the one following.
If the change was made with a gentle follow through motion of the foot there was no chance of engaging neutral in
error. When the motor was pulling hard on hills there was a total absence of vibration in its stead there was an even
power impulse. The third gear ratio, which is very close to top, proved to be advantageous for rapid acceleration under
the above conditions. The almost square motor (60.8 x 60 mm) thoroughly enjoyed high revs.
The positioning of the Magdyno is ideal. It is mounted high on top of the crankcases out of harm’s way making it
virtually impossible for moisture to enter. In this position it is a little difficult to adjust the magneto points. The
generator cuts in at commendably low speeds and the 7 in. headlight throws a powerful beam for fast night travel.
The lubrication of the motor is rather unusual in that it closely follows tried and tested car principles. A wet sump is
used together with a van type oil pump which ensures that an adequate supply of oil is kept in circulation. Both the
sump and the gearbox are provided with easily accessible oil dip sticks.
Throughout the test at all engine speeds the degree of exhaust silence was commendable. The designers have forsaken
the orthodox silencers in preference for a very neatly cast aluminium expansion chamber which fits snugly beneath the
centre of the frame out of harm’s way with slit gas outlets at an angle of 45 degrees to the rear. Another excellent
feature is the provision of a centre lift stand. This stand has large semicircular shoes fitted to its extremities which
allow the machine to be rolled back onto it with an absolute minimum of effort.
The petrol consumption worked out at slightly better than 80 m.p.g. I did not attempt to obtain the machine’s
maximum performance for the very good reason as pointed out above. The makers claim it to be capable of
approximately 75 m.p.h., I see no reason to doubt them. At the conclusion of the test there was not the slightest sign of
any oil leaks. The only fault I could find with the machine was a very stiff twist grip control. This upon investigation
was proved to be caused by particles of rust in the Bowden casing. When a little oil was applied the control was free
and easy.
The petrol tank is chrome and black with the well-known blue Douglas panels. The machine is finished in lustrous
black enamel and the metal parts are chrome plated.
To sum up the Douglas is a machine for the rider who demands a mount of outstanding comfort coupled with
extraordinary road holding capabilities, easy starting and a motor that revels in sustained high cruising speeds.

Stiction
When the clutch plates slip under load, considerable heat is generated, but there is a way of using this heat to cure the
original trouble.
Crack two fresh eggs on the outer periphery of the clutch drum, permitting the yokes to penetrate between the friction
surfaces of the plates.
If this is done quickly, the hot plates will immediately fry the eggs.
The effectiveness of this tip will be immediately apparent to anyone who is given the task of washing-up breakfast
crockery: chine plates, smeared with fried eff, have a coefficient of friction estimated at 35 per cent greater than that
of bonded cork.
