Deconstruction of The Only Expcetion- Paramore

Deconstruction of The Only Exception- Paramore

Alice Roberts

Style?

-According to Goodwins theory this music video is a Hybrid. This is a combination of two or more music video styles.

-Performance of the music video is used by the band members performing the track whilst the lead singer Hayley lip sings.

-Narrative is also used where the video tells the story of the protagonist not believing that love exists and trying to live without it, mainly to avoid rejection, but eventually realizing that it does exist, describing the person as being their "only exception"

Beginning

-She then continues on into the next room which is a bedroom where she then starts lip syncing and staring into a mirror. The notion of looking is another point stated in Goodwins theory.

-The beginning of the video opens with Hayley (the lead singer) waking up on a couch next to an unnamed male and writing a note that says I'm sorry from my genre research I know that the alternative rock genre consists of lyrics being emotional hence the love note left for the male featured on the couch.

-She goes into the next room (from the lyrics) the audience is aware that this man is her father. Here the lyrics match the visuals and the story which is being told. This is a feature noted from Goodwins theory of the relationship between lyrics and visuals.

Chorus

-The chorus begins with an Ariel shot of the lead singer against a giant pile of valentine themed cards which link between the lyrics and visuals on screen, this again is a feature noted by Goodwins theory as she is singing about love.

-The valentine themed cards are in fact fan-made which would probably be a demand from the record company to add a personal touch. This would add to popularity of the band and video.

-A close up of Hayleys face would again be a demand from the record company to increase popularity and also develop the brand.

-This is the performance part of the music video style, it shows the whole band performing the instruments. The main focus is still on the lead singer with her being composited in the centre of the shot in the light whilst the others are in the background in the dim-light.

-Next Hayley moves through a costume closet. The fact that Hayley is moving through a large wardrobe could relate to the film Narnia: Lion Witch and The Wardrobe which could be an inter-textual reference which would increase popularity to a music video/band. This is again one of the six points Goodwin had discovered in his theory.

She then moves into the next room, where there's a wedding everyone is wearing white, but Hayley comes dressed in black; this could show her being disrespectful as Black is normally related to death.

End

-At a rock concert Hayley (through the notion of looking a point of view shot) discovers the same male she woke up to at the beginning.

End

-After daydreaming of the two being together, she then makes her way back through the various rooms to the original set in the beginning of the video.

-Hayley sings And I'm, on my way to believing and returns to the couch where the male is still asleep, and hides the note she wrote in her pocket as she lies back down next to him. This shows her giving him a chance after everything that had happened. This is the emotional lyrics which are a generic feature of the alternative genre relating the narrative/visuals on screen.
