Welcome to the Naval Air Weapons StationChina Lake, high desert home of the Naval Air Sys-tems Command (NAVAIR) Weapons Division,where the Navy and Marine Corps have developedor tested nearly every significant airborne weaponsystem in the past five decades. China Lake is locat-ed about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles on thewestern edge of California’s Mojave Desert. If youare arriving by air, flights are available from LosAngeles International Airport to the Inyokern Air-port, about 10 miles from the main gate. Whilerental cars are available, there is no public trans-portation between the airport and China Lake.

Within a day’s travel are both thehighest (Mt. Whitney) and lowestpoints (Badwater in Death Valley) inthe contiguous 48 states. The IndianWells Valley, home to China Lake, isbordered by the Sierra Nevada, Cosoand Argus Mountain ranges.

Weather in the valley and at ChinaLake is predominantly clear and dry.The visibility for flying and conductingtest events is nearly unlimited. Sum-mer temperatures often rise to morethan 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with theseason maximum of around 110degrees. In the winter, night and morn-ing temperatures may fall below freez-ing, but the normally clear days bringmidday highs to the sunny mid 60s.

If you arrive by car, any route toChina Lake from east of the RockyMountains involves some mountaindriving and crossing parts of the desert.Some parts of the trip may take you 50to 100 miles from the nearest town.

HISTORYIn the midst of World War II, ade-

quate facilities were needed for test andevaluation (T&E) of rockets beingdeveloped for the Navy by the Califor-nia Institute of Technology (Cal Tech).At the same time, the Navy needed anew proving ground for all aviation ord-nance. CalTech’s Dr. Charles C. Laurit-sen and then Cdr. Sherman E. Bur-roughs met and formed a pact to find asite meeting both their needs.

In the summer of 1943, whilesearching for the direly needed site,Dr. Lauritsen, in a small plane flownby Cdr. Jack Renard spotted a two-waylanding strip near Inyokern. It was inthe middle of nowhere, with nothingbut empty desert for miles around,but not too far removed from Cal-Tech’s Pasadena base.

The Naval Ordnance Test Station(NOTS) was established on November8, 1943 and its mission defined in a let-ter by the Secretary of the Navy, "...a sta-tion having for its primary function theresearch, development and testing ofweapons, and having additional func-tion of furnishing primary training inthe use of such weapons."

Testing began at China Lake within a month of the Station’s formalestablishment. The vast sparsely

populated desert around China Lakeand Inyokern, with near perfect flyingweather and practically unlimited vis-ibility, proved an ideal location notonly for T&E activities, but also for acomplete research and development

(R&D) establishment. The early Navy-CalTech partnership established apattern of cooperation and interac-tion between civilian scientists andengineers and experienced militarypersonnel that, in the ensuing fivedecades, has made China Lake one of

the preeminent RDT&E institutions inthe world.

In the years following WW II,China Lake projects included devel-opment of the famed Sidewinder air-to-air missile, the Shrike anti-radia-tion missile, the Zuni rocket, a seriesof aircraft rockets, an entire family offreefall weapons, torpedoes and theTV-guided Walleye glide bomb. Addi-tionally, the Polaris missile conceptswere developed by NOTS weapons-planning teams, and the first subma-rine-launched ballistic missile motorswere tested by China Lake.

In July 1967, NOTS China Lake andthe Naval Ordnance Laboratory, Coro-na, Calif., became the Naval WeaponsCenter. The Corona facilities wereclosed and their functions transferredto China Lake in 1971. In July, 1979, themission and functions of the NationalParachute Test Range in El Centro weretransferred to China Lake.

In January 1992, the NavalWeapons Center China Lake and thePacific Missile Test Center Point Muguwere disestablished and joined with

naval units at Albuquerque and WhiteSands, N.M., as a single command: theNaval Air Warfare Center WeaponsDivision (NAWCWD). The physicalplants at China Lake and Point Muguwere designated as naval air weaponsstations (NAWSs) and hosts of theWeapons Division, performing thebase-keeping functions.

In October 1998, NAWS PointMugu, following a claimancy change tothe U.S. Pacific Fleet, became Naval AirStation Point Mugu, and is no longer apart of the parent Weapons Divisionorganization. More than 2,000 WeaponsDivision employees, however, continueto perform their same functions as ten-ants at Point Mugu.

In the fall of 2001, the WeaponsDivision dropped “Naval Air WarfareCenter” from its name to become the“Naval Air Systems Command WeaponsDivision,” or more simply, the “NAVAIRWeapons Division.”

On October 1, 2001, the WhiteSands Detachment was transferred tothe Naval Sea Systems Command, leav-ing China Lake and Point Mugu theonly WD sites.

From the site’s founding as NavalOrdnance Test Station (NOTS) ChinaLake in 1943 until the mid 1950s, theNavy was practically the only providerof services in the surrounding IndianWells Valley. Housing, schools, medicalservices, shopping and recreation wereall provided for China Lake’s civiliansas well as for the military. Temporaryhousing, dirt roads, occasional floodsand “termination winds” tested themettle of early residents; but new hous-ing, trees and lawns, extensive recre-ational facilities, community affairs,clubs and social events, and a growingspirit of community rapidly improvedthe quality of life in the valley.

Ridgecrest, the outside-the-gatecommunity – little more than a cross-roads and general store in 1943 – beganto grow in the 1950s as residents thereand on the base began to demandgoods and services beyond what theNavy had to offer. During the 1950s, afew more adventuresome employeesbought houses “in town;” some moreconservative residents perhaps boughta bit of land. Through the 1950s andinto the 1960s, Ridgecrest grew slowly,about three percent per year in popula-tion. The incorporation of the City of

THE CHINA LAKECOMMUNITY

The China Lake community, atfirst hidden under the mailing addressof “NOTS-Inyokern,” was planned from the start as a community where both military and civilians would live side by side. The integrated military-civilian laboratory-oriented communi-ty paid off handsomely. In the forma-tive years, ideas conceived at workwere often moved toward fruition in back fence discussions with next door neighbors or at a Saturday party or softball game. The traditions of military-civilian interaction and work-related socializing continue to thisday, despite the markedly changedcharacter of the China Lake andRidgecrest communities.

Ridgecrest in 1963 was a positive stepin demonstrating its permanence, butRidgecrest continued to grow slowly.Meanwhile, on the base, apartments,new housing, recreation facilities and anew All Faith Chapel were built, andtwo new schools were finished. ChinaLake continued to be a thriving, self-contained military-civilian community.

The late 1960s were a transitionperiod for China Lake. Ridgecrest wasgrowing rapidly, more quality housingwas becoming available off base andChina Lake housing peaked. (The last ofthe navy-built housing, the Capeharts,was completed in the early 1960s.)Additionally, a letter of permanencewas accepted by the FHA and housingloans became readily available.

The Station’s role in the commu-nity evolved over the last 40 yearsfrom that of primary landlord andprovider of services to that of beingprimarily a good neighbor. The pres-ent NAWS housing area, much smaller

than that of the 1960s, is sufficient to support the Station’s military. Thecommunity area of China Lake wasannexed by the City of Ridgecrest in1982, and today the spirit of commu-nity extends to residents both on andoff the base. Though military and civil-ians are less likely to see each otherover the back fence, they do still meetat the tennis courts and swimmingpools, in a school board meeting or ata session of the City Council.

The pioneering spirit and “can do”attitude that helped early residentsthrough China Lake’s formative yearshave not disappeared. The directionand focus have changed in many ways,but the China Lake community – theCity of Ridgecrest inside and outsidethe gate – remains active, interestedand a vital part of the continued suc-cess of NAVAIR WD.

In this era of Defense Departmentstreamlining and downsizing, the ChinaLake site remains constant in our goal

to be the Navy’s premier full-spectrumlaboratory for research, development,test and evaluation of weapons and air-craft weapons systems.

China Lake continues to be anintegral part of the new concept thatwill improve the ability of the NavalAviation Systems Team to meet theneeds of the Navy and the fleet wellinto the next century.

The Navy remains the Indian WellsValley’s largest employer with morethan 3,000 civilian and approximately1,000 military employees. On any normal workday, 10,000 people passthrough the gates.

Several recent projects aboard theNaval Air Weapons Station China Lakeconstitute a multimillion dollar reno-vation of family and bachelor housing on base. The “Navy Neighborhoods of Excellence” program is a facilityimprovement plan designed towardenhancing the quality of life for thoseliving on Station.

Main Gate

CHECKING INAt China Lake, the main gate is easily access-

ible from State Highway 178, State Highway 14 and Highway 395.

Military personnel should initially check in at theQuarterdeck, which is located in the HeadquartersBuilding at the northeast corner of Knox Road andBlandy Avenue. At the Quarterdeck you will be given further instructions so that you can completethe check-in process. The Quarterdeck is staffed 24 hours a day and can be reached at commercial(619) 939-2303 or DSN 437-2303.

Reporting Aboard

C ivilian personnel should ini-tially check in at the Human Re-sources Department during normalworking hours. The Human ResourcesDepartment is located on BlandyAvenue across from The Wreck Cen-ter. At Human Resources you will begiven further instructions aboutchecking in. If you are a new profes-sional or a cooperative educationstudent, you should also make anappointment with the ProfessionalRecruitment Coordinator before youleave the Human Resources Depart-ment. A Safety and Security Orienta-tion Briefing is scheduled regularlyfor new personnel.

TRAFFIC REGULATIONSVehicle registration papers and a

valid operator’s permit from yourhome state are needed to operate aprivately-owned vehicle both on- andoff-Station. (Drivers from other statesshould also get a valid California dri-ver’s license promptly.)

Traffic regulations are enforced atChina Lake. The speed limit on Stationis 25 miles per hour unless otherwiseposted. DoD decals can be obtainedfrom the Vehicle Registration officelocated at the Visitor Center at the maingate. To receive your decal, you mustbring your vehicle registration, militaryidentification card (if applicable), dri-ver’s license and proof of insurance.

POLICE AND SECURITYSecurity is maintained through the

China Lake Safety and Physical SecurityDepartment. The China Lake PoliceDivision (CLPD) can be contacted 24hours a day at 939-3323.

BADGESAfter you have checked in, you

will be issued a China Lake badge.This badge is very important to youand should be safeguarded with thesame care as your driver’s license orany other important document. Itmust not be left unattended where anunauthorized person could obtain it(in your vehicle, for instance). YourChina Lake badge says, “I belonghere,” and identifies you as an officialChina Lake employee.

The badge must be worn in fullview while in any restricted area.

Any person who works with classi-fied information must have the propersecurity clearance and an establishedneed-to-know for the informationinvolved. If your job at China Lakerequires it, a clearance request will beinitiated.

Area authorization is required onyour badge when going into restrictedareas or buildings on Station.

FIREARMSFor regulations on possession of

firearms aboard Station contact theCLPD.

CAMERASYou may bring cameras, binoculars

and telescopes aboard NAWS ChinaLake without registering them. You mayuse them in the community area of theStation. Only official photographers

with a camera pass, however, may carrycameras and take photos in restrictedareas.

PETSPets are allowed in on-Station

housing, but owners are responsible fortheir care and proper control. All dogsfour months or older must be licensedby Kern County. When living aboardNAWS China Lake, residents are limitedto a maximum of two pets in a singledwelling.

WORK SCHEDULEMost employees at China Lake are

on what is known as a Flex Friday WorkSchedule. During the two-week payperiod, employees work eight hours onnon-payday Fridays and nine hours aday Monday through Thursday of bothweeks. This totals 80 hours and allowspayday Friday to be a day off.

The Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake Fleet and Family SupportCenter (FFSC) is located at 610 Blandy Avenue, Building 2308.

The mission of the FFSC is to enhance the quality of life for the people inthe military community. Proactive, responsive and supportive services are theFFSC’s business.The highly qualified and dedicated team members provide infor-mation, education, counseling, support services, free enrichment programs andworkshops for active duty, retirees, their family members and DoD personnel.

The facility offers one-stop shopping with many support services in a singlelocation. Registration for classes can be viewed and accessed through the FFSCwebsite at www.nawacwpns.navy.mil/~fsc.

In addition to the FFSC staff, these additional services are available at thecenter.

The FFSC services provide “skillsfor living,” information, guidance andreferrals in transition, relocation,spouse assistance, financial matters,information and referral and familycounseling.

FFSC ServicesTransition Assistance Management

Program (TAMP): Assists militarymembers in transitioning smoothlyback into the civilian world by offeringthem tools needed to market them-selves for new careers. The TransitionAssistance Program (TAP) holds work-shops for active duty personnel andtheir spouses.

The Relocation Assistance Program(RAP) assists members make a smoothtransition between duty stations andassists family members in the search fora new job at the new home, as well as:

• Pre/post move relocation and newcomer orientations

• Welcome Aboard packages• Information on schools, recre-

ation, volunteer opportunities• Loan Closet items for use when

transferring in or out. (TVs, VCRs, microwave ovens, futons, hospitality kits and much more)

Spouse Employment AssistanceProgram (SEAP): Assists family mem-bers in career objectives, including:

• Career Counseling • Career interest assessments• Skills training, job referrals• Networking and marketing tools• Assistance in resume writing

Personal Finance Management pro-vides basic consumer education andtraining to enable personnel to realize abetter quality of life through activefinancial management. This includes:

• Seminars on buying cars, rentingor buying homes

• Savings and investments, checking accounts, consumer awareness

• Credit Management repair• Life insurance• Overcoming personal debt

Information and Referral Assistantprovides one-stop help in finding theappropriate local resources, bothmilitary and civilian, with extensive

networking to assist the military familyin all aspects of family development

Family Advocacy Program (FAP)offers social-educational interventionstrategies such as provision of informa-tion and short-term support. The pri-mary function of FAP is prevention; vic-tim safety and protection; offenderaccountability; rehabilitative educationand counseling.

Counseling Services provide short-term (8-12 sessions) intervention incommon adjustment problems expe-rienced by married and single servicepeople and their immediate families.Such problems could include commu-nication and other problems in mar-riage, child-rearing or anger-controlissues.

FFSC Tenant OrganizationsThe Navy-Marine Corps Relief

Society (NMCRS) provides services toactive duty, retired Navy and MarineCorps personnel (including FleetReservists) and their dependents.Whether the emergency is a missingallotment check, a destructive homefire or a death in the family, the NMCRSis there. Trained volunteers can assistwith problems through counseling,budgeting advice for the family or inpreparation for a new addition to thefamily with their budget for baby classor direct financial assistance.

Navy Marine Corps Relief SocietyVisiting Nurse provides services to themilitary family in home and clinic or

hospital visits for the purpose ofproviding continuity between patient,doctors, and military or communityresources.

• Medications and diet orders• Postpartum or newborn care• Post-surgical follow-up care• Child development and parenting

issues

Women’s Outreach Center providesa variety of support services for victimsafety and protection. Services in-clude, but are not limited to, shelter forvictims, education and support groupsfor victims and advocacy services(SART).

Laubach Literacy Council providesvolunteers who will tutor those whoneed English as a second language andmath tutoring.

WIC (Women, Infants and Children)comes to the FFSC twice monthly andserves military and their family mem-bers who fall within certain incomeparameters. This group addressesinfant and nursing-mother needs.

The Navy College representative isavailable to assist active duty military,reservists and their dependents in thecompletion of their educational goals.Tuition assistance, Dantes and CLEPtests are available.

The Consumer Credit Counselingrepresentative is available every Tues-day for assistance in debt consolida-tion, consumer education, and adviceand assistance in lowering monthly

interest rates and monthly paymentamounts.

Other tenants include two colleges:Embry Riddle Aeronautical Universityand University of Tennessee SpaceInstitute.

HOUSINGNavy-owned housing at NAWS

China Lake may be available to activeduty military families. If you are beingassigned to China Lake, you shouldsubmit an Application for Assignmentto Housing form, a copy of your ordersand an Emergency Data InformationSheet to Navy Family Housing, NavalAir Weapons Station, China Lake, CA93555. On the basis of this applica-tion, which requests data on maritalstatus, family size, ages and pay-grade, you will be assigned the appro-priate type of housing. Because of the need to renovate quarters betweenoccupants, applications should bemade at least six weeks before youreport aboard.

Assignment to Government Quar-ters is not mandatory. All military mem-bers may request to reside off Station.

Family UnitsThe majority of homes on Station

are duplexes. There are 19 Senior Offi-cer Quarters units, one flag unit andanother 172 family units in the “A”Capeharts. All units are unfurnishedbut provided with a range, refrigerator,heating and central evaporative cool-ing. All units have three or more bed-rooms and two full bathrooms.

Bachelor Enlisted QuartersSingle enlisted members and mar-

ried personnel not accompanied bytheir families are assigned BachelorEnlisted Quarters (BEQ). There are 182modular rooms in the three-buildingcomplex. at China Lake is located on BlandyAvenue in the Bennington Plaza, directlyacross from the All Faith Chapel. Thestore is a branch store of NEXCEN, SanDiego.

At the main retail store, eligiblepatrons can purchase general merchan-dise, ranging from furniture and appli-ances to clothing and toys. Itemstemporarily out of stock, or not norm-ally carried at this NEX, can be specialordered.

The mini-mart carries consumablegoods, such as food and beverages. It also stocks toiletries, garden andpatio supplies and sporting goods. Thepackage store is in the back of themini-mart.

The Branch Medical Clinic ChinaLake (BMCCL) provides primary andpreventive outpatient medical care in afamily practice type model to all eligi-ble military beneficiaries with prioritygiven to those signed up in TRICAREPrime. BMCCL is staffed with full-timeboard-certified family practitioners, aphysician assistant, an adult nursepractitioner, flight surgeons, registerednurses and an independent duty corps-man. Patients with specialty care thatexceed the clinic’s capabilities arereferred to local civilian providers ormilitary treatment facilities. A completepatient information guide is availablein the clinic’s lobby waiting area. Thisdescribes, in detail, all clinic services,hours and phone numbers.

The clinic is open from 7 a.m. to5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday;7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday; and from7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on working Fridays. Onflex Friday, the clinic is open from 7 to11 a.m. Active duty, TRICARE primeenrollees and other eligible beneficiar-ies are seen by appointment for allclinic services and must have their IDcards with them at the time of theappointment. Appointments are madeby calling 939-8000 with priority for

appointments given to active duty andTRICARE Prime enrollees.

Urgent/acute medical issues areseen at any time during normal clinicworking hours. All emergent medicalproblems should be taken directly tothe Ridgecrest Regional Hospital Emer-gency Room. Sick call is by appoint-ment, no active duty member will bedenied care if no appointment is avail-able. Active duty personnel must be inthe uniform of the day and have theirmilitary ID card with them when report-ing for sick call or other appointments.

Active duty and TRICARE benefici-ary personnel with urgent medicalneeds after normal hours can use theRidgecrest Regional Hospital Emer-gency Room, Drummond MedicalGroup’s Urgent Care Clinic or SageCommunity Health Center, as walk-insor by appointment. Legal assistance is providedto all active duty military personnel andtheir families; retired U.S. military per-sonnel and their family members; andreserve military members while per-forming active duty. An appointment is required and may be made by cal-ling 939-2203.

Legal assistance is provided onmost personal civil legal matters, inclu-ding wills, adoptions, name changes,consumer affairs, domestic relations,landlord-tenant disputes, personal fi-nances and debt collection. Any matterdiscussed with a judge advocate withinthe attorney-client relationship is privi-leged and confidential.

Assistance is also available in filingclaims for the loss or damage of person-al property during a move. An appoint-ment is necessary to file a claim and

The mission of the Research andEngineering Competency (4.0) is toprovide the people, processes and facil-ities necessary to support the maritimeresearch and engineering needs oftechnology development, system ac-quisition and product support of allnaval aviation aircraft, weapons andsupport systems.

This 50,000 square foot secure lab-oratory and test complex provides anenvironment for everything from com-ponent level testing of weapon systemsall the way to full force level battlespaceengagements. The IBAR is a node in abattlespace environment or networkcentric warfare setting and allows cus-tomers a “system” level approach to theproblem in an end-to-end environment.The IBAR is directly linked to the RangeControl Center at China Lake as well asthe F/A-18 Advanced Weapons Lab and,through a variety of commercially avail-able high-speed networks, may beconnected very quickly to other similarlaboratories and ranges for the purposeof distributed testing. IBAR is forgingthe way for finding new methods ofintegrating modeling and simulationwith live testing. This type of testing

allows repeatability, saves money andinstills confidence prior to live events.Collecting telemetry and other test dataand comparing with results of the sim-ulations allows verification, validationand analysis of the simulation environ-ment. Some of the customers using theIBAR are Sidewinder AIM-9X, RAM,SLAM-ER, DAMASK, ANGEL, JMPS andmany smaller developmental efforts.

Also in the Michelson Lab com-pound is the Engineering Laboratory,built in the late 1980s to provide, underone roof, a complete integrated engi-neering capability including engineer-ing and engineering support functions,product assurance, interactive graphicsand full documentation functions.

Lauritsen Laboratory, across theparking lot from Michelson Lab, is fully equipped for optical research and includes specialized test facilitiesfor realistic testing of equipment de-signed to function at sea or in the air.This laboratory is primarily used and

uniquely equipped for the research and development of laser and opticaldevices and components.

The Dr. Jon A. Wunderlich Laboratory,the Missile Engagement SimulationArena (MESA), supports existing andnew weapon systems development. It isdesigned specifically to simulate theterminal engagement of a guided mis-sile fuze with a target.

The high-bay simulation arena is150 feet wide, 405 feet long and 90 feethigh. The facility accommodates actualairframes, allowing precise motion/position control of fuze and target. Noother facility in the world has this com-bination of precision and the ability touse full-size targets.

Through a combination of innova-tive simulation technology and facility,the Wunderlich Laboratory offers cost-effective, timely and accurate data onmissile/target engagements. Amongthe uses of the multimillion dollar facil-ity are: evaluation of missile lethality,

evaluation of air-vehicle survivability,accurate measurements of sensorproperties and development of newanti-air weapons to meet new threats.While the lab is owned and operatedby the Navy, customers include allbranches of the U.S. military and pos-sibly allied military forces. The size ofthe facility allows China Lake to testfull size targets and fuzes. The new labhas the capability to use targets up to25,000 pounds.

The China Lake and Salt Wells PilotPlants, built early in the China Lake his-tory, now function as the China LakePropulsion Laboratories (CLPL), the U.S.Navy’s principal center of excellence forresearch and development of ordnanceand missile propulsion systems.

The physical plant comprises 45square miles of Mojave Desert withmore than 300 buildings located east ofthe China Lake main site area.

The laboratories have a solid rocketpropellant mixing capability from 1/4pint to 150 gallons; capability for extru-sion, melt-cast and injection loading ofexplosives; remote machining capabili-ties for propellants and explosives; andcasting capacity to six feet in diameter.Also in this area are specialized labs forair breathing propulsion, compositestructures, properties analysis, actua-tion and control, ballistics, energeticmaterials and fuzing.

CLPL engineers and scientists haveadvanced technology in a variety ofareas. Evidence of their numeroussignificant achievements and contribu-tions are found in U.S. weapons such asSidewinder, Sparrow, HARM, VerticalLaunch ASROC, Tomahawk and others.

Although the role of the China LakePropulsion Laboratories has changedover the decades from a productionplant to a research and developmentfacility, their mission remains to pro-vide the U.S. military with world-classtechnical capability for research anddevelopment of ordnance and propul-sion systems.

The Advanced Weapons Laboratory(AWL) is home to the F/A-18 WeaponSystem Support Activity (WSSA). TheWSSA provides life cycle systems engi-neering for USN, USMC and FMS F/A-18mission systems. The 84,480-squarefoot AWL comprises an aircraft hangar(28,000 sq. ft.); computer laboratory(29,000 sq. ft.); and office complex(27,000 sq. ft.). Sensor testing takesplace in a dual-level, 108-foot tall tower.

The facility, opened in June 1998,hosts the Software Development TaskTeam (SWDTT) and the InformationTechnology/Information Systems (IT/IS)Team. The facility is designed to house66 people with individual cubicles, aconference room and a library area.

The WSSA laboratory facilities canperform research, development, inte-gration and test of all variants of theF/A-18 weapon system. These elementscan include everything from a complete“full-up” F/A-18 suite to any selectedsubsystem. Testing can combine real orsimulated equipment, with real-timecontrol, monitoring and data collec-tion. The system can use real or simu-lated weapons, sensors and targets.Actual F/A-18 sensors are in the towerand can view the real world as well as a simulated “world.” The lab has

real-time links with the China LakeRange, GPS satellite simulator, elec-tronic warfare (EW) facilities, missile/weapon hardware-in-the-loop facilitiesand sensor labs. Via these links, thefacility can operate the F/A-18 testprocesses with increasing realism up tooperation with actual airborne aircraft,weapons, threats and targets. The AWLcomplex provides a high-fidelity simu-lation of all existing and future F/A-18functional capabilities.

The Technical Library operatesinformation facilities at China Lake. The Tech Library contains a sizable collection of scientific, technical, com-puter and managerial books, reportsand periodicals.

5.0 TEST & EVALUATIONThe T&E Competency for NAVAIR

WD is headquartered at Point Mugu.The competency is tasked with main-taining the technical knowledge,processes and facilities required tosupport the planning, conduct, moni-toring and reporting of tests for thedevelopment, production, evaluationand fielding of air warfare systems,subsystems and support systems.

Pacific Ranges and Facilities Department

The Pacific Ranges and FacilitiesDepartment integrates a comprehen-sive spectrum of land, sea, electroniccombat and ground test assets. AtChina Lake this includes 1,700 square

miles of dedicated land test rangesunderlying more than 20,000 squaremiles of restricted air space. Followingare descriptions of China Lake’s majorrange facilities.

The Strategic Systems PropulsionTest Facilities (Skytop) began in supportof the Polaris submarine-launched bal-listic missile program. Skytop remainsthe Navy’s largest and best instrumentedstatic-firing rocket motor test installa-tion. This includes a RadiographicInspection Facility, giving China Lakeunique abilities to support the develop-ment and introduction of improveddesigns for the Trident II strategic mis-sile system.

The Supersonic Naval OrdnanceResearch Track (SNORT) is a heavilyinstrumented track for very highspeeds, long-duration runs, heavy car-riages and controlled deceleration.Ejection systems, missiles, rockets,bombs and various components andguidance and fuzing systems are typicalSNORT payloads. SNORT is equippedfor environmental simulation (includ-ing rain) and evaluation during testruns and is unique in its utility for high-explosive runs.

Over the years, the China Lake testand research tracks have supportedeverything from rocket-fuze functions tospacecraft escape systems. The G-4Track ends in a 500-foot drop-off into anopen valley, providing a unique capabil-ity to evaluate test articles at altitudewithout launching aircraft.

The Land Range Facilities provide afull-spectrum T&E complex for conven-tional weapons and aircraft systems.With more than 1.1 million acres, theChina Lake land ranges provide a large,secure, highly-instrumented air-rangeand ground-range complex for testingof live and inert missiles, rockets, guns,lasers and aircraft systems. A broadselection of targets, both fixed andmobile, is also available for day or nightoperations, making the land ranges anideal environment for testing. TheCoso Tactical Training Range and Supe-rior Valley offer fleet aviators a variety ofrealistic targets for fleet training.

The Electronic Combat Range (ECR)is a secure, free-space laboratory thatprovides engineering support, analysisand training resources to developers,integrators, testers and users of sys-tems that counter or penetrate airdefenses.

Electronic warfare resources in-clude a full complement of actual andreplicated sea and land-based threatsystems, command and control (C2)systems, sophisticated instrumentationsystems, weapons fly-out models,unmanned air vehicle (UAV) runwaysand a hangar. These resources supportall types of electronic combat testing,training, tactics development, dynamicradar-cross-section (RCS) measure-ments and special operational training.

environment. Precision RCS measure-ments in seven frequency bands, highpower microwave testing, GPS Jam-ming, and Antenna Calibration are per-formed in this area.

Threat/Target SystemsDepartment

The Tactical Air Combat Range Inte-gration Facility (TARIF) provides devel-opment, integration, test, installationand test of software, weapons simula-tions and hardware upgrades to theNavy Tactical Aircrew Combat TrainingSystem (TACTS) and Air Force/AirNational Guard Air Combat TrainingSystem (ACTS) training ranges. Aircraftpositions are tracked and displayed.Weapon trigger events are down linkedand initiates the associated TACTSweapons flyout simulation with en-gaged aircraft or ground target. Endgame results are calculated and dis-played. Tactical training missions andweapons events are recorded for play-back during aircrew debrief.

The Aircrew Electronic Warfare Tac-tical Training Ranges (AEWTTR) Pro-gram provides system acquisition andintegration of surface-to-air electronicwarfare threat simulators for the EW

tactical training ranges. Simulators areintegrated with the associated weaponssimulations in the Navy TACTS andACTS and with range communicationmultiplexers. The emitted threat wave-forms from the threat simulators stimu-late the warning receivers of theengaged aircraft inducing a tacticalresponse from the aircrew.

The Electronic Combat ThreatSimulator Branch provides systemsacquisition from concept explorationthrough functional deployment ofthreat-based weapons and targets. Pro-jects include electro-optical, infrared,ultra-violet and RF simulation systemscovering a wide spectrum of existingand future threats. Threat simulatorsare integrated at the Electronic CombatRange for T&E of airborne ElectronicWarfare systems.

The Target Operations Division pro-vides the maintenance and operationand test and evaluation of airborne andseaborne targets. Airborne includesfull-scale aircraft and missile targets,sub-scale missile and towed targets.Seaborne includes self powered, towedand free floating targets. Targets areoperated on various ranges. Passiveand active full-spectrum augmentation

can be added to simulate a wide varietyof threats.

The Target Control Systems Branchprovides design, development, pro-curement, assembly and integration,installation, test, evaluation, confi-guration, and upgrades to Navy Target Control Systems and supports all Navyactivities operating Target Control Systems. Target control systems areused to control subscale and full scale,subsonic and supersonic aircraft andmissile targets for T&E of airborne andseaborne weapons systems.

Test Article PreparationDepartment

The mission of the Test ArticlePreparation (TAP) Department is to be a world leader in weapons and aircraft instrumentation. It developstechnologically advanced, high-accuracyand low cost telemetry systems to beconsistent with weapon and aircraft plat-form technology that is being evaluated,and it ensures data transmitted to theground meets customer requirementsand is compatible with range standards.

The Test Article Preparation De-partment utilizes people, facilitiesand resources from China Lake andPoint Mugu to design, fabricate andtest antenna and telemetry systemdesigns that incorporate data-encryp-tion, Global Positioning System (GPS)technology, inertial measurementunits (IMU), video compression and avariety of other customer specificrequirements. TAP can manufacturethese systems by utilizing one ormore of the following design/fabrica-tion techniques: surface mount andthrough hole circuit card design; thickand thin film hybrid microelectronicdesign; and advance packaging. Test-ing capabilities include telemetryspectrum analysis using anechoicchamber, RF antenna radiation pat-terns and automated test stationdesign, which provides componentlevel and system level testing capa-bility. Additional automated test setdesigns include testing flight termi-nation receiver performance for rangesafety applications.

Comptroller DepartmentThe Comptroller Department

serves as the principle advisor to thecommand and to all external authori-ties and organizations on financial matters and financial managementpolicies. The department directs andmaintains an integrated system ofoperations and systems involvingfinancial planning; programming; bud-get formulation, review and execution;financial management and executionprograms and systems; funding admin-istration; accounting; financial cus-tomer service; and reporting to ensurecomplete policy implementation. Itreceives, issues and ensures the properapplication for all funding. The depart-ment provides financial and accountingservices to all internal organizationsand to external organizations (tenants)as required; serves as liaison betweenthe itself and its customers, NAVAIRand other activities; evaluates financialperformance and project trends and ini-tiates actions as necessary to adjustplans, funds, costs, rates or resources;implements new financial accountingsystem design or modifications forNAVAIR WD.

Office of General CounselThe Office of General Counsel

serves as the counsel to and primarylegal advisor of the NAVAIR WD com-mander and staff within the frameworkof the Office of General Counsel (OGC)of the Navy. The counsel and staff pro-vide a wide variety of legal services tothe other competencies including, but

develop and retain a skilled work forcefor the Weapons Division at optimumcost and efficiency needed to supportthe NAVAIR WD mission.

Security DepartmentThe mission of the Security Depart-

ment is to provide security service toNAVAIR WD. Functions include theimplementation and management ofprograms to protect information, mate-rial and information systems from nat-ural or manmade disasters, loss, theft,sabotage, terrorism or espionage. TheSecurity Department coordinates for-eign disclosure and security clearanceactions to ensure personnel who han-dle classified information or areassigned sensitive duties are appropri-ately cleared; implements policy andaccredits ADP systems to handle classi-fied or sensitive information; controlscrypto material and equipment; andprovides assistance in identifying criti-cal information, obtains threat data,identifies vulnerabilities and imple-ments appropriate countermeasures.

Public Affairs DepartmentThe department functions include

media relations, community relations,public involvement, congressional liai-son, review of material intended forpublic release and internal communica-tions programs.

The Public Affairs Officer is the rep-resentative of the Weapons Divisioncommand and NAWS China Lake com-manding officer to the news media andthe public. All official contacts with off-Station news media and presentationsto the community must be coordinatedwith Public Affairs. A speakers bureauof available personnel to speak beforecommunity groups is maintained by thePublic Affairs Department.

The department provides publicaffairs counsel and services to allNAVAIR WD organizations and tenantsand a variety of information services tothe entire community, including thecommand newspaper, The Weaponeer,which is published bi-weekly on theThursday before payday.

Program and BusinessAnalysis Department

The Program and Business Analy-sis Department was established to best

China Lake provide the aircraft, aviatorsand aircrew to support the NAVAIR WDRDT&E mission. The F/A-18 Hornet andthe AV-8B Harrier are the principal air-craft flown by the Dust Devils, but allattack aircraft in the Navy and MarineCorps inventory, including the AH-1W,are used in the China Lake mission.More than 6,000 hours of test and train-ing flights are logged by WTS pilotseach year. Most of the test flights are insupport of aircraft weapons integrationprograms at NAVAIR WD.

7.0 CORPORATE OPERATIONS

The Corporate Operations Compe-tency provides a wide variety of sup-port, products and services that allowthe other competencies to achieve theirmissions. Functional responsibilitieswithin the competency include strate-gic planning, information systems man-agement, human resources, personnel,information and network security, andpublic affairs. These functions are per-formed within the 7.0 Competency indirect support of each of the other com-petencies. These functions cross theentire command and enable the othercompetency leaders to focus on theirspecific competency responsibilities.

Information Technology/Information ManagementDepartment

The Information Technology/Informa-tion Management Department (IT/IMD)provides IM products and services toNAVAIR WD competencies and teams. TheIT/IMD is organizationally structured toprovide these products and services byway of product-line projects and compe-tency-provided resources, processes andinternal support. The IT/IMD enables cus-tomers to exchange, share and store infor-mation when needed and provides thetraining required to use it. Those elementsthat make up IT/IMD infrastructure includecommunications, computing systems,software applications, support services,people, processes, skills/ training andguidelines, standards and policies.

Human ResourcesDepartment

The Human Resource Departmentprovides the full spectrum of programsand activities necessary to recruit,

8.0 SHORE STATIONMANAGEMENT

The Shore Station ManagementCompetency comprises personnel inthe Naval Air Weapons Station ChinaLake with the commanding officer ashead of the competency. The CO isresponsible for the physical infrastruc-ture of the entire facility — buildings,grounds, roads, utilities, environmen-tal, safety and physical security — andall elements related to its maintenanceand improvements and the welfare ofits military residents and tenant organ-izations. The men and women of the 8.0Competency are assigned the missionof operating and maintaining basefacilities and providing base supportservices, including airfields, for NAVAIRWD, assigned tenants and activities andtransient units. The 8.0 Competencyalso oversees such functions at the SanNicolas Island facility 60 miles off theCalifornia coast. Many of the compe-tency’s responsibilities are detailed inthe Services & Facilities and MWRsections of this brochure.

Military Services Department

Serving the military personnel, Mil-itary Services includes an administra-tive office staff, Retention Program,Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor,Equal Opportunity Program EducationalService Office and Military ManpowerDivision. They process incoming andoutgoing correspondence and messagetraffic on matters concerning militarypersonnel assigned to the Naval AirWeapons Station and certain personnelassigned to the NAVAIR Weapons Divi-sion. Military Services is also liaisonfor certain personnel administration

functions to the Personnel SupportDetachment and processes most mili-tary temporary and travel orders.

Supply DepartmentSupply performs the functions of

receiving, issuing, shipping, delivery,storage, inventory management, stockcontrol and personal property. It pro-vides the support for organizationaland intermediate levels of aircraftmaintenance and receives, stores,issues and delivers aviation fuels, liq-uid oxygen and liquid nitrogen for air-craft operations.

Facilities Support Department

Facilities Support is a serviceorganization, its mission is to pro-vide professional and technical publicworks engineering, planning, construc-tion, maintenance and transportationexpertise to its customers, both inter-nal and external, and to develop and maintain a work force that isexpert, innovative, efficient, motivat-ed, responsive, diverse, entrepreneur-ial and environmentally sensitive.

Public Safety DepartmentPublic Safety provides fire, force

protection, disaster preparedness andsafety services. The Fire Division pro-vides fire suppression, fire prevention,rescue, ambulance and emergencymanagement services. The Force Pro-tection Division provides law/trafficenforcement, vehicle mishap investi-gation, criminal investigation, visitorcontrol, pass and identification servic-es, physical security program services,disaster preparedness planning andsecurity alarm services. The Occupa-tional Safety and Health Divisionimplements the Navy’s explosive,occupational, radiation and recreationsafety programs.

Air Operations Department

Air Operations operates and main-tains airfield facilities, including runwaysand taxiways, arresting gear, optionallanding systems, airfield lighting, airnavigation aids, communication equip-ment, air traffic control tower, air termi-nal, including flight planning and airtraffic control services. The department

also coordinates fleet liaison require-ments, ensuring appropriate airfield orbase support facilities are available fortenant and visiting aircraft units.

Community SupportDepartment

Community Support is a serviceorganization that comprises Morale,Welfare and Recreation (Sports and Fit-ness, Aquatics, Outdoor Recreation,Golf, Wreck Center, ITT, Library, ChildCare, Youth Activities, Auto Skills Cen-ter, Bowling, Craftech and Stables),Family Housing, Personal Property,Combined Bachelor Housing and Fleetand Family Support Center. The mis-sion of the Community Support Depart-ment is to provide professional andtechnical quality of life services andexpertise to its customers, both inter-nal and external, and to develop andmaintain a work force that is expert,motivated, efficient, entrepreneurial,innovative, responsive and diverse.

Environmental Department

Environmental is responsible forensuring that the installation is in com-pliance with all applicable federal, stateand local laws and regulations, andwith Navy and DoD environmentalinstructions and policies. Environmen-tal also manages the natural andcultural resources programs includingendangered species and National Reg-ister of Historic Places properties. Thestaff represents the full spectrum ofenvironmental expertise to support notonly the installation mission, but thatof the program executive offices andacquisition managers as their missionsrelate to NAVAIR WD. Pollution Preven-tion is a cornerstone of Navy environ-mental policy. This function entailshazardous material management, haz-ardous waste management and solidwaste management.

AIR TEST AND EVALUATIONSQUADRON NINE (VX-9)

VX-9, originally Air Development Squadron Five(VX-5), was commissioned in 1951 at Naval AirStation Moffett Field, California, with 15 officers, 100enlisted men and nine AD Skyraider aircraft. Thesquadron, under the operational control of theCommander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force(COMOPTEVFOR) and under the administrativecontrol of Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific,moved to China Lake as an independent tenantcommand in 1956 to take advantage of vastlyimproved ranges and instrumented facilities. Thesquadron’s first commanding officer was CDR. T. J.Walker.

In June 1993, the Chief of NavalOperations directed the consolidationof VX-4 at Point Mugu and VX-5 atChina Lake into a single OperationalTest and Evaluation Squadron desig-nated VX-9. The consolidation wascompleted in April 1994.

Today, more than 300 VX-9 Vam-pires support 20 aircraft includ-ing the FA-18 Hornet, F-14 Tomcat,EA-6B Prowler, AV-8B Harrier and the AH-1 Cobra.

The squadron has kept pace withchanges and improvements of Navy/Marine Corps strike aircraft and attackhelicopters, conducting independentoperational test and evaluation of allair-ground and air-air weapons, new

aircraft such at the recently tested FA-18E Super Hornet and software up-grades to aircraft and weapons alike.Additional requirements have been metin testing electronic warfare, counteringdefensive systems through maneuversand expendables, on board jammers,and developing and refining tacticswhich support new technologies.

Marine Aviation DetachmentMarines have been stationed at ChinaLake since the beginning in 1943. TheMarines were assigned to the MarineBarracks China Lake. Initially, their mis-sion was to provide security for the test and development facilities located

here. When the Marine Barracks wasdecommissioned, Marine presence atChina Lake was significantly reduced.The Marine Corps maintained a liaisonoffice at China Lake, with their Head-quarters located at Point Mugu.

On January 12, 1988, the comman-dant of the Marine Corps activated theMarine Aviation Detachment at ChinaLake. Effective September 30, 1993, theMarine Aviation Detachment, PointMugu was disestablished as a separatecommand and integrated into theMarine Aviation Detachment, ChinaLake, conducting the same functionsbut consolidated under the administra-tive control of the detachment at ChinaLake. Marines assigned to the detach-ment support RDT&E efforts, as wellas provide support to Marine Corpsunits and programs that conductoperations and testing aboard the twostations. Marines also contribute tothe operational test and evaluationmission at VX-9.

EODMU Three DetChina Lake

EODMU Three Detachment ChinaLake is another tenant activity of the Naval Air Weapons Station. Liter-ally the local Navy “bomb squad,” the detachment provides routine andemergency services in explosive ord-nance incidents to NAWS, local, stateand federal agencies. The det alsodirectsthe NAVAIR Weapons Divisionin primary research, design, devel-opment, test and evaluation of airweapons and associated aircraft sys-tems into strike, anti-surface and anti-air warfare aircraft.

Other Tenant UnitsOperations at China Lake are sup-

ported and complemented by a numberof other tenant units. These include thePersonnel Support Activity Detach-ment, Defense Printing and Publica-tions Service Detachment Branch,Naval Criminal Investigative Service,Defense Investigative Services and rep-resentatives of the Western Division ofthe Naval Facilities Engineering Com-mand. The Branch Medical/DentalClinic described in the Services andFacilities section of this brochure isalso a tenant organization.

Ridgecrest Civic Center

RIDGECREST HISTORY Like many regions of the Old West, the Ridge-

crest area maintains a colorful history of NativeAmerican tribes, Spanish explorers and missionar-ies, gold prospectors and struggling settlers. It wasin 1912, however, that the area of the MojaveDesert known today as Ridgecrest was home-steaded by the Robertson family. John McNeilbought the land after Robertson’s death and start-ed a dairy. The next owner of the land and dairywas a man named Crum, and the area becameknown as Crumville.

SURROUNDINGCOMMUNITIES

Crumville grew slowly, remainingan isolated settlement for many years.In 1939, a store and gas station wereestablished by Bill Bentham. Benthamlater became the first postmaster ofRidgecrest. His daughter, Donna,became Ridgecrest’s first librarian whenshe was only 10 years old.

Initially, the residents of thissmall settlement wanted their owntown named Sierra View. Postalauthorities, however, had to reject thisname because there were too many“Sierras” in California. The nameRidgecrest was suggested by Mrs. AdaThompson because she knew a Ridge-crest in Missouri that had left her withpleasant memories.

In November 1963, Ridgecrest wasincorporated as a city, and its citizensadopted a council-administrator typeof government. With a current popula-tion of more than 26,000, Ridgecrest isthe county’s third largest city.

Ridgecrest TodayRidgecrest has the dual advantages

of a highly educated population andsmall-town amenities. The city is themain marketing and commercial centerfor the surrounding Indian Wells Valley.

Ridgecrest also offers services for thoseliving in Trona, 25 miles to the east,Johannesburg and Randsburg (in theRand mining district), 20 miles tothe south; and several other nearbycommunities.

A wide variety of shopping facilitiesand businesses is available in Ridge-crest. Major supermarket chains main-tain local stores and there are alsosmaller markets and convenience stores.Various financial institutions provideservices for the community, while allkinds of retail outlets meet the generalshopping needs of residents.

A central complex includes a postoffice, municipal court, county building,library and the Maturango Museum.This museum highlights the area’s pre-historic archeology, including Stone Agetools. Occasionally, the museum con-ducts guided tours into the nearby CosoHills on NAWS China Lake land, wherean array of Indian rock art are found.

A Civic Center complex, includingCity Hall and Kerr McGee CommunityCenter, opened in 1989. Designed toaccommodate the social and recre-ational needs of the community, KerrMcGee Community Center provides theperfect setting for a variety of special

events, including conferences, semi-nars, banquets, dances, meetings andreceptions. The four-acre city park onthe site provides a relaxing, functionalatmosphere for the many events stagedat the center.

Annual events include the Califor-nia State Agricultural Fair in Septem-ber, held at Desert Empire Fairground.Another major community event is theannual Spring Festival in May. Duringthis festival, local organizations partici-pate in tours, races, wildflower and artshows, among other activities.

Scores of clubs in Ridgecrest andChina Lake cater to virtually every con-ceivable interest. In particular, there aretheater groups, orchestras, choirs andother artistic organizations welcomingvolunteer performers or behind-the-scenes workers.

All major denominations haveplaces of worship in the valley. A list ofthese organizations is available fromthe Chamber of Commerce.

Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, SageCommunity Health Center, DrummondMedical Group and Southern SierraMedical Clinic provide health care forthe community, as does a large numberof well-qualified doctors and dentists.

The Sierra Sands Unified SchoolDistrict provides education for all valleyresidents, from kindergarten throughan adult evening school. A selection ofprivate schools is available as well.

The community also has opportu-nities for higher education. Cerro CosoCommunity College offers two-yeardegrees and vocational training in awide variety of subjects. Day andevening classes are scheduled year-round. Many classes are offered online.

City officials and China Lake Com-mand work as good neighbors to makethe Indian Wells Valley a pleasant placeto live and work.

Other CommunitiesAround China Lake and Ridgecrset

are a collection of cities and townsoffering a variety of things to do. Fromcountry living to cosmopolitan winingand dining, and from high tech centersto wide-open recreational areas, thesesurrounding communities provide a fullspectrum of activities for every taste.Following are highlights from each area.

Located about 10 miles west ofRidgecrest and China Lake, Inyokernis a small, semi-rural community ofapproximately 2,000 residents. The

name comes from its proximity to theboundary of Inyo and Kern counties.

Boron, located on Highway 58, isthe site of a giant open pit boraxmine. It is from the element boronthat the community got its name. Thispit is the largest in the world and eventhough it is not open to the public,you may learn its history at the Twenty Mule Team Museum, locatedon Twenty Mule Team Road.

Annual events at Boron includeTwenty Mule Team Days, which takeplace in October. In the spring, rockbuffs and amateur geologists flock toBoron’s Annual Rock Bonanza.

The seat of Kern County, Bakers-field is at the heart of California’s“Golden Empire.” It is a thriving, metro-politan community. There are morethan 140 retail establishments down-town, complemented by dynamic busi-ness centers, restaurants and theaters.Other major shopping areas includeValley Plaza and East Hills Mall, withmore than 130 stores combined, whichdraw shoppers from all over the region.

Located about nine miles east ofBakersfield, is Hart Park, a weekendsummertime haven for residents.Located on the banks of the Kern River,

the park is 370 acres of cool, greenquiet. Its large, leafy trees provideshade for many activities, includingbarbeques and picnics. The highwayleading out of the park connects withthe 28-acre Kern River Campgroundsand the 205-acre Lake Ming Park, whereswimming and boating are permitted.

Starting as a private commercialdevelopment, California City now ranksas one of the largest cities in land areain California.

Recreational areas include CentralPark, which offers swimming, boatingand fishing, lighted tennis courts, bas-ketball and volleyball courts, picnicfacilities, two children’s playgrounds,bicycle rentals and a marina facility.

Trona is an active mining town bor-dering Searles Lake, about a half-hour’sdrive east of the Station. The uniquemining process features mineralspumped from beneath the dry surfaceof a prehistoric lake bed using a water-extraction process.

relax and enjoy yourself. Some of themore popular destinations include:

An 11,000-acre manmade lake,Lake Isabella is the largest freshwaterlake in Southern California with 38miles of shoreline. A favorite destina-tion for residents, Lake Isabella offerscamping and hiking. Boats for fishing orexploration may be rented at the mari-nas found along the lake’s shores.Nearby, the quaint town of Kernvilleoffers plenty to do if you get tired ofroughing it outdoors.

The upper Mojave Desert is a landof dramatic contrasts. A few hours’ jour-ney can lead to hot springs, lakes,streams, mountains, towering forests,meadows, sand dunes and waterfalls.The area offers hiking, mountain climb-ing, snow and water skiing, swimming,boating and hunting.

The desert also is home to a phe-nomenon well known to camera buffsand naturalists: desert wildflowers inbloom. Around the end of March to thebeginning of April, the usually brown

and barren desert hills undergo adazzling change, becoming purple, redand yellow.

Another site for your camera is thebrilliantly colored Red Rock Canyon,site of many western movies. Locatedon SR 14, about 25 miles south ofRidgecrest, this 4,000-acre state andrecreation area consists of a hugeuplifted lake bed, shady hills and claycliffs eroded into fantastic shapes byhundreds of years of wind and sand.

While touring the high desert, visitthe historic Rand Mining District, locat-ed 20 miles southeast of Ridgecrest onHighway 395. Dotted with abandonedmines and equipment, visitors can toursome of the old mines where gold, sil-ver and tungsten were discovered. Themost famous of these is the YellowAster Mine, which has miles of tunnelsand produced $16 million worth of goldin its heyday.

Within four hours of China Lake, inthe Eastern Sierra Region are the popu-lar ski areas of Mammoth Mountain

and June Mountain, where a variety ofskiing is offered for all skill levels, setagainst a backdrop of spectacular ter-rain. Another popular ski center isfound at nearby Shirley Meadows in theGreenhorn Mountains. The region alsoboasts the trailhead for Mt. Whitney,the Sierra gateway city of Bishop anddozens of high-country lakes andstreams, where a variety of trout, sometrophy-sized, are stocked regularly dur-ing the fishing season by state and pri-vate hatcheries.

About three hours drive south ofthe station lies the City of Los Ange-les. This city, second largest in theU.S. and largest in California, isworld-renowned for its recreational,cultural and sporting events. A hun-dred miles further south is San Diego,home of Sea World and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. In addition,Southern California beaches make anexcellent weekend retreat for manydesert dwellers.
