Reflection on Last Week’s Readings Advent is a season of hope. It would be

hard to exaggerate the value of hope. It

is said that while there is life there is

hope. This has an even deeper meaning

in reverse: while there is hope, there is

life. As long as there is hope, no situa-

tion is impossible. It is the task of Chris-

tians to keep hope alive in the world.

Advent summons us to wait in joyful

hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus

Christ. In the final analysis, He is our

hope.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

St. Joseph School News

This holiday season students at St. Joseph Catholic Parish School have been able to spread joy to patients and staff at St. Mary Hospital. On the Feast day of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, patron saint of hospitals, students de-livered placemats with special messag-es made for patients spending Thanks-giving in the hospital. On Sunday De-cember 3, student returned to sing Christmas carols for the annual lighting of the St. Mary tree. These visits are a wonderful opportunity for students to carry out the Church's mission to serve the infirm. We invite all to come see how our students live out our mission to be Happy, Holy, and Helpful!

All parishioners are invited to join in celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Beginning Sunday evening December 11 at 7:30 with the Rosary, the celebration continues with dancing and praises and concludes with a Vigil Mass at 11:00 PM . Observances continue on the actual feast day, Monday, December 12 at 7:00 PM Mass followed by more dances and praises. We encourage all to attend and witness this beauti-ful celebration to our Lady!

Jesucristo. A fin de cuentas, es nuestra

esperanza.

THE LEGEND OF THE MISTLETOE

One day, the bright Lady of Heaven, the Pure Maiden, Mother of God, Came down for a walk in Earth’s garden, where here blest feet had long ago trod She smiled as she passed through the flow-ers, o’er her head shone a halo of light, A crown of rare pearls graced her forehead, and her garments were radiantly white. The rose was the first flower to greet her; it raised its stately head. “If you’ll deign dearest Lady to have me, from my stem you may pluck me,” it said. The came the soft voice of the lily; “Dear Lady I give unto thee My foliage green, my fragrance rare, and my chalice of purity.” The forget-me-nots “stars of the earthland,” approached with their offering too- Singing their praises to Mary, from their dew-kissed petals of blue.

After each flower had spoken and Mary had each one caressed, A low cry was heard in the distance, a cry that was sad and distressed. How quickly the dear Virgin hastened, for tender is Heaven’s fair Queen, Her heart always promptly responding to sorrow whenever ‘til seen. A humble and shy little green plant that grew in a rose bed near-by And which had only leaves and no blossoms was the one who had uttered the cry. “Little plant, tell me why art thou weeping?” She said when she found who was sad. “And why precious tears art thou shedding when all thy fair sisters are glad?” The low sobbing voice was soon silenced, “I have nothing to offer to thee. While the others are giving their blossoms, I have only dull leaves , as you see.”

The Mother of God sweetly smiling reached up to her bright golden curls; On the brow of the desolate weeper she place her thick chaplet of pearls. “Weep no more little mistletoe flower. I shall place you up high in a tree. You shall have shining pearls for your blossoms, a rare gift to offer to me. When next I come down to the earth-land to visit the flowers I love. Fare thee well, little mistletoe flower; I must go to my bright home above.” — Annie deNeri Sheridan, 1912
