Hello there.....and welcome to issue 89. Firstly this month, a correction from

the last issue: In 1976 I was 4, not 6. That is all. Anyhoo, hello again all, we hope you all enjoyed the plethora of

delights and, mainly, time off that April afforded. I don’t knowabout you but I could do with some time off to get over all thetime off. Sadly though, there’s only one official Monday skive leftbetween now and August, at the end of May, but I’m sure we’ll alldo our very best to try to soldier through and enjoy ourselves...

Talking of holidays, this month the Deep-Massive have mostlybeen AWAY, here there and everywhere, and specifically inBrighton, as you’ll see from Groove Hoob’s photo story later in themag. I did ask him to write a bit too, but he found it a bit trickymainly because he’s an inanimate stuffed toy, so I’ll have to do thisbit myself:

Basically, if you’re going down to stay in Brighton for anyreason, you could do a lot worse than book yourself into the hotelwe found, Kempfield House. Great location almost directly oppositethe pier, great value rooms with fantastic full English brekkiesincluded, friendly staff, a four poster bed and a nice welcome touchof a couple of half bottles of wine, some mints, nuts and free softdrinks in the minibar, oh, and a cracking Italian restaurant over theroad. Result! I know that sounds like an advertisement but, it’s not,we were just really quite impressed. If we could’ve worked out howto use the strangely complex shower array we’d have been evenmore impressed but hey-ho! Actually it was a fab weekend allround - who knew the pubs on the pier would be open at 10am onRoyal Wedding Day? Well, we didn’t, but we found out at about 5past...

Anyway, as usual we have the usual mixture of rubbish for youto enjoy this month, and happily we’re a tad less ‘Woman’s Own’this month with some actual music and stuff, hurrah!

Also as usual I’m absoultely shattered, it’s very late and I wantto go to bed, so that’s about it from me this month.

The mag will be back to usual size next month, when there willbe even more rubbish to enjoy, although, in fact, I’ve just

remembered, next month is our8th Birthday... I’m not evengoing to moot a party as wenever have the time toorganise anything, althoughhaving said that, we mightsurprise ourselves...

Right, that’s it, I’m off for akip. Enjoy the lovely weather aslong as it continues, and we’llsee you next month. Pip-pip,avanti, allons-y and CHEERS!Angelaxxx

A new music night launches this month in the surprising setting of the FairfieldHalls. First up for your edification and delight - Snowboy...

4

As one door closes, soanother opens, and asthe Clocktower shuts

(don’t get me started) so,somewhat surprisingly, theFairfield opens to an exciting newmonthly music night - Stand! - inthe Arnhem Gallery - with onefell swoop filling the mid-sizedvenue gap left by the BraithwaiteHall (seriously, don’t get mestarted) while also taking somemajor steps toward shedding its, let’s be honest here, slightly fustyimage. More power to theirelbow, we reckon!

Stand! is a collaborationbetween One Tree Musicpromoter Graeme Miall, a familiarname to anyone who appreciatesmusic in Croydon, and the venue,and is a genuine new direction forit, something that SimonThomsett, the CEO of Fairfield,acknowledges;

“The Fairfield Halls has a longand proud tradition of hostingsome of the best of contemporarymusic, from its opening in 1962right through to the modern era. However, the concert hall, whichseats over 1500 people, isn’talways the right environment foracts that benefit from a lessformal presentation.

“We’re lucky in having one ofthe largest flat floor spaces inSouth London in the ArnhemGallery and it’s the ideal space tocreate a new standing hall fornew music from both new andestablished artists.

“Stand! is made for audienceswho just want to come and hearexcellent new music in a relaxed

bar atmosphere“We chose to work with One

Tree Music because Graeme hasan infectious enthusiasm andknowledge of the contemporarymusic scene and an energetic andcrusading zeal to bring the best ofwhat’s out there to Croydon. Welike him because he likes music;it’s a great starting point!”

That enthusiasm, of whichanyone who managed to catch aband at The Oval Tavern over thelast seven years will no doubt be

aware, is echoed by Graemehimself;

“The Fairfield has a longreputation of staging landmarkconcerts and the plans to delivergreat gigs in the Arnhem reallyadds to the complex as a whole.

“This size of space is thin onthe ground for the South Londonmusic scene and is going to giveartists a great new mid-size venueto come and play.

“It’s very exciting to beworking with the Fairfield Halls asthey broaden their music offering, and we’re already getting anamazing response form actslooking to perform here.”

So far, so promising then, butStand! will, er, stand or fall on thequality of the acts. Happily, itlooks pretty good to us, withfuture nights booked for, amongstothers, Croydon’s very own David

McAlmont. But we’re gettingahead of ourselves - the launchnight on the 19th May is whatwe should be looking at, and hereis where Snowboy comes in...

For anyone who doesn’t know, and I have to admit, somewhatashamedly, that I was one ofthem, Snowboy (aka MarkCotgrove) is a UK-based AfroCuban percussionist, bandleader,DJ, music critic and journalist, andis mooted as the ‘UK’sAmbassador of Afro-Cuban funk’.

He’s been one of the maincornerstones for the British andEuropean Latin Jazz scene forover 15 years with his powerfulband, The Latin Section, comprised of a 'Dream Team' ofthe finest Jazz and Latin musiciansbased in the U.K.

As a non-Latin AmericanEnglishman, it’s a surprise thatpercussionist Snowboy appears inthe book ‘The Who’s Who OfLatin Music’. His band hasrecently been described as "oneof the top Latin Jazz acts in theWorld, alongside Eddie Palmieriand Bobby Sanabria" by leadingexpert in Afro Latin Music,Professor Robert Farris-Thompsonof Yale University. Snowboy has released 15 albumsand 20 singles in the last twentyyears and has performed all overthe world from Greece to

"The full range and history of most of theLatin-Jazz movements since about 1943 areincorporated in this music. This is certainly foryou" THE BEAT

Australia, Hong Kong to Ireland,Singapore to Scandinavia, theU.S.A., Japan, Canada, Turkey, allover Europe and many morecountries besides, with his ownband and with artists such as LisaStansfield, Mark Ronson, TheJames Taylor Quartet, Basia,Airto, Moreira and Jon Lucien. Hisheavy schedule as a sessionmusician has taken him to play on

Johnny Carson, Arsenio Hall andDavid Letterman's T.V. showsamongst many others with theabove artists. With these and hisown band he has also played a lotof the world's top festivals.

As a prolific DJ on the U.K.'sJazz Dance scene since the late1970's, in early 1983, Snowboywent on to take lessons from top

Brazilian / Cuban percussionexpert Robin Jones, and, afterteaming up with many musicians,he established himself as a bandleader and in-demand sessionmusician.

According to his biography, “Unlike many of today's

overly polished and/or blandLatin Jazz recordings, Snowboys'albums comprise of non-stop

Afro-Cuban Jams and catchyMambos reminiscent of the earlyworks of Eddie and CharliePalmieri and Tito Puente andshow a firm understanding of theLatin Jazz forefathers. His musichas been described as fiery, harddriving, up tempo, authentic AfroCuban Jazz”, which, if we’reanywhere near the mark, means

that if you like a bit of latin-edged jazz and funk, which wedo, and you like a bit of a furiousdance about, which we sort ofdo, and if you want to supportnew music ventures in Croydonand thus ensure that new andexciting things continue tohappen around here, which wealways do, you really, reallyshould get yourself along to theArnhem Gallery on the 19th May,which we most definitely are, sowe’ll see you at the bar, si?

Why Keith and Candice MariePratt now, I hear you ask?Well, because Keith and

Candice Marie Pratt are from ‘Nuts InMay’. See what we did there?

Mike Leigh’s Nuts in May was firstscreened on TV in 1976 as part of theBBC’s Play for Today series. It’sextraordinary to think that the nextplay he produced for the BBC, Abigail’sParty (I advise do not watch this playwhilst tinkering with psychedelic drugs),attracted 17 million viewers to BBC2.There was a strike on ITV at the timebut there might just be a correlationbetween adventurous programmingand people actually watching the BBC.

Anyway, the point about CandiceMarie and Keith, the central charactersof Nuts in May, is that they come fromCroydon and are therefore bothinducted into the magnificent hall offame that is Croydon’s Finest.

Keith (Roger Sloman) is a SocialWorker who is apparently still livingtent-bound in some folk festival c1968,which is where he left most of his hair.He is a tall, gangling chap who wearssandals and socks, is very much into hisnature, maps and banjo. He tries to actas though he is a free thinking, right onkind of fellow but in reality is one ofthe straightest, most repressed peopleyou could ever wish to meet.

Candice Marie, played by Leigh’sthen wife Alison Steadman, is acompletely genuine hippy. Long blondhair and floral dresses, flower fancying, stone polishing, fey in the extreme, apparently permanently dreaming. Sheplays the guitar accompanied by Keithand his banjo and sings in a ratherunpalatable reedy voice.

The play sees Keith and CandiceMarie going camping to Dorset in theirMorris Minor. The trip is well plannedwith an itinerary of interesting things tosee and do and the chance to sing afew songs around the camp fire. As thedays go on we realise despite his righton pretence Keith is a snob andcompletely unable to deal with otherpeople. Whilst Candice Marie pops inand out the tent like a little rabbitmaking friends, Keith gradually reachesboiling point either with the pair of

goers making too much noise or theWelsh student who Candice Mariebefriends and gives Keith the jealoushump.

Keith is a monster, and monstrousbecause there is a little piece of him inanyone that lives in the suburbs.Candice Marie almost isn’t there at all,a shadowy character devoted(miraculously) to Keith. Except for thestudent, himself an aspiring middleclass person, the other characters areannoying or vacant. Keith would be anuntold pain to spend time withanywhere but I sort of admire hiswillingness to stick up for himself. Theirony is that they have gone away toenjoy some freedom from routine butthey perish for the lack of it.

Candice Marie and Keith are noworse or better than other archetypesof the late 70’s. Keith is a monster butis he any more so than Howard Kirk inthe History Man? Candice Marie is a

much more sympathetic character thanSteadman’s later role in Abigail’s Party. The whole lot of them were flawedhence we find ourselves here and now.

Keith and Candice Marie clearly doget on despite their absurdity and dohave charm.. I never thought I’d saythis but what is wrong with playingguitar and banjo in a field having a bitof a singsong and wanting a bit ofpeace and quiet..?

If you haven’t seen Nuts In Maywe’d strongly advise that you do - it’svery funny and is now something ofcult viewing - but we’d also stronglyadvise you have a pillow handy to bite/ hide behind as the cringe-makingevents unfold before your eyes.

Keith and Candice Marie, we, andCroydon, salute you, as long as we’reallowed to do so within the guidelinesof the Country Code...

The marvellous and mildly bonkers people who decidesuch things as when it’s British Sandwich Week have, itseems, gone a bit nuts in May and thus there are a

plethora of different foodstuffs being officially celebrated thismonth (and yes, British Sandwich Week is one of them (16-21st May), and no, we’re not making any of this stuff up) soin a highly topical food section we’ve decided to try and cramas many of them in as possible...

National Asparagus Month: 1-31st May. Yes, ‘tis true, so celebrate this most British ofveggies (and aphrodisiac) with a simple Asparagus in Winerecipe, proving that luxurious food need not be complicated...

You will need:2 pounds asparagus, thick ends removed1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup white wine1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Method:1. Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Add asparagus andcook until just bright green, 2 to 4 minutes. Remove fromwater, rinse under cold water, and drain.2. Melt butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add wine,

salt and pepper, and stir until mixed. Stir in the asparagus, cook until thickened and serve immediately.

National Honey Week / National Herb Week /National BBQ Week:4-10th May / 6-12th May / 30th May-5th June respectively. It may be cheating, but if we do all these separately we’ll behere all day, so here’s killing three birds with one extremelytasty stone with BBQ Herb and Honey Pork Loin. Thisgreat pork loin roast is marinated in beer and honey, making ittender and flavoursome. Remember to use pork loin and notpork tenderloin. It will save you a lot of money. Also, pork loinhas more fat so it will stay moist.

Prep Time: 12 minutesMarinade Time: As long as possible, at least 1-2 hoursCook Time: 1 hour, 30 minutesServes 4 to 6

You will need:• One 2 and a 1/2 to 3 pound pork loin roast• Can of beer of your choice• 1/2 cup honey• 1/3 cup Dijon mustard• 1/4 cup chopped onion• 1/4 cup olive oil• 3 cloves garlic, minced• 2 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves / 2 sprigs or so fresh• 1 and a half teaspoon salt• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Method:1. Place meat in a large sealable plastic bag. 2. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over pork. 3. Seal bag and allow to marinate in refrigerator for 1-2 hours. 4. Preheat grill to medium heat. 5. Remove pork from bag and place on rotisserie over drippan, or you can just turn the roast regularly (at the same timeas basting - see (8) below).6. Reserve marinade - while pork is cooking, simmer marinadefor 5-7 minutes. 8. Remove marinade from heat and baste roast with it every20 minutes until cooked through. 9. Roast should cook for 1 1/2 hours or so.

Also for National BBQ week, Grilled Sardines, which are, inthe Deep Massive’s humble opinion, the tastiest things EVERon a BBQ.

You will need:• 6-8 medium sized fresh sardines• Sea Salt• Lemon

Method:1. Scale and gut the sardines (you can have your fishmongerdo this). 2. Wash the sardines under cold, running water and pat drywith paper towels. Lightly salt the sardines with coarse seasalt.3. Pop your sardines on the barbie. When they’re done on oneside, turn them over and cook the other side. 4. Remove from the BBQ, garnish with lemon slices and eat.5. Feel like you’re on holiday...

National Vegetarian Week:23-29th May. We here at Deep-Towers are confirmedcarnivores, but that doesn’t mean we don’t do veggie, especially when it’s probably even less healthy than what wenormally eat, given the sheer amount of fromage in thisCheese and Spinach Veggie Lasagne. Thanks to StewartWatson’s cousin for the recipe, and this is one that’s ideal forsummer picnics and BBQs as it tastes as good cold the nextday as it does hot...

You will need:• 1 and a half pound Spinach (680g)• Lasagne sheets • 1 jar plain tomato pasta sauce• 1 onion• Garlic clove• 250g Cottage Cheese• Mozarella cheese - 1 normal sized ball• 1 and a half cups grated medium Cheddar Cheese• Parmesan Cheese• Egg• Nutmeg• Salt and Pepper• Breadcrumbs

Method:1. Steam spinach2. Fry or sautee the onion and garlic then add the spinach andsautee until it’s dried out a bit (not too many juices left in it).3. In a bowl mix up the cottage cheese, cheddar, egg, nutmeg(just a pinch), salt and pepper4. Put half of tomato pasta sauce in the bottom of a lasagnedish5. Layer 1/3 of lasagne sheets on top6. Layer half of spinach then half of cottage cheese mixture7. Layer next 1/3 of lasagne sheets on top8. Layer other half of spinach and other half of cottage cheesemixture on top9. Layer sliced mozarella cheese on top of cottage cheeseymixture10. Layer last 1/3 of lasagne sheets on11. Pour on other half of tomato pasta sauce12. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and parmesan to cover13. Bake for 40 mins or so at around gas mark 5 (390F /200C)14. Check pasta is cooked through before serving15. Dig in!

National Watercress Week:16-21st May. Told you there were some weird weeks goingon. I love watercress though, so here’s a TraditionalWatercress Soup.

Preparation time: 5 minutesCooking time: 15 minutesYou will need:• 15ml/1 tbsp olive oil• 1 small onion, chopped• 1 small stick celery• 350g/12oz potato, peeled and diced• 600ml/1pt chicken or vegetable stock• 3 (85g) bags watercress• 150ml/ 1/4 pt milk• pinch of nutmeg• squeeze of lemon juice• salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method:1. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and celery andsauté over a medium heat for 5 mins until pale golden. 2. Stir in the potato and stock and bring to the boil. Cover andsimmer for 10 mins or until the potato is tender.3. Stir in the watercress, cover and cook for a further 5 minsor until the watercress is wilted. 4. Transfer the soup to a food processor and blitz untilsmooth. 5. Return the soup to the rinsed out pan add the milk, nutmeg, lemon juice and seasoning to taste. 6. Gently reheat until piping hot and serve with crusty bread..................................................................................

Towel Day:And finally, apropos of it being Towel Day, the universalcelebration of Douglas Adams and the Hitchhikers Guide ToThe Galaxy, on the 25th May, here’s a recipe for a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster. One of many recipes underthe same name, however, it does differ from some of the moremundane versions in that it is actually served in an Ottawanightclub - Zaphod Beeblebrox - and tastes fantastic despitenot being quite as potent as the recipes involving Everclear,Bacardi 151 and all that lark. It also glows under ultra-violetlighting... Raise a glass (just the one, though, it’s still prettylethal) on the day and feel “rather like having your brainssmashed out with a slice of lemon, wrapped around a largegold brick”. Drink accompanied by peanuts, proudly wearingyour towel, but most of all, DON’T PANIC!

You will need:1 oz Jack Daniel's Tennessee whiskey1 oz peach schnapps4 - 6 oz orange juice1 splash Blue Curacao liqueur

Method:Shake the orange juice, the Jack and the peach schnapps in ashaker 3/4 full with ice cubes. When it's chilled, strain into thehighball glass and drizzle some of the blue Curacao liqueurover the top of it. Add a lemon twist and enjoy.

Well, we say enjoy, it’s hard to enjoy anything when youlive far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionableend of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy near a smallunregarded yellow sun. “Sorry, did I say something wrong?Pardon me for breathing, which I never do anyway so I don'tknow why I bother to say it, oh God, I'm so depressed...”

Hello again folks. Well! Bless mycotton socks, what a fantasticApril we’ve had this year. Jam-

packed full of bank holidays, sunshine, happy events, bunting and fun, I’vebeen trying to forget the dismal fiscalstate of things and get on with havingsome good, cheap fun. I say cheap, although I did start off by throwingaway £4 by unsurprisingly putting it onthe wrong horse at the Grand National.I arrived at Edith’s on the morning inquestion to find out she’d clearly beenpet scrumping overnight, beingsuddenly in possession of a dog, ahamster and two noisy budgerigars. It

transpired to be another one of Edith’shair-brained money-making schemes, inspired by Adam the Farmer ofCountryfile / Lambing Live fame, she’ddecided animal husbandry was the wayforward and was collecting specimensfuriously.

After, as I said, failing to win ourbeer money on a horse, we set off tothe Oval for Junk Time Party’s 10thbirthday party, and what a party thatwas! The pub was jammed and JTPwere jumping as usual. Quite a fewregulars from the Croham were doingimpromptu shifts behind the bar to helpout but with hindsight it would havebeen more sensible to buy two or threedrinks at once. However, we wereforced to leave when the band stoppedplaying and a DJ took over, playingsome kind of mind-numbingly boringrepetitive dross and Edith threatened toliven things up by raffling her dentures. We were intrigued to spot a poster forCroydon Folk & Blues Club advertisingtheir Swingers Night, until I realised mybeer goggles had inserted a ‘w’ whichobviously changed things considerably.

With the Royal Wedding looming, Idecided to do something useful andconduct a country-wide survey of streetdecorations. My bunting-hunting

expedition took me first to London, which was strangely subdued Ithought, and then on to Suffolk.Newmarket was beautifully decked outand I stopped for the night inLowestoft where I was in such a hurryto get off the coach (I knew I shouldhave packed some Tena-Lady) that Ileft my lovely faux wolf-skin cape onthe coach. There are advantages tohaving distinctive clothing you know, asafter a quick phone call to Yarmouthlost property, the kind gentleman wasonly too pleased to put it back on thenext coach back to Lowestoft for me tocollect and the coach driver, Penfold,

gingerly handed it to me with thewords “Are you sure it’s dead?” Mynext stop was Great Yarmouth whichwas gaudily decked out with flags(mostly the free one in The Sun),bunting, and all kinds ofcommemorative tat which was sellinglike wildfire. Whilst there, I met a veryhelpful man who told me that the bestplace for bunting is Thetford, soobviously that was my next port of call. However, when I arrived, it seemedrather devoid of anything red, whiteand blue so I made enquiries in thelocal post office and was directed toThe Nunnery. I arrived at the BritishTrust for Ornithologywhere a nice gentlemanpointed up into the trees -“There’s one, a chestnut-breasted bunting, andlook, there’s a rockbunting.” That wasslightly more my style butI made my excuses andheaded off to my nextport of call, Warwick.

Warwick was deckedout beautifully butLeamington Spa wasbetter with flags flutteringmadly from all the shop-

fronts and pubs. I was slightly put offby being charged nearly £8.50 for apint of beer and a glass of wine andalso by the fact that Beefeater menusnow show the calorie count foreverything on the menu (surely whenyou’re eating out you don’t want to bebothered by all that guilt?) And talkingof guilt, did you know that it’s actuallyillegal to eat a Hot Cross Bun on GoodFriday? No, I didn’t either butapparently we’re all breaking the law.

My final stop was Brighton, actuallyon Royal Wedding Day itself, which Ihad expected to be far more over-the-top than it was, but people seemed tobe having fun nevertheless. At last itwas back home to sunny Croydon towatch an abbreviated version of thewedding on the evening news, and alovely wedding it was too, especiallythe hattage. My compliments go toPrincess Beatrice for daring to wearsuch a travesty of an hat in a publicplace - and what is it with stapling yourhat to the front of your forehead? Itwas never like that in my day!

I’ll be back down to earth nextmonth and, in the meantime, I’ll seeyou under the bar.

Or, Beard & Sandals Monthly, or, Furry Animals, Plants & Stars, or, Tree-Huggers Unite. It’s the Deep-London Page Of Nature. . .

More pottering from the Deep-London shed, which is nowmore like a greenhouse thanks

to the weather...

Bad news on Deep-London’s home-brewing shenanigans in that wehaven’t got around to it yet

because we’ve been away for most ofthe month. But! We have thetechnology and the experts and will bestarting it next month, promise...

If you planted some chilli pepper seedslast month they should, with any luckand given the beautiful weather, have

popped their little green heads out bynow, so here’s what to do next:

1. Your chillies now have but onedesire - light! Like we said last month, our is on a south facing window ledgeand, from being pretty dormant a monthago has now gone absolutely mental(see pic below).

2. Water your chillies 2 or 3 times aweek so that the soil is damp (notsoaked). Overwatering on a regular basiswill cause the roots to rot.

3. Repotting. When your chilli’s rootsstart to poke throught the drainageholes in your pot, repot them to a biggerreceptacle. You may have to do this acouple of time depending on the size of

your plants.4. You will eventually see flowers

developing on the plant, leave them onand they will die after a few weeks andchillies will form. Once the plant isproducing fruit you can help it along bygiving it a small amount of organic liquidfertiliser every few weeks (tomato foodis good for this).

5. When the plant is around 6 inchestall you can remove the growing tip, thiswill encourage the form of the plant tobecome more bush like. Chillies canreach around 60cm in height and can besupported with a garden cane or othersuitable stake. This may be necessarywhen the plant is fruiting heavily.

6. The Chillies should take a fewweeks to develop and will take a furthercouple of weeks to change from greento red. You can harvest them when theyare Green or Red. They will start toshrivel after they have been on the plantfor a while but they can still beharvested and used at this stage.

7. The longer you leave the chillies onthe plant, the hotter in flavour they willbecome. Leaving the chilli on the plantafter it is ready for harvest will result in adecline in further yields.

8. If you have a large amount ofchillies ready for harvest at the sametime and can't use them up fast enoughthen harvest and freeze any excessfruits.

The weather’s lovely and it’s time to getout and about and commune withnature (well, the page is subtitled Beardand Sandals monthly...). We at DeepTowers, and especially the Shed, likenothing better than a dib around withsome wildlife, in which vein we’vepreviously brought you, amongst others, the delights of Beaver Water World andFanny’s Farm. This month we tried tofind somewhere with an equally amusingname, a quest in which we failed, butwe did stumble across the British WildlifeTrust, which we didn’t know existed butwhich is just down the road in Lingfield.

According to its website, the BritishWildlife Trust was founded in 1997 bysuccesful dairy farmer David Mills.

“In 1994 David ceased farming in

order to realise a second dream ofsetting up a centre to educate peopleabout our native wildlife. At first wewere only open to pre-booked groups, but in 2000 we were able to open to thepublic.

“We have been growing slowly butsteadily since, enhancing the Centre togive visitors more to see and more tolearn about Britain’s fascinating wildlife.

“Our objective remains the same - tohelp people learn more about our nativewildlife in the hope that they too willwant to protect it for future generationsto enjoy.”

Among the 40-odd species you cansee at the centre are adders, loads ofdifferent types of owls, minks, moles, badgers, muntjacs, otters, pine martens, black & brown rats, polecats, rabbits, buzzards, red deer, red & grey squirrels, fallow & roe deer, field & water voles, foxes, stoats, grass snake, harvest, wood, house and yellow-necked mice, weasels, hedgehogs, kestrels andwildcats. All the animals live in settingsthat reflect their natural environmentand much of the area is outdoors, although there are plenty of undercoverareas such as The Barn, The Hedgerowand an observation Badger Sett, meaning there is much to see at anytime of the year and most animals canbe seen whatever the weather.

They also have loads of facilities suchas picnic areas, a visitor centre, gift andcoffee shops, regular keeper talks, animal adoption schemes and all sorts, all set in 20 acres of wetland, woodlandand grassland habitat. They only open atweekends unless it’s a school holiday, ofwhich there is yet another imminent, sowhy not get out and about and maybestare at a weasel or two. We will be...British Wildlife Centre, Eastbourne Road(A22), Newchapel, Lingfield, Surrey RH7
