Message from the Principal
Dear Families of Deer Park, What a successful opening! I’m so proud of all the students, parents, and staff for starting the school year off on such a positive note. There is nothing like the positive emotion and spirit of the first day of school. It’s in our hands together to seize the opportunity to capture that energy and sustain it through-out the year. As it looks, I’d have to say we’re off to a great start. I’d personally like to thank our families for following school procedures. Following the guidelines we have outlined from traffic patterns to visi-tor sign-in has ensured that our students are safe and ready to learn each day. If you are new to Deer Park, I extend a warm welcome to you. For those returning to Deer Park for an-other wonderful year, welcome back. If I haven’t had the chance to meet you in person yet, my name is Renee Jenkins. I trust that everyone has had a great couple of days as we lay the foundation for count-less successes for the 2013-2014 school year. As always, you can count on your “subscription” to our monthly newsletter, Deer Park Times, to keep you up-to-date on the happenings in and around our great school. You can expect “home delivery” on the first Thursday of each month. Baltimore County Public Schools continue to focus on improving student achievement for all students, maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment, and using resources effectively and efficiently. With BCPS goals at the forefront, our instruction will continue to be driven by the instructional stan-dards found in the Common Core State Curriculum. The BCPS core curriculum will enable us to meet and exceed these standards with opportunities for acceleration, enrichment and intervention based on individual need. Everything your child will learn this year is also available at www.bcps.org or www.mdk12.org. Both sites also have great resources to support your child at home. As a reminder, please plan to join us for our Back to School Night on Tuesday, September, 10th , from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to learn about the exciting activities and learning that our students will take part in this year. The evening will also include a VOLUNTEER TRAINING SESSIONS at 5:30 p.m. Volunteer training is mandated in all Baltimore County Schools to anyone who wishes to volunteer within the school or school sponsored activity. This includes field trips. Please contact Ms. Milli with any questions regarding training. Our entire evening is intended for adults. Please make every effort to secure childcare so that we can maintain the focus of our evening. If you need anything, have a question or concern, or just want to share some good news, we are always here and ready to support you.

Do you have a reluctant reader at home?
September is the perfect time to establish new routines in order to help your child meet the new year with success in reading! Here are some strategies to help you get started:
1. Allow students to choose their books.
2. Use materials other than books (magazines, newspapers, comics, etc.).
3. Find books about your child’s passions (animals, dinosaurs, outer space, etc).
4. Get students hooked on a series (Magic Tree House, Wimpy Kid, Boxcar Children, etc.).
5. Let reading be fun.
6. Let reading be reading (not worksheets, or questions).
7. Make reading social (have them join a book club or you can read what they are reading).
8. Read aloud to your children.
9. Use technology.
10. Get caught reading; be a role model.
11. Provide time for reading.
12. Let children create a cozy reading nook.
Does your child read ALL the time?
Here are some strategies to help you direct and motivate your child:
1. Show interest in what your child is learning.
2. Let your child teach you.
3. Help your child connect his/her learning to everyday life.
4. See that they get enough sleep!
5. Have conversations about books.
6. Volunteer in their classroom.
7. Surround your child with reading materials.
8. Have family reading time.
9. Make going to the library a habit.
10. Let your child read to you.
11. Encourage vocabulary and word learning.
12. Join or create a book club.

School Counselor’s Corner
One of my jobs as an elementary school counselor is to lead the Character Education Program. During the month of September we will be focusing on our Code of Conduct and primarily on the value of responsibility for our own behavior. Our emphasis so far has been on demonstrating responsibility by doing our best at achieving high grades on the section of our report cards that is entitled Learning Skills/Behavior as well as putting a lot of effort into our work so that we can get a 1 or 2 for effort grades. The following is a list of the items in this section of your child’s report card that deals with Responsibility for our behavior. Please talk to your child about these items:
Follows classroom and school rules.
Shows respect for people and property.
Works cooperatively with others. The third part of our Code of Conduct states that we are ready to learn. The following is a list of items under Learning Skills/Behavior on our report card that deal with being ready to learn. In addition, students that are ready to learn work hard so that they can earn high marks (1’s & 2’s) for effort. Please talk with your children about these items that they will find on their report cards:
Completes class work on time.
Completes and returns homework.
Actively participates in learning tasks.
Uses a variety of technologies and other resources for learning. The first item of the code states that we will be respectful to others; teachers, students, principals, and all other adults in our building. Even though we will not concentrate on the value of respect until the month of October, we would still love it if all of our parents would talk with their children about this value now. Once again, throughout the entire year we will be talking about peace. Along with this idea, we will be talking about how to use peaceful conflict resolution skills when solving our problems, how to treat others with respect, kindness, caring, etc., as well as how to control our anger. Please help us by talking with your child about how they can practice peace throughout their day. If you have any concerns or questions that I can help you with, please don’t hesitate to call me at 410-887-0723, or email me at [email protected].
