This Month at Deer Park

FEBRUARY 1, 2016 NEWSLETTER

Some people have a way with words;

it is their God-given gift. If you were blessed with this gift, and want to use it to cheer up a

person who is homebound, in the hospital, or bravely serving in our Armed Forces, please contact Myra Huckabee

and help build our Deer Park CARD BRIGADE MINISTRY by

reaching out to our church members and their loved ones on holidays, their birthdays or for no reason at all other than to let

them know that someone is thinking about them. Myra can be reached at 843-259-0320 or [email protected].

Sending God’s love in a card!

Good Cheer Bags

From Your Pastor Food Pantry News

Are You Ready For Some Football?

The Deer Park Family will be excited to know the following

results from last year’s ministry:

The Deer Park family donated 3,702 pounds of food to our Food Pantry!

Our grocery store partner donated 10,140 pounds of food

to our Food Pantry!

2,366 individuals were served in 2015 — an average of 45

people per week!

A big Thank You to the 26 Deer Park Food Pantry volunteers who attended training in January. This training will help us more promptly and efficiently serve our Food Pantry patrons.

Thank you to the Deer Park family for your donations to the

Food Pantry, whether it be food items, money or time. This ministry couldn’t function without your support!

Have you ever wondered how you can be “happy”? Our

society is consumed with self-help books and seminars that promise a new method or thought process that will make you

a happy person. We live in a tough world, and sometimes it seems that happiness is just a far out concept or that you may only be happy until something bad happens. I once read

that “happiness” depends on what “happens”. The Bible teaches us that true, lasting happiness is found in a personal

relationship with Jesus Christ.

Beginning this Sunday, we will be focusing on “The Beati-tudes” found in Matthew 5:2-12. The Beatitudes are part of

Jesus’ teaching from “The Sermon on the Mount” where He teaches His followers how to live a blessed life. I hope that you will be here this Sunday as we begin this journey through

“The Sermon on the Mount.”

One of the many great joys I have as your Pastor is seeing how God is using individuals and groups from Deer Park to do

His Kingdom work. Each week I see so many volunteers serving the Lord out of a heart of thankfulness and love. I want to thank you for allowing the Lord to use you to help

connect others to Him and to connect people to other people. As you and I love God and love others, He will use us for His

Kingdom.

I am very thankful to have the privilege to serve as your pastor. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday morning in Sunday School at 9:45 and worship at 11:00.

I Love Being Your Pastor!

Stephen

SummerSalt Reminder

Registration Forms for SummerSalt 2016 (June 20-24) can be found in the Youth Room upstairs and are due to Bobby — along with a $50 non-refundable deposit — by March 27th.

Beginning January 31st, at 5:00 p.m. in the Senior Adult

Building, Tom Huckabee will be facilitating a 2-part DVD series entitled “Hermeneutics.” Ask most Christians what they know

about hermeneutics and they will probably ask, "Herman Who?"

Spend the next two Sunday evenings with us and receive a condensed education on how to read the Bible right. You will

never read the Bible the same way again... and you will never have the wool pulled over your eyes by a false teacher.

Paul told Timothy (and us) to "Be diligent to present yourself

approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

The next Go-Getters meeting will be Tuesday, February 9th at

6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All adults aged 55 years or older are invited. This will be the annual Valentine’s meeting,

with singer Michael Viljac scheduled as the entertainment.

This meeting will include a “potluck” meal with the fried chick-en being provided. Plan to bring your favorite side dish to share and complete the meal.

Also for this meeting, all Go-Getter participants are being asked to bring a new pair of men or women’s socks. The socks will be added to “Good Cheer Bags” for those in our community

who may need a helping hand (see article above). Each meet-ing, a different small item will be requested to add to the bags.

Go-Getters Senior Ministry News

In order to give immediate help to those in need in our

community, whether it be through the office doors, the Food Pantry, the Men’s Ministry, West Virginia or the Free Yard

Sale, Deer Park will begin collecting items to put in something we call “Good Cheer Bags.”

We would like this to be a year-round effort, with a goal of having a minimum of 50 Good Cheer Bags on-hand at any

given moment. Following is a list of suggested items requested to fill the bags: a new pair of men’s or women’s

socks and travel-sized items such as tissues, first-aid kits, shampoo, washcloth, lotion, mouthwash, deodorant, soap,

toothpaste and toothbrush.

Donated items are to be placed in the basket labeled “Good Cheer Bags” in the Missions Corner. See Gene Retherford in the church office with any questions.

New 20/20 Series

Our Child Development Center will be

holding a Book Fair from Sunday, January 31st through Feb. 11th in the 1st & 2nd

grade Sunday School classroom (end of the 1st floor hall in the Educational Build-ing). The CDC’s library will get a percent-

age of the sales. The Fair will be open 30 minutes before and after morning worship

service and evening activities on Jan. 31st and Feb. 7th. Thank you in advance for your support!

CDC Book Fair

On Sunday, Feb. 7th at 6:00 p.m., all Deer Park Youth and

their families are invited to gather in the Youth Rooms upstairs in the Education Building for a Super Bowl Party!

Besides watching the big game on the big screen, the pool table, air hockey, ping-pong and other games will also be available. Other quick reminders:

Admission is a canned meat item for our Food Pantry.

Bring a drink and some kind of “tailgating

food” to share.

Invite a friend!
