This week the Lady Rockets picked up two district wins with victories over Casey County 53- 37 on Friday night and Somerset, 57-49 Tuesday night. The Lady Rockets, who are now 8-7 on the year and still ranked number two in the 12th region, took the opening tip against Casey County and never looked back. The Lady Rockets were ahead by only six at half-time, but Christi Noble’s squad turned up the offensive heat in the second half, outscoring the Lady Rebels 32-22. The Lady Rockets leading scorer, junior Sarah Rowe got 23 of the Lady Rockets 53 points and also had six rebounds on the night. Point guard Mary Saylor had a good floor game and scored 11 points, eighth grader Sara Hammond had 8, Tonya Lunsford 6 and Jillisa Lay and Katy Mattingly each scored two points. On Tuesday night the Lady Briar Jumpers of Somerset came to the ROCK and gave the Lady Rockets all they wanted in front of a large crowd. At half-time the Lady Rock- ets were behind 27-25 but their man-to-man half court defense in the second half proved too much for the visiting team. ‘I think our tough schedule early in the season has helped our younger players to not panic when they get behind,” Noble said. “They know if they play hard and play their game, they have a chance to win every night out,” she said. Sara Hammond and Sarah Rowe led seven Lady Rockets in scoring Tuesday night with 15 each. Saylor had 8, Mattingly and Ashley Robinson each got 6, Tonya Lunsford, 4 and twin sis- ter Sonya 2. (Cont. to A12) In district action Rockets lose to Rebels and Briar Jumpers By: Richard Anderkin The dismal season of 2006- 07 continues for the Rockcastle County Rocket varsity basket- ball team, after two district losses in the past week. Tuesday night the Rockets got off to a slow start against the Somerset Briar Jumpers, scoring only 16 points in the first half and finding themselves down, 30-16. Offensively things got a lot better for the Rockets in the sec- ond half, when they put 29 points on the board, but they gave-up 30 to the Jumpers mainly because of a press that did not work for a final score of 60-45. The Rockets are 2-7 since de- feating Somerset in their first meeting 53-51 and again on Tuesday night poor shooting and almost no rebounding, spelled doom for the Rockets. “At times we played hard and other times we looked like we didn’t know we were on the basketball court,” head coach Benny Blanton said. The Rockets, who are aver- aging over 21 turnovers per game, outdid their season aver- age on Tuesday night with 23 turnovers. “We have done everything we know to do to emphasize the importance of taking care of the basketball and obviously noth- ing has worked so far,” Blanton said. And in all fairness to Blanton and his coaching staff, the Rockets are not only turning the ball over, when they do get an open shot, they can’t find the bottom of the basket. The Rockets, who are 3-11 on the season, are shooting 35 percent from the field, 23 per- cent from three point range and only 58 percent from the free throw line.
