(funded through music education OSAP assistants and self-funding)

Collaborative Principal Investigator: with Lee Bartel, Faculty of Music

Assisted by graduate assistants.

Description: This is a qualitative study of the narratives of musicians and non-musicians

recounting experiences with the learning of music from significant teachers. These

narratives have been analyzed for verification of the Cambourne Model or for

modification of the model. Narratives were solicited in an article published in the

Canadian Music Educator, 1996 and from students at the Faculty of Music and OISE/UT.

Several papers have been written and presented reporting the findings. Another pilot

study is underway with the assistance of a graduate student involving interviews with

several levels of teachers and students.

1998 CTL small scale pool $2,000

Peel District Board of Education Start-Up Funding $20,000

1998-2001 Large Scale SSHRC grant $93,000

Description: This research program will explore educator-student micro-interactions by focusing

on: 1) the envisioned curriculum, i.e., the theoretical and idealized understanding of curriculum

and pedagogy in contexts of diversity; 2) the enacted curriculum, i.e., educators' actualization of

their conceived instructional and social roles; 3) the experienced curriculum, i.e., living and

learning in a context of diversity; and 4) the re-visioned curriculum, i.e., a refinement of the

theoretical to reflect the complexities of the interplay between the envisioned, the enacted and the

experienced curricula.

Unfunded Research:

Full-Day Kindergarten. Reviewed academic, government, and international literature regarding the provision of

full-day kindergarten, and provided a literature review, summary and interpretation for the purpose of teacher and

program advocacy to the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) (February 2008 – June 2008)

The Pink Project: Growing up as a girl in the 21st Century (September, 2007 – present)

Collaborating within a graduate student research team, reviewing relevant literature from academic, professional,

journalistic and popular sources; designing and conducting a qualitative research project involving personal

interviews and focus group discussion on „What it means to be a girl, aged 5-11, growing up in the 21st century”,

and; disseminating findings through writing and publications, as well as academic, community and media

presentations.

Pegasus Research Project: Exploration of Toytexts (2005- present)

This Early Childhood Education research project began as a course assignment exploring childhood resources and

toys and has expanded into an international investigation that supplements the American Kaiser study From Zero to

Six. Currently I am analyzing data collected over the past four years on toys available and play patterns of children.

The paper presented at the Dean‟s conference with Kimberly Bezaire my GA, was the about the results. Further

dissemination is included in a chapter in a book on Early Childhood to be published in Japan in early 2007. Several

media interviews have explored this issue.

Early Childhood Teachers’ Additional Inservice and Support Across the Province (2008-present)

Asking the questions What professional development opportunities are available for Early Childhood Educators and

JK/SK Educators in Ontario? And do these opportunities support the needs of the professionals that they are aimed

toward? We are currently in the fact finding mode and developing research instruments. One GA is focusing on this

project.

Homework Realities–A National Survey 2007- 2008

The first study was entitled, Homework Realities: A Canadian Study of Parental Opinions and Attitudes. This study

was designed and conducted with Dr. Lee Bartel. It involved a web-based questionnaire and a volunteer snow-ball

sample of 1199 respondents providing information on 2063 children with all provinces in Canada represented. The

full Technical Report was released at a TDSB Quadrant consultation on February 5, with subsequent reports at

TDSB consultations on Feb 7, 11, 13, and 26.

Teacher Perspectives on Homework 2008 – 2009

As a follow-up to the Nationally publicized parental survey of homework, a second study, Teacher Perspectives on

Homework, was constructed to gather descriptive data related to homework and gather teacher perceptions, opinions,

and attitudes. A Web-based questionnaire was launched by snowball sample in March 2008. Data gathering was

facilitated by numerous school boards across Canada, by teacher‟s groups like ETFO, by posting links on websites

including the Education Association of Canada. Close to a 1000 responses were received by cut-off date in

September 2008. Partial results were released to the Toronto Star in August and further reports given at the Simcoe

District School Board consultations on Homework policy. Full results will be released in 2010.

Recordings for Children

My involvement in the production of children‟s music recordings is a natural application of my broad-ranging expertise

with toys, play, early childhood education and development. From the start, my involvement has been developing

content concepts, assuring a mix of education with entertainment (edutainment), selecting music materials, writing

lyrics (membership in SOCAN), writing all liner notes with use suggestions for parents, recording personal material,

and endorsing the recordings with personal photo in the liner notes. These recordings all have world-wide

distribution.

Scholarly Work in Progress:

Books:

Homework: A book for parents and educators responding to the many questions asked about the policies,

practices and parenting based on original research and years of experience as a teacher and parent. Having

been asked many questions about how to bring home and school together on this issue to make it work for

kids, the book is driven by reality. It will be practical yet poignant. It is Canadian in perspective. The book

has taken on a new dimension as a result o the national study of Parents‟ Reality. Co-authored with Lee

Bartel. This book is in active writing since Fall 2009.

Asking the Right Questions. A book for researchers and advisors. There is a real need for something to guide

the process for new scholars and graduate students to understand how to “ask the right questions” in research.

Lee Bartel wrote a chapter called “Trends in Data Acquisition and Knowledge Development” for the research

Page 19: DEGREE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT YEAR · Music on One Autistic Boy‟s Learning Albert Osei Defended Nov.19, 2008 PhD Beyond Words: Girls‟ Bodyself Indrani Margolin Defended Dec.12,

handbook which many have found useful. I felt that it needed to be retooled and expanded as a book.. The

combined expertise of two supervisors/researchers with many graduate students is being utilized in the

development of this already rich manuscript. We are collecting stories from students. We are about to create a

draft for presentation to a publisher. DOC talk is reviewing the material at the moment. Currently we are

collecting data internationally by means of a Survey Monkey to ascertain student‟s experiences. We have begun

interviewing professors both with vast experience with the process of supervision and those who are newly

involved in the process. We have developed a theoretical frame and are working on an instrument to determine

supervision “styles”. (With Lee Bartel)

"Whole Hearted Teaching"…this book is the soul of my work. I am currently sending perspectives out to

publishers. I have interviewed about 20 people for the book and have written four chapters to date. (on hold!

Until Sabbatical)

Face the Music: The Experience of learning and teaching music. During the past years we continued work on a

limited basis on this book concept. We expanded the extensive research already done by this year adding

literature related to artistic gymnastics. All the research projects in the various facets related to the “Face the

Music” research all provide the material. (With Lee Bartel)
