Art NewmanPresident, Board of Governors

As election time nears, all members should take the time to speak to the candidates for the Board of Governors and the Nominating Committee. You should take this opportunity to listen to their ideas and give them your views on the future governance of Delaire. This is the time for you to get to know the candidates and elect the future leaders that will affect the governance of the Club.

Delaire’s committees are the Club’s “grass root” organizations. Substantially all of the Policies, Rules and proposed By-Laws that are adopted by the Board have been recommendations from a committee. The Board and committees consist of members that volunteer their time and energy to serve our Club. We are all in this together. Immediately following the Annual Meeting on March 13, the committee sign-up sheets will be available. I hope that many of you, especially our newer members, will get involved in helping to formulate the direction of the Club.

On a personal note, it has been an honor and a privilege to have served as your President for the past two years. The challenges presented by the implementation of the Golf Facilities Enhancement Project coupled with the ongoing litigation against the Club and me have taken a toll on my personal life. Therefore, I will not be seeking a third term. I want to thank the Board of Governors, the membership and our great staff for the support during my term. I am truly humbled to have served.

As always, members of the Board of Governors are available to speak to you on any issues, ideas or concerns that you may have. We are always seeking new ways to enhance the Delaire experience.

Let’s enjoy the Club and the relationships with our fellow members.

Normally I use this forum to update the membership on subjects regarding the state of the club. However, I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to update you on a personal issue.

As most of you are aware, on January 5th I underwent surgery for cancer; the surgery was yet another step in the journey of treatment that has been ongoing since I was

diagnosed in August of 2015. I am very pleased to tell you all that the surgery and various treatments were successful, and while there is some further treatment forthcoming, the prognosis is excellent, I am currently cancer free and expected to live a full and healthy life.

While I am so grateful for the medical professionals, science, and technology, it has been the overwhelming support and care from my wife, my children, and the entire Delaire family of members and staff that has been the driving force that has kept my spirits high and my outlook positive. The genuine feeling of warmth from all of you cannot be processed through a machine, an injection, or a pill - it is the real medicine that science will never harness. I am so proud of the Delaire staff for the job they have done managing the daily operation in my absence and allowing me to return to work in a gradual manner so my recovery is successful and complete. I also thank the Board of Governors for their patience as well in allowing me the proper time to heal.

Beyond question I have been blessed in so many ways and wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all.

As you can see, the major i ty of th is issue i s d e d i c a t e d t o t h e candidates for the Board of Governors, Nominating Committee and Property Owners’ Association. I feel that it is important to learn more about each of them and how they would respond to specific questions. Taking on a leadership role in a community such as Delaire is very important... particularly because of its size and commitment to maintain it as a very special place. I would like to personally thank every candidate, regardless of the position they are seeking, for their dedication to the future of Delaire and willingness to serve. It is vital that when these individuals assume their roles that we treat them with the respect and consideration that they deserve, as I am certain they will do with all of us.

Do you remember the song...”Sunday, Monday, Tuesday...” WEDNESDAY! Yes, Wednesday evenings known as Bistro Night at Delaire were great fun! We had “Dining and Dancing” to Chezno and Will Bridges (as they rotated weekly) even before the days of the tent!!! Many of us even made two tables and just kept jumping from seat to seat to be with everyone! We all enjoyed being together...young and old, dining and dancing! Wednesdays have become quieter, with the active and popular Tuesday lite-bites. Perhaps we could try something new (and old), while still having our more intimate dining on Friday evenings. I would love to see Chezno and Will return to Delaire on Wednesday evenings. How about trying it out once a month?

Just my personal thoughts... let me know yours!

When the Marketing and Communications Committee decided to redo the Delaire.org website, we wanted to improve not only the “look and feel” of it, but also the messaging and functionality for our two user groups, non members (but potential home buyers or non equity members) and existing Delaire members.

For a variety of reasons, we decided to first improve the public facing side of the site, which would be used by people who might be looking to become members and were looking to find out more about Delaire. The first part of the new design was to create “one click” access to any page on the web site. We did this by adding “drop down” menus to the section tabs on the control bar at the top of every page, as well as by adding additional navigation tabs on the left hand side of each page.

The second, and possibly more important, improvement to the site was the addition of new pictures, full screen images and videos. In particular, we made over a dozen videos for a couple of reasons: first, to help prospective members get a much better sense of what the club members and club management are like, and second, to improve the SEO (search engine optimization) ranking of the site. Video significantly improves the SEO rank of a site, and this ranking is important, since it helps to determine which sites will come up first when someone is doing an “organic” search (i.e., when they type in a word or a couple of words in the Google search bar). When someone is looking for something like “golf clubs in Delray Beach” we would like to be near the top of the page.

These seem to have worked since we analyze a number of statistics about the site, including the number of visitors to the site, the number of pages they visit, which pages they visit, and the amount of time they spend on the site. Of course, regardless of the improvement to the website, the old axiom “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink” still applies. Ultimately, nothing can replace a visit to Delaire.

In addition to these changes, and some other marketing activities designed to attract prospective buyers, we have also added, and are continuing to add, new features to the members’ side of the site. I will try to describe some of these in upcoming articles in The Good Life, and also ask you to tell us if you have any ideas for what we can do to improve the website for either prospective members or our current members.

Fitness FactsPhil Bayne, Fitness Director

Four Ways to Learn to Love Exercise — Yes, It’s Possible!

Let’s face it: Starting a new exercise plan isn’t always easy. Or, maybe you’ve been working out for a while, but you still aren’t enjoying the process all that much. If

you’re not inspired to move, these simple tips may help you find your workout groove:

1. Find movement you enjoy doing. This one seems kind of obvious, but it still amazes me how many people think they have to punish themselves with exercise, and therefore they choose activities they absolutely abhor, like running on the treadmill. There are so many options when it comes to fitness, so experiment until you find a few that you can look forward to doing. Whether you choose to dance, cycle or swim, it’s important to derive some enjoyment during your sweat session — especially in the beginning — in order to make it a habit.

2. Take it down a notch. One of the main reasons I see people giving up on an exercise plan is that they push themselves too hard. And it’s no wonder! Who wants to keep working out when for days afterward you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck?

We’ve been conditioned to believe in the mantra of “no pain, no gain,” but the truth is that pain is your body’s way of telling you that you’re overdoing it. Sure, some muscle soreness is a normal part of the process, but there is a big difference between soreness and actual strain (or possible injury). If you dread your workouts because they leave you feeling like lying on the couch for the rest of the day, you may need to reduce the intensity of your training a bit, at least until you build more strength and stamina to handle tougher challenges.

3. Mix it up. Variety is the spice of life, so be sure to include some variables in your routine to keep it exciting! While keeping some elements consistent will be key to making progress with your plan, that doesn’t mean you can’t make things entertaining and fun during your workouts. Whether it’s a new music mix or trying out a new class at a different fitness studio, switching up your routine can help you stay motivated and excited about exercise.

4. Value quality over quantity. Many folks dislike working out because they think that a regular fitness program means six days a week at the gym. (No wonder they don’t look forward to starting a consistent plan.) Not true! In fact, doing less may actually get you more results.

One study done by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that women who exercised six days a week actually ended up burning 200 calories less per day than those who performed the same workouts two and four times a week. By the end of the four-month study, each group had experienced almost the same levels of improvement in strength and endurance, with both the twice- and four times-a-week participants burning more total calories each day than the more frequent exercisers.

The bottom line? If you spend a shorter amount of time on a focused, concentrated effort, you can cut your workout time in half and perhaps burn more calories overall in the process. Exercise shouldn’t take over your life, but it should be a regular part of it — one that you look forward to fitting in at moderate, scheduled intervals.

Experts’ advice has changed as we’ve learned more about the connection between physical activity and health.

If exercise could be packed into a pill, it would be the single most widely prescribed and beneficial medicine in the nation! Decades of research have determined that regular exercise is one of the most important factors in warding off many types of illnesses, including Type 2 diabetes and obesity. But while the benefits of the “exercise pill” have been firmly established, the exercise prescription has changed considerably over the years. “Just because recommendations change doesn’t mean that the experts are wishy-washy,” says Dr. Min Lee, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Lee notes that the f i rs t nat iona l exerc ise recommendat ions made by the Nat ional Heart Association in 1975 called for 20 minutes of rigorous exercise every day. That advice was based on studies conducted primarily on men in their 20’s. While “no pain, no gain” may have made sense for young men seeking to become more fit, it was daunting to older people who just wanted to stay healthy.

In 1995 new guidelines were issued…this time with input from physicians and public health experts. By that time it was acknowledged that any physical activity was beneficial to health and that 30 minutes of walking or other moderate activity on most days would help to lower the risk of most degenerative diseases.

The latest set of guidelines published in 2008, is a combination of the two earlier ones. It advises 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or an equivalent mix, spread out over the course of a week. These guidelines give us a lot of leeway in filling our exercise quota. The only stipulation is that each bout of exercise lasts at least 10 minutes.

The bottom line is that the current guidelines aren’t likely to be the last. We can expect future directives on light exercise and sedentary time (So many of us are sitting in front of a computer for long periods of time).

As for now you can’t go wrong following today’s exercise prescription. I will let you know as soon as new directives are published.

Steve Salzman Sid Silver

Why are you running for the Board and how do you think your experiences make you a good candidate?

Steve Salzman: I am running for a second term on the board so that I might continue with the Golf Course Enhancement project that I started two years ago. In addition, as First Vice President, I am involved in a number of board matters such as the pending litigation where I believe my input is a valuable and integral part of reaching a successful conclusion. Additionally my business and personal experiences make me a good candidate. As Chief Financial Officer of a major corporation and as your Treasurer for five years I am always cognizant of being financially responsible to all of the members. I have also been a Chief Administrative Officer, so my organizational skills are extremely helpful. I have been Treasurer of two other country clubs in Florida and New York as well a board member. I have served on a number of educational and charitable boards, rounding out my experience to serve as a member of the Delaire board.

Sid Silver: I wish to contribute my business acumen and legal background, once again, to the growth and prosperity of the Club. Having been on the board on two previous occasions, this experience will help in achieving our present and future goals. I am a dedicated and tireless worker who knows how to listen and relate to people.

Stewart Sims: I am running because I love the community and want to do everything I can to contribute to its continued growth and success. I feel that my experiences, both as a marketing executive and as a senior manager, give me a unique perspective in both understanding the needs of the membership and helping to satisfy them. Marketing is about understanding your product and your customer. Management is about creating a strategic vision and developing a plan to manage a company’s resources to achieve that vision (and, significantly, to manage personnel resources so that they buy into the plan). So, in the case of Delaire, it is not only about having a vision and a plan that the members want, but also one that the Delaire staff understands, since they will be the ones executing it (and hopefully also benefit from as well).

Mark Zucker: Barbara and I feel that Delaire is a very special place to live with a life style second to none. Over the past ten years, we have seen our community evolve into an ever changing environment. We have a state-of-the-art clubhouse and we will soon have a renovated golf course that will provide great value to our members. The reality is that change is inevitable and improvements are costly. These changes and improvements must be done in a financially prudent manner. We must balance the Club’s needs with the financial ability and reality of our community. I am a naturally conservative person who spent the majority of my professional career in banking in senior risk officer positions. I approach financial challenges with caution and skepticism. If elected, I will always protect our members with an eye toward financial prudence.

Stewart Sims Mark Zucker

What do you think are the main, current issues for Delaire?

Steve Salzman: As I see it, the main and current issues at Delaire continue to be the Golf Course Enhancement project, fiscal responsibility and the pending litigation. My extensive involvement as co-chairman of the golf course project and my involvement as chairman of the 2002 golf course renovation give me tremendous insight in what needs to be done. As your former Treasurer and with my financial background, I always have fiscal responsibility as a main goal of my fiduciary responsibility to the membership.

Sid Silver: Lack of community involvement on committees and social events at Delaire is a major issue. We also need to maintain and improve our communications and transparency as it concerns our membership.Emphasis should be placed on enhancing our overall value of the membership experience by bringing the community closer together.

Stewart Sims: I think the two most important issues facing the club are: 1. financial viability - fortunately, for a number of reasons, we are continuing to attract a significant number of new members and builders, so, despite the large bank loan for the club renovation, at least for the moment, we appear to have this issue pretty well under control. However, as with any business, we must continue to monitor our expenses while being responsive to satisfy our customers (i.e., members) by providing a high quality product that meets their needs. 2. the Golf Course Renovation - in my mind, this is a very high priority, since the golf course is one of our most important assets, and if we wish to remain competitive with other clubs in the area, we must provide a competitive golfing experience to satisfy the needs of our current members, as well as to attract new members. Unfortunately, the project has also highlighted another problem, which is how we relate to one another when there are difficult and sometimes divisive issues.

Mark Zucker: In my opinion, there are three primary issues: The first is the constant challenge of managing the Club’s annual operating budget and controlling expenditures. The Board has done a good job of controlling expenses as can be seen with three years of operating surpluses. If elected, I will maintain an attitude of financial prudence. The second issue has to do with the importance of listening to our members. We must always remember that we represent them, not ourselves. Individuals in leadership positions have the obligation to foster and maintain transparent communication with our members. If elected, I will always be accessible to listen and explain decisions made by the Board. The third issue is related to the second: as our membership continues to diversify and we respond to the interests of our newer members, we must not forget the long-term members of our community and acknowledge the importance of their priorities. If elected, I will represent all the members in our community.

A S K T H E C A N D I D A T E SHow would you try to involve more members in social activities, committees and governance?

Steve Salzman: As far as involving members in social activities, my feeling is that you must feel the pulse of the ever-changing membership and make sure that the activities are planned to fit the needs of all members. Involvement in committees and governance is an ever-challenging process that can attract the right people by making them feel that their involvement is important and recognized by the board. This has been improving over the last few years and must continue in order to keep new people on both the committees and the Board.

Sid Silver: Members of the Board as well as committee members should encourage other members to participate by joining a committee as well as becoming a Board member. The committee meetings should be open to a limited number. Encourage members to attend the committee meetings so as to see the benefits and how worthwhile it is participating in a community activity. In our Good Life we should highlight, whenever feasible, what is newsworthy as it concerns a committee activity. The very same is true for social activities. We need to be more communicative and point out the benefits to the individual as well as the community.

Stewart Sims: People join the club for different reasons and are motivated by many different factors, so I think that participating in social activities and being involved on committees and governance are two entirely different questions. As it relates to social activities, I think that Neka is doing a great job putting together a variety of programs that appeal to the general membership, as well as to smaller groups. The better these programs are, the more successful they will be. On the issue of Committee and Board involvement, I suspect that for most new members (and existing members) Committee and Board membership are not high on the list of reasons why people have joined Delaire. Therefore, I think the best we can do, is to try to build a culture that encourages participation. We can do this by (a) leading by example, (b) minimizing the divisiveness that occasionally is a byproduct of Committee and Board Membership and, most importantly, (c) recognizing and respecting the important contribution that members make when they do participate on these committees.

Mark Zucker: Leading by example is the primary way to encourage more participation in the various facets of the Club. Leaders should be involved in a variety of activities and should demonstrate enthusiasm for the services that they are undertaking on behalf of the members.

What do you see as the most important role as a Board member?

Steve Salzman: The most important role of a Board member is to listen to the members and put aside personal desires to fulfill the needs of the members.

Sid Silver: Integrity. The need to separate one’s personal beliefs/opinions and take into consideration the responsibility you have to the total membership as a whole, before arriving at a decision.

Stewart Sims: Listen to our members, be open to their ideas and try to represent their ideas and concerns as constructively as possible.

Mark Zucker: To represent the entire community and put the needs of the Club ahead of any individuals. It is important that the community feels it is being listened to, that their needs are being evaluated and given adequate consideration. Lastly, the Board must continue to provide financial conservative oversight to economic issues and act in a prudent manner. If elected, I can be counted on as this type of Board member.

A S K T H E C A N D I D A T E SWhat are your long term goals and ideas for maintaining Delaire as a premier community? Do you foresee challenges ahead?

Steve Salzman: Delaire is a premier community and in order to keep it that way we must have a long range plan taking into account how the membership will look in the near and long term future. Just as we planned for a fitness center that will meet the needs of the younger future and present members we must see what will attract the next generation. The recent survey told us what you…the members…need, want and would like to change. Now it is up to the board to listen and fill those needs. The members are what make Delaire a premier community so it is important to maintain and build on what attracted them to Delaire in the first place. The challenges ahead near term are to get the golf course redone and resolve the pending litigations. We must come together and live the happy carefree lifestyle we worked so hard to achieve.

Sid Silver: It is important that we maintain the positive track that we are running on and improve it as we go ahead. I firmly believe in fiscal conservatism and that need should always outweigh want.In the not too distant future we will have a need to renovate the Clubhouse, as it is a fact that after some 7-8 years, it has to be done. This is to update and enhance the decorative aspect.Today, we should create a fund to cover the finances which would negate the need to assess the membership when this project comes to fruition. We are in a competitive business and need to stay out front and ahead of our competitors, but do it in a fiscally responsible manner.

Stewart Sims: I think there are two. First, in order to maintain our competitive position, we need to regularly assess our strengths and weaknesses, and find new ways to differentiate ourselves from the other local clubs (in marketing this is called a SWOT analysis ...Analyzing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). I think the Long Range Planning Committee’s recent member survey was designed to do precisely this type of analysis. The second, and maybe an even more difficult problem, is how we relate to one another, particularly when trying to resolve complex issues. Inevitably, when trying to address these types of issues, there will be strong, differing opinions on the correct course of action. At these times, I think it is important that we must respect the fact that we all have the best interests of the club at heart, and not let these differences spill over in a way that affects the entire community. We must remember how fortunate we are to be living in a place like Delaire and that we are all part of the same community. In other words, I think that we need to maintain perspective and appreciate the wonderful life we share at Delaire.

Mark Zucker: Delaire is a premium club and maintaining this reputation is the greatest challenge ahead. As the membership continues to diversify and the marketplace continues to evolve, the Board must continually manage its short term and long term objectives. We are a small community and the financial burdens associated with our objectives must be managed. Maintaining quality and attractiveness must be balanced with a rational understanding of our financial resources. This is a constant and ongoing challenge, whether we are discussing a golf course improvement, new social programs or annual operating budgets; we must maintain a responsible control on costs and expenses. If elected, I promise I will do just that!

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGSSUNDAY, MARCH 13

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGSSUNDAY, MARCH 13

Please remember that your ballots must be in the Club office prior to noon on Sunday, March 13 in order for your vote to be counted. The Country Club Membership meeting will be called to order at noon so that the proxy labels can be established. Once the quorum has been established, the meeting will be adjourned to count the ballots, and then reconvened at 3:00 to conduct annual business and announce the voting results. The POA meeting will be held at 2:00. Both of these meetings will be held in the Delaire Clubhouse.

In order for your vote to be counted, you must vote for three of the four candidates for the Country Club Board, five of the six candidates for the Country Club Nominating Committee, and three of four of the candidates for the POA.

What makes you a qualified candidate for the Nominating Committee?

Marty Friedman: I am an entrepreneur and businessman. Thirty years ago I started a distribution company selling kitchen appliances in the northeast. Today, Eastern Marketing Corp. is the largest wholesale distributor of Luxury Kitchen Appliances. We sell 8 different exclusive brands in the 14 states to 600+ retailers. I am actively involved with my business and proud that our company is still operates with no bank debt. I published a book in 2014, You Can Too. It is my story about how I achieved, and encourages others to do the same. The CEO of P.C.Richard & Son, the largest independently owned retailer, said: “Marty Friedman. He’s a legend in the industry.” I accomplished business success because I was able to analyze people and choose the right people for the right jobs. I’ve been a Delaire Country Club member for 15 years, Crestmont Country Club in NJ for 38 years, and Hunters Run for 18 years. That indicates that I know what works and doesn’t work.

Joan Gray: My qualifications are numerous and broad. I have a B.A. degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology, owned and operated a party planning and coordinating company 10 years, and was a New York State licensed realtor and broker for 8 years. I am presently a Guardian Ad Litem in Palm Beach County. As a member of Cold Spring Country Club for 24 years, I served on the Women’s Board, the Golf Committee and chaired many events. As a Member of Muttontown Club for 20 years I was a member of the Woman’s Board, Golf Committee, chairman of the Babe Zaharias Tournament for the American Cancer Society, and a representative for the Met Tournament. I was also chosen to be on the nominating committee for the Men’s Board of Governors. We have lived in Delaire for 10 years, 3 of which have been full time. While here I have served on the By-Laws, Food and Beverage, Woman’s Golf, Member Guest, and Green Committees. Living at Delaire provides us with various social and recreational activities at a high level of excellence. We treasure our life here.

Bill Handwerker: I have been a member and involved in my New York Country Club Board of Governors and the respective committees on and off for almost 30 years. I am currently a member of the Admissions Committee and have been a member of the House and Entertainment Committees and served as their Chairs, on and off, for 18 years. I have been a member of the committee that helped in the planned development and implementation of a multi-million dollar renovation of the club. I served on the Board of Trustees at my Temple up north as an officer for over 8 years. I was involved in the committee to find a caterer who signed a twenty year agreement and ultimately invested millions of dollars in the facility, which helped to secure the Temple’s fiscal future.

Janet Kaplan: I have been a full time resident at Delaire for over 8 years. I regularly enjoy many of the wonderful activities we have to offer, including playing golf, cards, dining and occasionally the fitness center and the tennis courts. Over the years I have gradually become more active in the governance of our club, currently serving on the Finance and Audit committees (4 years), and the

finance representative to the Food & Beverage committee (prior 3 years). I was on the Long Range Planning Committee last year and am presently the Treasurer for the Women’s Golf League and Delaire Play for Pink Benefit. All of this has given me perspective on our community, the views of a wide variety of members, the Club’s finances, and what is most important to our members. I believe that it is my duty and my responsibility to contribute to our community. I have a BA and MBA, with specialties in math and finance. I worked at several public corporations including Ford and Zenith, was Corporate V.P at Firestone/Bridgestone and Chief Financial Officer at TSC, a start-up technology company which we took public. Thus I have significant experience in leading large and small teams of people and in recruiting, evaluating and hiring the right people for challenging positions. On the more personal side, I take my responsibilities and commitments very seriously. I am in my 18th year of volunteering once or twice a week with Habitat for Humanity. I am organized, thoughtful, prepared and logical in my approach to most matters and meetings. I work well within a team, listen to and am respectful of other views, and am practical in my decisions to ensure that positive progress is attained.

Bart Lewis: I believe my education, work and social services background has provided me with an ability to look at situations from many different perspectives and make decisions taking into consideration all possible outcomes. I believe this background also affords me the ability to see these qualifications in other people as well.

I have an accounting degree from the University of Illinois and a JD degree with honors from Detroit College of Law. I worked at National Bank of Detroit in the commercial loan department while attending law school at night. I am senior and managing partner of a 30+ attorney law firm that started with two partners after graduation, where my specialty was real estate. Due to the ill health of my father-in-law and in addition to my law practice, I ran a manufacturing company with over 100 employees until it was sold in 1987. I have worked for and have sat and continue to sit on the Boards of several charitable organizations in Michigan including the Dorothy and Peter Brown Adult Day Care Center, Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network, and Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit. I have also served on several boards in business and on the Board of Directors of my country club in Michigan. At Delaire I have served on the Membership Committee.

Judy Tarter: I have been a family member of Delaire for over 35 years. I have watched it grow and change into the wonderful world and hidden gem that it is today. I have chaired the Play for Pink Card Party and its Wall of Honor fundraiser since its inception at Delaire. I have served on the Marketing and Communications Committee. My experience as a top producer in real estate in New York with Houlihan Lawrence has helped me understand the important value of your personal home and your country club investment. As a former member of Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, NY for over 43 years I served on the Nominating Committee, the Board of Governors, the Charity Committee and the House and Entertainment Committee. My past experience in private country club life has taught me the importance of the right candidates being chosen for the Board of Governors in continuing on the best path for the membership and the club’s future.

Knowing that it is often challenging to get people to run for the Board of Governors or Nominating Committee, what are your thoughts for recruiting/convincing more people to submit their names for consideration?

Marty Friedman: I accomplished business success because I was able to analyze people and choose the right people for the jobs. I plan to do the same for Delaire. That is what is needed here, and that is the right job for me because that is what I have been doing my whole life, and in my business I am still doing that.

Joan Gray: I can only give you the answer as it applied to me. A friend that I respect and admire requested that I submit my name for consideration on the Nominating Committee. He is a man who has given many hours of service to Delaire and I felt uncomfortable refusing him. I’m sure that I wasn’t the first woman that he asked. Probably not the second or third person either but I felt that he deserved a “yes” because he had served on the Board and really cared about the future of Delaire and wanted qualified members to continue to govern. I wanted that too, and I felt that being on the Nominating Committee was a way to get that done.

Bill Handwerker: The past couple of years of controversy concerning the golf course project will make any solicitation to lead our community difficult. However, I am confident that we can overcome the recent past. My wife Amy’s parents, Jay and Beth Thalheim, were residents of the Delaire community from 1987-2001. Those days were wonderful for them with the atmosphere that was present during their residency which made their time at Delaire truly enjoyable. Amy and I established our home here in 2007 and still felt the same camaraderie as Jay and Beth did during their time here. We both believe that we need to re-establish the feeling for all of us here to live “The Good Life” and get past what has transpired and understand the great opportunities we have to live here at Delaire.

Janet Kaplan: I believe that the Nominating Committee is the most important committee we have. It sets the tone for 2 years on the Board of Governors, directly through its selection of nominees in the first year and secondarily though its selection of Nominating Committee candidates for the following year. The Committee must complement the continuing Board member strengths by identifying and nominating the best candidates that bring insights, skills and experiences needed to create a well-rounded and representative Board. By sharing with these prospective candidates how unique and critical their contributions will be to our Delaire community, I believe we will be able to convince them to serve.

Bart Lewis: Other than being a member of the Board of Governors, I believe the most important job is helping to select and elect the most qualified members to our Board, members who not only take into consideration the current needs of all of our members but balance that with what has to be done while insuring and maintaining the high quality of our club for ourselves, our children and future generations. Recruiting and convincing qualified people to run is indeed difficult. Every club has this problem as it is typically a thankless job. I wish I knew the answer, but the only thing one can do is try to recognize the best people possible and tell them how important their contribution to the club would mean to its continued success.

Judy Tarter: Everyone cares about Delaire and maintaining its premiere status. We must ask those members to help ensure this priority status by participating and becoming a candidate who steps up and is willing to work as a member of the Nominating Committee or Board of Governors.

What do you perceive as the most important role of the POA and what are the most challenging issues that you will face is fulfilling that role?

Bernard Dayan: I believe it is to do what is right for the residents of the community. It is a very daunting role, since every homeowner has an opinion of what is good or bad for the community. I will listen to all residents and do what is right for the majority.

Robert Lidz: Delaire enjoys an enviable reputation as a small community with outstanding facilities. It makes sense to me that maintaining and improving the public property in Delaire in importance to that of the Board of Governors. This is our second year here, so stating the most challenging issues in fulfilling the role outlined above would be presumptuous. If elected, I will listen and learn before declaring what must be done.

Pete Ormond: I think the most important role of the POA is to insure that property values are preserved and enhanced by providing a consistent residential experience through a uniform, fair and reasonable application of the POA bylaws and regulations. I believe the most challenging issue is the residents who think the regulations don’t apply to them.

Cathy Cutler-Salzman: The most challenging thing is to make our members understand that we are one community and every decision we make is in the best interest of everyone.

A S K O U R P O A C A N D I D A T E S

Why are you running for the POA?

Bernard Dayan: I enjoy living here in Delaire and feel that I need to be on the POA to add new life to the board and bring fresh ideas so that we maintain a Platinum level country club…not just with the golf course, but as an entire community. I also believe that the infrastructure needs updating.

Robert Lidz: I feel it is important to contribute to any organization to which I belong and the POA is no exception. Delaire is a special place so that preserving and enhancing our property is an essential that seems often to be taken for granted.

Pete Ormond: To enhance the quality of life experience and the value proposition for all Delaire residents.

Cathy Cutler-Salzman: Good question. I care for this community. We are not the sleepy little Delaire anymore. We have so many new people that it is like Delaire has been reborn. I want to keep the small community feeling that defines us.

What do you think best qualifies you to serve on the POA?

Bernard Dayan: Not only do I have prior experience working with a POA, but I developed that POA and wrote the by-laws for it, while I was developing a 19-lot luxury sub-division in Lake Placid, NY. I can also bring to the board my experience and education in architecture and land development, but I also have 20 years experience as firefighter/EMT in my community in New York, serving and protecting the citizens. Ten of those years I spent as a commissioner and Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, dealing in safety of the town and having a fiduciary responsibility to the public to provide the best fire and rescue with the least amount of tax burden to its citizens.

Robert Lidz: I started my own company which I ran for 26 years. This gave me an excellent perspective on leadership and teamwork. Additionally, I served as President of the office co-op where our business was domiciled and currently serve as Treasurer of the NYC co-op in which we live 3 months each year. Finally, I am a trained mediator which allows me to bring calm to difficult issues and help others solve problems.

Pete Ormond: Common sense and a rational approach to dealing with issues.

Cathy Cutler-Salzman: What qualifies me is that I am here 12 months a year, I have been on the POA for two terms and I care about the responsibilities of the POA. We are in the middle of some very important issues and I feel that I should be there to complete them.

CAT UPDATEGood news and many thanks to Connie Friedman, Rochelle Danhi, Dana Plagens, Cathy Cutler-Salzman and Barbara Zucker... our cat advocates... for a job well done in trapping, neutering, spaying and caring for 30 cats in Delaire. Some things that you should be aware of:

1. A Palm Beach County ordinance approved in the summer of 2015 prohibits the removal of a cat from its community.

2. If you notice a cat on your property in a trap, please call Connie at 828-275-7192 immediately. It is important that animals not be left unattended in traps for any significant amount of time.

3. If hired gardeners or other landscape workers use traps, please urge them to treat trapped animals as humanely and responsible as possible.

4. If you see a cat or a kitten around your yard, please contact Connie with your address so she can check to see if the cat has had the care that is needed.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Gayle and Steve were recently honored by ADL and Israel Bonds for their commitment to Israel and Jewish traditions. They wanted to share with Delaire how wonderful it is to keep these traditions alive through these important and causes that will help our children and grandchildren carry out what their parents and grandparents and those before them worked hard to bring to us - “a peaceful world for all of the next generations”.

Delaire is proud and fortunate to have Gayle and Steven as part of the Delaire family. Their dedication to Jewish studies for adults and children, their involvement in their temple and their concern for ensuring their Jewish legacy through quiet donations and personal involvement is so that the past is never forgotten and the future will be protected for our community and the worldwide community.

Ball Moves....Windy Day

Golf RulesAlan Tarter, FSGA Certified Rules Official

In each incident the player’s ball is on the putting green on a windy day with wind gusts that could move a ball that is at rest.

1. Player A carefully grounds his club about 2 inches behind the ball. As Player A looks as the line of putt, the ball rolls toward the hole. Player A plays the ball from its new location.

**Player A had not addressed his ball, nor did any of his actions cause the ball to move. No penalties, and Player A proceeded correctly.

2. As Player B leans over to mark his ball, Player B accidentally drops his putter on his ball. The ball moves several inches toward the hole. After cleaning his ball, Player B replaces the ball on its original location.

**Player B moved his ball in play, a one-stroke penalty.Player B replaced the ball as required.

3. Player C, in marking the position of his ball, accidentally touches the ball with his coin causing his ball to move about 12 inches toward the hole. Player C plays the ball from its new location.

**Player C was not penalized for moving his ball but incurred the general penalty ( 2 strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play) for not replacing the ball.

4. Player D, in marking the position of his ball, accidentally touches the ball with his coin causing his ball to move about 12 inches toward the hole. Player D picks up his ball and places it as near as possible to its original location. Player D completes the hole.

**Player D proceeded correctly.

5. Player E, in marking the position of his ball, accidentally touches the ball with his coin causing his ball to move about 12 inches toward the hole. Player E picks up his ball and, not knowing the exact spot, drops the ball as near as possible to where it originally lay. Player E completes the hole.

**Player E was not penalized for moving his ball in play. However, the rule required the ball to be replaced by placing on the putting green. Player E incurred the general penalty for dropping his ball instead of placing it. (2 strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play).

6. Player F marks his ball with a coin. Prior to lifting the ball, a gust of wind blows the ball several feet towards the hole. Player F picks up the ball and replaces the ball where it was marked by the coin. Player F completes the hole.

**Player F’s ball in play was moved by the wind and was properly in play at its new location. When Player F lifted his ball and did not replace it on the new location prior to his next stroke Player F incurred a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play or a loss of hole penalty in match play.

7. Player G marks his ball with a coin and lifts the ball. Player G replaces the ball and does not pick up the coin. A gust of wind blows the ball into the hole. Player G celebrates and proceeds to play the next hole.

**Player G proceeded correctly.

Conclusions: If you cause your ball to move, you incur a 1 stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced. If the movement of the ball is “directly attributable” to the process of marking, there is no penalty. If you don’t cause your ball to move and it moves because of the wind, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new location.

I can’t believe it is already February, half-way through the season but with much more to come. We have finished our Delaire Cup with Marcy Spector and Pam Kirshenbaum being the winners. Congratulations to you both. Mother Nature did not cooperate with our Ladies Member Guest, but Joy Fedelim and Cindy Friedlander still managed to give us a special day and show everyone invited how great Delaire Country Club really is.

Dana Plagens and her committee worked very hard on our Play for Pink held on February 26th. Thank you for supporting this very special charity.

Bracketolgy is turning out to be a very interesting tournament. Please get your matches in, in the proper times so we can celebrate with the winners. In March, we have the very popular Ryder Cup and Club Championships. Keep hitting that ball long and straight, and enjoy the wonderful programs we have put together for all.

The unseasonal weather the day of the Ladies’ Member Guest did not deter the fabulous co-chairs, Joy Fedelim and Cindy Friedlander from providing a fabulous event for attendees. With the expert cooperation of Delaire staff (always ready to jump right in) and Joy and Cindy’s dedication and determination, the schedule was quickly adjusted. With a bountiful and delicious menu served in a Tiffany-inspired room, and everyone receiving a beautiful gift…guests were more than satisfied with the result. Add to that an afternoon of a spontaneous card party complete with more desserts, it was a full day of fun. And just in case the guests thought they were missing out on golf…a complimentary round of golf was the extra bonus they received.

Kudos to Joy and Cindy for their extraordinary efforts in making this a wonderful experience for everyone who participated.

Working behind the scenes to help make Delaire what it is, are the 14 talented, dedicated and loyal members of the kitchen staff assembled over the years by Chef Glenn. We see some of them out front at the carving station, at the daily special station, making waffles or pancakes at the Sunday Buffett, or at Light Bites while others, who we seldom see, are in the kitchen preparing salads, sushi, cold fish and vegetables, making pastry or “on the line,” while still others toil away washing the pots, pans, dishes and utensils that the all of us use every day. They are all part of a team, each dependent on the other, and they all work incredibly long hours to make our dining experience so exceptional.

In this limited space, it would be impossible to tell even a little about each one of them, so, chosen by lots, in this article, we are highlighting Brandon Ferrara. (Appropriately, Brandon is not in the group picture, because he was busy preparing pancakes at the “lunch special station” when we took the picture.)

Brandon, who is one of Chef Glenn’s most recent hires, only starting at Delaire in August. However he has been cooking since he was 2, when he starting rolling meatballs at his grandmother’s house. Raised in Lake Worth, and part of a large Italian family, he would go every Sunday

to his grandmother’s house for dinner. Even though his grandmother did much of the cooking, Brandon’s mother spent most of the day preparing the sauces for the dishes and teaching Brandon the fundamentals of Italian cooking. By the time he was 14 Brandon was already working as a cook in a friend’s restaurant, and in 2011 he graduated from the Florida Culinary Institute.

Prior to coming to Delaire, Brandon was a cook at a number of restaurants in South Florida, most recently at the Stonewood Grill in Wellington. Today, Brendon feels he has found a mentor in Chef Glenn who, in addition to helping him develop his culinary skills, leads by example and is teaching him what it is to be a chef and a team leader. Working 6 days a week does not give him much free time, but when he can, Brandon loves to play hockey, go to an occasional Panther game, eat for sushi (his favorite food), or just relax in hot tub with a beer. So “here’s to you Brandon” and thank you to all the kitchen staff for what you do for all of us.

BRAGGING RIGHTSBRAGGING RIGHTSNicholas Andreozzi, grandson of Lisa and Tony, was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Football for the state of Rhode Island, 2015-2016. Along with this he was honored by the City Council of East Greenwich, RI as Player of the Year in that he is the only football player from his town to ever win this award. He is a Senior Quarterback for East Greenwich High School in RI, the Avengers. He led his team to the State Super Bowl win (first win in 10 years) and was named the game’s MVP. He set school records in season and career-passing yards and touchdown passes.

On February 3rd he was honored at the State House of Representatives, Rhode Island, for his achievements. This was a huge honor.

What makes all of this such a big deal to Lisa and Tony, and others, is that he is only 5’7” and 145 lbs. He had to defy all odds and those who said he couldn’t make it. That’s why all the articles written about him say it’s not the size that matters, but the heart! So true!

He will be playing college football at the University of Rhode Island. Way to go Nick!!
