An Obstinate Juror—Alternate ridi­cule and obloquy have long been the uncom­fortable portion of that one juryman of the else unanimous twelve who inexorably re­fuses to agree with his exasperated associ Etes on a verdict; but there have been cases in which his seeming perversity has proved ultimately to be the salvation of justice; and a venerable English Judge, recently deceas ed, was wont to cite one instance in his err* lier judicial experience when such perversity led to an astounding discovery of mistaken truth.

A man wa9 tried before this judge in the Court of Common Pleas for the murder of a neighboring landlord, with whom he was known to have been on bitter unfriendly tenus, protested actually with prayers and tears that he was wholly innocent of the dreadful crime, though acknowledging his enmity to the dead man on account of some disputed boundary between their properties, and that the clothing he wore and afterward concealed on the day of the tragedy, was stained with human blood. As he earnestly told and reiterated his story—he was taking a morning walk, as customary, across the fields of a certain farm, when he stumbled upon the body of a man, who was lying dead amongst some corn, with two deep wounds

The late foreman exacted a pledge of secrecy to lust during his own lifetime, and then caluilv told why he had labored so inflexibly for the accused man’s life. Un the morning of the murder of the man doomed to be killed, was the tithing man of the pai isli called eurly to collect tithes on tho speaker’s corn, and was arbitrary and violent iu his manner as provoke indignunt remonstances. Becom­ing enraged, tho tithe gatherer assaulted the other with a pitchfork which he w iug, and which belonged to a neighbor, and iu defense of bis life the assailed ted the weapou away, aud in so doing inflic­ted wounds of which the aggressor fell dead on his way home !

So the actual slayer was the coming fore­man of the jury—a position lie secured lor himself at great paius aud expense, that he might save an innocent man troiu dreadful punishment lor a crime whioh lie hiui-self committed in self-defence.
