Choose the path that’s right for you and your future, including a 4-year college degree, a 2-year college degree, trade school, apprenticeship, military, or certificate program. Start preparing.

Talk to your counselor or advisor: Talk about different opportunities. Many paths lead to similar careers. You could earn a certificate, complete an apprenticeship or earn an associate or bachelor’s degree. Investigate what each one may cost and what salary you can earn with different credentials.

Ask your counselor about fee waivers for college applications and SAT/ACT tests: Your parent/guardian can authorize your school to use your USDA Free and Reduced-Price Meals status for SAT/ACT and college application fee waivers. Not sure if you qualify? Check with your school.

Organize program requirements: List all application deadlines, including testing and financial aid requirements, for each program that interests you. Use a checklist to stay organized: delawarestudentsuccess.org/cam-students

Request letters of recommendation: Reach out to your contacts and send them a list of your accomplishments to include in the letter.

Write your application essay: Draft your essays and request feedback from parents, teachers, or other trusted adults. Apply to Delaware colleges for free: All Delaware colleges are waiving application fees from mid-October to the end of November. Attend special events at your school to learn more about college and fill out applications during your school’s College Application Week.

Info: Maximize Your Chances of Receiving ScholarshipsBegin searching for scholarships as early as possible

• Don’t wait until January of your senior year to start looking.• Pay attention to scholarship deadlines and keep a checklist of

application closing dates.• File your FAFSA early. Many scholarships require it. FAFSA opens

Oct. 1.• Don’t submit at the application deadline to guard against

computer or other technical issues.

Plan for letters of recommendation• Choose your recommender carefully. It should be someone who

knows you well and can speak to your accomplishments.• Give them plenty of time and include a student bio or resume

outlining your accomplishments and activities. • The best letters of recommendation show the student’s

personality and character.

Apply for local scholarships• Many communities offer scholarships through clubs, organizations or

small businesses.• The chances of winning a local scholarship may be greater because

they are open to a smaller group of students.• Check with your school counselor for scholarships tied to your school

and community.• Ask relatives if they know of scholarships through their employers,

clubs and organizations.

Apply for scholarships with smaller amounts• Don’t overlook smaller scholarships. Several $500 scholarships

can add up.

• Larger scholarships can be the most competitive.

• The amount of scholarships you can apply to or win is unlimited.

Don’t avoid scholarships that require an essay• Some students avoid scholarships that require more work. That

could shrink the application pool and improve your chances of winning.

• If you have two to four really good scholarship essays, edit and reuse those essays for multiple scholarship applications.

• Edit the essay for each new scholarship essay question.

Write a winning scholarship essay• Follow the essay word limit. Exceeding that might disqualify you.

• Proofread the essay to ensure you have no spelling or grammar mistakes.

• Answer any questions in the essay prompt.

• Find a unique perspective on the essay prompt and make your essay stand out. Be personal and passionate.

Apply for many scholarships and stay organized

• Apply for 20 to 30 or more scholarships.

• Treat applying like a part-time job. It’s an investment in your future.

• Set aside regular times to look for and apply to scholarships, once a week, an hour each day, whatever works best for your schedule.

• Stay organized. Use a calendar and a checklist. Know the scholarship deadlines.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t win right away• Not everyone is guaranteed to win a scholarship.

• The more you apply for, the better your chances of winning a scholarship.

• Keep searching for scholarships.

• Apply for scholarships in different categories that you may qualify for, such as merit, athletic or artistic.

Beware of scholarship scams• Requests for personal information: A legitimate scholarship will

never ask for personal information such as a social security number.

• Fees: A true scholarship will not charge a fee to submit an application.

• Guarantees to win: A legitimate scholarship will not guarantee that you will win. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

• Application is missing sponsor information: You should always be able to find a sponsor’s contact information in the application. If you can’t find that information, be wary.

Academic Common Market Regional tuition-savings agreement

The Academic Common Market (ACM) is a tuition-savings agreement between 15 Southern states that are members of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). If your degree program is not offered at a public college in Delaware, you may be eligible for in-state tuition at a public college that participates in the ACM. To be eligible for the ACM, you must be:

1. A Delaware resident whose degree program is not offered at Delaware State University or University of Delaware

2. Accepted into an eligible baccalaureate or graduate-level degree program selected for the ACM by a participating college. Note: The ACM does not include first professional degree programs, such as pharmacy, medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry, theology or law.

The 15 participating states are:AlabamaArkansasDelawareFlorida (graduate-level programs only)GeorgiaKentuckyLouisianaMarylandMississippiOklahomaSouth CarolinaTennesseeTexas (graduate-level programs only)VirginiaWest Virginia

Programs offered in the ACM are selected by the participating public colleges and are subject to change. States and colleges may also set restrictions on ACM participation, such as undergraduate or graduate-only enrollment; full-time enrollment; or the completion of specific coursework to enter the degree program.

You can submit your ACM application to the Delaware Higher Education Office (DHEO) after you have been accepted into an eligible degree program. If you remain continuously enrolled in the same program at the same school, make satisfactory academic progress and retain your Delaware residency, you do not have to reapply each year. Institutional requirements to retain ACM status may include full-time enrollment and maintaining a minimum GPA.

Contact DHEO if you have any questions or if your program is not offered in the ACM. The participating institutions will sometimes add a program upon request. To learn about eligible programs for Delaware residents, ACM deadlines, or to download an application, visit www.delawarestudentsuccess.org/acm.

Undocumented StudentsScholarships often require students to be either a U.S. citizen or aneligible non-citizen. For students who don’t meet this criteria, finding money to pay for college can be more challenging. If you are unsure ofyour citizenship status or do not meet one of these criteria, below areresources that will help you to find money to pay for your collegeexpenses. College is not out of the question for you if you use these resources. Also, be sure to check out our website: www.delawarestudentsuccess.org as we continue to add additional informationthroughout the year.

Step 1: Review the Compendium for scholarships that do not requirecitizenship. Many scholarships will tell you in the description if theyrequire citizenship.

Step 2: Choose your top 1 or 2 schools and contact the financial aid \office. Let them know that you are not eligible for federal aid and will need assistance in applying for financial aid. Several colleges includingUniversity of Delaware, Delaware Tech and Delaware State havefinancial aid officers assigned to help students through this process.Often private schools also have financial aid officers available to assistyou. Contact them as early as possible so that you can complete theprocess and get as much funding as possible.

Step 3: Consider state scholarships such as the Student Excellence Equals Degree (SEED) (see page 43) and Inspire (see page 33). SEEDcovers full tuition at Delaware Tech and Inspire provides at least$3,900 a year at Delaware State University. Undocumentedstudents are eligible to apply for the SEED scholarship at DelawareTechnical and Community College and must meet the sameeligibility requirements as documented students. To qualify as anundocumented scholarship recipient, the student must have:

• Attended a high school located within the State of Delaware for two or more years

• Graduated from a Delaware high school• Applied for all campus-based financial aid (scholarships, etc.)

for which s/he would be eligible• Submit a notarized Tuition Affidavit (available in Delaware

Tech’s Financial Aid Office) which certifies that the student is an undocumented person and that s/he has filed an application to legalize his/her immigration status or will file an application to legalize his/her application status as soon as s/he is eligible.

Step 4: Consider other scholarship resources, such as The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund, which compiled a long list of scholarships for you to consider: www.maldef.org

Please visit the undocumented student section of the Delaware Higher Education Office website at for more information and resources.

Avoiding Scams Financial aid scammers want your money. Be aware of the tactics companies use to persuade students to buy their services. Students are hearing these claims:

“If you use our services, you’re guaranteed to get at least $5,500 in student aid for college, or we’ll give you your money back.” This claim doesn’t mean anything. Most students are eligible for at least $5,500 in unsubsidized student loans – and because a student loan is considered student aid, you won’t be able to ask for a refund if that’s all you’re offered. Remember that refund guarantees often have conditions. Get refund policies in writing.

“Applying for aid is complicated. We’re the only ones who can help you through the process and find all the aid for which you’re eligible.” Unlikely. Many places offer free help to apply for student aid. Check with your school counselor or college financial aid office for help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your school or college can also help you find scholarships.

“I’d like to offer you a scholarship or grant. All I need is your bank account information so the money can be deposited and a processing fee charged.” Watch out!

It’s extremely rare for a legitimate organization to charge a processing fee for a scholarship. Criminals imitate legitimate foundations, federal agencies and corporations. They might even have official-sounding names to fool students. Don’t give anyone your bank account or credit card information or your Social Security Number unless you initiated the contact and trust the company.

What is Registered Apprenticeship?

Registered Apprenticeship is an employer-driven, “earn while you learn” model that combines on-the-job training with a job-related classroom or lab instruction. Registered Apprentices are sponsored by their employer and therefore typically work during the day and attend school at night.

Registered Apprenticeship is a proven approach for preparing workers from age 16+ for jobs while meeting the needs of business for a highly-skilled workforce.

Once workers complete their apprenticeship program, they are on their way to a successful long-term career with a competitive salary and little or no educational debt.

Every graduate of an apprenticeship program receives a nationally-recognized, portable credential that signifies that apprentices are fully qualified for the job, and which is accepted by industries and employers across the U.S.

In Delaware there are:• Around 1,400 Registered Apprentices (RA)• Around 350 employer sponsors with at least one RA
