MONSTER GAMES BY GRAY & MAY LEAD HORNETS PAST EAGLES IN REG. SEASON FINALE

Baltimore, Md. (Mar. 5, 2015) --- Kendall Gray had career-highs of 33 points and 30 rebounds; and Amere May poured in 40 points to lead Delaware State to a 104-92 MEAC men’s basketball win over Coppin State in the regular season finale for both teams Gray’s performance marked the first time in Delaware State’s Div. I era that a player has reached 30 points and 30 rebounds in a game. His rebound total is also tops among all NCAA Div. I players this season. The previous Div. I high this year was 28 by Rico Gathers of Baylor. He’s also the only player in Div. I to reach the 30-30 plateau this season. Gray is the 11th NCAA Div. I player since 1973 to rec-ord 30 rebounds in a game. The last to achieve the feat was Rashad Jones-Jennings of Arkansas-Little Rock on Dec. 5, 2005,according to the2014-15 NCAA Men’s Basketball Record Book. The most rebounds in a game by a Div. 1 player since 1973 is 35 by Larry Abney of Fresno State on Feb. 17, 2000. Gray also set a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Div. I single-game rebound rec-ord; and became the first player in league history with 30 points and 30 rebounds in a game. He also set a Hornet Div. I single-game rebound record. Delaware State’s single-game rebound high is 35 by Marvin Spratley when the Hornets were a Division II program in 1971. In addition, Gray blocked three shots to set a single season school record for the third straight year. He has 83 blocks this year, eclipsing the previous high of 81 he set last season. Gray was 12-for-13 from the field and nine-of-16 at the free throw line in the contest. His rebound total included a career-high 11 offensive boards. Gray also had 23 and 22-rebound games; and ranks among the nation’s leaders with 17 double-doubles this season. He raised his season rebound average to a nation’s-best 12.4 per game with the performance. Gray’s big night nearly overshadowed a 40-point scoring performance by Amere May. It was his second 40-point game of the season. He scored the NCAA Div. I season high of 48 vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 17. GRAY IS MEAC PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR & TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYER

Amere May Also Named to All-MEAC First Team Delaware State University center Kendall Gray is the second player in the 44-year history of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to earn the league’s Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year awards in the same season. Gray also headlines the 2014-15 All-MEAC First Team, which includes Hornet teammate Amere May. Gray joins Norfolk State University’s Kyle O’Quinn as the only players in MEAC history to garner both Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors in the same season. O’Quinn accomplished the feat during the 2011-12 season. He’s also the third Hornet to be named MEAC Player-of-the-Year, joining Tom Davis in 1989; and Jahsha Bluntt, who was selected in 2006 and ’07. Gray is the first DSU player to receive the top defender award. Gray has dominated the MEAC’s weekly awards this season, earning eight Defensive Player-of-the Week honors and one Player-of-the-Week recognition. On Jan. 19, he was selected as the Lou Henson National Mid-major Player-of-the-Week. Delaware State wrapped up its 2014-15 regular season with Gray leading all NCAA Division I players in rebounds per game (12.4), total rebounds (371) and defensive rebounds (8.8 pg). He’s also the MEAC leader in blocks per game (2.8), total blocks (83), offensive rebounds (3.5 pg); and double-doubles (17). As of March 6, Gray ranked seventh in the nation in double-doubles, 15th in total blocks, 17th in blocks per game and 19th in double-doubles. On March 5, he earned national recognition after recording career highs of 33 points and 30 rebounds in the Hornet’ 104-92 win over Coppin State, becoming the first player in the Division I history of Delaware State and the MEAC to pull down 30 rebounds in a game. It also marked the first time in recent memory that any Division I player reached 30 points and 30 rebounds in a game. The last time a Division I player collected 30 rebounds in a game before Gray was in 2000. In addition to the nation’s-best 30-rebound game, Gray shares the fourth (23) and fifth-best (22) single-game rebound totals this season. He also set a DSU blocks record (83) for the third time in his career this season. May is No. 1 in the MEAC and sixth in the nation in scoring at 20.9 points per game this season. He has topped the 40-point mark in two games this season, including the Div. I high of 48 vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 17. May tallied 40 points at Coppin State on Mar. 5. He has scored at least 30 points in five games, including 32 in the Hornets’ 72-65 upset of Wake Forest on Nov. 28. May enters next week’s MEAC Tournament having reached double-figures in scoring in 21 straight games, topping the 20-point mark in the last eight. He has also hit at least one three-point field goal in the last 24 games. May is second in the MEAC in three-point field goals (2.8 pg) and three-point percentage (.394); and fourth in the league in free throw shooting (.824).

IUP was ranked number one in the NCAA Division II poll dur-ing parts of three seasons while Walker was on the staff. Before entering the coaching ranks, he enjoyed a playing career that included a brief stint with the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers during the 1985-86 season. Prior to reaching the NBA, Walker played a total of seven years with various European and U.S. professional basketball leagues. As a collegiate player at Clemson University, he helped lead the Tigers to a 23-9 overall record and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 1979-80 season. He was a team-mate of former NBA All-Star Larry Nance. During the 2013-14 season, Hornet junior center Kendall Gray set a team record with 81 blocks. Gray was named to the 2014 All-MEAC Second Team. During the 2011-12 season, Walker’s work with the Hornet big men was instrumental in the team's school-record 192 blocks, shattering the record previously held by the 1989-90 squad. Dela-ware State was tops in the MEAC and fifth among all NCAA Divi-sion I teams at 6.6 blocks per game during the 2011-12 campaign. In addition, DSU power forward Marques Oliver moved into first place on the team's list for career blocks that season. Oliver fin-ished his career with 222 blocks. DELAWARE STATE 2014-15 MEN’S BASKETBALL NOTES

GRAY IS NATION’S BEST REBOUNDER; AMONG TOP BLOCKERS

Kendall Gray’s 12-rebound performance in the Hornets’ MEAC Tournament opening round win against Savannah State on Monday solidified his place atop the nations rebounding leader board. Gray is No. 1 among all NCAA Divi-sion players in rebounding at 12.4 per game. He also leads the nation in defensive rebounds at 8.9 per contest. Gray’s career-high 30-rebound game at Coppin State on Mar. 5 is also tops among all Div. I players this season, giving Gray three of the top nine single-game rebound totals in the country. He had 23 rebounds in the Hornets’ 60-49 win over South Carolina State on Jan. 17; and grabbed 22 boards vs. Morgan State on Jan. 10. He has reached double figures in rebounds in 21 of his 30 games this season. Gray is tops in the MEAC in seven statistical categories, ranking in the top 21 among all Div. I players in each. He is ninth in the nation in double-doubles (17), 15th in blocks per game (2.8) and 12th in total blocks (87). On Jan. 19, Gray earned national recognition for his stellar play. He was selected as the Lou Henson Award National Mid-Major Player-of-the-Week; and Press-Box-to-Press Row HBCU Player of the Week after recording 41 rebounds, 30 points,

five blocks and six assists in a 2-0 week for the Hornets. Gray was also tabbed as the MEAC ‘s Player-of-the-Week AND Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the games. The Dover, Del., native was two blocks away from school history in the Hornets’ 72-65 win at Wake Forest on Nov. 28. Gray scored 14 points (6-8 FGs), grabbed 16 rebounds and tied the school record for a third time with eight blocks in the

contest, falling just short of the first “triple-double” in recorded team history. Gray had five blocks at Arkansas on Nov. 21 to surpass Marques Oliver (2009-13) as the Hornets’ all-time blocks leader. He has since raised his school record total to 278.

He also had a school record-tying eight blocks vs. NCA&T on Jan. 20, 2014; vs. Wagner on Nov. 14, 2012; and vs. UMES on Feb. 28 of this season. Gray has again set a Hornet record with 87 blocks this season. He held the previous record of 81 as a junior last season; and first set the mark with 75 as a sopho-more during the 2012-13 campaign. Gray has been more than a defensive presence for the

Hornets this season. He’s averaging a career-high 12.3 points per game this season, highlighted by a career-best 33 points in the regular season a Coppin State on Mar. 5. In addition, he’s at shooting 56.0% clip (fourth in MEAC) and has reached double-figures in scoring in 20 of his 31 games played this season. BELL ON THE VERGE OF 200 3-PT FIELD GOALS

Delaware State forward Tyshawn Bell (sr.) hit two three-pointers in Monday’s MEAC Tournament opening round win over Savannah State to move closer to becoming the third player in team history with 200 career treys. He currently stands at 197. He is sixth in the MEAC with 63 three-pointers and 11th in 3pt FGs per game at 2.0. Bell joined the Hornets’ 1000-point club during his team-high 13-point performance against North Carolina Central on Jan. 26. He’s now at 1161 career points to rank 13th on the team’s all-time list. The Dover, Del., native was named MEAC Player-of-the-Week on Feb. 16 after scoring 42 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in two games, highlight-ed by his second career double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds, each a career-high, vs. Florida A&M. Bell had a career-high five three-pointers in three games this season (Arkansas, Florida A&M, UMES). As a junior in 2013-14, Bell ranked among the MEAC leaders with a .345 three-point percentage (41-for-119); and was second in the league in free throw shooting at 86.2% (75-for-87). Bell had a career-high five three-pointers (5-7) vs. Arkansas on Nov. 21; and hit four threes in the previous contest at North Texas (4-5).

As a junior in 2013-14, Bell ranked among the MEAC leaders with a .345 three-point percent-age (41-for-119); and

was second in the league in free throw shooting at 86.2% (75-for-87). He was also second on the Hornets in scoring with a career-best 12.1 point per-game average last season. As a freshman during the 2011-12 season, Bell was a MEAC All-Rookie selection. He was fifth on the Hornets in scoring (7.2 ppg) and second in three-point field goals (43). Bell ranked fourth in the MEAC in three-point percentage (.387 ... 43-for-111) and knocked down at least one three-pointer in 22 of DSU's 30 contests during his rookie sea-son.

AMERE MAY COMES FULL CIRCLE WITH HORNETS

Amere May has stretched his MEAC scoring lead after his 26-point performance in the Hornets’ 64-58 win over Savannah in Monday’s MEAC Tournament opening round game. May is tops in the league at 21.1 points per game, sixth among all NCAA Division I players this season. He is averaging 29.6 points in the last seven games, highlighted by a 40-point outburst in the regular season finale at Coppin State on Mar. 5. May has scored 30-or-more points in five games this season. He stepped into the national spotlight with his ca-reer-best 48-point performance in the Hornets’ 72-64 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 17, the sec-ond highest total in team history. May was 16-for-25 from the field, including six-of-10 from three-point territo-ry; and 10-for-10 at the free throw line. His point total was the most by a Hornet since Tom Davis set the team record with 50 against Brooklyn College on Feb. 1, 1989; and is tops among all NCAA Division I play-ers this season. His 16 field goals in the St. Francis contest and against Coppin State on Feb. 16 are tied for first in a Division I game this season. He has reached double-figures in scoring in each of the last 22 con-tests; and 26 times in 29 games this season. May has also nailed at least one three-point field goal in 25

consecutive games. He is a 2014-15 All-MEAC First Team selection; and was named as the league’s Player-of-the-Week three times this season. May’s scored 32 points in the Hornets' 72-65 win over Wake Forest on Nov. 28. His six three-pointers against St. Francis and Wake Forest marked career highs. He is also second in the MEAC in three-pointers per game (2.8), three-point shooting percentage (.394) and three-pointers made (80); seventh in free throw percentage (81.5%); and tops in total points (612). He is the fourth player in team history with 600 points in a season. One of the first calls Keith Walker received after being named head coach of the Hornets last spring was from May, who left DSU after two seasons from 2011-to-13. May was recruited to Delaware State by Walk-

er when he was a Hornet assistant. The South Haven, Mich., native averaged 5.9 points in 53 games, pri-marily as a reserve in his first two seasons at DSU. May played the 2013-14 season at Div. II St. Augustine’s (N.C.), where he averaged 19.3 points per game; and was named to the All-CIAA First Team. May left St. Augustine’s last summer and re-enrolled at Delaware State. He petitioned the NCAA to allow him to compete for the Hornets this season. May was allowed to practice but did not compete in DSU’s first three games this season while the petition was being considered. Walker has a history with the May family. He coached May’s father (Amere Sr.) at Shaw University.

HAYWOOD POSTS CAREER HIGH VS. CHEYNEY Sophomore guard DeAndre Haywood returned to his early season form with a career-high 25-point performance in

the Hornets’ 90-68 win over Cheyney on Jan. 5. Haywood was nine-for-11 from the field and three-of-four from three-point territory in the contest. It was his first double-figure scoring game since four straight to start the season. Hay-wood came out the gate strong in this season. He topped the Hornets in scoring in each of the first three games, including 23 points vs. Penn in the season opener. He was eight-for-16 from the field and seven-of-10 at the free throw line in the Penn contest. He scored five points in the overtime, including two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. In addition, Haywood tallied five rebounds, four assists and a game-high four steals in 38 minutes of playing time in the opener. The MEAC thought enough of Haywood’s performance at Penn to name him as its first Player-of-the-Week for the 2014-15 season. It also marked the first time he received the honor. Haywood is fifth among Hornet regulars in scoring at 6.0 points per game this season. He is also third on the team with 24 steals this season. Haywood was named to the 2013-14 MEAC All-Rookie Team after averaging 6.2 points in his debut season. Hughes is sixth among team regulars in scoring at 4.5 points per game this season.
