Ruins of St. Paul's

The Ruins of St. Paul's (also known as Sam Ba Sing Tzik) stands adjacent to the famous

Mount Fortress and Macau Museum. The front façade and the grand stone stairs are the only

remains of the greatest church.

First constructed in 1580, St. Paul's Church caught fires in 1595 and 1601. However,

reconstruction started in 1602 soon after the church was burnt down. Completed in 1637, the

church became the biggest Catholic Church in East Asia at that time. Unfortunately, a violent

typhoon hit Macau in 1835 and the church caught fire for the third time leaving its glory a

history. According to historical materials, St Paul's Church, built with white stones, had a

grand vaulted roof. It had three magnificently decorated halls.

Built with granites, Sam Ba Sing Tzik has a baroque facade rich in ornamentation but with

classic oriental characteristics. From the bottom up, the structure has five tiers. The first tier

is comprised of ten Ionic columns with three entrances. The entrance in the middle has

'MATER DEI' carved into it. The two entrances on each side are decorated with bas-reliefs in

the pattern of 'HIS'. The second tier features ten Corinthian columns with three windows. A

Catholic saint is enshrined in each of four tabernacles between columns. The two tiers as a

whole is said to represent the Society of Jesus and the activities of missionaries.

The remaining three tiers are the most decorated. The statue of Madonna stands in the

middle of the third tier, while the statue of Jesus stands on the fourth. The walls are covered

with bas-reliefs in various patterns like devils, angels, symbols of crucifixion, a Portuguese

sailing ship, etc. The triangular combination of the upper three tiers reflects the Holy Trinity

(the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) as well as the Blessed Virgin Mary. A cross stands at

the coping of the wall.

It is worth mentioning that the stone lions at the sides of the third and fourth tiers are

distinctively Chinese. There are also bas-reliefs in designs of chrysanthemum and cherry, as

well as Chinese inscriptions. The surviving façade has long been acknowledged as a perfect

fusion of western and eastern cultures. The Ruins of St. Paul's has been restored during 1990

and 1995.

Senado Square

The Senado Square is a paved area in the centre of the former Portuguese colony of Macau,

enclosed by the buildings of the Leal Senado, the General Post Office, and St. Dominic’s

Church. The square is paved in the traditional Portuguese pavement. The main road of

Macau's historic centre, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro passes through the square. The square is

part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Macau".

Institute for Tourism Studies is a public institution of higher education which is administered

by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government. The institution

offers degrees in tourism, heritage and hospitality

University of Macau

The University of Macau is the only public comprehensive university located in Macau, being

the leading tertiary institution of the city which has excellence in teaching, research and

service to the community. Founded in 1981, it is the oldest higher educational institution in

Macau, as well as the largest university in the city in terms of faculty size and curriculum

offered.

It was originally established as the University of East Asia, which was a private university

followed British university structure and most students came from British Hong Kong. As the

preparation of Macau's handover, it was renamed to University of Macau, acquired as a public

university and reformed to Portuguese university structure by the government of Portuguese

Macau.

The university's campus is currently located in northern Taipa. It is currently organized into

four residential colleges and seven academic faculties. The main medium of instruction is

English, while certain courses are taught in Chinese, Portuguese and Japanese.

It also established own computer network and Internet access in 1993 and 1994 respectively,

introduced the first Internet in Macau. The new campus on Hengqin formally opened in 2014.

Macau University of Science and Technology

Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a university located in Macau, China

on the Cotai Strip opposite the Venetian Macau on Taipa Island, next to the Macau

International Airport. It is a private institution managed by the MUST Foundation and the first

college established after the handover of Macau to the People’s Republic of China. The

university offers full-time and part-time programs.

MUST occupies 212,000 m2. The land and many of its state-of-the-art facilities have been

donated to the school by the government while several MUST investors are among the

highest ranks of officials. The Olympic-standard stadium and a football field are available to

the students and the public. The university enrolls 5,000 full-time students. MUST recruits

students from all over the world as well as 20 provinces and cities in Mainland China for its

undergraduate and graduate programs.

Do's and Don't's

General Rules

� Follow the local laws.

� Be polite and respectful to everyone, especially when others are talking or when

attending assemblies.

� Be responsible and clean; dress proper winter school uniform decently, you

represent the school and your culture!

� Be punctual to all activities.

� Stay with the group at all times.

� Safety is the most important thing when travelling.

� Be active in learning and understanding the local culture.

� Pay attention to the emergency numbers.

� Keep the most important items — money and HKID — with you at all times.

� Your belongings are your own responsibility; keep a close eye on them at all

times.

� Put on name tags.

� Behave according to the local norms; DO NOT vandalize places, instigate

conflicts with the locals, break rules, or be too excited in public places.

� Take photos, videos or make records of the things you see.

� Be familiarized with the itinerary.

� NO gaming or music devices.

� If you damage anything, you will be responsible for paying for the damages.

� NO leaving the team without permission.

On the tourist bus

� Stay in your own seat; don’t stand up and walk.

� Keep silence.

� Fasten the seat belt at all times.

� Pay attention and show respect to the tourist guide (NO Music).

� Remember the vehicle number of the bus.

� Keep the bus clean; throw out your own rubbish.

� NO eating or drinking on the bus.

� Be punctual at all times; being late will affect everyone.

� Be helpful to your schoolmates.

On the ferry

� Go to your assigned seat as your ticket indicates.

� Fasten your seatbelts and stay in your own seats, avoid walking around

unnecessarily.

� Keep a close eye on your personal belongings, especially your money and HKID.

� Take the motion sickness pills before boarding if necessary.

� Keep the noise level decently quiet and avoid causing disruption to others.

� Pay attention to the safety instructions.

� Keep the ferry clean; throw out your own rubbish.

� Keep calm and obey the instructions when there is an emergency on the ferry.

Medicine

� Bring along with you some medicine, such as Panadol or stomach tablets, for

emergency purposes.

� Please keep the doctor’s certificate with you for prescribed medication.
