Khichdi:An All-Encompassing Comfort FoodAmidst a myriad of lip smacking vegetarian cuisines that India o�ers to the world, Khichdi has undoubtedly emerged as one of the most exquisite dishes. Over millennia, Khichdi has endeared its place in the heart of millions as a staple food in the Indian homes. Khichdi intrinsically is a minimalistic food with a mix of rice, lentils and aromatic spices in a pleasant, satisfying, nutrition packed manner. It is a salty composition usually served with milk, curd or curry. However, Khichdi can be transformed into lavish delicious avatars by enriching it with various enjoyable recipes. Khichdi is hailed as a super food that can be cooked in just one simmering vessel.

The Chronicles of KhichdiExhaustive references showcase how Khichdi has touched all, from the inhabitants of humble homes to those of royal palaces. The term Khichdi borrows its meaning from the Sanskrit word “khicca”, a dish of rice and lentils. Indians and foreigners, whoever came across this palatable dish of Khichdi, they celebrated it as a simple food with an amazing simplicity in preparation.

The history of Khichdi is traced since Vedic civilization to the Mahabharata times, from the Mughal era till date. From Chanakya to Chandragupta Maurya, from Greek historian Megasthenes to Moroccan scholar Ibn Batuta, from Russian adventurer Nikitin to French merchant Jean Tavernir, all have described how Khichdi was a part of contemporary food in their writings.

Khichdi has assumed diverse delicious forms not only in Indian states, but it is also believed to have inspired British dish Kedgeree as well.

Khichdi witnessed a new milestone on 4 Nov, 2017 in World India Food event, where over 800 kg of traditional Indian Khichdi made with rice, pulses, cereals and spices was promoted as Brand India Food, rightly capturing the distinctive feature of unity in diversity of Indian culture. This was a unique feature that was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. The cooked khichdi was distributed to nearly 60,000 orphan children and to the Heads of Foreign Missions in India.
