Briefly

Spinella Dell’Avanzato (PhD in Sociology and Political Sociology at the University of Florence, Faculty of Political Sciences) is currently Lecturer in Theory and Techniques of Public Communications, at the Department of Historical-Social and Philosophical Studies, Faculty of Liberal-Arts in Arezzo, University of Siena. She collaborates with InterUniversity Center GEO (giovani, educazione, orientamento – youth, education, training), based at the Department of Historical-Social and Philosophical Studies in Arezzo. Her fields of research and her publications are focused on: theories and practices of deliberative democracy, social theory, political culture, institutional and public communication, dynamics and role of public sphere and civil society, multicultural society, moral and ethic issues.In the last years has extended her scientific interest on: capabilities approach, Education for democratic citizenship, active and dynamic Welfare, e-democracy.

Thesis entitled “Il modello Habermasiano di democrazia deliberativa: verso una comune cultura politica” (The Habermasian Model of

Deliberative Democracy: Toward Common Political Culture), under supervision of Prof. Andrea Messeri and Prof. Ambrogio Santambrogio.

It’s based on an analytical approach to the habermasian model of deliberative politics. It studied in-deep the link between deliberative model and the new problematic issues of the society: multiculturalism, secularization, redefinition of the borders between moral and ethic sphere. The multicultural context makes the main democracy’s models (as Liberalism or Communitarism) obsolete because they’re based on the historical and cultural homogeneity of the political community. Nowadays, The quality of the political culture is no more based on common and fix values and principles, but on the exploration, through the dialogue and the argue, of possible solutions and norms to search and to share intersubjectively. The deliberative democracy seems to offer more suitable instruments in order to resolve such issues. Particularly, the thesis is concentrated on a redefinition of the concept of common political culture (shared political cultures from Habermas’ Theory). The heuristic concept can constitute an instrument in order to recognize, to describe and to interpret new social situations and unexpected controfactual trends of individuals that catch up understandings and succeed to elaborate problematics in a position to “affect” the political agenda.

July 2003Graduated cum laude in Liberal-Arts from the University of Siena-Arezzo, with a sociological thesis entitled: “Comune cultura politica. Educare alla solidarietà civica e alla cittadinanza” (Common Political Culture. Educating to the civic solidarity and citizenship).

Specific University curriculum’s subjects: Sociology, Sociology of communication, Sociology of the organization, Social Research, Cultural Anthropology, Political Economy.

The thesis focuses on analysis of the main postmodern society’s changes. Social, political, economics and cultural transformations have drawn a new “postnational constellation”. Liberal and Communitarian approaches do not guarantee the social cohesion and the instruments in order to manage the “society of the risk”. The procedural model democratic of Habermas seems to offer elements, indications and possible conditions in order to redefine a common political culture to improve the civic solidarity and the citizenship.

2010/2011 Lecturer in Theory and Techniques of Public Communications (36 hours, 6 credits), at the Faculty of Liberal-Arts in Arezzo, University of Siena.

The course focuses on the Public, Social, Political and Institutional Communication in Italy from ’80 to nowadays. It provides a close examination about the role of information and communication technology (e-government and e-democracy) and the main democracy’s changes (deliberative democracy). In particular is analyzed the educative value of the deliberative democracy (based on Rosenberg and Fung-Wright theory).

The course provides a close examination about the new model of communication based on Habermas’ concept of “communicative power”. There is a circular and reciprocal relation among communicatively-generated power, legitimate law, and State, so the citizens can influence the process of social institutionalization.

2007/2008

Assistant Professor of the Course Theory and Techniques of Public Communications (24 hours, 4 credits), at the Faculty of Liberal-Arts in Arezzo, University of Siena.

Focus on Benhabib’s book “The Claims of Culture”. In the multicultural context human cultures are the constant change of imaginary boundaries. It presents an alternative approach, developing an understanding of cultures as continually creating, re-creating, and renegotiating the imagined boundaries between "us" and "them." A double-track model of deliberative democracy (a parallelism with Habermasian deliberative politics) permits maximum cultural contestation within the official public sphere as well as in and through social movements and the institutions of civil society.

2008- 2010 Research Associate in Sociology at the Department of Historical-Social and Philosophical Studies, University of Siena-Arezzo.

Title of the research project: “Trasformazioni della democrazia e cultura politica: competenze e procedure per i processi deliberativi e educazione alla cittadinanza attiva” (Changes of the democracy and political culture: competences and procedures for the deliberative processes and education to the active citizenship), coordinated by Prof. Andrea Messeri

The main goal has been to inquire and to value the tie between the deliberative processes and the common transformations of the political culture in terms of competences and comunicative-deliberative procedures. It has been assess, moreover, the educative potential of the deliberative democracy. At last, the research provides an analysis and surveying on the empirical searches that measure these issues (competences, communicative procedures). Particularly, there are three traditions of surveying taken in consideration: searches on the procedures’ quality of the deliberative democracy; searches on the citizenship competences; searches on the capabilities (Amartya Sen’s theory).

Researcher for national university research group (PRIN 2004) on project: Divenire europei. Attori, reti e processi nella costruzione dell'identità europea”, (Becoming European. Actors, networks and processes in the construction of European identity), University of Florence.

Analysis of the characteristics of couples composed of one Italian citizen and another belonging to another European country, from the standpoint of a combination of the most significant socio-demographic traits of both partners; analysis and comment of the applicable literature; quantitative analysis with original elaboration of individual census data of the year 2001 and the Special Multi-scope Analysis by Istat of 1998 dedicated to the family; qualitative research through direct in depth interviews of 30 couples.
