Mellody Hobson’s: Reason For Her Career

Hobson did a summer internship at

Ariel, which was run by another

Princeton graduate, John W.

Rogers, Jr. "That experience

convinced me that was where my

Mellody Hobson’s Favorite Teacher

Jim Wall ,former St. Ignatius English teacherand Hobson’s favorite teacher because “he

was so unconventional and such a non-conformist” in his approach to thinking and viewing the world with eyes wide open. He

also taught her to appreciate diversity, which is a trait she still embraces today.

Mellody Hobson Relationship with Her Mother

• Mellody Hobson’s single mother cared for her dearly who worked as a real-estate agent, Hobson grew up in downtown Chicago.

• She was the youngest of six children, though by her own admission she felt like an only child because her oldest sibling was 25 years older than she, and the youngest was nine years older.

Mellody Hobson Relationship with John Rogers

• My first impression of Mellody was that she was very articulate and glamorous to the point of being intimidating.

• As I got to know her a little better I realized that in addition to having intelligence, charm, a great job, and designer clothes Mellody was also a tireless achiever.

• Notice that I didn’t use the term “overachiever” because that would imply that her achievements are above her innate skill level.

• No, Mellody is one of those rare achievers who unintentionally make the rest of us feel like slackers.

Mellody Hobson’s Upbringing

Mellody Hobson's childhood wasn't easy. She was the

youngest of six kids, all raised by their single mother. Money

was worse than tight.

Mellody Hobson’s Upbringing

Money was worse than tight. And the family moved constantly,

from apartment to apartment, and from one Chicago

neighborhood to the next.

Mellody Hobson’ s Vision Today

Even with so many successes, there is still so much that

needs to be done. For me the obvious issue is the dramatic gap between the haves and

have not's. In a nation of such incredible wealth, it is a

tragedy so many people live in poverty. Ariel is committed to closing the wealth gap in our

country through education and financial literacy.

Unfortunately, Americans are facing a financial crisis,

particularly in regards to retirement.

Mellody Hobson’ s Vision Today

With the demographics of an aging population, this is going to become even more and more

of an issue over the next decade, ultimately affecting everyone. Too many people simply aren’t prepared for

retirement and everyone will pay a price. This is why Ariel is

so committed to financial literacy and education as well as our annual Black Investor

Survey—we want to help close the wealth gap in this country.

Mellody Hobson’s Funds to pay for school

Hobson jump-started her career in finance while as a student at the Woodrow Wilson

School of International Relations at Princeton University to prepare herself for a

career in the business world. While somewhat of an unlikely pairing in what her

chosen profession would become, she returned home to Chicago in the summers

and began as an intern at Ariel Capital Management (which also employs four

other St. Ignatius College Prep alumni along with Hobson).

My Thoughts Of Melody Hobson

The reason I chose Mellody Hobson was because to me personally this is the type of person I’ve always thought that I would be when I grow up and I wanted to major in business management when I was to enter college also. However, I decided to major in Nursing instead.
