OKU Sutro Excellence Day

OKU-Sutro Excellence Day is an annual event at the University of the Pacific Dugoni School which showcases and celebrates student accomplishments in research, clinical dentistry and community service. This year’s event, Held on May 23rd 2018, was part of a 20 year tradition at the school, featuring poster presentations, case presentations with patients, a keynote speaker, reception and awards ceremony. The event is sponsored by Delta Delta Chapter of OKU - a long time contributor to the day - and the Dr. Henry A. Sutro Award Endowment. OKU has been providing funds for awards and supporting Excellence Day for many years. Excellence Day embodies the spirit of OKU so much so that OKU was incorporated into the name of the event. In addition to contributing funds, OKU members are involved in the event planning, the integration of the poster competition into classwork throughout the school year, providing judges, and maintaining an information table at the event to share information about OKU with students and visitors.

Excellence Day is a long-standing tradition that allows the Dugoni School community to share their projects with colleagues, friends and family. Although there is a competitive component, Excellence Day is a collaborative celebration of the multi-dimensional interests and talents of the Dugoni School student body.

The program began with a guest keynote lecture entitled "Oral Cancer: Clinical Challenges and Molecular Solutions" by Dr. Patrick Kyongmin Ha, professor and chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at University of California, San Francisco. Student presentations, research posters and clinical accomplishments in a variety of categories were then on display throughout the school's clinical floors. Patients attended to support the student exhibits. Over 40 students participated, exhibiting their work in clinical, research and community-based dentistry. At the awards ceremony, remarks were given by OKU President Ned Nix and OKU Member Dean Nader Nadershahi. The awards were then presented in the following categories:

Clinical awards were given, in areas of:

- Removable Prosthodontics - Endodontics - Restorative Dentistry - Implant Dentistry - Best Oral Rehabilitation Design - Best presentation within each of the eight Group Practices – presentations as part of coursework completed

by graduating third year students.

Awards were also given for research, including:

- ADA Foundation/Colgate Dental Students' Conference on Research Award - Hinman Symposium Award - San Francisco Section of the AADR Award - OKU International Dental Student Review Presentation Award - ADA/Dentsply Student Clinicians of the ADA Award - OKU Senior Student Research Award - Best Graduate Endontology Presentation Award

Abstracts of the work were submitted on line to the University Abstract website and to the new Pacific Journal of Health.

OKU Exemplary Leadership Award for Community Health Special Excellence Day awards were given in a third category – Community Health. Individual OKU members as well as the chapter sponsored $6,000 of monetary awards titled “The OKU Exemplary Leadership Award for Outstanding Community Health Projects”. In this award category, judges select 4-6 students based upon criteria such as evidence of EBD design for the project/event and utilization of public health principles. Students were selected for their exemplary leadership, significantly engaging peers in oral health projects that were customized to the community members served. The six winning students collectively directed and personally volunteered hundreds of hours of oral health service. These students actively pursued community health projects in addition to their coursework and patient care clinic hours and within the time constraints of a three-year, year-round dental school curriculum.

Annual Business Meeting

The Annual Delta Delta Chapter Dinner and Business meeting includes both faculty and alumni members and was held at the school on May 2, 2018. Then President, Ned Nix, lead the meeting and recapped the year, with particular thanks to Dr. Paul Subar, the 2016-17 President who led the organization in spite of loss of support staff. The year included two OKU members seeking transfer into the Delta Delta Chapter:

- Dr. Mudita Agrawal, who is in the AEGD Program, was inducted into the Chi Chapter at the University of

Michigan. She has transferred in as an associate member until she obtains faculty status.

- Dr. Richard Evans, who was inducted into the Gamma Chapter at the University of Washington at St.

Louis, is faculty at the Dugoni School and is now an active chapter member.

In addition to the traditional meeting topics, this year there was a lively discussion on ideas about how to get younger members involved in OKU. The meeting ended with a CE course on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, the inclusion of mindfulness for the dental practitioner and patient, taught by Dr. Payal Bhandari CEO & Senior Physician at SF Advanced Health, an integrative medical clinic in San Francisco, CA

Commencement

At the Dental School graduation ceremony OKU is front and center, starting with the Mace Bearer- Dr. Robert Christoffersen (inducted 1967) as the longest practicing faculty member in the Dental School. OKU members are prominent during the ceremony and of course, new inductees are proud to wear their stoles.

Student Support

In addition to Excellence Day, Delta Delta Chapter promotes and rewards student achievement through several means, including:

Future Educators Night Biannually, the Delta Delta Chapter and The Pacific Chapter of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) invite students with an interest in a career in dental education to Future Educator's Night. The purpose of the evening is to provide a forum for students to hear about what a career in dental education entails and information on how they can become a dental educator in the future. Following a dinner and opening remarks from the Dean, stories are heard from distinguished faculty members about their time as educators, what the issues and rewards are. A Q&A session follows where students can ask the panel personal questions. The opportunity for frank discussion has led to some OKU members informally serving as mentors for those third year students and residents interested in teaching.

Scholarships Every year at Convocation, the Chapter gives $750 for each of the following:

- The Supreme Chapter’s William S. Kramer Award of Excellence -The award is given to recognize a rising junior student who has demonstrated scholarship, character, and the potential promise for advancement of dentistry and service to humanity. This award is funded by Dr. Bruce Valentine ’69, past OKU Chapter President.

- Dr. Walter Wong Scholarship Award -Dr. Wong was a 1940 graduate of Pacific and a faculty member in Operative Dentistry for many years, He served as secretary/treasurer of OKU for 23 years until his death in 1987. Those who knew him will remember him for his positive attitude and dedication to our school. This award was established by the Delta Delta Chapter and is given for service demonstrated during the first academic year of study.

- Dr. Eric B. Bystrom Memorial Award -This award is given to the member of the graduating class who is focused on Pediatric Dentistry and a representative of the spirit and working enthusiasm demonstrated by Dr. Eric Bystrom, Chair of Pediatric Dentistry from 1980-1988.

Highlighting Chapter Members

Delta Delta Membership At Large Delta Delta Chapter has an extensive roster of members, maintaining communication with inactive and lifetime members in addition to those who are current with dues. The Chapter maintains a database with more than 800 members. Members reside throughout the United States and the Chapter receives dues from as far away as Europe. Delta Delta continues to improve its membership database through cooperation with the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Alumni Association.

A strong OKU influence is evident in the school via the administration: Seven of the eight school departments are chaired by OKU members. The current Dean, Dr. Nader Nadershahi and the school namesake, Dean Emeritus Dr. Arthur Dugoni, are members, with Dr. Dugoni (inducted in 1948) as the oldest active member in the chapter.

2018 Gies Award Winner: Dr. David W. Chambers The American Dental Education Association's ADEAGies Foundation recently honored recipients of the 2018 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation and Achievement. Among the distinguished standouts was Dr. David W. Chambers, professor of dental education at the Dugoni School (Inducted 1992), who was selected for the "Gies Award for Achievement - Dental Educator" based on his decades of contributions to the field of dental education. The awards were officially presented during a black-tie gala held March 19 during the ADEA Annual Session in Orlando, Fla.

Named after William J. Gies, Ph.D., the Gies Awards honor individuals and organizations that exemplify the highest standards in oral health and dental education, research and leadership. The honorees were chosen by a panel of judges and leading industry experts, including the ADEAGies Foundation's Board of Trustees.

"The many achievements of Dr. Chambers include championing competency-based education, advancing humanism in dental education, managing a three-year DDS curriculum, raising standards through quality assurance, and publishing thought leadership and research that has changed dental education and the wider profession," said Dr. Nader Nadershahi, dean of the Dugoni School of Dentistry. "This is well-deserved recognition and we are so proud of Dr. Chambers and his more than four decades of leadership and involvement in education and oral healthcare."

Dr. Chambers continues to usher in new achievements. Most recently, he launched the Clinical Judgment Laboratory, making the Dugoni School of Dentistry one of the first dental schools in the world to formally introduce such a lab. The virtual lab places dentists' clinical judgment as both the driving force of improving oral health and a topic for rigorous scientific study. It is a collaboration of scholars, practitioners, policy makers, and industry representatives seeking to understand and influence dentists' clinical judgment by creating and sharing theory and data.

Previous Gies Award Winners at Dugoni: Including this most recent award, the Dugoni School family has been recognized over the years with a total of four Gies Awards -more than any other Dental School thus far. All of the awards have been for direct achievement or for programming under the leadership of OKU members. In 2017, the Dugoni School's Pacific Center for Special Care received the Gies Award for "Outstanding Innovation - Academic Dental Institution." In 2011, the Dugoni School received the Gies Award for "Outstanding Vision - Academic Dental Institution" and in 2009, Dean Emeritus Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni received the Gies Award for "Outstanding Achievement - Dental Educator."
