Spring/ Summer 2011
Another year has come and past here at The Ohio State University, and
we have connued to deliver. Last spring, Delta Theta Sigma was named Most
Improved Chapter by the University. Reasons for this have included our
increased involvement, great standing with the University, and our
exponenally beer involvement with the Greek community here at Ohio State.
In addion to being named most improved chapter, Chris Barlow, our alumni
advisor was named Best Advisor by the University for his work with DTS to make
it what it is today.
In addion, we were also in the running for Chapter of the Year with
Sigma Phi Epsilon (the largest, most involved, and best established fraternity on
campus), Alpha Tau Omega (another powerhouse on OSUs campus) and Phi
Gamma Delta (yet another powerhouse at OSU). By the company we keep, it is
clear to see how much work we have been doing to get our organizaon back
on top here at OSU. Unfortunately, Sigma Phi Epsilon won the award, but it was
to be expected based on their acve membership and establishment, as they
have won the coveted award several mes in the past few years.
Finally, as if to top it all o, DTS performed very well during Greek
Week. Our pairing ended up coming in fourth. Considering in the past, there was
lile to no involvement in this week of acvies, one can clearly see the
dedicaon and hard work of our members. During Greek week, there was an
event called Greek god, which is essenally a talent show. Our President, Dave
Dziak, ended up winning the award for his famous Chris Farley impersonaon
with the help of Ausn Kirk and Jusn Lelesch. It is clear to see that our reless
involvement has skyrocketed our name recognion amongst the other Greek
organizaons here at Ohio State. We will connue to work with everything we
have so that come this me next year, we will be able to report that we have
won Chapter of the Year.

Greengs esteemed alumni and parents! There is much to report I dont even
know where to begin. The end of the 2010-2011 school year has been an excing one
to say the least, where our organizaon has quickly moved through the ranks to
become a top contender in the Greek community. We as a chapter have put in an
enormous amount of work to make this all possible. Spring quarter we oriented our
newer members into leadership posions, and they have denitely been delivering.
One of the rst things that we did was renovate the New Member Training Process, in
which you can read more about later on in this document. One of the most excing
things that has happened was the fact that we were named Most Improved Chapter.
This is a true testament to all of the work that our members have put in.
Our organizaon has also vastly improved. By that I don t mean just DTS in
general, I mean the actual organizaon of the organizaon. Our rush commiee
structure has become a working commiee, with the rush chair at the head of
commiee and members within the commiee that have their respecve dues as
well. We have streamlined our structure for maximum ecacy. Another awesome
development was the fact that we ended up coming in 4th place for Greek Week.
Obviously the rst queson that comes to mind is why we didnt take rst. With the
powerhouses of other chapters and their numbers, I am very proud that we ended up
nishing where we did. We were paired with Delta Zeta, Alpha Sigma Upsilon, Delta Upsilon, and Evans Scholars.
Unfortunately for our pairings, there was lile involvement from the other fraternies. Despite this, our members
brought everything to the table to be involved with every acvity. Because of our hard work, Greek life at Ohio State
has really noced us, and we have become much more than just that one house on 13th that plays a lot of country
music. Both Ausn Kirk and myself have become very involved in IFC, the Inter-Fraternity Council, with Ausn
recently being named Vice President of Scholarship. We
have denitely become leaders in the community,
something we are all very excited about.
There have been a good deal of problems with the
Greek community not playing by the rules, and other
chapters have suered the consequences. I am proud tosay we are in very very good standing with the University,
which will connue to yield enormous amounts of
opportunies for our chapter to connue to play a role as
leaders on this campus. I am very excited for the future, as
we have without a doubt taken a turn for the beer. DTS
is on arguably the most posive upswing in recent history,
and I am proud to have been a part of that in our
chapters history.

This quarter has had both old and new dues
for me. I have been keeping up with the minutes,
role, and the acvity chart as I have in previous
quarters. The only new duty that I have taken on is
to keep track of the new Study Tables system that
we designed. My role in this system is to design and
print out sign-in sheets for the study tables and keep
track of everyones hours. Everyone remember to
study hard, midterms are coming up!
We are a strong organizaon and are able to do great
things by taking the lead. This past spring and summer, I had
taken on the responsibility of insuring that Delta Theta Sigma
was nancially sound. The work horse of establishing this was
enabling a Hunngton Online account and acve Excel spread
sheet to keep our ledger in check between the monthly
statements. I feel that this has helped us become more aware
of our expenditures and allow us to purchase things a lile
more wisely. With our summer rent that was brought in, the
house was able to invest in three brand new washer / dryer
sets. Our execuve team believes in
paying it forward and I believe that we
have accomplished that in the literal senseto invest back in the house for future DTS
members.

As usual, we are working very hard in the
realm of recruitment. Since I took over the
posion of recruitment chairman last spring,
we have instuted a rush commiee,
thought up new and innovave ways to
recruit, constructed a names list as a
recruing tool, and have tried to widen the
spectrum of events that we hold for
recruing purposes. We are hoping for a
class of 20-25 in winter quarter.
Also, I have personally been working on acouple of things to help improve recruitment for
our chapter in the future. Im currently in the process of wring
up a Recruitment Chairmans Manual that will be passed down
from chairman to chairman over the years so that the new
chairman has something to reference. Im also in the process of
pung together a recruitment training lecture to be used
within the new member training process in order that we can
get everyone on the same page from the get go.
For the completed summer projects: the largest repair wa
made to KKK, where more than 25 hours were spent.
First, the door had to be replaced. It was supplanted with
beautiful oak door and reframing of the doorway. As yo
walk into the room, another doorway was present but
against fire code. That doorway had to be ripped out an
reframed. This was accomplished, along with moving th
electrical boxes. Fresh drywall, trim boards, and a bab
blue paint finished off the ingress.
Other home enhancements included: installing drywall
in the closet of Triangle, repairing the front porch
light, painting yellow safety markers on the exterior
basement stairs, and a bundle of other small
repairs. To finish off, I will note some projects that occurred during the two work
days we had over the summer. These include: sanding/repainting front door and
frame, painting the basement dining area, reorganizing the boiler room, installing
river rock in the front flower beds, and other miscellaneous sanding/painting job
I will be unavailable 2011 Autumn Quarter, having a co-op once
again. The interim House Manager is Austin Bahnsen. Its been fun explaining
the current standing of the house (if it is standing). GO BUCKS!

Spring Quarter very well may be one of the busiest but most enjoyable mes at Ohio State. As the university community crawls out of apparent winter hibernaon, fresh from spring break, its
full throle for all classes, clubs, and organizaons, and you best believe the men of Delta Theta
Sigma were kicking o a fast and successful quarter with the best of them.
Highlighted by cookouts, soball, corn hole, paintballing, and other great mes scaered
throughout, there were few of the posive facets of college life not enjoyed by DTS members and
guests. Early in the quarter, ve acve members, in the early stages of their terms as chapter
ocers, aended the rst annual GO! Ohio State Greek Leadership Conference. This newly
developed experience was a great way to start the new ocer term and set some excellent, yet
aainable goals for the upcoming year. Many contacts and networking opons were acquired from
other leaders and chapters of the Ohio State Greek community, which have and will connue to
serve us well.
On April second and ninth, DTS conducted our incoming freshman scholarship interviewsand house tours/info sessions for 22 young men and their families. We are excited to have 12 quality
guys, who you will meet later in this publicaon, living in the house on scholarship for the 2011
school year. Over the summer, we met with each of the recipients and their families, once
again, during their university orientaon. Each group was treated to dinner by the chapter
and then informed about the beginning of the year and given the opportunity to ask any
quesons they may have had. We believe this group will play a large roll in the succession
and progression of the organizaon from what has been established and the possibilies
are very encouraging.
Eight acve DTS members aended the CFAES Professional Development Night,
held in the Performance Hall of the Ohio Union on April 12. The theme was based on professional dress and proper are for
various business or formal situaons. Our own past president, Jed Bookman, modeled the what not to wear garb for one of the
condions.
Aglympics was yet again a great success for Delta Theta Sigma, as, even with a depleted number of parcipants, we wereable to complete the Three-peat! The climax of the events was undoubtedly the awards presentaon at the CFAES Recognion
Banquet in front of over 700 students, faculty, families, and Ohio agricultural organizaon representaves. Also during the
banquet, DTS was proud to be represented by three members on the banquet steering commiee, eight other members assisng
with set-up and service, and a number of award winners, including Jed Bookman as a top ten senior.
Greek Week came to OSU at the end of April and beginning of May and it did not disappoint. Delta Theta Sigma was very
acve in the events throughout the week. The Greek Games were very enjoyable and prosperous for DTS and our pairings. We
had at least 13 members parcipate in various acvies, resulng in favorable results in jousng, relays, dodge ball, and a few
other events. Our president, Dave Dziak, put on a great show for the audience at the Greek god and goddess contest and came
away victorious as god over all the Greeks.
DTS showed well at both Relay for Life and Scarlet and Gray Ag Day. Our volunteer hours, donaons, and services
provided to both of these great causes did not go unnoced and we hope to expand our roles in these and similar events in the
future.
The school year was capped o by the Greek Awards, where all our work
and enjoyable eorts from the concluding year paid o, as we received the Most
Improved IFC Chapter award. I would like to personally thank our membership,
alumni, families, and, especially, our acve execuve board for their hard work,
shared vision, and loyalty to the fraternity as we connue to improve and strive to
beer ourselves and the organizaon.

In an effort to boost our philanthropic output, DTS paired up
with Beta Theta Pi and Alpha Gamma Rho on May 12th for a hog roast
to benefit Muscular Dystrophy Association. AGR brought in a roaster,
and the team spent all morning roasting some pork. After that, DTS
pulled all the pork and prepared sandwiches. The sandwiches were
thus sold at a reasonable price of $5 each. By the time the night was
over, we raised over $700 for MDA. This event marks a historic period
in our time, where we have begun a massive outreach effort to increase
our philanthropy and support the community around us. We look
forward to hosting yet another similar event come next spring to
continue our efforts to help the community at large. The reason that other fraternities have
excelled over us in past years was their philanthropic and community service output. This
past year we have doubled our output. Look forward to increased amounts of activity that
will not only benefit generous organizations, but also our image and prestige as an
organization.
Every Spring, The College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences related groups and
organizaons eld teams for the Aglympics. Aglympics is an Olympics with an agricultural twist which
includes such ag related acvies as Cornhole, Hay Bale Toss and Mini-Tractor Races. For Aglympics the
goal of Delta Theta Sigma as two me champions was to connue the dynasty and make it a Threepeat.
As usual, Dr. Pat Whington had a strong showing in the Pie Eang Contest nishing in Second Place
albeit a very close second. Eric Radachi placed Third in the Golf Chipping Contest. We came in Third
Place in both the Corn Cob Relay and Egg toss thanks to the help of Jed Bookman, Vice President Ausn
Kirk, Rush Chair Jusn Lelesch, and Assistant Treasurer Kade Louiso. In the Cornhole event, Ausn Kirk
and Travis Spicer came in Second Place in a very highlycontested nal round. This year included a new
presentaon of the nal results. The winners of
AgLympics were announced at the annual CFAES Banquet
and through our hard work and commitment; we were
awarded the Aglympics Champions for the third
consecuve year.

As you know, the acve chapter has been doing a scholarship program for awhile now and this year is no dierent. We are happy to open our doors this
year to twelve freshmen. All of the freshmen this year have been very acve
with the acve chapter; parcipang in Farm Science Review, various
recruitment events, and other events on campus we have been acve in. We
as acves are very excited about the acveness and desire for personal
growth that we have observed in this scholarship class and are expecng
great things from them.Mike Faga

New Member Training Rennovaon
Okay, let me be honest right off the bat: most of you will not be too pleased with this article. Our new
member process was old and outdated. It had remnants of the past ways of hazing. Hazing no longer has a
place in any organization, especially that of a prestigious organization such as DTS. We had to make some
changes before the University got involved. We were able to accomplish all of these changes without being
issued an ultimatum from the University. Ill be honest, they had a hand in creating useful alternatives to
hazing, although the process created was ultimately our own. After months of laborious meetings, we were
able to come up with a still intense process, but much more clearly reflects the values of our fraternity. Due to
the fact that this is sensitive information, I will only outline a few broad topics thus that the process in and of
itself remains secretive (though the University has received a copy and has given approval).
-Absolutely no alcohol or hazing of any kind
-We retain the six week process, still complete with the new members learning DTS, Greek Life, and Ohio
State information
-No High Tribe
-More team building activities such as Ditch, Group Project, and a possible wilderness retreat in which we
create activities to focus on our main ideals without actually revealing them until formal initiation
-A focus on professionalism: each week theres a professional aspect culminating during I-week with a mock
job interview with a professional
The Friday of I-week with the alumni is still on, and we would very much like our alumni to still play
a heavy role in cultivating our young men into agricultural leaders of tomorrow. For our professionalism
aspect, it would be helpful to have an alumni come and speak to our new members each week about
professionalism in the real world. For example, Dan Toland, social media expert for Farm Bureau, has already
volunteered to have a hand in teaching our new members social media awareness during our week dealingwith this professionalism aspect. As always, please contact me with any questions regarding the process. I
would be more than willing to email you the process in its entirety (alumni only). Feel free to make comments
and suggestions. I can be reached at [email protected]. Thanks for all of your understanding. We
are simply trying to continue to become the best fraternity on campus, and it all begins with orienting our new
members the right way.

Partying SmartCornstock Goes o without a Hitch
As we all know, Cornstock in a staple in DTS social
funcons. With only two big pares a year, we decided to do this
one by the books. Cornstock my Freshman year was a disaster. We
had items stolen from our house, there were plenty of unwelcome
hoodlums, and we certainly did not play by the rules in regards to
the University. This past year we did things a lile bit dierently,
mostly because IFC has begun a crackdown on social funcons for fraternies. Chapters are no longer allowed to purchase or
serve alcohol with chapter funds. Everyone brought plenty of drinks based on the BYOB rule enforced by IFC. This had a
tremendous impact on the guests that arrived.
First, we only had guests who were close friends, or people within the ag or Greek community. This caused the event to
have virtually no problems: no physical altercaons, no the, and a good me. We had the house on lockdown, surrounded by
snow fencing, people checking IDs at the door, and access to inside completely o limits. Clean up was easy and we had no
problems with Columbus or Campus police. Prior to the event, we had both an IFC risk management ocial as well as a Campus
Police Ocer check and approve of our set up, which led to smooth operaons when the night began. We are proud to report
that we sll had aendance in excess of 300 people, and our image as a great place to hang out did not suer in the least. More
importantly, we have become a model to other organizaons as to how to run an ecient and safe social funcon. Of course
alumni are always more than welcome to aend these events. Be sure to check our website calendar for all of our events!
Supporng American Cancer Society via Relay for Life
Once again, DTS showed its commitment to higher causes and aended Relay for Life, an event put on by the American
Cancer Society. This event at Ohio State raises vat amounts of money for The American Cancer Society. It is both a fun and solemn
event. It takes place on Lincoln Tower eld for a full 24 hours. Quite a few of our guys stayed the enre me, in order to put on a
consistent showing, something other organizaons could not have bragged as easily. Most organizaons bring a tent to sleep in
over night. We of course, love to stand out, thus we brought a couch. This aracted members of the community to inquire about
our unique establishment, and led to greater networking. There were several fun events, such as corn hole, pickup football games,
wieball, and various others. The event had a DJ, and speakers from ACS. The night culminated with a walk around the eld, lit
by glow scks in bags with vicms of cancer wrien on them. Seeing as how some of our members had been personally aected, it
was a somber experience. It again, was rooted in our core beliefs of philanthropy. We ended up donang a good bit of money to
ACS through purchasing food from other organizaons thatwere raising money. Relay for Life is a huge event that is put
on every spring. As alumni, you could always donate to our
team by contacng Jusn Lelesch at [email protected].
However, there is always the opportunity to come hang out
at our couch and tell stories of fun DTS mes to help the
long night on the couch pass.

Summer Update
Summer has been extremely busy for all of us here at DTS. We had a
record number of people living at the fraternity this summer, with nearly
every room lled. We had seven acves present all summer, constantly
working on capital improvements to our facility. In addion, we sub -leased
rooms out to other Greek, as well as non-Greek, students here at OSU. We
were able to raise some funds that have certainly helped out our bank
account and will provide us with resources for the connuaon of capital
improvements, as well as investment into our rush, community service, and
philanthropic eorts.
In addion, we had members furthering their
professional careers here in Columbus. President Dave
Dziak worked (and connues to work) with the Ohio
House of Representaves, the Building a Beer Ohio
campaign, as well as a magazine called The Odyssey, in
which DTS made the front cover recently. Senior Ryan
Butcher gained valuable experience working with the
Ohio EPA, and Vice President Ausn Kirk connues to
work with ODNR. He also had the opportunity to go to
DC with Farm Bureau. We connue to gain presge for our organizaon amongst top jobs here inColumbus, and are gaining recognion for our organizaon as one that produces leaders for the
work force.
We also had the opportunity to network with other organizaons here on campus. We
met with several other fraternies and sorories to increase our name recognion across the board. We had
signicant contact with Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Gamma Delta, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Sigma Upsilon, as well as a
variety of others in working with furthering our posive image on campus. The contacts have begun to yield eorts
with philanthropies, community service, as well as social events.
Not to sell ourselves short, it must be noted that there were a good deal of social events that happened over
the course of the summer. Ausn Kirk and Dave Dziak invested in a pool, which was a
good way to cool o during the hot summer nights. Aer a long hard day at work,
people ocked to DTS for a night to unwind. It must be noted once again, that this
was all done in a very safe manner with no issues . It seems that DTS is sll way ahead
of the curve in regards to social funcons. We work hard and party smart. Once
summer was over, we had made plenty of contacts that will connue to further our
posive image all across Ohio States campus.

We, the members of Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity, in order to promote agriculture, to secure
a higher degree of scholarship, to foster the spirit of brotherhood in our vocation and toinsure social and cultural unity, do promote our organization to the fulfillment of these
ideals.
As always, there is much to look forward to. We have 13 new move ins, each of which
has high amounts of leadership potenal. Aer losing a signicant number of members to
graduaon, we are currently sing at 23 members. We can more than double that come
winter quarter when we put our new guys through. In addion, we have put into place some
new grade regulaons. Unfortunately, due to dicult classes, we have slipped back to the
middle of the pack. We have devised a study tables strategy in order to promote our grades
and get back up on top.
We are also furthering our involvement
in the Greek community. Right from the get go,
we oriented the importance of involvement with
the new guys. This will connue to help us as we
exceed expectaons with the community. With
Ausn as VP of scholarship, our involvement with our council has skyrocketed. It will connue
with the possibility of geng the presidenal posion within IFC. There is an intense race
ahead, but President Dave Dziak is looking to run. There is no guarantee that he will get it, yet,
we have not had such ambion for leadership quite as strong as what we have now. Look
forward to the next Echo to nd out the results.
With all of the hard work our acve members and potenal new members have putin, there is no queson that we as an organizaon will succeed. The only queson is how long
it will take, and how high of posions we will take both on campus, and in the real world come
graduaon. This group of men has done more over the past year than Ive seen some
fraternies due over the course of their history. It is a very excing me here at DTS, and we
are extremely proud of our accomplishments, though we will not stop unl we are the
premiere organizaon on campus. Look forward to the next Echo to nd out how far weve
come! As always, if there are any quesons or concerns, feel free to contact us. Our contact
