Tyros turn heads in front of and behind the camera

under 30the oscarseye on

Growing up with OscarBy SHARON KNOLLE

scar rarely rewards rookieswith a statuette, but the Academy of Motion Pic-ture Arts & Sciences is age-blind when it comes to certain

categories.More than 200 actors and actresses

under 30 have scored an Oscar nomina-tion since 1929, but breaking the age bar-rier as a writer or director is muchtougher. Only a handful of helmers hasdone so, but many who did, includingOrson Welles, John Singleton and M.Night Shyamalan, scored a writing nom-ination at the same time.

At 26, Welles shared the originalscreenplay Oscar for “Citizen Kane.”Two guys who penned their way to thesame award, Matt Damon, 27, and BenAffleck, 25, won for “Good Will Hunting.”(Damon was also an actor contender.)

In 1990, Steven Soderbergh wasgiven a screenplay nod by the Academyfor “sex, lies, and videotape,” but he

fared better at the Independent SpiritAwards, who handed him the directoraward for the film — a full 10 years be-fore he took home an Oscar for direct-ing “Traffic.”

The Oscars have routinely recognizedyoung actors: Marlon Brando, Mont-gomery Clift, James Dean, NatalieWood, Shirley MacLaine, Leonardo Di-Caprio and River Phoenix all landedOscar nominations at a young age. Sev-eral winners have even been under 20,including Tatum O’Neal, Anna Paquinand Patty Duke.

Among the more than 20 women towin the actress statuette before hittingthe 30 are Katharine Hepburn, BetteDavis, Ingrid Bergman and Jodie Foster.

Adrien Brody, at 29, set the record in2002 for youngest best actor winner.Timothy Hutton, at 20, nabbed a sup-porting actor trophy for “Ordinary Peo-ple.” Just getting a nomination is quite afeat for men under 30: The ratio of femaleto male nominees under 30 is approxi-mately 4-to-1. Among the men rating a

rare early nom are Gregory Peck, AlbertFinney, Robert Downey Jr. and EdwardNorton.

Still, other awards shows have often beaten the Academy to the punch.Tom Cruise was nominated for a 1983Golden Globe for “Risky Business,” sixyears before his first Oscar mention, for“Born on the Fourth of July.” A year be-fore getting an Oscar nom for 1989’s“Steel Magnolias,” Julia Roberts re-ceived an Indie Spirit mention for “Mys-tic Pizza.”

The Independent Spirit Awards, which were founded in 1985, have alwaysbeen perceived as hipper and edgier than the Oscars. They were the first torecognize future Oscar winners ReneeZellweger, Nicolas Cage and Benicio Del Toro and such future Oscar nomineesas Queen Latifah, Laura Dern and ChloeSevigny.

If the Spirit Awards are on the edge, the Golden Globes are right in the main-stream, honoring such talent as JohnnyDepp, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst and

Nicole Kidman long before they receivedattention from the Academy.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards oc-casionally single out actors who aren’trewarded elsewhere, such as DakotaFanning, Hayden Christensen and NoahTaylor. Kate Winslet won a SAG Actorfor “Sense and Sensibility,” but is so far0-for-3 at the Oscars.

Young thesps who’ve won at theBAFTA Awards but struck out else-where include Jamie Bell, who beat outsuch heavyweights as Russell Crowe towin for 2000’s “Billy Elliott,” and Scar-lett Johansson, a double nominee in 2003who took home the BAFTA for “Lost inTranslation” (she also was nominated for“Girl With a Pearl Earring”).

Sometimes fresh young faces likeAudrey Hepburn are rewarded right offthe bat (1954’s “Roman Holiday”). Butwhen it comes to taking home theawards, you usually have to pay yourdues — even if your name is StevenSpielberg or Julia Roberts.

GREEN GOLD: Clockwise from top left, Tatum O’Neal cradles her trophy for “Paper Moon,” Audrey Hepburn sheds a happy tear for her “Roman Holiday” win, Adrien Brody holds aloft his Oscar for “The Pianist” and Anna Paquin looks happy and surprised with her statuette for “The Piano.”
