11DEMOCRACY BOOTCAMP 2018

CIVIX is a non-partisan, national registered charity dedicated to building the skills and habits of active and engaged citizenship among young Canadians. Our vision is a strong and inclusive democracy where all young people are ready, willing and able to participate.

CIVIX provides authentic learning opportunities to help young Canadians practice their rights and responsibilities as citizens, and connect with their democratic institutions. Instead of studying about democracy from a textbook, they experience it first-hand with real issues in real-time.

Student VoteStudent Vote is a parallel election for students under the voting age, that coincides with actual federal, provincial/territorial and municipal elections. Students learn about government and the electoral process, research the parties and platforms, discuss relevant issues and participate in an authentic vote for local election candidates. The results are shared with news media for broadcast and publication.

NewsWiseNewsWise is a news literacy program to provide school-aged Canadians an understanding of the role of journalism in a healthy democracy and the tools to find and filter information online. CIVIX will be collaborating with Canadian Journalism Foundation to develop the project, with support from Google Canada. The program will be a part of the Student Vote campaign, rolling out to coincide with the Ontario provincial election in 2018, and other upcoming local and provincial elections, culminating nationally with the 2019 federal election.

Student Budget ConsultationThe Student Budget Consultation is a civic education and financial literacy initiative that directly involves students in the government budget consultation process. Students learn about government revenues and expenditures, and debate spending priorities before offering opinions on the upcoming budget. Those opinions are recorded in a survey and the results are shared with the government and media.

Rep DayRep Day connects students with their locally elected representatives providing a unique dialogue and exchange of ideas on current issues. The initiative aims to break down the stereotypes that young people have of politicians and the political process, replacing them with an appreciation and sense of trust in the people and institutions within our democracy.

Democracy BootcampDemocracy Bootcamp is a professional development conference for teachers designed to improve their democratic engagement and instructional capacity. By sharing an insider’s look at campaigns, exploring research and trends, and introducing new tools for civic education, Democracy Bootcamp expands teachers’ comprehension and interest in Canadian democracy.

Democracy Bootcamp has been made possible by the generous support of the Government of Ontario:
