Readiness and Support
Our firm is buying all of our desktops/laptops with a Windows
Professional OEM operating system, why do I have Windows Upgrade on my
agreement?
• OEM is only way for full version
• All Volume Licensing is Upgrade Only
• Add Software Assurance for additional features and benefits
• Ability to add on options such as MDOP and Companion Licensing
We only upgrade to a new version of the OS when a
machine is replaced. Imaging machines is a pain!
We have to manually add applications,
re-enter keycodes, etc. What a mess!
Reimage Rights Microsoft allows you to use a VL key to reimage OEM machines as long as the media pack used is exactly the same as the OEM sticker provided with the machine.

• OEM can downgrade back one version
• Software Assurance allow unlimited downgrading
Application Virtualization Applications are centrally hosted and running on Windows servers and users can remotely interact with the applications or a server session. You can present just applications or you can provide a server OS Session which could give the end-user the look and feel of a desktop OS experience.

Key Questions When determining the licensing requirements for a given scenario, make sure you can answer these key questions about the user, device, and the location.
Is the device covered by a CAL Suite on a per-device basis?
Qualified MS OS?
Qualified Device or qualified 3rd Party device?
Accessing VDI?
Employee Owned or Corporate Owned?
Will the user access the software on the corporate premises (on site)?
Will the user access the software remotely from outside of the corporate premises (off-site)?
Is the user covered by a CAL Suite on a per-user basis?
Is the user the single primary user* of the device?
Can the organization easily identify the primary user of the device?
User Device Location
* “Primary user” means the user who uses the device more than 50% of the time in any 90 day period
Bringing a tablet device not running Windows to work
Firm allows employees to buy tablet devices that are not capable of running Windows 8 Pro (i.e. iPad, Android, Windows Surface RT, etc.) and bring them to work.
Firm considers the device to be secondary (Companion) device to the user’s primary device at work.
Users can access email only on these devices via Outlook Web App (OWA). Do not use Outlook messaging or collaboration clients.
Corporate policy does not permit delivering a VDI to these devices.

Working Remotely – with SA
The user is working remotely with their own PC or a public terminal.
User is connected to a Windows 7 Pro virtual machine (VM) using VDI Technology via a web browser.
Every user in the organization is licensed with the Enterprise CAL Suite
The Windows OS and Office Pro Plus licenses for the user’s primary work device are covered by Software Assurance.
The home device is a third-party device and not managed by the organization, so it is not a “qualified device” under the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (EA).

Bring your own PC – Remote Access
The organization has decided not to buy the employees PCs.
Users choose their own device, buy it, and bring it to work. Users also use the device when working from home.
Users require capabilities for Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and Lync Server on their devices.
The company wants a licensing approach that will work on any device a user chooses. Licensing Simplicity is a key requirement.

Office 365 Plan E3 + Bridge CAL
Office 365 Pro Plus Microsoft now offers Office Pro Plus as a subscription via Office 365. Some things to know…
Can install on up to 15 devices:
• 5 rich desktops/laptops/VDI, and
• 5 tablets, and
• 5 phones
• Corporate or Personally Owned
O365 keeps track of the installs and notifies the user if they are over the limit.
Replaces Home Use Rights Program
Must set up O365 account to take advantage of multiple installs.
Can locally install – Click to run is best
No downgrade rights to previous versions.
Can run side by side with existing perpetual licensing rights.
Qualifying Operating Systems
Microsoft lists the qualifying operating systems on the Product List which is updated monthly and can be downloaded here.
The Teleworker
As part of a telework initiative, users split their time between working in the office and working from home.
All users are issued corporate notebooks and are required to use them for business purposes.
Users will store data locally on their devices. Corporate security requires a solution to secure this data in case a users device is lost or stolen. This constitutes management of the device, which requires that the device be covered by the EA.

+ MDOP
The Road Warrior
Users are highly mobile and travel 80 percent of the time to visit customers or other locations and work from home the remainder of the time.
Users provide their own desktop PC or notebook
Users do not want to overwrite the image on their personal PC or notebook with a corporate image.
Corporate security requires that company data remains segregated from personal OS
Running Windows 8 Enterprise from a USB Stick via Windows To Go is the preferred solution.
