SASS RECOGNITION WEEK 29/8 This week has been SASS Recognition Week. This gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the hard work that our support staff do and to recognise the invaluable role that they play in the support of students and teachers. I would like to acknowledge all of the following staff: Lisa Wishart our School Administrative Manager. Katrina Taylor, Lonni Grimwood and Marie Robinson who keep the Front Office running Karen Driver in Science Lisa Fitzpatrick in the Library Paula Parsons in Home Economics Russell Roussac our Farm Assistant Terry Taylor our General Assistant Catherine Werner who looks after Henry Street Office and all of the first aid requirements of the students Renee Beehag, Jill Jeffrey, Terri-Anne Moodie, Robyn Marshall, Helen Mills, Shane Moorse, Jake Parsons, Stacey Salusalu, Shannon Williams, Boddie Arthur and Belinda Batchelor who do such a great job supporting our students. A big thank you goes to each of these people for all of the work that they do for Deniliquin High School. HSC TRIAL EXAMS Last week our Year 12 students were involved in their Trial HSC Exams. These exams are an important aspect of their preparation for the HSC which begins on the 13 th October with the English Exam. The Trial Exams also double as a major part of the students’ assessment. Hopefully these exams will provide a boost for those students who have been studying throughout the year and will provide all students with some valuable feedback on areas that they can focus on between now and October 13 th . HSC MARKING External Marking of HSC projects and performance exams is upon us. Tuesday saw the examiners arrive at Deniliquin High to mark the Industrial Technology Major Works. Students have produced a variety of projects including a bed head and tables. September 14 th will be a busy day for marking with the Design and Technology projects being marked as well as the examiners being here for the music performance exam. We wish all those students who will be performing all the best and good luck to those who are having projects marked. NAPLAN RESULTS Parents of Year 7 and Year 9 students should have received their NAPLAN results in the mail. These results are one aspect of our assessment of students and it is used to identify strengths and weaknesses and will allow us as a school to set goals in literacy and numeracy. We use the results to review what we are doing in the school and to target support where it is most needed and to also identify students who require greater challenges. Our Year 9 students achieved significant growth across a range of areas. Our growth in the areas of Reading and Numeracy was above that of the rest of the state. Our Year 7 students had strong growth in the area of Grammar and Punctuation. As a community of schools in Deniliquin we are sharing our results to try to identify common areas for improvement and the Stage 3 and 4 teachers are working together to improve the learning outcomes for all students on their journey from Kindergarten through to Year 12. NEW FURNITURE This week our Year 11 Construction class have been assembling and installing our new outdoor furniture. This furniture removes the risk that was associated with the sharp edges from the old green tables that have been in the playground. It is anticipated that by the end of the week all 30 tables will be installed and in use. SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS Congratulations to our junior boy’s football team for making it through to the final two public schools in the Swan Shield. They will now travel over to Albury in a few weeks’ time to take on Albury High and two private schools. Well done to our Open Girls Netball Team who competed earlier this week in the State Carnival. While the results didn’t go our way their efforts were amazing and they were fantastic ambassadors for Deniliquin High. SCHOOL CAPTAINS It is that time of the year where voting for School Captains will occur. Inside this newsletter, on pages 2 and 3, you will find the candidates for the position. This is an important position within the school and I congratulate all those students who have put up their hands to become a part of the process and to be willing to take on this leadership role within our school. ENGLISH Students have been very productive in English over the last couple of weeks, submitting assignments and completing their Trial HSC exams. All junior year groups are now moving onto their new units of study and Years 11 and 12 are in serious revision mode. Teachers would like to remind Year 12 students that they should be implementing the feedback from their exams in this critical time before the HSC exams. Year 10 is transitioning from Shakespearean Drama to their final unit in which they will study the representation of Justice in a range of texts. This will be facilitated by their viewing of a play in Week 8, Jasper Jones, in Melbourne. Some students will study this novel as their prescribed text in their next unit and it is a fantastic opportunity for them to view a live theatre performance. Thank you to Mrs Ladson for her organisation of the excursion.

STUDENT GALLERY This edition of the Student Gallery comes to you from Year 7, who has been studying a novel in class. They have written about a significant experience in their novel from a different perspective. Hatchet – Brian’s father waiting at the airport to see him. I raced to the airport to see my son, thinking about the things he and I could do when he arrived. But as every hour passed, I started to wonder if he had even boarded the plane. It was getting darker by the minute, it felt like the sun had disappeared forever. By Bradley, 7Yellow Parvana – Parvana’s father being imprisoned by the Taliban. He was taken to a dark cell, full of nightmares and webs. The roommate was no friend of his. There was water all over the floor like something had exploded. The food they fed him tasted like fertilizer. His leg never stopped bothering him; it was like a brown bear was ripping it to shreds. By Harriet, 7Yellow He heard laughter and that was the last thing he could remember before he found himself on the ground with two Taliban soldiers, one on each side, tugging at his arms. Mohammed was amazed at the cooperation the Taliban used to rifle through their personal belongings. They threw him into a cell. “Punishment,” the Talib guard said, “punishment.” He sunk slowly into the darkness of his cell, wishing that he was invisible, wondering what his family were doing and how they were coping. Did they get taken by the Taliban and separated? How would they survive with no food? He thought of the worst things. By Sophie, 7Yellow Wind in the Willows – Toad’s addiction to driving. Oh the joy, the beauty of driving this magnificent car!

In this I am Toad the Terror, the Lord of the Lone Rail. Oh, how the fresh, crisp air feels against my skin, the roar of the engine music to my ears. I shall never wake up from this wonderful dream. As the old country buildings give way to lush green paddocks, I let the speed climb. I will show them! I will show Badger he was wrong, I will show Ratty he can’t lock me up and I will show Mole what potential this vehicle holds. I grip the steering wheel harder, making the leather squeak. By Kim, 7Yellow

DEBATING Debating has wrapped up for another year and, once again, students have been extremely successful in their endeavours. The Year 9/10 team was recently crowned Riverina champions, facing off against worthy opponents Oxley High School in Armidale this week as part of the State Finals series. Unfortunately, the girls were narrowly defeated despite presenting a convincing case for abolishing Australia Day. As part of their District final, the students were eligible for selection in a development team. Tallulah McKenzie was successful and will now represent the Riverina region in Sydney in November. Our junior team performed admirably in their final debate against Barham, emerging victorious after persuading the adjudicator that parents should only allow their children to watch TV on weekends. Unfortunately, the tough competition in their group this year means they will not proceed to the next round.

NEWS FROM THE STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICER – TRACEY PAGE On Tuesday 9

th August, Judy Dougherty, Kylie

Barker and myself took a group of Year 9 and 10 students to the Youth Mental Health Forum in Albury. The main focus of the day was the mental health and wellbeing of all young people. It brought together student representatives from around 20 high schools in the region and connected them to mental health professionals and local service providers. It enabled an exchange of information, experience and ideas. One of the aims for the day was to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues. Students explored how the wellbeing of all students within their school could be improved and supported. Students were encouraged to create their own youth committees to further promote the message within their own school and community and plan for future events and projects around youth mental health and wellbeing. Since returning the group have started the MAD Squad (Make A Difference). They also have come up with some great ideas to reduce the stigma associated with Mental Health both at Deniliquin High and in the community. On Tuesday 16

th August, Mrs Hay and myself took

the NAIDOC Debate team to Albury to compete at the next level of competition. The topic was “Traditional Songlines should be maintained.” Our team had the negative side, it was a very difficult topic for the students to tackle. The team came up with some excellent arguments on the topic. They did not win the debate and will not get to compete at the next level. Zara Lindeman, Bella Hammond, Thalia Ennor and Tiarna Condren all did an exceptionally well job and they are to be congratulated for their efforts.

THE MAD SQUAD On Tuesday 9

th August a group of us went to the

Youth Mental Health Forum in Albury. We learned about how to help the community and the school in creating positive mental health initiatives. Over 20 schools from the region attended the forum. Charlie Cooper from Headspace National talked about his experiences of anxiety, how he overcame them and gained strength from those around him, and he is now a guest speaker for Headspace touring Australia. During the forum Finley High and Albury High presented about what initiatives they have successfully brought into their schools. We have now started a group called MAD Squad. Mad is an acronym for “Make A Difference”. The aim of the MAD Squad is to organise activities around the school to bring about positive mental health. During the forum we had a chance to write down some ideas about what we could do around Deni High. This is just a few of our ideas that we came up with but nothing has been approved by the Principal yet, so they are just ideas. MAD Squad Facebook page, Positivity Tree, Pay it forward, free dress days, festivals, fun school activities

We are getting a MAD Squad noticeboard that will be put in Henry Office area for students to be aware of what we are doing and planning around the school. This is just the beginning of the effects the MAD Squad will have on the school. So if you have a great idea to promote positive mental health in our school bring your ideas to one of us and we will take it to a MAD meeting. Thanks to Tracey Page, Judy Dougherty and Ms Barker for taking us. Bella Hammond, Olivia Duffey, Ben Blenkiron, Bethany Mills, Bella Gow, Jorja Austin and Tyler Rosendale.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS On Saturday the 20

th August at 6:30am, two teams

went down to Shepparton to compete in Tournament of Minds. We left quite early, which meant we had a bit of time for rehearsals but we were still nervous. Social Science competed first and went quite well. The topic for Social Science was two objects that look the same but act different and the approach that the social science team took was that twins that look the same but act different. The day went on and then it was time for the Language Literature team to perform. Their challenge was to make a gathering for book /movie / song or animated character. They made all the characters from a different book, movie and or song and made the gathering to be for a band practise. We have been practising for the last sports block as well as afterschool and weekends. Language literature came runners up and Social Science came 1

st meaning they go onto state on the

4th September. A big thanks to Bec Strong for taking

the props down and another thanks to Jodie Blenkiron for taking some students down to Shepparton. I would like to give a big thank you to Mrs Jansen for being our coach, organising the teams, staying after school and on weekends to help out, also supplying materials to make props and supplying snacks.

TAS NEWS YEAR 12 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY (TIMBER) The Year 12 Timber class have finished their Major Projects after months of planning and hard work. All four projects completed by Matthew Macdonald, Sam Young, Braden Leech and Tate Parsons display a variety of highly technical design elements and skills. These projects use a variety of recycled timbers as well as hardwoods to create majestic pieces of furniture. The students should be very proud of their efforts. I wish them all the best with their results but no matter the outcome these are projects they can keep forever and enjoy the use they will have from them. Mr Blake (Teacher)

YEAR 11 COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES On Thursday 11

th August the Community and Family

Studies class visited the Deniliquin Preschool. They conducted observations of types of play children take part in and gender differences in communication. The next day they visited a Year 8 PASS class to conduct a data based observation task. They observed the interactions between the teacher and the students and created a tally board. Both observational activities will be useful skills for undertaking their first assessment task in Year 12, the Independent Research Project.

YEAR 9/10 CHILD STUDIES On Thursday 11

th August, the Child Studies class as

lucky enough to have a visit from a midwife, Rebecca Sides. Rebecca spoke to the students about ante-natal care which complemented the student’s current studies on pregnancy. In four weeks’ time the class will visit the midwifery unit of the hospital which will be a great learning tool! We also had a visit from Ellie McGrath on Thursday 18

th August, who is expecting her baby in November.

She provided a great insight into her pregnancy experience so far and outlined to the students her birth plan. This was perfect timing as we are starting to study birth over the next few weeks. We are very appreciative of the time that members of our community give us to help the TAS Faculty teach our courses to the best of our ability! Mrs Jenkins TAS Head Teacher

LOTE - FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD - CIBO CIBO GLORIOSO Year 7 LOTE is having a marvellous time exploring

the food culture of Italy. Last week students across

Year 7 were lucky enough to sample the home

delight that is gnocchi. For many students this was

the first time they had encountered these delicious

creamy morsels of potato. Ms Sinha demonstrated

the recipe for each class and with trepidation of the

unfamiliar students sampled and quickly became

converts of this Northern Italian staple.

Gnocchi with Garlic Cream Sauce

4 rashers of bacon thinly sliced

3 spring onions thinly sliced (including green part)

2 cloves garlic, minced

500ml cream

Salt & pepper to taste

1-2 tablespoons oil

Place oil to heat in frying pan. Shake in pepper and

then add bacon. Fry for a couple of minutes until the

bacon starts taking colour. At this point add one of

the cloves of garlic and as it fries and starts sticking

add the spring onion. Fry for a moment then add the

cream. Mix and unstick the bits of bacon and garlic

at bottom of pan. Add the other clove of garlic and

stir through thoroughly.

Once the cream has started to bubble a little add the

cooked gnocchi to the sauce. The gnocchi will

absorb some of the sauce and help thicken it. Once

the gnocchi increases in size it is ready to serve.

This sauce can be made and used with other pastas

too. Enjoy!

2016 NETBALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS –

BENDIGO

The Year 9/10 team started the day with a draw to Moama Grammar, by the end they were able to take away 2 wins against Wedderburn college and 3 loses. They played six 14 minute games all working hard and combining well together. With 11 players, the girls rotated through many different positions and enjoyed the tough competition. Standout players on the day were Leah Blake, Kate McCalman and Georgia Denny. The Year 7/8 team had a successful day with only the 3 losses and 7 wins. They finished second out of the six teams. All girls gave their best and played well as a team. The standout players on the day were Ella, Emma, Steph and Georgina. It was a great effort overall and a big thank you is to go to Miss Gallagher and Ms Barker for their coaching and driving us to the tournament.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH – PRACTICE HIKE Throughout the course of the year, 14 Deniliquin High School students have been working towards achieving the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which involves four areas of commitment; skill, service, physical recreation and adventurous journey. The purpose of the award is to challenge and develop individuals to become well-rounded members of the community. On the 25

th of August, our students embarked on a

journey into the depths of Gulpa Island on their practice hike. Each individual was required to carry all of their equipment and clothing for the two days, including tents, food and water. The group hiked close to 20 kilometres which put their training and preparation to the test. The aim of the practice hike is to educate and prepare students for their adventurous journey, where they will receive no assistance with camp craft, navigation and packing. All students are to be commended on their behaviour and willingness to learn and help each other. The qualifying hike will take place in the Grampians National Park in early Term 4.
