Paediatric Dental Care – The Team Determines Success

Dr Daniel Ford BDSc (Hons), BSc (Hons), MDSc (Paed), FRACDS

Paediatric Dentistry is an incredibly challenging specialty and the performance of the team is critical for success. In the paediatric world, the dental assistant is called upon to be a leader in their field. Of course this expertise is centred around the hands-on aspects of treatment but there are other areas that are equally important.

The value of a dental assistant who has a deep understanding of the various dental and medical conditions and diagnoses that present in paediatrics is immeasurable in assisting with care, triage, and communication. Coupled with this, the dental assistant who has skills in behaviour management is a critical member of any paediatric team.

This presentation looks at dental assisting in paediatric dentistry, covering the significant conditions and treatments that are encountered, paediatric dental trauma, and behaviour management. There will be a strong focus on the paediatric team, and how the dental assistant can play a pivotal role in this team.

Holistic Dentistry and Health

Dr Rachel Hall Dentist B.Ch.D (Uni Leeds UK) LDSRCS (Eng), MACNEM

What is holistic dentistry and what makes it different from traditional dentistry? This presentation will look at the issues surrounding dental amalgam, fluoride and root canal therapy. It will also pose the following questions - Gum disease and tooth decay are systemic illnesses so what role does diet and lifestyle play in our oral health? Can dentistry care for the patient and the environment – how green is your dental practice?

Meeting the challenges of Oral Health for Older People

Professor Florian Mack Graduation Dr. Med. Dent (Doctor of Dental Science)

Gerodontology is a new specialization within oral health. Demographic changes towards an increase of elderly people within the population of industrialised countries make this topic more important. Maintaining a high number of natural teeth amongst all age groups is one of the aims in oral health. Tooth loss is not only caused by caries and periodontal diseases but is also associated with medical, socio-economic and psycho social factors. Therefore different strategies in oral hygiene, dental care and treatment, need to be developed and applied.

TMJ and Facial Pain – A Physio Perspective

Kerry Read Physiotherapist

By applying the physiotherapist’s everyday knowledge of joints and muscles, we will de-mystify the world of TMJ and facial pain – arming you with tips and tricks to make life easier for your patients, both in and out of the dental chair.

Drug Interactions and Adverse Reactions that Relate to Oral Health

Dr Geraldine Moses BPharm DClinPharm FPS FACP MSHP AACPA MRPharmS

In surveys, ~75% of Australian women and 60% of Australian men report taking at least one medicine regularly. Over 90% of people aged > 75 years take more than one medicine regularly and this is not counting self-medication with vitamins, supplements and herbal remedies.

An enormous array of medicines can have adverse effects that manifest in the oral cavity. In addition many medicines, including natural health products, can interact with the treatments and tools used by dental professionals. This presentation will provide an overview of these issues, and highlight which drugs and medicines dental professionals should watch out for.

The Latest in Hyperbaric Oxygen Use in ORN Treatment and Prevention

Dr Ken Thistlethwaite BSc(Hons) MBBS FRACGP

Since the work of Marx (268 patients with established Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) with 100% resolution) and the Feldmeier review (14 papers, 371 cases with 83.6% success) negative papers from Annane and Gal have created a level of confusion. This presentation will review the latest evidence with respect to treatment and prevention of ORN utilising hyperbaric oxygen therapy as part of a multidisciplinary approach.

Myofunctional Influences on Facial Growth and the Dentition

Dr John Flutter BDS London Dental Surgeon

The growth and development of the face and jaws are determined by the muscle forces acting upon the teeth and jaws. The aetiology of malocclusion is the focus of the lecture. It will indicate what treatment may be required to address the cause of the problem rather than treatment for the crooked teeth which is the result of the problem.
