Definition

Dental Fluorosis is the hypoplasia of the dental enamel resulting from prolonged ingestion of drinking water containing high levels of fluoride, manifested by the condition called Mottled enamel

CAUSES:

Excessive intake of fluoride over an extended period of time

COMMON SOURCES OF FLUORIDES:

Tooth pastesDrinking water in fluoridated communitiesBeverages and food processed with fluoridated water. Dietary prescription supplements that include fluoride (e.g., tablets or drops).

SIGNS

Chalk-like discoloration of teeth with white spots or lines on tooth enamelIn more severe cases the affected areas have a yellow or brown discolorationIn extreme forms Fluorosis may result in a pitted tooth surface

Description of Enamel: • NORMAL-Smooth, glossy,

pale creamy-white translucent surface

• QUESTIONABLE-A few white flecks or white spots

• VERY MILD-Small opaque, paper

white areas covering less than 25% of the tooth surface

• MILD-Opaque white areas covering less than 50% of the tooth surface

• MODERATE-All tooth surfaces affected marked wear on biting surfaces; brown stain may be present

• SEVERE-All tooth surfaces affected; discrete or confluent pitting; brown stain present

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

Enamel hypoplasia

PREVENTION:

Do not use fluoride toothpaste until the child is two years old unless advised to do so by a dentistFor children age two and older, place only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on the toothbrush at each brushingAvoid toothpastes with flavors that may encourage swallowing
