Denture Impressions

Choose correct disposable or metal tray for alginate impression.

Two impressions may need to be taken:•One for the custom tray •One for an opposing model

An assistant, EFDA or hygienist duty

Preliminary impression: Usually Alginate Material

Used to construct a custom tray: Pour a cast and fabricate a custom tray

Types of custom trays: •Acrylic•Hydroplastic•Thermoplastic•Resin (Triad)

Custom tray fabricated to fit the patient’s mouth accurately.

Allows for adequate space for impression material with out being too large to compromise stability

An assistant, EFDA or hygienist duty

Final impression taken by the doctor.In PA only the doctor may perform this procedure

Can use ZOE only if arch is edentulous.Otherwise polysulfide, polyether or PVS may be used.

Wax Bite Rim:Gets tried in the patient’s mouth

Used to establish vertical dimension and location of where teeth are to be placed.

The dentist performs this procedure

Wax try inDenture teeth are inserted in wax

Try in is inserted in the patient’s mouth for fit and esthetic approval. When acceptable the case is sent back to the lab to finish fabrication
