LETTER FROM THE DEPARTMENT HEAD It’s hard to believe that summer is over, and that we are about to embark on a new academic year. I recently returned from the American Accounting Association (AAA) conference in Washington, D.C. I enjoy attending these conferences because I always see good friends, meet new ones and return to my desk refreshed, recharged and full of new ideas. One of the highlights of this year’s conference was learning more about the study released by the Pathways Commission on Accounting Higher Education. For those of you who aren’t familiar, this commission was created in 2010 by the American Institute of CPAs and AAA to investigate ways to enhance the relevance of the accounting education experience. I believe that colleges must prepare students for the accounting field by encouraging three qualities: integrity, analytical skills and a global viewpoint. The department hosts many guest speakers to provide information to prospective accounting students about career options and supports four very active student groups to promote the profession and its diversity. I plan to delve deeper into the report and see how we can support more of the commission’s recommendations in our curriculum. Since our last newsletter a year ago, we’ve had some exciting updates in our department. I’d like to welcome six new members to our Accounting Advisory Board. They are: Duane Amendola, Deanna Byrne, John Culbertson, Robert Grondwaldt, Nancy Gunza and Sheila Van Wicklen. The advisory board has continued to assist the department in enhancing our programs to benefit our students, faculty and business community. We appreciate the time and effort of these individuals, and you can learn more about our board members elsewhere in this newsletter. Last November, we hosted our second CPE seminar for alumni and friends of the department. Cynthia Fornelli from the Center of Audit Quality highlighted the seminar with her discussion on the change in the role of the auditor. Dr. Anthony Curatola was the moderator for our alumni panel that discussed “Hot Topics in Taxation.” This year we are planning a series of breakfast meetings to be held throughout the year in different venues. This change was in response to the demand for more opportunities for continuing professional education. We hope you will plan on joining us this year and reconnecting with the department and fellow alumni. And finally, I’d like to congratulate a longtime friend of LeBow College, Carl Hertrich ’71, a retired audit partner at KPMG LLP, who was named the winner of Drexel LeBow’s 2012 Alumni Award. Carl has received many professional awards throughout the years and has made many great contributions to our field. We are grateful for his professionalism, knowledge and selfless service to both the accounting field and LeBow.

Dr. ChanG featUreD In Market Street In the article, ”Accounting for Happiness” in the Spring/Summer issue of Market Street, Hsihui Chang was featured for his volunteer work with the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, a nonprofit charity organization that sends volunteers—including his wife –on missions around the world. Chang’s volunteerism also includes working for the Bethesda Project whose mission is to care for the abandoned poor. On the second Saturday of each month, Chang and a team of Tzu Chi volunteers prepare and serve food in a homeless shelter.

NEW ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS

StaCY kLIne, CPA: Reading is my favorite escape. My choices tend to be from the historical fiction and science fiction/fantasy genres. I also like to discuss books with my teen daughters; we read The Maze Runner this summer. Recently, I finished the Game of Thrones books and am anxiously awaiting the next in the series. On my list next is Stephen King’s 11/22/63…already on my Kindle!

BarBara GreIn, Ph.D.: I just finished reading Princeps by L. E. Modesitt, Jr. and started The Columbus Affair by Steve Berry. After that, I will probably read a detective story, either by Lee Child or Dick Francis.

hUBert GLoVer, Ph.D.: I spent my summer teaching and found time to read more mystery books and also learn more about my new toy the iPad 3 and iMatch where I now have more than 30,000 songs in the clouds.

anthonY CUratoLa, Ph.D.: I am hoping to finish a book that I started over the Christmas holidays and did not get very far in reading, called Splinter Cell: Conviction by Tom Clancy. I also hope to read a book on tax cheating that I received from Don Morris who authored the book. It should be quite entertaining.

BernharD reIChert, Ph.D.: I read articles on self-evaluation, articles on honesty and articles on subjective performance evaluation for research. I also read Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale to Oliver, my 10-month old son.

JennIfer WrIGht, CPA: A colleague gave me Linchpin, Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin a few months ago, so I read that over the summer. I was also excited for the new John Grisham book that came out this summer — great beach reading.

FACULTY NEWS

What WaS on YoUr SUmmer reaDInG LISt?

In memorY of profeSSor CaS SrInIVaSanThe LeBow community recently lost a highly respected member of our faculty, Cas Srinivasan. Srinivasan was an accounting professor who served as department head from 1978 to 1986 and

retired from LeBow in 1988. He was an unassuming person who built a very strong department. When recruiting outstanding additions to the faculty, he always insisted on hiring applicants who would be collegial, supportive mentors of junior faculty and Ph.D. students. Srinivasan was always very helpful and enjoyed mentoring younger faculty members. He and his best friend and fellow professor, John Savchak, owned Phillies’ season tickets for seats behind home plate. Everyone always knew that they were loyal Phillies fans, as they knew about Srinivasan’s passion for teaching and his dedication to his students.

In memorY of aLan BerGerWe are saddened of the loss of Alan Berger, an adjunct professor of taxation at Drexel for 35 years, who passed away in early August. He was a tax lawyer for the IRS for 53 years and served as president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Treasury Employees Union. Berger taught Tax Practice and Procedures within

the department. Students always enjoyed Berger’s stories from his experiences working tax cases with the IRS. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Fish Berger; his son, Adam; his daughters, Lisa Baskin and Andrea; and his four grandchildren.

NETWORKING ROADMAP

For my last and final accounting co-op at Drexel, I was hired at Johnson & Johnson, supporting McNeil Nutritionals and McNeil Consumer Healthcare in the Operations Finance department. My primary responsibilities consist of business partner support and inventory support for both segments. Thus far, it has been an opportunity of a lifetime. My ultimate goal is to be brought back full time in J & J’s prestigious Leadership Development Program, which in time after graduating the program, would secure me with a full time position with one of the best companies to work for in the world.

I am a graduating Accounting and Finance student. Drexel has provided me the opportunity to advance my career and experience diversity. Fortunately through my work study at the Lebow UG Programming office, I have learned from alumnae, Katherine Crawford, the tradition of success Lebow graduates achieve. I am excited for this year and hope to continue the tradition of success.

After my MBA graduation from Drexel in June 2010, I joined Johnson & Johnson’s Financial Leadership Development Program (FLDP). The LeBow connections continued at J&J when I encountered Alex who is currently our operations finance co-op and Alyse Schongold who is doing her third co-op at Johnson & Johnson but is a bit farther away in Raynham, Mass. While Drexel is a large school, its relationships like these that make it feel much smaller even as a community reaching outside of campus bounds. As we look to this new academic year, I wish Alyse and Alex the best in their roles as Beta Alpha Psi officers. The organization will be in good hands as I know they will lead excellent events to help foster an even stronger interest among students in accounting, finance and MIS.

As an intern at PwC, I got selected to go on a community service trip to Belize for a week. While I was there I taught financial literacy to children from the age of 8 to 12, who went to low income schools. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to inspire the children to learn.

During the spring term, Dianna served as a tutor for “lab” in principles of accounting which provides extra help for students in the introductory accounting course. As the instructor of record, I serve as the administrator, but all of the assistance is provided by junior and senior accounting students. Dianna was an awesome role model for our incoming students and she was notified during class about her trip to Belize. Very exciting! The Grant Thornton Presidential

Symposium in Boston was a great networking experience and an amazing opportunity to learn more about Grant Thornton and Beta Alpha Psi, since all the students attending were part of the society. One of the most interesting sessions was held by John E. Mulvaney, Jr. the Boston Office Director of Forensic and Valuation Services practice who explained to us about what he does and how we can become effective leaders.

I began working as a tax co-op at Grant Thornton in the fall of 2005. I completed all three of my co-ops with Grant Thornton and joined the firm full-time after graduation. Due to the success I experienced with the co-op program, it was important to me as a full-time employee to play an active role in Grant Thornton’s co-op recruitment process at Drexel. Currently I support the co-op program by going back to campus to share my co-op experience with current students, who are looking for advice and insight into their future options. My support of the co-op program does not end on-campus as I am actively involved in working closely with those Drexel co-op students who have been hired by the firm.

This year our firm hosted an office visit for first-year accounting students. A connection to students at all stages of their education is extremely valuable and I enjoy hearing that a small connection, such as an office visit, inspired them to become an accountant. I really enjoy when they are inspired to work for our firm.

Students network and make connections with our alumni in various roles during their tenure at LeBow. This roadmap outlines some of the connections made by students and alumni. Connections enrich student success but as you can read they enrich our alumni as well.

It’S the top! If you’ve set foot on campus lately, you will have noticed the tremendous headway made on the new 12-floor LeBow College of Business building. It’s set to be move-in ready by fall of 2013. Last month, the University held a ceremonial milestone “topping out” ceremony to celebrate raising the final beam on the project. “We are so excited to be closer to having our new home,” said Frank Linnehan, Ph.D. interim dean. “We already have great momentum, and once we get all of LeBow College into this incredible building, look out!”
