When you arrive at Sheffield you will quickly become immersed in a wealth of opportunities to hear your music performed in the many workshops and concerts running throughout the year given by student and professional performers. Our composition staff are all established composers whose music is heard around the world and who love to share their professional expertise with students. We aim to foster an environment in which you can explore a wide range of musical genres, from choir and orchestra to film, mixed media, noise, glitch and multi-channel outputs. Above all, we aim to equip you with excellent creative skills while helping you develop your own musical voice. Modules From your first week at Sheffield you will be playing your own compositions in ensembles mentored by experienced composers. First year students take part in a Composition Away Day, and are introduced to studio and instrumental composition. You can then choose from the following modules at Levels 2 and 3: Intermediate Composition Creative Applications of Music Technology Collaboratory Project Orchestral Techniques Composition Portfolio Extended Composition Portfolio Composition Career opportunities Composers graduating from Sheffield have gone on to be professional composers, academics and teachers. Composers and musicians are highly sought after for their transferable skills in IT and other problem-solving areas. Postgraduate opportunities We offer an excellent range of postgraduate taught and re- search degrees, including the MA in Composition, MA in Sonic Arts, MMus and PhD. Staff activities Dorothy Ker has been commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra. Recently, she has been working with oboist Christopher Redgate, who has designed a new oboe ‘for the 21st Century’. Adrian Moore has three discs of music on the Empreintes DIGITALes label and has published a textbook on electroacoustic composition called ‘Sonic Art: Recipes and Reasonings’, available from the sound studio web pages www.sheffield.ac.uk/usss George Nicholson has worked for the BBC and has composed concertos for James Galway and Moray Welsh. He has recently written two works for Sarah Watts in conjunction with her research project on bass clarinet multiphonics. Adam Stansbie has received numerous composition awards and commissions, and his music has been performed throughout the world. His music has been published on numerous labels, with a solo album on the Sargasso label.
