Annual Report 2013-2014 Department of Civil Engineering

1. Introduction The Department of Civil Engineering with its multifaceted faculty continues to maintain and cultivate its strong links with the building and construction industry and academic and research institutions both within and outside the country. Besides high quality teaching and instruction at both UG and PG levels, the Department is actively involved in basic and applied research and consultancy and provides high quality technical advisory support through various R & D projects and consultancy to various organizations. The department has attracted significant amount of sponsored research funding from government and private agencies. 2. Academic Programmes The Department of Civil Engineering offers broad-based undergraduate B.Tech degree programme. A dual degree (B.Tech-M.Tech) programme is also run in structural engineering. Postgraduate M.Tech (admissions through GATE/sponsorships) and PhD (through selections/ sponsorships) programmes are offered in the following five specializations: Transportation Systems Engineering Geotechnical Engineering Water Resources Engineering Structural Engineering Geodesy and Remote Sensing Ocean Engineering This year, 217 (117 B.Tech, 60 M.Tech and 40 Ph.D) students were admitted in the above specializations. This leads to a overall of 716 students on roll in the Civil Engineering Department (B.Tech-454, M.Tech-104, Ph.D-158). This year overall 135 students graduated from the Department, the degrees are as follows:

3. Significant Awards / Distinctions Choudhury D Visiting (Guest) Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Technical University Darmstadt, Germany. June – July 2013.

Inducted as “Member” of core committee of International Building Code (IBC-1803) on ‘Foundations’, which is the national design code of USA. Only non-USA member in this IBC, USA, since April 2013. Eldho T.I Best Lecture Prize for the year 2013 at India Water Works Association (IWWA), Mumbai, by IWWA in the 46th Annual Convention, Bangalore. Jothiprakash V The Union Ministry of Water Resources: Department of Irrigation Prize (Best Paper Award) awarded by Institution of Engineers (India), during the 28th Indian Engineering Congress held at Chennai, on 20th Dec. 2013. R.J. Garde Research Award 2013, awarded by Indian Society for Hydraulics (ISH) Pune, for outstanding research in the field of hydraulics and water resources in the category of Young Scientist, during the HYDRO-2013 international conference held at IIT Madras, Chennai on 4th Dec. 2013. IRCC Industrial Impact Award 2012, awarded by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, during the Teachers day celebration held at IIT Bombay, Mumbai on 5th Sep. 2013. Krishna Rao K.V. CBR International Construction award 2013 by Construction and Business Records Subhimal Gosh National Academy of Science (India) Platinum Jubilee Young Scientist Award 2013 Viswanadham, B.V.S.
