When you first access the class, go into BB and send a test email to make sure that you can receive emails from your BB account. The instructor will officially communicate with you about the class ONLY through your BB email account. Since this is an online class and the only communication is through email, you must check your email daily to stay in communication with the instructor. Make sure that your email in BB is correct by testing it when you access BB the first time this semester. Again, no excuses are accepted for late papers since you have the option of working and posting assignments ahead of schedule. All papers must be complete and posted to pass the course.

Last Day to Drop Course: The last day to drop is published in the course schedule book

Course Requirements:

1) Library Film Reserve RequirementsYou MUST review the 3 classic tapes showing Rogers, Perls, and Ellis doing therapy with a client named Gloria. Include your comments on the tapes in the papers you are writing on these theories. The series of videos are called Three Approaches to Psychotherapy. You MUST also review 5 tapes called Five Approaches to Linda made in 1996 that show demonstrations by more modern therapists. All 8 videos have an external link in BB for viewing. All 8 sessions must be reviewed and commented on in your respective papers. Comment in depth on these 8 demonstrations in your papers and set your comments off as a separate section.

2) These assignments are designed for you to read the entire text books and it is a professional requirement of the class that you do your own work. Any use of anyone else’s work is considered plagiarism, and I will recommend expulsion from the program (see university policy).

3) B Contract Grade: (16) Reflection Papers (3 pages each with 12 pt type, 1 inch margins and double spaced—no 2.5 or 2.75 or 2.9 papers with large font, 2’ margins, extra spacing to drag across the 3 page line please:) posted to Discussion Board. PENALTY FOR LATE PAPERS. Papers that do not meet the minimum criteria will have to be redone and count as a late paper. (You may post papers early to avoid late papers, or if you have internet or BB access problems at the time due for posting, you may send the paper to me by email attachment so it will arrive on time and avoid a penalty, then post the paper on BB when you have access. All papers are to be posted to BB and only emailed to me in cases of emergencies when BB is not available. No penalty for one late reflection paper, but your overall class grade is lowered by one letter grade for EACH late paper beyond one. So you can have a maximum of one late paper to not lower your final grade. A second late paper will drop your overall class grade by one letter. The late paper must be posted within one week from the due date or your overall class grade will drop an additional letter grade for each week that it is late. Papers that do not meet the minimum page requirement and do not address the specific questions outlined on the syllabus for each paper will need to be re-done/re-posted and will count as a late paper. You must complete all papers as a course requirement, to not complete and post all papers is in violation of your contracted grade and will result in failure of the course. All questions must be answered and videos review that are listed for each paper assignment.

Page 4: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

4) A Contract Grade: Beyond fulfilling the B Contract Grade, you must complete a Structured Theoretical Orientation Paper posted to Discussion Board on or before due date. (Each day the paper is late lowers your overall class grade by one letter).

I know that this late paper penalty sounds elementary, but you can not imagine the problems that ensue when students do not receive a penalty for late homework. To avoid pain and suffering for all of us, I have built in severe penalties for late papers and not doing papers. Remember, you can always post the paper early and if you cannot get access due to problems with the internet and/or BB, you can always send me the paper via email attachment to [email protected] to avoid the late penalty, but papers are only sent by email in cases of problems with BB and must be posted asap. Otherwise, I will heartlessly deliver the consequences, don’t take it personal, it’s “just business” The best solution is to always work at least one assignment ahead to avoid panic when the crisis occurs. And the probability is high that you will encounter an emergency this semester. Again, no medical or psychological excuses are accepted for late papers, but you may post ahead as much as you like.

NOTE: every semester at least one person fails this class or gets a C grade because they have not adhered to the requirements of the syllabus.

Reflection Papers: (Minimum 3 pages each, no 2.5 or 2.75 or 2.9 papers please:)) Must be posted on Discussion Board in Blackboard weekly. There is no maximum length on these papers, you may write as much as you need to in order to answer all of the criteria for each paper. It would just seem impossible to answer all of these questions and construct a paper in less than 3 pages. The purpose of these papers is to forge connections between important theoretical constructs and personal experiences and to communicate these connections clearly and succinctly. Include the following points, plus anything else you care to write about, in your papers. Lecture notes on these topics are found in Course Documents. Do not just list these questions and answer them, but weave them into a paper with a personal/professional viewpoint and story that you would want to read. The papers are to combine the personal with the professional concepts. The papers do not have to be overly edited or use APA style, instead explain the concepts through applying them to yourself and self disclosure NOTE: some papers require that you review and comment on 8 videos (Three Approaches to Psychotherapy and Five Approaches to Linda).

B Contract Grade:Reflection Papers 1-16. Papers that do not meet the minimum page requirement and do not address the specific questions outlined on the syllabus for each paper will need to be re-done/re-posted and will count as a late paper. Papers are required weekly whether EKU is in session or not.

A Contract Grade:B Contract plus a Structured Theoretical Orientation Paper (based on a separate theoretical orientation text): Posted no later than 12/13 (one letter grade drop daily for late papers). All papers must be completed and posted to pass this course

NOTE: There are many items on the Master’s Comprehensive Exam (CPCE) that cover theory and techniques in counseling. The CPCE is a national, multiple choice exam with a cut off score for pass or fail set within 1 Standard Deviation below the national mean. You are only given two opportunities to

Page 5: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

pass this national exam, and if you fail it twice you do not receive your Master’s degree, which means you are not eligible for a certificate or license to practice counseling.

Course Outline:

ANSWER EACH OF THE POINTS FOR EACH PAPER BY WEAVING THEM INTO YOUR PERSONAL STORY AND PROFESSIONAL REFLECTIONS. All of the questions for each paper must be answered, with a minimum of 3 pages for the paper, but there is no maximum length. You may make the paper as long as necessary to answer all of the criteria for each paper.

DUE TO BLACKBOARD PROBLEMS, I PREFER THAT YOU PASTE YOUR PAPER INSTEAD OF ATTACH. ALWAYS CHECK AFTER A POSTING TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS COMPLETE. THE FIRST TWO PAPERS ARE DUE 9/6 BECAUSE THEY ARE MATERIAL THAT MOST OF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH OR HAS BEEN COVERED IN COU 813. NOTE: YOU MAY POST PAPERS ANYTIME, THESE DATES ARE JUST THE ABSOLUTE DEADLINE.

#1. Counselor Characteristics (Due 9/6 ) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.1. Discuss personal characteristics of effective counselors and how your characteristics match

up to this list.2. How did you choose to become a counselor?3. Discuss the issue of personal counseling for the counselor. What would be beneficial? Do

you think it should be required for counseling students prior to taking practicum, why or why not?

4. What values do you have about religion, sexual orientation, same-sex marriage, right to die, and termination of pregnancy that might conflict with counseling others who differ from you on these issues. How did you acquire these values? How have you struggled with these values? Considering you will have clients who will be struggling with any one of these issues at any time, how will you counsel someone whose values greatly differ from your own on these issues. Don’t say that you will refer them, because a referral of a client to another counselor based on values differences also means a referral of yourself to supervision and/or personal therapy to uncover your own issues and conflicts. Also don’t say you have no opinion, this course is about doing some soul searching and discovering and/or articulating your values/opinions and bringing them to the light of day for reflection.

5. Which issues faced by beginning counselors will create the most problems for you and how will you deal with them?

6. Have you ever experienced burnout in your life or job? What might you do to prevent counselor burnout?

7. If you have been to counseling discuss your experience(s) on rapport with the counselor, what you learned from the experience, how it changed your life, or any negative consequences of seeking therapy.

8. If you have not been to counseling, what issues do you think might be beneficial for you to discuss with a counselor. What keeps or has kept you from going to counseling? How will you reduce the barriers that have kept you from going to counseling this semester?

9. Describe in detail what type of counselor and what counseling approach do you think might work best for you and your concerns. What type of counselor or approach do you think would not be beneficial?

#2. Freud(Due 9/6) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.

Page 6: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

1. Compare Freud’s view of human nature with yours and how did you form your view of human nature?

2. Discuss Freud’s theory of personality and how do you see yourself fitting into this theory, specifically discuss your Id, Ego, and Superego development and the role each plays in your current life.

3. Discuss Freud’s theory and role of the unconscious in human behavior and how past unconscious material has effected your life. Discuss the process of how you have grown more conscious and how it has changed your life.

4. Discuss Freud’s major ego defense mechanisms and which ones you regularly use or have used. Discuss how you might discontinue using these defense mechanisms and what would you have to change to do so.

5. Discuss Freud’s psychosexual stages and compare to your own development6. Practice the technique of free association on yourself and comment on your insights.(Take

a topic that you are conflicted on (hold different thoughts/feelings/behaviors that conflict with each other), go to a private place, just begin to talk out loud about the conflicted topic without screening your thoughts/feelings, and see what revelations come to you regarding the conflicted area. Discuss the process and your insights.

7. Analyze your past and present dreams and comment on your insights. Try keeping a dream journal for the remainder of this course, keep it by your bed, record your dreams upon awakening, look for themes in the dreams of fears and wishes.

8. Discuss the limitations of psychoanalytic therapy.

#3. Jung(Due 9/13) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.1. Jung focused on human development at midlife and his own midlife crisis. The midlife

crisis is often described as a crisis of regret (coulda, woulda, shoulda). The younger you are the more you regret things you have done; older people regret things they have not done. What regrets do you have/have you had? And, how did you/are you dealing with your regrets? What changes (if you don’t make today), do you think you will regret in the future?

2. Discuss Jung’s key archetypes of the persona as revealed in your personality. How do your public and private persona differ? Is the gap between them large or small? How will you begin to narrow this gap to become a more authentic counselor/person (Jung refers to this process as individuation)? When did the gap between your private and public personna appear and what causes or reinforces the gap? What process have you used to individuate yourself as a unique person?

3. Discuss Jung’s key archetypes of the anima/animus as revealed in your personality. Jung says that the younger we are the more distinct our masculine and feminine sides are, but the healthy personality integrates our masculine and feminine sides. Where are you in the process of integrating your anima/animus? Do you see generational changes with integration of our masculine and feminine sides with your grandparents, parents, yourself, and your children/or the generation younger than you? What does it mean to be masculine or feminine, how does our culture structure masculinity and femininity, what are the penalties or lack of rewards for not fulfilling the masculine and feminine stereotypes? What penalties or rewards do you reap by fulfilling or not fulfilling masculine and feminine stereotypes?

4. Discuss Jung’s key archetypes of the shadow or wolf as revealed in your personality. Jung says that the healthy personality acknowledges and works with the shadow and the unhealthy personality refuses to acknowledge, denies, suppresses, and represses the shadow. Describe your shadow, how is it triggered, what good does it serve for you, and how do you try to manage it? Draw a picture or draw a mental picture (develop a metaphor) for your shadow, what does it look like, where does it reside, how do you control it, how

Page 7: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

does it control you? Discuss your pictorial or metaphorical representation of your shadow and how you would like to change it this semester. Spend some time developing and explaining this metaphor for your shadow in your paper, make it as concrete and real as possible by developing your metaphor as an object or animal, etc. You can not say that you don’t have a shadow in order to avoid learning about/reflecting on this hidden side of your personality. Spend some time alone in meditation or ask trusted others what they think your darker side is to your personality.

5. Discuss the role of spirituality (as defined by Jung) in your mental health. Religion is often seen as an external force and spirituality as an internal force. Discuss the role (or lack thereof of) of both religion and spirituality in your life and how it has affected you both positively and negatively. Did you choose your religion/spirituality or does it mimic your family roots? Discuss how your spiritual path evolved over time?

6. Jung talks about “conscious suffering” stating that we each have our “cross to bear” and only we can bear our own cross; we can not avoid it nor have someone else bear it for us. He states that there will be times that we will think that we can no longer bear our cross, but we must bear it and go on. What cross have you had to bear (or do you expect to have to bear), how will you bear it and how will you go on when you feel you can no longer bear it? (See notes in BB under Jung on Wounded Healer of the Soul)

7. Jung states that the purpose of counseling is not happiness, but the purpose of counseling is to develop a philosophical stance toward suffering. Describe what you think the purpose of counseling is and what philosophical stances have you developed or wish to develop to better cope with suffering.

#4. Adler (Due 9/20) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.1. Compare your views of personality with Adler’s views of personality.2. Compare Adler’s views of social interest with your philosophy of life.3. Adler states that our mental health is dependent on our ability to form interpersonal

relationships (friendship; making a contribution like work; love and family; self acceptance; and meaning in life). Discuss your progress in these 5 areas and where would you like to be in the future in these areas?

4. Discuss how your birth order has affected your adult relationships (both chronological and psychological birth order).

5. Analyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories that occurred before age 8, describe them in detail, describe how you felt in each, state whether you played an active or passive role, etc. and analyze them for themes). Based on these reflections, what would you like to change this semester about your current view of the world. Set these early reflections and analysis off as a separate section in your paper. You can not just say that you have no early recollections. Spend some time thinking about your past, sitting quietly and meditating, interviewing family members, looking at picture albums, visiting places from childhood, etc. to help jog your memories. Also spend some time learning how to analyze and interpret these early recollections as metaphors for your current world view.

6. Adler lists 4 personality priorities that people tend toward under stress. Discuss which one(s) best fit you and why. Has your personality priority changed or do you expect that it will change? How did you develop this personality priority? How will you change it?

7. Adler sees us as the actor, creator, and artist of our life. How does this description fit your own life experience? What kind of life have you created and what role do you plan in this life you have created? He says we write a play called “Our Life”, then we write a character in the play for “Our self”. Describe the play you have written for your life and the character that you play. If you could write a new play and a new character, how would it be different?

Page 8: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

What keeps you from writing this new play and new character? How will you begin to write a new play and character this semester? Do not take a passive stance for this question and say that you are not the author of your life and that you have turned your life over to a higher power and therefore have no control over it. Sit quietly and ponder the play called “Your Life”.

#5. Existentialism (Due 9/27) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.1. Compare existentialism view of human nature with your view.2. Discuss the concept of “courage to be” and explain how it relates to how you have chosen

to live your life. Have you had the courage to live your life minimizing regrets, the courage to try new things, the courage to redefine yourself? What has hindered you in developing this courage.

3. Existentialist focus on death to give meaning to life. Discuss your thoughts on your own eventual death and the death of those you love. Imagine attending your memorial service and the service of those you love the most. Describe what others will be saying/feeling about your death and any regrets you will have about the passing of your loved ones.

4. What do you want to be your legacy when you die?5. Discuss your own existential angst/anxiety and how it affects your life. What parts of your

angst is normal existential anxiety and what part is neurotic anxiety? If anxiety is fear, what are you afraid of? If fear is combated by being fearless, how have you been fearless in your life, in what areas have you not been fearless, what has kept you from being fearless?

6. What thing(s) would you like to change about yourself today that you know would have a significant positive effect on your life in the future. What keeps you from changing it? What are you going to do to make these changes?

#6. Rogers (Due 10/4) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.1. Discuss Rogers “core conditions of therapy” and how do they relate to your personal and

professional view of life. Would others describe you as congruent, transparent, and genuine? How have you developed these traits, or what has kept you from fully developing these traits? How real, transparent, genuine, and congruent are you living your life and what are the barriers to living this type of life? Whom do you tend to be the most and least transparent, genuine and congruent with?

2. Rogers states that counseling focuses on the gap between our ideal selves and real selves. Discuss both your ideal and your real self, then discuss the gap between your ideal and real selves. How will you begin to close that gap and what has kept you from closing that gap?

3. Rogers states that it is the therapeutic relationship that is curative and that the counselor is the instrument of therapeutic change. Discuss your ability to establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients. What would this therapeutic relationship with a client look like? How do you these ideas to establish therapeutic relationships with your loved ones? Discuss other healthy personal relationships that you have been able to establish and maintain or what has kept you from developing and maintaining healthy personal relationships?

4. Discuss the limitations of person centered counseling.5. Review the Carl Rogers and Gloria tape on reserve in the EKU library and comment. How

would you have counseled Gloria differently? What did you like about Roger’s style? Would you like to have Rogers as a counselor? Set this question off as a separate paragraph in your paper and spend some time on this question to show that you have thoroughly reviewed and reflected on the Gloria tape.

#7. Gestalt (Due 10/11) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.

Page 9: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

1. Discuss the concept of “the here and now” and how do you apply it to your life. What percentage of time do you live in the here and now, what percentage of time would you like to live in the here and now? (The Now is often described as the time of the no-mind or non thinking mind so that you are in the moment, experiencing joy, beauty, and peace.) For some pondering nature is a means of entering the Now, what is your means of entering the Now? How do you stop the chattering mind or what keeps you from stopping the chattering mind?

2. Discuss the concept of “unfinished business” and discuss the unfinished business in your life (the stuff from the past that still causes us angst/conflict/pain/suffering). Perls says that the past is not in the past, the past is in the present. We carry the past with us and it affects everything we do in the present. What kind of angst/conflict/pain/suffering has your unfinished business caused? How can you finish your unfinished business?

3. Discuss “peeling the onion” relative to your personality. What layers have you removed and what layers are you afraid to remove? What keeps you from removing these layers? How would your life be different if you were not afraid to remove these layers? Who do you/would you remove these layers with?

4. Perls states that we use words to avoid the here and now. Change your word usage of “I can’t” to “I won’t” for one week and comment on your insights. What is it that you won’t do? How can you increase your assertiveness in this area? (Some people initially find “I won’t” a harsh statement and it probably brings back memories of disobeying as a child, but making an honest statement of why “I won’t be able to do xyz” is powerful without having to think up the excuses that usually follow an “I can’t do xyz”).

5. Confrontation is a focus in Gestalt therapy. Discuss your comfort level with confrontation techniques. Has anyone every confronted you and pointed out the discrepancies in your behaviors and how did you react? What discrepancies do you currently have in your behavior and how will you resolve them? (conflicts within you between thoughts/feelings/behaviors and any combination of these things)

6. Apply Perls’ reversal technique to yourself for one day and comment on your insights. Engage someone you are in a relationship with to do this with you and comment on the results.

7. Perls’ philosophy of life was found in the “Gestalt Prayer”, how does this compare to your philosophy of life? How could this philosophy revolutionalize relationship and breakups?

8. Perls talks about chicken shit, bull shit and elephant shit, are you good at sorting out the chicken shit from the elephant shit in your life? Describe the things in your life that are chicken shit and elephant shit, what if you looked at everything in your life as merely chicken shit?

9. Discuss the limitations of Gestalt therapy.10. Review the Fritz Perls and Gloria tape on reserve in the EKU library and comment. How

would you have counseled Gloria differently? What did you like about Perls’ style? Would you like to have Perls as a counselor? Set this question off as a separate paragraph in your paper and spend some time on this question to show that you have thoroughly reviewed and reflected on the Gloria tape.

#8. Glasser’s Reality Therapy (Due 10/18) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.

1. Glasser focuses on the client’s “quality world”. Discuss what and who is in your quality world and how they got there. How has your quality world changed over time? How do you anticipate it changing in the future?2. Glasser states that frustrating relationships=anger and we cope with the anger through

choosing to depress. Choosing to depress is the most common way to ask for help without begging and allows us to avoid doing what we are afraid to do. How have you chosen to

Page 10: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

depress in your life? What people/events have you chosen to depress over in the past and how have you tried to deal with it?

3. Apply the WDEP system to a problem in your life and comment on your insights.4. Review the Glasser and Linda tape in External Links. How would you have counseled

Linda differently? What did you like about Glasser’s style? Would you like to have Glasser as a counselor, why or why not? Set this question off as a separate paragraph in your paper and spend some time on this question to show that you have thoroughly reviewed and reflected on the Linda tape.

#9. Lazarus’ Multimodal/Behavioral Therapy (Due 10/25) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.

1. Apply relaxation techniques to yourself for 10 minutes a day for one week and comment on your insights and which relaxation techniques you used..2. Apply systematic desensitization or exposure therapy to a problem/fear you have and

explain your insights. (Systematic desensitization is for fears/phobias, you have to build a hierarchy of fears that you expose yourself to, from lowest to highest, use relaxation therapy and get comfortable with each level of the hierarchy before you proceed to the next level. If you rush this treatment, it can actually ingrain the fear further and deepen the phobia. But the only way to get over a fear is to face it, (some techniques face all and a lot of the fear at once such as flooding, other do it slowly, bit by bit such as systematic desensitization)

3. Problems involve the whole person, there is no line between the mind-body connection. Apply Lazarus’ Basic ID assessment system to a problem you have and discuss your insights.

4. Lazarus’ approach to counseling involves the whole person. How can you engage your whole person to improving your mental/physical/emotional self?

5. Review the Lazarus and Linda tape in External Links. How would you have counseled Linda differently? What did you like about Lazarus’ style? Would you like to have Lazarus as a counselor, why or why not? Set this question off as a separate paragraph in your paper and spend some time on this question to show that you have thoroughly reviewed and reflected on the Linda tape.

#10. Ellis’ Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) (Due 11/1) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.

1. Discuss Ellis’ ABCDE theory of personality, apply it to a problem in your life and discuss your insights.

2. On July 24, 2007, Albert Ellis died at age 93, what legacy did he leave?3. What does Ellis mean by “Musturbation” and “I will not should on myself today”, and how

do these ideas play out in your life?4. Beck is the father of cognitive therapy and Ellis is the grandfather. Apply Beck’s “logical

errors” concept to your life and discuss your insights.5. Using the constructivistic approach, retell any negatives in your life story and significant

events by only focusing on the positive. (These specific techniques are also call Cognitive Reframing and Cognitive Restructuring, in other words if you change your story and your self talk, you will change your life). Look at an event in your life that you have always deemed negative, now look deeper at this event to see if there were any positives in it or did it have any positive outcomes. Now re-tell the story focusing on the positive aspects of the event instead of the negative.

#11. Feminist Therapy(Due 11/8) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.Discuss the key concepts of feminist theory and reflect on your thoughts on these key concepts. I realize that feminism has been stereotyped and increasingly discounted since about 1980. Many people are feminists today but do not want to identify with the label that is often seen as negative. Some men may not want to identify as feminist because they see it as a woman thing; however it’s about sexism which affects both men and women. An analogy might be that many people are gay or lesbian but do not want to identify with the negative stereotype of homosexual. Feminism is often discounted because it is stereotyped with not fulfilling the social gender role of femininity and masculinity; however, it’s about basic human rights.1. How has your gender role, gender identity and sexual orientation effected your personality

development. Reminder that each of these is different concepts. Gender role is a cultural construction related to femininity and masculinity; gender identity is related to biological and psychological concepts of male and female; sexual orientation is a continuum from heterosexual to bisexual to homosexual.

2. “The personal is political” is a key concept in feminist therapy. Discuss what it means to you and how it is reflected in your life.

3. Discuss the effect that your and/or others oppression has had in your life.4. The counselor/client relationship is viewed as equalitarian in feminist therapy. Discuss the

equalitarian relationships you have in your life and how would you use the equalitarian concepts as a counselor.

5. Do you/would you identify as a feminist, why or why not? How do you think the journey of identifying as a feminist or not identifying as a feminist differs from men and women?

#12. Satir’s Family Systems Therapy(Due 11/15) All of the questions for each paper must be answered.

1. Discuss the “family atmosphere” in your present and past families. What is your ideal “family atmosphere”? How could you create more of this ideal family atmosphere?

2. Discuss Satir’s defensive stances in coping with stress and which do you tend toward when under stress. How did you learn this defensive stance, how does it serve you, what problems does it give you, and how can you change this defensive stance?

3. Sculpt your present and past families on paper and reflect on your insights. Sculpt on paper your ideal family dynamics. This is a projective technique and quality of drawing is not

Page 12: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

related to this task, stick figures are fine. Actually draw out these 3 families (past, present, ideal future) and analyze/interpret your drawings after completed. (who is near whom, who is doing what, etc). Set this off as a separate section in your paper, use stick figures and simple representations for your family dynamics, then reflect and interpret the drawings of your family.

4. Discuss the “rules” (spoken and unspoken) that governed your family of origin. How have you complied with and/or challenged these rules? What has been the impact of these rules on your own life (e.g. self worth, relationships, career)?

5. Review the Masterson and Linda tape in External Links. How would you have counseled Linda differently? What did you like about Masterson’s style? Would you like to have Masterson as a counselor, why or why not? Set this question off as a separate paragraph in your paper and spend some time on this question to show that you have thoroughly reviewed and reflected on the Linda tape.

LOOK THESE UP ONLINE AT THESE PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION WEBSITE, READ THEM, AND REFLECT ON THEM IN THIS PAPER. Set this off as a separate section of your paper and spend some time commenting on the material from each professional association.

review it if interested

#15. Modern guru (read one original work of any modern guru listed on syllabus and reflect on his/her ideas). See requirements outlined earlier in the syllabus. An example is given below but is only an example, you must choose one of the four modern gurus listed on the syllabus. (Due 12/6)

#16. Modern guru (read one original work of any modern guru on the syllabus and reflect on his/her ideas). See requirements outlined earlier in the syllabus. An example is given below but is only an example, you must choose one of the four modern gurus listed on the syllabus. (Due 12/13)

For Example (Tolle is the only example provided. If you choose a guru other than Tolle, you can use this example as a model for your paper):Eckhart Tolle has synthesized chief concepts from psychology, philosophy, the world’s religions, and great literature into two simple books that speak to modern living for all people. Read Eckhart Tolle’s two books--The Power of Now, (1996) AND A New Earth, (2007)-- and write a paper reflecting on his ideas and how they relate to your personal and professional life. Read The Power of Now first because it is set up in a Q&A format which makes A New Earth easier to follow.

1. What does Tolle mean by “the power of now”?2. Is Tolle’s “now” different from Perls’ “here and now” concept?3. How are you controlled by compulsive thinking/the disease of thinking

(80-90% of which is repetitive, useless, dysfunctional and negative) and how can you stop it?

4. How does Tolle’s description of the egoic mind differ from Freud’s description of the ego?

5. Give examples of how your ego negatively impacts your relationships.6. Tolle says that the word god has become empty of meaning through

thousands of years of misuse and the word conjures up a mental representation of someone or something outside yourself. Explain how the word god is a help or a hindrance in enabling you to experience a transcendental reality.

7. All cravings are the mind seeking fulfillment in external things and in the future as a substitute for the joy of being. How are you controlled by your cravings (needs, wants, attachments, aversions)?

8. The intensity of pain we experience in our lives is related to the degree of resistance to the present moment. The more we are able to accept the Now, the more we are free of pain and suffering. How can you accept the present moment to reduce pain and suffering in your life?

9. The past gives you an identity; the future gives you the hope of fulfillment in whatever form. Both are illusions. “Yesterday is history; the future is a mystery; today is a gift, that’s way it’s called the present”. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry—all forms of fear—are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of nonforgiveness are

Page 14: Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology · Web viewAnalyze your early recollections and what do they reflect about your current view of life (list 6 early childhood memories

caused by too much past, and not enough presence. How will you let go of these negative emotions and live in the present moment?

10. What does Tolle mean by the pain body? Describe your pain body (the issues are in the tissues).

11. The whole advertising industry and consumer society would collapse if people became enlightened and no longer sought to find their identity through things. Nothing out there will ever satisfy you except temporarily and superficially. Things and conditions can give you pleasure, but they also give you pain. Things and conditions can give you pleasure, but they cannot give you joy. Nothing can give you joy. Joy is uncaused and arises from within as the joy of Being. How will you attain joy in your life?

I. Structured Theoretical Orientation Paper (Personal Theory) for the A Contract Grade only : (Minimum 10 pages in answering all reflection questions, but no maximum length. Due 12/13) As Corey notes, integrating theory, personal values, interaction style, and specific client needs requires time, attention, effort, and experience. The purpose of this paper is to begin this process of exploration and integration in order to articulate your own personal theoretical orientation to counseling. This is a structured paper; therefore, read the text “Developing Your Theoretical Orientation in Counseling and Psychotherapy, 2nd Edition” and answer EACH of the reflection questions at the end of each of the chapters. A couple of the reflection questions refer to working with clients, and since most of you do not work with clients just substitute “other people” for the word client when appropriate. NOTE: Chapter 5 has several case examples with reflections after each case; therefore all reflection questions for each case need to be answered. REMINDER: you may spend as much time as you prefer on each reflection question and generally a reflection implies thought and is not to be answered in a word or phrase or brief sentence (the point is to be thorough)

Additional guiding questions to ponder as you organize your Theoretical Orientation paper. You may wrap these points into other questions covered in the text on your theoretical orientation: What do you consider the most important therapeutic goals? Which theoretical orientation would most

guide you in formulating your goals? What do you see as your major responsibility as a helping agent? What would you expect of your clients?

How do you view the relationship between you and your clients? Which theories are compatible with your answers to these questions?

What are your basic assumptions about human nature? Which approach to therapy comes the closest to your beliefs?

Given your basic assumptions, what procedures will you use with clients to achieve the therapeutic goals?
