DEPUTY News – Prep to Year 2Good news for Prep students and parents. As with previousyears we have been able to secure time with Children's HealthService nurses to provide free Vision screening here in schoolfor our Prep students. Permission forms will be arriving homein the next week or so. Screening students for both vision andhearing are important ways for parents and teachers to be ableto identify these as possible contributors to learning difficulties, and therefore the earlier and more often these are done, themore confident we can be that these are not impactingadversely on children's learning success. Screening willcommence in our Prep classrooms on Wednesday 17th July.

Parents of Year 1 students please be mindful, there aretuckshop orders not being collected at the start of lunch break.Could parents please be aware, students in Year 1 collect theirown order from the tuckshop when they leave the classroomat eating time (unlike Prep with food being brought to theclassroom). Students therefore need to be aware if an orderhas been placed for them. Please let your child know if theyhave tuckshop for either lunch break and this will help ensurethey go to collect their food during eating time (otherwise it issometimes later in play or at the beginning of the next classsession that the tuckshop is able to contact and find studentswho have orders left).

Thank you to parents and our teachers for reinforcing our 'Nohat, no play' policy. Year 1 students in particular have beenpractising putting their hats away carefully and following up withreminders from teachers to make sure they have their hat withthem at school. We have been checking and reinforcing thisdaily in the playground and at eating times.

MUSIC NotesOur Choir is off to Coolum SS for Young Generation ChoralFanfare. Choral singing is good for physical health. The fullbody experience that is singing, requires attention to postureand various body muscles. There is a connection betweenthe emotional and physical. When we feel stressed, it affectsour body. Our blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperaturecan all increase. We can become tense and suffer ailmentssuch as headaches and insomnia. Activities that alleviate stressreduce these physical health problems. One Swedish study(Frontiers of Psychology reported in BBC News) found thatwhen people sing together their heartbeats are synchronised.Singers not only coordinate their breathing, but choral singinghas the overall effect of lowering the heart rate. This findingsuggests that it is possible that singing is beneficial to one’sblood pressure. Music - the most emotional of the arts -has a unique capacity to moderate our emotions. Many peopleself-report that music makes them feel better physically andmedical research claims that endorphins (the body producesthese to combat stress and pain) are released through singing. So go and join a Choir.

campsite greeted us. We were taken on a short tour of thecamp facilities and then had the pleasure of having morning tea, before beginning our activities.

Andrew, the outdoor Education teacher, had prepared chocchip damper and fresh Billie Tea. Stan, the camp custodian, told us it was Andrew’s birthday. We all sang happy birthday toAndrew while enjoying our scrumptious morning tea!

The main aim of the Student Leadership camp was to identifywhat skills each of us bring as a leader. We undertook a rangeof leadership/team building challenges to assist with answeringthat question. Our first challenge was to line up shoulder toshoulder in alphabetical order by our first name without sayinganything. We were only allowed to use hand signals tocomplete the activity.

We then had to complete the same challenge, this time usingour mother’s maiden name to complete the task, again withouttalking. That was harder to do than the first activity! These twochallenges helped demonstrate that your voice is not the onlytool you use to communicate and that being a good leader; youneed to learn to adapt the way you communicate to differentpeople.

Our next challenge was to manipulate a tarp on the ground, with everyone standing on one side and as one having to foldthe tarp over. Everyone had to remain on the tarp withoutlosing contact with the tarp. We tried different ways to completethis task. We learnt that working together as a group takesteamwork and the ability to listen to one another’s ideas andsuggestions to successfully complete the challenge.

Our next team challenge before raft building was ‘lava proof lilypad’. We were broken up into three smaller groups, with theaim of each team reaching an island, surrounded by hot lavathat contained each team’s water balloon slingshot. Supportingone another to reach the island without falling in to the lava wasa fun activity and demonstrated each team’s problem solvingskills to complete the challenge. Once teams had completedtheir water balloon slingshots, each group tried to hit MrConnors, who kindly offered to be a human target, for ourentertainment. Sadly, no one was able to reach the target!

Our last challenge and probably the most fun, was raft building. We had to work as a team to build the best raft using specificmaterials, which would float its passengers down the MaryRiver. Each person in each group brought a different skill tothe challenge, whether someone was great at tying knots, someone was able to plan or design the raft, while othersfetched equipment or organised life jackets. Everyone wasworking as one to make sure we achieved our goal. The ridedown the Mary River was exciting.

On our way to and from raft building, we had the uniqueopportunity to learn about local Aboriginal culture. Andrewshowed our group a Scar Tree and Bora Ring on the MimburiCampus. Scarred trees are trees which have had bark removedby indigenous Australians for the creation of bark canoes, shelters, shields, and containers and Bora Rings are circles inthe ground constructed from earth and stone. Andrew informedus that Bora Rings were integral to the religious ceremonies ofthe Aboriginal people and were typically associated with maleinitiation ceremonies.

All the Eumundi Student Leaders took away valuableunderstandings about leadership as an individual and as a teammember. We learnt that by working together for the benefit ofeveryone, we were more motivated to succeed. We developedleadership skills such as: communication, planning, problemsolving and conflict resolution. We believe these attributes willassist us in carrying out our leadership roles within the Eumundischool community.

We would like to thank Andrew and Stan for providing us withthe opportunity to develop ourselves as leaders and for makingthe day so enjoyable and rewarding. We are sure that the nextEumundi School leaders would truly benefit from undertakingthe challenges that we experienced at the Noosa District SHSoutdoor Mimburi Campus in 2020.

CHAPPY CHATFirst of all a big thank you to some amazing people - the tuckshop ladies who came in early and prepared the scrumptiousfood for our Mother’s Day Morning Tea and the wonderfulRotary people who volunteered their time to serve the coffeeand tea and cake and took the photos of students and Mums.It was a lovely morning and so great to see all the mums here.Another thank you to the P & C who organised and ran theMother’s Day Stall. It’s beautiful to see the students choosingtheir mum’s present, a lot of thought goes into their gifts.

On Monday 13th May I attended a training session that wasbasically about going the extra mile, never giving up on doinggood, but having a plan, a strategy to be able to live this out.Often we can have great ideas and aspirations but what do wehave to in place to lean on when the motivation seems to belacking or when the going gets tough. One of the strategiesthat really made me think about how we support our childrenis, how do we ask for support and how do we respond whenothers ask us for support? As adults we can often be morestraightforward in asking for help but how do our children askfor help or show us that they are feeling overwhelmed. If I’vehad a difficult day I’ll often say to my husband “debrief” whichis code for let’s sit outside and talk, I don’t just talk aboutmy difficult day but often about something that connects us.Children don’t usually say “I’ve had a hard day, can we debriefor talk?” Children will say “Will you play with me?” I know I haveoften found it difficult to find the time to “play” with my children,to draw, to ride, to build, to create, to cook but when I have,I see the difference in them and I also realised that it actuallydidn’t take up that much of my time, they didn’t need hours andhours of play just a moment of my time. As I encourage andremind myself, I’m also encouraging you to find time for playwith your child, this connection brings them reassurance thatno matter what else is going on in their world, they matter toyou and to them everything will be ok.
