  • PREFACE

An Edmonds book has been a dream of my first cousin, Stuart Lawrence Edmonds, ofMidland,Michigan, for many years. His enthusiasm spread as he shared his dreamwith me, andIhave enjoyedthe research Stuart asked me do inconnectionwith the book. When illhealthbeset his family with all itsdemands, the project had to beput on the "back burner." About two and a halfyears ago,Irealized thatif the book were to become a reality, itwould be up to me to put it together.

One of the most exhilaratingprojects onwhichIhave ever worked has been compiling the dataandwriting the Edmonds book. This being a compilation of the family lines of others who share the sameimmigrant ancestor, (Edmond Edmonds, Sr.),Ihave been thrilled to find distant cousins from all over theUnited States includingAlaska, as well as from Canada. What a GREAT family we have! Ithas beengenuinely exciting to get acquaintedwith so many wonderful family members as they have rendered then-assistance to this work.

APPRECIATION:Inmy initial research several years ago,IcontactedBetty Guinan of the East Granby Public

Library, and she recommended thatIcontact Jay Robbins of Springfield, MA,who also was researchingin this area. Jay was found to be an excellent source. Hehadno knowndirect relationship to theEdmonds family, but rather, was interested inthe history of the mining industry inthe Simsbury/ Granby/East Granby area, andprovided an immeasurable amount of impetus to this project. Being interested inthe mining, he was also interested in the miners themselves, especially those who were brought fromEnglandby Jonathan Belcher to work in the mines inConnecticut. Jay found that our immigrantancestor, EdmondEdmonds, Sr., was among "Belchers miners." Without Jays expertise andknowledge, and his willingness to share his findings, we might never have found the origin of our family.

There are also two others who have spent many, many hours gathering and proving data forTuscarawas County, Ohio, and Barry County, Michigan. Ithrilled over the dedication of CeliaHartmannof Carrolton, Ohio, andDanielLinderman of Hastings,Michigan. With their enthusiasm for the project, they have inspiredmany to submit their family lines to the book.

A special note of appreciation goes to a friend from West Bountiful,Utah,KirkBlackburn, whosharedhis technical expertise with me. Not only didhe help to set up the book but also came severaltimes to rescue me from computer problemsIhave encountered.

SUBMITTERS:Eachsubmitter contributedhis or her ownwealth of family knowledge. We give each our

heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the splendid addition they have made to our family history. Inalphabetical order, these providers include:

A word of caution is proffered. Every effort has been expended to make this work as correct aspossible. However, with so many submitters and so many varied sources, it is possible that some errorsmay have been included inadvertently.

We feel very fortunate that we have been able to uncover the amount of facts we have, and wewill continue searching for more information in the future. Family History is an ongoingproject and isnever finished. So we hope additions and/or corrections will be made to this work as the years go by. Asthe search continues, we will welcome any and all updates that might strengthen our history and anyproof to verify informationwe have found.

BIBLIOGRAPHY:As the submitters to the book range inability from novices to professionals, many have not had

training inthe recording of their sources, We have thus recorded them mainly as received and aregrateful for what they sent to us.

ORGANIZATIONOF THE WORK:As we have only been able to find information on EdmondEdmonds, Sr. and his two sons,

Edrnond, Jr. and George, we have divided the book into three sections, each section dividedbygenerations:

SectionIis on EdmondEdmonds, Sr., the Immigrant Ancestor, his life and his immediate family.SectionHis on the second son, EdmondEdmonds, Jr., his life, his immediate family andhis knowndescendants.Section IIIis on the youngest son, George Edmonds, his life, his immediate family and his knowndescendants.

Sections IIand IIIare indexed separately by direct descendants, their and spouses and siblings.

NUMBERINGAND CODING SYSTEM:Every individual in the bookwho is a direct descendant of our Immigrant ancestor is given an

    x

  • individualnumber as he or she is entered first as a child ina family. Children are numbered inconsecutive order ofbirthwithin each family, where known. UsingPeter Edmonds as an example, inhisfathers family, he was listed as follows among the children:

+ 12 Mii PETER EDMONDS.The "+" means that Peter Edmonds is continued on as a parent (in the same section as his father)in this case, inSectionHThe "M" (or F ifused) is for the sex of the individual. The "xi" is the positionof the child inhis fathers family.

WhenPeter Edmonds is carried on as aparent, the same individualnumber he had as a child is the samenumber he will have as a as aparent, just followedby aperiod, as shownbelow:

    12. Peter EDMONDS.

It is our hope and desire that the many family members who have come together to help with thewriting of this bookwill desire to stay in touch in the years to come, that we may truly be one greatfamily. Yes, we are a great family, great because, as a whole, we came from men andwomen who weregood, hardworking, God-fearing, diligent andhumblepeople. Their bloodstill flows inour veins. Wecanbeproudto bear their names and follow intheir foot steps.

    THE SEARCH

    (INTRODUCTION)

The search for our ImmigrantAncestor has been one that has been on-going for many years, evenbymy father, Dr. Clarence E.Hyattbefore his death in 1978, and has been a driving force inmyresearch ever since. After validating our relationship to EdmondEdmonds, Jr., we next tried tocorrectly identify his father.

ORIGIN:Our first indication of the origin of our ImmigrantAncestor was in the Simsbury VitalRecords,

page 151, where his marriage was recorded as, "EdmanEDMANS of Great BrittanandHanahADDAMS of Simsbery were married together the twenty fourth day augast one Thousand SeuenhundredandEighteen." Onpage 131of the same reference, their children, born 1719-1731,were recorded, includinghis second son, EdmondEDMONDS,whom we will refer to as Edmond, Jr. for clarity. Thislist didnot include their last son, George, who was born in 1735 andwhose birthprobably was neverofficially recorded. With the informationwe were able to find inSimsbury, we felt we hada goodfoundation for our search. Formany years we searched every English-bornEdmondEDMONDSby anyspelling that would fit the qualifications we had, but with limitedaccess to records, we found we werenot makingmuchprogress.

DEATH:In1995 we receivedan unpublishedmanuscript entitled An UnsettledYankee Family,by

Willard John EDMONDS, a grandson of George EDMONDS, "of Salisbury." Onpage 9 we read, "It isonly tradition about his being a linealdescendant of the Edmonds killedat the saltmine." Thesestatements litanew our fire of determination, andwe took our search to the Salisbury area and therefound the Probate Record for EdmondEDMONDS,of Salisbury, listed inthe SharonDistrictProbateRecords, dated 11September 1759.At that time, his son, EdmondEDMONDS, Jr., then residing on the"Oblong," Dutchess Co.,New York, was appointed to administer to his fathers estate. The Inventorywas taken 1Nov 1759by Ebenezer Stephens andPhillip Chatfield; exhibited 17Nov 1761. This listingshows a family possessing the essentials for not only farming, but the spinning of cloth. There was noextravagance which was typical ofmostpeople ofhis time. A thorough search was made intheSalisbury, Connecticut, area for Edmond, Sr.s burialplace, but none was found. We learned that therewere no monuments remaining; ifever erected, for those who diedbefore 1750,and only fortyinscriptions remained for the periodof 1750-1771. Edmond Sr. possibly couldhave evenbeenburied inanunmarkedgrave or possibly couldbe entombed insome forgotten mine shaft inthe LitchfieldCountyhills inConnecticut.

As to the "saltmine" which was referred to inthe paragraph above, Jay Robbins, our miningauthority, reported that there has beenno indication found that salt miningwas ever tried inLitchfieldCounty, Connecticut. Exploratory miningmight havebeenundertaken, but, because Litchfieldwasknown for its iron deposits, it is possible that Edmondwas killedwhile trying to extract ironore.Thisalso cannot be documented. According to the historian for the town of Salisbury, records for thatperiodof time are scarce, andnothinghas been found.

  • MOVE TO SALISBURY:We are not exactly certain when Edmond, Sr., movedhis family from the Simsbury/East Granby

area to Salisbury, but the last recorded land transaction inSimsbury was on 7 April 1753, when he sold11acres to John GOZARD. Isurmised that by 1755,Edmond, Sr., had located inSalisbury, LitchfieldCo., Connecticut, based on a reference stating that George EDMONDS, his son, had enlisted inCapt.Bellows Co. of Salisbury on 31Aug 1755. Also, Edmond, Sr. was on the list of taxpayers for Salisburyin 1756.And furthermore, ina land transfer inEast Granby in 1756,EdmondEdmonds was referred to as"Edmond Edmonds of Salisbury."

TRADE:We hadpreviously found much information on his son, Edmond, Jr., and from his obituary, read

that Edmond, Jr. was a miner and a plate turner (one who made wooden plates andbowls, probablyturned on a wooden lathe, operated by a foot pedal), and we took a guess that Edmond, Sr. also hadbeena miner that the son had learned the trade from his father. After reading An UnsettledYankee Family,we were convinced more than ever that our ImmigrantAncestor indeedwas a miner.

InreadingEast Granby, the Evidence ofa Connecticut Town, by Mary Jane Springman and BettyFinnell Guinan, onpage 19,we ran across the following statement, "Actualmining didnot beginunderthe leases until 1714 ...In 1715 (Jonathan) Belcher [one of the three lessees and later a governor ofMassachusetts] went to Englandandbrought back a dozen miners and a skilled refiner. He set up arefinery inBostonandproceeded to have his ore transported overland to Windsor andHartford,[Connecticut], from where itwas shipped on coastal sloops to his refinery. Itseems that not enough orecame out ofhis mines, which by now includedmines inWallingford and Farmington [Connecticut]."Could our Ancestor have been one of those miners that Belcher brought back from England?

Inthe meantime, Jay Robbinshadbeen searching the landrecords inSimsbury and East Granbytown records for the locationofEdmonds home(s). With this latest bit of information in the precedingparagraph, Jay turned his search to the many volumes of letters of Jonathan Belcher and found numerousletters written to his foreman, Joseph Pitkin, about the mines andminers. Inthese letters Jay found manyreferrals to EdmondEDMONDS, either directly or indirectly. From these letters, Jay noted the followingexcerpts:

Ina 1724 letter, itwas noted that water was rising inthe tunnels and that the miners had gone toBelchers Wallingford mine to work. The foreman was told that there was no danger and to bring themenback.

At one time, Belcher stated that the menwere holdingout the best ore for themselves andsending the poor ore to him. Ina 29 May 1732 letter, Belcher wrote, "SoIam content all themengo offbut EDMUNDS only, who may peddle [crushing the ore] for the Present tillThingscanbe brought to Rights, whichIhardly ever expect to see."

24 Feb 1735,Belcher wrote, "Iamglad EDMUNDS is to tend our Stamps [ore crushers].Idontunderstandhisworking for the other Compa(ny) sinceIwas inCharge ofbringinghimover andimploying (sic) himso many years."

18 October 1736,Johathan Belcher instructedJoseph Pitkinto "dismiss all the menbut thosefour menengaged incrushing the ore ina different location than the mines." Edmondwasprobably one of the four menstill left at the mine.

In1739,Belcher was still shipping ore. The manpower at the mine hadbeen reduceddrastically. Possibly the four miners who remainedat that time may have largely been engagedincarting surface ore and ore crushing rather than actual mining.

    2

  • Without these and other letters ofBelchers,we probably would never have been able to piece togetherthe evidence we hadbeen gathering about our ancestor or to have known for certain that he was a minerworking at Copper Hill, near Simsbury, Connecticut. These excerpts included good solid evidence thatEdmondEDMONDS hadbeenbrought to Connecticut by Jonathan Belcher to be a miner, and gave thedescription of the work he actually did as he was inBelchers employ.

IMMIGRATION:How and when did he come to New England? Ina search for passenger lists, we found that

many ships didnot havepassenger lists as are available in todays shipping. Inthe "Genealogy ofThomas Stephens of Turkey Hills, Simsbury, CT,"by Lester J. Stephens, 2003, selfpublished, he foundthe information onBelchers ships. Hehad extracted it fromFamily Tree Makers CD, "The CompleteBook ofEmigrants 1607-1776," CD #350, one of a 6 volume set publishedby the GenealogicalPublishingCo., ByPeter Wilson Coldham. The search was narrowed down to possibly three possibleships. The shipping information gave us only brief information as to the agents and men incharge whohad taken out passage on the ship, but didnot list those travelingwith them. The three ships were listedas follows:

CONSENT: "14 to 20 April 1715-Shippers by the CONSENT ofBoston, Mr.WilliamWyer, boundfrom Plymouthto Boston,Philip Pentrye [prob. an agent] for Jonathan Belcher and JacobWendell, Amos Doidge for Abraham Bauman, Stephen Edwards."

KESTA: "13 Mar 1717 Shipper by the KESTA ofLondon,Mr. Thomas Wenmouth, bound fromPlymouth for Boston: Jonathan Belcher."

ENDEAVOR: "8-17 June 1717~ Shippers by the ENDEAVOR ofTopsham, Mr.RichardBurge, bound from Plymouth for Boston: NathanielWhite for Daniel Clutterbuck & Co.,Philip Pentyrefor Jonathan Belcher."

Of these three ships, the first one inApr. of 1715,might havebeen too early for Belcher to have gotten toEngland, found the miners and returned to New Englandconsidering the length of time it took to crossthe Atlantic at that time. Our educated guess, wouldbe that Edmundcame on the second ship, theKESTA, 13 Mar 1717,with Belcher.

EDMONDSPOSSIBLE ENGLISHROOTS:Our "fire ofdetermination" was almost out againwhen one day John Grandy, anEDMONDS

researcher from Toronto, Canada, and a descendant of George, suggested that we look inCamborne,Cornwall, England, where he hadnoticedan EDMONDS family of our time period. Ina search of theInternationalGenealogical Index [hereafter referred to as IGI]publishedby the FamilyHistoryDepartment of the Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah, and the CamborneParishrecords,we discovered the following family andnotedthe similarity ithad to ours:

Nicholas Edmonds, md27 Dec 1676,Camborne Parish, Cornwall, England, Katherine Pender

Children:KatherynEdmonds, Chr. 11Nov 1677, Camborne Parish, Cornwall, EnglandNickolas Edmonds, Chr 10Nov 1678,Camborne Parish, Cornwall, EnglandMatthew Edmonds, Chr 4 Sep 1681,m.MaryRule,24 Jun 1711, Camborne Parish, Cornwall,EnglandNicholas Edmonds,Chr 9 Mar 1684, Camborne Parish, Cornwall, EnglandEdmundEdmonds, Chr 18 Sep 1687, Camborne Parish. Cornwall, EnglandOliver Edmonds,Chr 2 mar 1690, Camborne Parish, Cornwall, EnglandJohn Edmonds, Chr 22 Apr 1693, d. 5 May 1694,Camborne Parish, Cornwall, EnglandWilliam Edmonds, Chr 4 May 1695, Camborne Parish, Cornwall, England

    3

  • Incomparing the names of this family with the names our Edmond and Hannah chose for theirchildren, it was found that four of them were the same as in the family above and in the same order. Theother three names inEdmonds family couldbe ADDAMS family names. Inthe Parish records ofCamborne, there were several matchingnames to Nicholas family which were of the same generation asNicholas and couldbe his siblings. Many of these same names were carried down by Edmonds sons,EdmondJr. and George, here inAmerica. A will for Nicholas was sought but no evidence was foundthat any of this Edmonds family inEnglandever made out a will. We have since learned that few menof those days made out wills unless they had landor personalproperty to divide among their family. Ourevidence of relationship to the Nicholas Edmonds family is NOT conclusive, only based on the bestknowledge we have to date. Further research is needed.

Could our family definitely have come from Cornwall, and ifso, why would Edmondwant toleave England? Jay Robbins turned his research to the mining and livingconditions among the minersthere inCornwall. He found the working and livingconditions, especially in the area of Camborne, weredeplorable and there was much serious illness inovercrowded living areas. As mines gave out ,theminers would move on to productive mines until they too would give out. Then these moves wouldrepeat themselves over and over again.

CONCLUSION:Jay andIstarted researching the few names of the other miners that Belcher mentioned inhis letters.

Some of those names were also found recorded inthe Camborne - Redruth area; especially, we notedone Thomas Stephens who was Edmonds next door neighbor and good friend inEast Granby. We feltfairly certain that we had found the Englishhome of our ancestor!

    EDMOND EDMONDS, SR.(AndHISFAMILY)

    1. EdmondEDMONDSwas christened on 18 Sep 1687 inCamborne Parish, Cornwall, England. He diedbefore 11Sep 1759 inSalisbury, Sharon District,Litchfield, Connecticut. EdmondmarriedHannahADDAMS on 24 Aug 1718 inSimsbuiy, Hartford, Connecticut. Hannahwasprobably born inSimsbuiy, Hartford, Connecticut. She diedprobably inSalisbury, Litchfield,Connecticut or in Sichem, or Amenia, Dutchess Co., New York, where her sons Edmond, Jr.and George were living. We have found no recordofher death.

NOTES:RESIDENCES: EdmondEdmonds hadan early landgrant at Turkey Hills on Squadron Line,EastGranby. The last land transfers for him there were made between 1722 and 1756. Hemoved toSalisbury, SharonDistrict,Litchfield, Connecticut to live, probably about 1755. The last recorded landtransfer we have for him inSimsbury records, 1756, calls him EdmondEdmonds of Salisbury. As hisson George served inthe Frenchand IndianWar from 31Aug to 5 Dec 1955, inthe Company of Capt.Samuel Bellows of Salisbury, Edmond, Sr, andhis family were probably living inSalisbury by that time.Edmond Sr. was probably killed ina mining accident inSalisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut.

DEATH: "Edmond Edmonds of Salisbury. Administration to EdmondEdmonds of Oblong, DutchessCo., NewYork, 11September 1759. Inventory taken 2 November 1759,by Ebenr Stephens andPhillipChatfield; exhibited 17November 1761." (Sharon County Probate Records). This EdmondEdmonds ofthe Oblong was the sonwho had joined with the Moravians. Inthe WillardEdmonds Journal,"UnsettledYankee," it said that George, (the headof that branchof the family) was of "linealdescent of the manwho was killed in the sinking of a Salt Mine inSalisbury." We have been toldthat there were no salt mines around Salisbury, and George only had one ancestor who lived inAmerica,EdmondEdmonds, Sr., who was the miner described above.

PROBLEM:For many years, researchers have assumed that the HanahAddams mentioned intheSimsbury Birth records as beingbom"27 March 1688, dau. ofJohnAddams, Sr." was the same Hanah ,Addams who was recorded as beingmarried to EdmanEdmans, 24 August 1718. However, IntheArchives of the FamilyHistory Library in Salt Lake, a sheet submitted by Meshach Tenney hadanearlier mg. of this HannahAdams to Philip Calverly of Colchester, 30 Dec 1713. Descendants of thiscouple have proven to their satisfaction that the John Addams andhis wife Abigail (Pinney),whomearly researchers thought were the parents of our HanahAddams, by then they hadmoved to Colchesterwith their family and that there was a marriage there to a Philip Calverly. Both of these Hanahs hadchildren during the same time period, andPhilip namedhis wife Hannah inhis will. Research isongoing on this problemas we search for the true identificationofour Hanah.

Itcould have been that they lived inhis parents home, but wesuspect their home, whatever it was, would have been very humble. We also suspect they moved to WesternConnecticut at the same time as hisparents movedto Salisbury as EdmondJr. was on the June 1755 Tax List of theNorth East Precinct, Dutchess Co., N.Y., under the name of Edmond "EDWARDS" and again, as EdmondEDMONDS, fromJune 1757-1765. EdmondEdmonds,Jr. was livingon the Oblong inNewYork at the time ofhisfathers deathover inSalisbury,Connecticut in1759and was livingonarentedfarm inSichem-on-Oblong (SichemPlains) near Amenia, Dutchess Co.,NY. The attractionofpromises ofbetter livingconditions encouraged the fewfamilies inSichemto decide to moveto the Moraviansettlement at Gnadenhuttenon the MahoninginPennsylvania. The first families to make the move were the Warner families. NathanWarner and his children moved down in1771. EdmondEdmonds, wife and seven children moveddown inOctober of that same year to live inFortAllenuntil their home couldbebuilt. The Warner families movedout of the Fort inJanuary 1772 and occupied their newhomes, and left the Edmonds holding the fort alone untilOctober following when they also movedover the river.CHURCHAFFILIATION: In the Gnadenhutten, PA Church Records, Edmund was listedas having originallybeenPresbyterian. They mayhaveattendedthe PresbyterianChurchinSimsburybeforemovingto theAmenia areaof Connecticut. The oldest church in Amenia, on the Oblong, was Presbyterian, and probably was where theyattendedChurchuntilconvertedby theMoravians."InDutchess County, inthe ColonyofNewYork, near theborderlineofConnecticut, there stillexistedat thisperiodoftime, the SichemMoravianCongregation, inchargeofFrancisandAnna CatharineBohler, andaccording to a catalogue oftheyear 1769, the membership consisted for the greaterpart ofthe two large families,Warner andEdmonds livingonrentedfarms. EdmondEdmondswas receivedinto theMoravian Congregation at Sichem on 6 Nov 1757 and was admitted to the Sacrament 1January 1759. Elizabethbecame amemberoftheMoravianCongregationat SichemonJanuary 1,1761. Heraisedhis family as Moravians....On the expiration of their leases, their attentionwas attractedby the favorable offers of landon the Mahoning, and, after a tour of inspectionmade inJuly, 1770,DanielWarner, hiswife andsix childrenmovedto Gnadenhuttenand took up temporary quarters inthe oldFortAllen. InFebruary, 1771,they were followedbyhis sonNathanandwife and three children, and in October of the same year, by EdmundEdmonds, wife and seven children. HenryDavis and William Knickerbocker, of the Sichem congregation, also expressed their intention of removing to theMahoning, andFrancis Bohler, was recalled to Bethlehem inOctober of the same year." (See Sources: "Rau.").TRADEor OCCUPATION:Inthe GnadenhuttenPAChurchRecords, EdmondJr.was listedas aMiner,Artificer&PlateTurner. According to info foundbyJimmy Parker, editor oftheEvertonMagazine, adishturner isone whoworked on a wood lathe (prob. runby a foot pedal) to formwooden bowls. A plate turner then would be one who

  • made wooden plates.CHILDREN: According to the Obituaries ofEdmondandElizabeth, they had 13 children. However, according tothe printedhistory, it said that the family consisting ofwife and seven children, moved to PA in 1771.All 13 of theknownchildrenwere bornbefore 1765 so there must havebeen 6 children who either diedbefore that date or couldhave been marriedby then and decided to not make the move. The Sichem, NY Moravianchurch records, listed 8childrenwhowent to Pennsylvania:Rosina,Catherine,Anna Johanna, Nathaniel,Martha,Mary,Peter, andRebecca. We suspect one mighthave come later. John andZilpah diedbefore the move, and it isnotknownifBarbara, Leahand Rachelhadmarriedand decided to not move to Pennsylvania or if they also haddiedbefore the move.DEATH: "About the middle ofFebruary, Edmond, Jr. took a severe cold, which remainedwithhimandproved tobe a means ofhis departure on the above mentioned day (24Feb 1811)...Age 89 yrs, 11months, 1week, 3 days."(Gnadenhutten, PA, Moravian Church Records).NOTES ONELIZABETHGOZARD:SURNAME&PARENTS:Inearly Simsbuiy, thenamewas spelledGOZZARD/GOZARD/GOSSARD/GOSARD,andmore recently, it is almost universally spelledGODDARD. Inher obituary, inthe GnadenhuttenPA MoravianChurchRecords), itwas spelled GADHARD. This does not indicate a different family, for her Obituary said shewas born inSimsbury. A serious searchhas beenmade to discover the parents ofElizabeth. We feel certain that sheisthe granddaughterofNicholasGOZZARDandElizabethGILLETTofWindsor andlater,Simsbury,Hartford,Co.,Connecticut, who hadonly three children, according to the GoddardBook, listedbelow: Elizabethwho md. SamuelNeele, Nathaniel Gozzard and John Gossard who md. Sarah Hayes. We have not located records on NathanielGozzard, but strongly feel thatNathanielwas the name ofher father. The name "Nathaniel"was introducedinto theEdmonds familywithEdmond,Jr. andElizabeth, andhasbeencarrieddownfor manygenerations inthe descendants. We invite verification or additional information.BIRTH& DEATH: The Obituary listedher age at death as 89 y, 1m,2 w, 4 d. This would calculate her birth at22 Jan 1722.
