This is IN PROGRESS; please forward your additions to me for the next update. Thanks. HOW TO READ AND FOLLOW A GENEALOGY REPORT. Once you figure it out, it's simple and instant, but it is difficult for someone new to figure out who is who. Everybody has a number. Our oldest proven common ancestor is #1 in this report, his children are all numbered. To find the family of any child, browse forward in the report until you come to that child and number's family. Likewise his/her children will be numbered. The report is also sectioned off by Generations. If you don't know your
line, start at the end and find yourself and work backwards by the numbers. Please contact me with any corrections or additions. Thank you for your input.

age].
The Nathaniel French b 1787 instead of the one b 1806, is the one who married Joanna Day Hallowell in

See Belfast Marriages p159: Mrs Joanna E French had 3 other possible marriages 1840, 1842, and 1843.
1840 int; 1842 int "revoked by Mrs J E French"; 1843 was mar int to Samuel Parker of Augusta and a cert

b Cumberland RI to Addison Thompson & Sally Hancock, both b C. Siblings: Curtis A McFarland and
Orilla McFarland. 1855 and 1860 Census show him living in Lexington and Hopkinton, Middlesex
County, MA. 1870 he's in Worcester, Worcester County, 1880 he's in Boston. All this time he is living
with his parents. Of course we are missing 1890, but the divorce decree shows his address as
Marlborough, Middlesex County, MA. 1900 Census shows him in Brookfield, Worcester County, MA
living there as a boarder. And now the interesting part: 1910 and 1920 Census show him living as a
boarder in St Joseph, Buchanan County, MO. After that I lose him.
August 2014 update from Sharon: I found him! Through Find A Grave, then I called the state hospital
where he died and I ordered a copy of his death certificate.
He died Feb. 11, 1926 in the Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville, MD. I called the hospital and of
course they could only give me limited info, but....when they told me what info was on his death record, I
said can you at least tell me if his parents were Andrew J McFarland and Adeliza Thompson. And they
were able to confirm that. I also asked them if the record shows that he was born in MA in 1854 and they
said yes. So then I called MD vitals and I have a copy of his death certificate coming any day now. He is
also buried right there on the hospital grounds in Sunrise Cemetery, plot 140. No headstone. Patients
didn't have them I was told. Just a stone on the ground I guess.
I would love to know what ever made this man leave his wife and children. Something I will probably
never know. And also, what took him to MO and to MD. Could be other states that I am not aware of,
but according to the census, in 10 year intervals, I think he was pretty much right in ME, MA, MO and then
MD. Just can't imagine ever leaving your family. So many unanswered questions.

occurred at 6:15 A.M. Monday at his home on North Main street after an illness of about a week. Mr

times in Pittsfield. He was considered something of a genius, and had invented several articles, some of

them having been sold for a good sum. He leaves a wife, a small son, a daughter by a former marriage, and
one brother, John Rhoades of this town. His age was 45 years. Funeral services were held at his home at 10
o'clock Wednesday forenoon, Rev F.S. Walker officiating. Interment was made at the village cemetery."
Roland and son Ivan are both buried in Pittsfield Village Cemetery, but it appears there is no stone and
no record and that the cemetery buried someone else on top of him. Daughter Irma in Pittsfield tried
resolving the question with no luck in the 1950s. Rev Frederick S Walker was a Universalist minister, at
Pittsfield Universalist 1908-1915, and later at Waterville 1925-1928. Roland and his family worked in
textile shops in his early years. Roland's first patent for which we find a record was filed Jan 9 1891 when
Roland was age 24 and granted Jan 26 1892. It was for an improvement upon the loom.
Roland Eaton Rhoades was named after Roland L Eaton (1835-1870), son of the Rhoades family's
good friends and cousins by marriage, Joseph Eaton (1800-1865) and Mary A (1809-1868). The Eatons are
all in Fort Hill Cemetery in Winslow.
April 1910 Belfast Ward 2 census lists Roland E Rhodes 41 div rents at 71 1/2 High St and is a jeweler,
repair work, working on own account. Not found 1900.
Roland is listed in The Maine State Directory & Gazeteer 1893, p 282, and 1894 p 333, and 1895 p311
on Main St in Pittsfield, under Jewelry, Watches, etc. 1898 Worcester MA p411 has a Roland E Rhoades,

Palmyra census lists Orin March 1842, Elizabeth Jan 1845 md 26y, 4-3ch, Orin A Crosby grandson Apr
1889. Orin Soule was the son of Rufus, a Mayflower descendant. L Mae Rhoades sued Roland E Rhoades
for divorce in Kennebec Co court, for desertion, vol X-p23, granted 29 Sept 1910. Divorce record says they
were married 8 Jan 1900, but m/c says 8 June 1902 in Newport. Found no further mar or death rec for
Lillie, under any last name. The Soule family is buried in Spring Hill Cem in Palmyra, with Lillian's name
on the monument with no death date. Orin L 1846-1920; Eliza J 1844-1925.
Family legend, as told by his wife Grace who lived until 1966, says that Roland was friends with
Thomas Alva Edison, and that's why his son's middle name is Edison. Roland was a jeweler who worked
on clocks. Grace Flagg was a schoolgirl, 27 years younger than him, who walked home past his jewelers
shop in Belfast. They fell in love despite the age difference and got married. Grace also said that he was an
alcoholic (also proven in the divorce record of his first wife), and had blinding migraine headaches. A
family story passed down is that she being still a girl and not knowing better, as a tidy person, she emptied
the little bit of rat poison left over into an old aspirin bottle to make more room. During his headaches,
Roland would blindly reach into the medicine cabinet and feel around for the aspirin bottle and mistakenly
took the rat poison which killed him. Grace remarried three more times.

Y-DNA testing at FTDNA, corroborated by testing a cousin's Y and autosomal, determines that Grace's husband
Roland Rhoades was not the father, a Mr Peavey was. Family photo comparisons of facial features helps to
confirm. Further research now takes this line back, but still looking for dna matches and family photos from this
family to confirm the match.
In the spring of 1954 the family, Roland, Marion, dau Lynda and son Roland and family all moved to Phoenix AZ
where Ed Boudway said there were jobs. They lasted 3 months before homesickness got them and they moved back
to Maine where all their friends and family were. An old photo album says they left Maine April 5 and arrived in
Phoenix April 11; they left Phoenix July 22 and got home July 28, 1954. They lived at 3112 E Diamond St. The

Works, and helped build the St Lawrence Seaway in NY in the 1950s or 1960s. While at BIW, someone came up to
him and said I think I know your sister. He replied, I don't have a sister. This was when he first learned that he did
have a half-sister via his father's first marriage, Irma Rhoades Wall Butler. She visited and a group family photo is
on my Rhoades family webpage. His father died when he was less than 2 years old. Roland was named after Thomas
Edison because his father had worked with and thought highly of him. Roland was also a member of the
Freemasons, though I don't recall him ever mentioning it; The Maine Mason magazine just kept coming in the mail.
He loved to eat and would have spaghetti eating contests with the Boudway side of the family (Butch Nuzzo). He
and Marion bought their house at 133 Northern Avenue Farmingdale [83 after 911 change] around 1933 and lived
there their whole lives, until Marion sold it in 2003.
I remember that their phone # when I was a kid was simply "768M", a party line that was frequently being used by
a neighbor when you wanted to use it.
My grandfather Roland in a 1990 tape said that he went back and forth from his mother's to his grandmother's and
Uncle John's homes. Quit school at 14 to work. Lots of different schools. Remembers an Uncle Lent, and an Uncle
Eanus who carved stuff, even wooden chains.

continent's first modern human settlers about 35,000 years ago, at a time when Neanderthals were the only
Europeans. By the time of the Neanderthals' extinction about 28,000 years ago, haplogroup U2e was
probably distributed across much of Europe. But today, thanks to the subsequent arrival of many other
haplogroups, it has become relatively rare. U2e reaches its highest levels in places like the town of Murlo,
where many inhabitants are thought to be descended from the pre-Roman Etruscan people. It is also
relatively common among the Udmurts and Mordvinians, who live in the Volga River drainage and Ural
Mountain regions.

220 M i. Roland3 Edward RHOADES was born 5 Jun 1930 in Gardiner, Kennebec, ME and died 7 May
2017 in Franklin, Merrimack, NH.
Roland attended Farmingdale and Gardiner schools, graduating from Gardiner High School in 1947.
Served in the US Army Air Corps, in charge of sled dogs in Labrador. He moved to Dover NH in 1955 and
East Rochester NH in 1959. He worked at GE in Somersworth NH for 11 years. He was a licensed
electrician, carpenter and general contractor, a co-owner of a couple companies. He and Muriel were also
owners of Hilltop Recreation Center in Somersworth NH, which he built from the ground up in the 1960s
to include a golf driving range, go-karts, baseball and softball batting cages, and "Space Age" miniature
golf. That was a major news attraction; each hole had a giant theme, like a flying saucer large enough to
walk through, that airplane pilots said they used as a bearing for landing at the Rochester airport. It also had
space creatures and planets made from steel, chicken wire and mortar. His children always had summer
jobs! He was also an Eagle Boy Scout, Order of the Arrow; Scoutmaster in Gardiner ME and Salmon Falls
NH; Cubmaster in East Rochester; and served on the vestry as Jr and Sr Warden of the Episcopal Church in
Rochester. He converted their summer camp in Sanford to year-round and moved from East Rochester in
1980. He sold his business and retired to Lakeland FL around 1985 in a retirement park where he has been
President of the Shuffleboard Club, with many trophies. He and Muriel have led a very active life in the
Florida warmth; it's hard to ever find them home. In January 2011, they sold their home in Lakeland and
moved in with daughter Nancy in NH.

Broadly Southern European, .1% Ashkenazi, 4.1% Broadly European; .2% East Asian & Native American,
.1% Mongolian, <.1% Native American. Broadly means they do not yet have the comparative data to pin it
down, but it will eventually increase the Scandinavian and French amounts. This is one reason why they
dropped the price to build their database to a million users. His father's story about his g-grandmother
(Whalen) being an Indian princess is in question. This test also showed 2.7% Neanderthal dna.
Roland3 married Muriel Ruth ROBERTSON, daughter of William Lewis ROBERTSON and Edith Maude

FTDNA test results: Haplogroup is H6a1a2a. [My maternal cousins will be the same - Robertson >
Leavitt > Stinneford > Trafton > Penney > Gowen > Cole > Spencer 1698.] H6 is one of the oldest
branches of haplogroup H. Its age is estimated at around 26,000 years. It is one of the most frequent
branches of H found among Arabian lineages, and is the most frequent branch among those found in
Central Asia. It likely originated in the Middle East or Central Asia. H6 is also found at very low
frequencies in Europe. I have also uploaded my data to the mtDNA Community website for additional
analysis.
23&me test refined Aug 2014 shows 99.9% European, broken down as 64.8% British & Irish, 12.7%
