Mise–en-scene on hospital clip.

By Haydn Williams

Lighting O This is the first snap I used to explain the cake sequence is that the light

from the candles makes the audience feel safe and warm. This second shot is of Sara in a hospital bed during the nightmare sequence. The lighting using here is dull and dark to help created the shadows in the scene. This will tell the audience that Sara isn't really awake by the darkness in her room to present that there is something happening. The third shot is where Sara is being held in Beth's arms and the lighting is clear and bright here to help show the audience that they are back in the real world. The lighting in these 3 shots is different to help create different concepts. The cake scene the lighting uses orange colours to create a warm feeling for the audience but in the second shot when she's in the bed the colours are dark green to show the audience that something is going to happen. The third part works better than the other two because the colours are bright showing that we are back in the real world.

Location O The location of the scene is in the hospital and it is

designed at the start to show Sara’s nightmare because it is designed with dark colours but has the same features of the hospital for example the heart beat monitor at the start of the scene. The colours of the location change throughout the scene at the start the colours are dark and grimy but toward the end the scene becomes brighter. The differences with the shots shown is that they look empty throughout there's nothing in the scene that takes the audiences attention.

Costume O The costumes used in this scene are simple. The

first costume is seen to be worn by Sara’s daughter. She seems to be dressed quite casual. The second costume of the hospital gown being worn by Sara her self tells the audience that what ever happened to her in the crash was serious enough to put her into hospital. At the end of the scene we see Beth and Juno dressed in normal clothes this will indicate to the audience that they are ok and there's nothing to worry about with them.

Props O The main props that are being used

in this scene are the birthday cake and the heart beat monitor. The birthday cake will represent to the audience that it is the little girls birthday. The heart beat monitor will set the scene at the start because it tells us straight away that she is in the hospital and that maybe there's something wrong with her.

Sound O The only no-diegetic sound used in

this scene is that is the music that is used during the birthday cake sequence and when Sara first wakes up. The rest of the sound used in this scene is all diegetic meaning that the sound is all natural.
