Small Hands, Big FeatFormer students of Tulasi Choura Colony Sahi Government Upper Primary School, at Baripada, are rendering their support for the school’s development. The young boys and girls are devoting time to keep the school premises clean and beautiful!

The school is a relatively new addition to the locality. It was established in the year 2010. The very first batch of the school is gone now, enrolled in the 11th class elsewhere. But their love and dedication for their alma mater brings them back every now and then. They have taken the responsibility of the school for the project completion and maintenance of the school’s physical infrastructure. Ever since the school came joined the Mo School Abhiyan, the alumni have been deeply involved in the school’s development process.

Tulasi Choura Colony Sahi Govt. UP School

The ex-students have made it a practice to help the school administration in their spare time. Though tender aged, they have showcased extreme teamwork, starting with cleanliness drives in the school premises to organising various extra-curricular activities.

With their active participation, the school has undergone noticeable development. With a dedicated space for TLM (Teaching Learning Materials) in each class room, imparting education has become simplified, yet advanced. The project has produced excellent results with three

students winning merit scholarships in 2019-20 academic session.

The school has been associated with ‘Mo School Abhiyan’ since 2018. With the motivation and determination of the dedicated alumni, it has undergone radical changes all round.

Construction of water fountain, internal pathways and dedicated space for TLM (Teaching Learning Materials) in each class room are some of the projects that have been completed in association with ‘Mo School Abhiyan’ at the Tulasi Choura Colony Sahi Government Upper Primary School.

From the USA with Love“Every day when I go to work, I remember my roots. I am grateful for the educational system the Government has built. For generations, these institutions have changed lives. Ordinary people like us have risen to great heights because of these schools. It is our responsibility to give back at least a part of their debt so that many more like us can be benefitted”

Smt. Namrata Patnaik is everything an Odia school girl would want to be someday. She has studied in a government school in Khordha, became an engineer and today, she is the chief executive of a San Jose based fabless semi-conductor company. She works in the leading edge of technology; the world is her oyster. But she has not ever lost her roots. That sense of belonging brought her one day to honour her father Shri Iswar Chandra Rout and what could have been better than

Smt. Namrata Patnaik

for her to build a library in the same school where her father had studied. He was an alumnus of 1955-batch in Ranihat High School, Cuttack. This is where Namrata wanted to do something. Today, the library built with her involvement and contribution, duly matched by Mo School Abhiyan has resulted in something truly aspirational. Smt. Patnaik, seeing how the library came up in record time, was spurred to do more.

“Every day when I go to work, I remember my roots. I am grateful for the educational system the Government has built. For generations, these institutions have changed lives. Ordinary people like us have risen to great heights because of these schools. It is our responsibility to give back at least a part of their debt so that many more like us can be benefitted”

Smt. Patnaik is spreading the message of Mo School

Abhiyan amongst the thousands of non-resident Odias who have reached great heights. She has been able to convey the intent of the idea because she has her own example to hold for everyone to see.

“I request all alumni from schools in Odisha to join Mo School Abhiyan programme, to adopt their own and other schools as well to help all-round development. Together we can. Together we will”.

Yesterday’s Child, Today’s MentorA student who once loitered on the veranda of the school with books in hand, is now chairing the meetings and executing plans for the development of the same school. The hands that once solved sums on the blackboard are now lending immense financial and emotional support to the school administration.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Tripathy was a bright student of VIMSAR, Burla and later at the prestigious Darbhanga Medical College & Hospital. Dr. Tripathy currently runs multiple private health care institutions in Bargarh and nearby areas. He passed his matriculations in 1987 from Baunsuni Government High School, Boudh which has now been adopted by him.

Many come and go, but only a few leave indelible impressions. Alumnus like Dr Rajesh Tripathy is such. A student who loitered on the veranda of the school with

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Tripathy

books in hand, is now chairing the meetings and executing plans for the development of the same school. The hands that once solved sums on the blackboard are now lending immense financial and emotional support to the school administration.

“My school is the second oldest educational institution of Boudh district, but over time, its impact has been steeply declining. This saddened me to the core of my heart and I pledged to do my part in reviving the school. My

school has produced many renowned doctors, engineers, bureaucrats, technocrats, and leaders and is still doing so, but the lack of proper infrastructure and resources stood as a hindrance to the school’s progress.”

Dr. Tripathy has started alumni drives by frequently arranging several offline and virtual meetings to motivate the alumni for contributing to the development work.

Cleaning of surroundings and levelling the uneven grounds were the first activity to be taken up after he took charge as the mentor of the school. Dr. Tripathy has been associated with many developmental activities of his village as well.

“When I got the opportunity of adopting my school, I was overwhelmed with joy. I always wish that the students of

my locality must get quality education and stride ahead with bright careers. This thought of serving society was imbibed from my father who is the ex-headmaster of the same school. Despite having exceptionally good educational qualifications, my father dedicated his whole life to the school and retired from the same school after serving for 34 years. This was an inspiration for me to do something in the field of education in my area.”

Undoubtedly, the proud mentor has proved that going an extra mile for society will always work wonders for any person who initiates a small change. No matter how big or small, once a lamp is lit, it does not take much time to light thousands.

Fine Example of Altruism“This is a transparent method to donate to schools. But our contribution does not end at just giving money, we also participate in decision-making with other members of the village community.”

Sri Himanshu Bisi, an alumnus of Panchayat High School, Bankipali, Sonepur who currently serves the Border security force (BSF). Bisihas pledged to donate ₹1,000 every month, to his alma mater until his retirement. In a campaign conducted by the school, Bisi said, “We can serve the nation through serving children, through serving people and through enriching our educational institutions.”

A man of his words, Bisi regularly visits his alma mater during his holidays and dedicates most of his time to teaching, taking drill and yoga classes. Often, he can be

Shri Himanshu Bisi

seen interacting with the students about their future goals and encouraging them to serve the nation.

Apart from this, Himanshu Bisi gives training to his village youths to help them join the Indian Army. “I have always hoped that the children of our village serve the nation at the borders. But since resources are not available for various reasons, I decided to make a difference. I have been personally training them without fail; I pray for their success in the examinations. Let adversity become their advantage.”

“This is a transparent method to donate to schools. Our contribution does not end at just giving money, but we also participate in decision-making with other members of the village and community,” said Bisi.

From Darkness unto Light“I am a staunch believer of Plato’s cave which states that if a person comes out of the shadow and sees light and recognizes reality, he should think of sharing the same light, knowledge with others. Education is an enlightening and empowering process which should reach all fellow citizens.”

On the professional front, the world knows Prof. N. Nagaraju as the Vice-Chancellor of Gangadhar Meher University, Sambalpur, and an unbending educationist but for his alma mater Sri Venkateswara High School, Garabandha, Prof. N. Nagaraju will always remain the kid. A student of the 1974-1977 batch, Prof. N. Nagaraju reminisces those days when his alma mater Sri Venkateswara High School, Garabandha was the only educational institution in and around the neighbouring village of Garabandha.

A few years ago, when the school joined hands with

Prof. N. Nagaraju

Mo School Abhiyan, it underwent great changes in its infrastructure. In the journey of reshaping the school, alumni like Prof. N. Nagaraju have been the most influencing stakeholders.

“I am a staunch believer of Plato’s cave which states that if a person comes out of the shadow and sees light and recognizes reality, he should think of sharing the same light, knowledge with others. Education is an enlightening and empowering process which should reach all fellow citizens.”

In addition to the financial contribution, he has also instituted an award for meritorious students in memory of his late father, Sri N. Adinarayana. Prof. N. Nagarajufeels that the school has noticeably developed after the Mo School Abhiyan joined hands with his alma mater.

Prof. N. Nagarajuhas chalked out the future projects he aims to achieve with the cooperation of the school administration. Some among them are the construction of an open-air theatre, more classrooms and procurement of computers in a bid to promote digital literacy among the rural students.

A Garden of Many Hues“Only if children can get their skills polished from a young age, we can have the best creative generation ahead. Therefore, I motivate students to go ahead with whatever extra-curricular activity they feel like doing. After all, a garden looks beautiful only if there are a variety of flowers in it.”

Smt. Ananya Rath, an alumnus of the 1990-batch of University High School, VaniVihar is the pride of her alma mater. A teacher by profession, Smt. Rath holds an MA degree in Philosophy who has taught for over 11 years. She believes that beyond traditional education, skillsare necessary tools to succeed in today’s world.

“The batch of 1990 had decided to do something meaningful for the development of the students. In my case, I had decided to take up classes on phonetic skills. Apart from that, I collected books for the school library and

Smt. Ananya Rath

contributed money. But more than money, I would like to impart a few important life-skills gained from my own experience to the students.”

“One of the prominent alumni of my school, an important figure in Odisha, Sri Subroto Bagchi once said, ‘Our School has given us a lot, now it’s time to give back some to our school’. After home, school is the place where our personalities are groomed and nurtured. So, each one of us has the obligation to do something for our school.”

“Only if children can get their skills polished from a young

age, we can have the best creative generation ahead. Therefore, I motivate students to go ahead with whatever extra-curricular activity they feel like doing. After all, a garden looks beautiful only if there are a variety of flowers in it.”

To keep pace with the ever-changing world, smart classes have been introduced in University High School under Mo School Abhiyan to make the children well acquainted with the regularly changing technological landscape. Many new

books and furniture have also been added to the library to leap ahead in the educational arena.

University High School was set up in the year 1962 on the campus of Utkal University. Over the glorious years of the school’s existence, its students have achieved many laurels. The school also has a record number of Best-10 students in the States’ High School Certificate Examination. The campus is green and provides a very rich academic environment to the students which encourages them to pursue their academics with diligence.

Drop-in for the Dropout“Colourful walls, paintings, mandala arts have adorned the school premises. As expected, students flocked to the school and our school became alive with active and playful children, a sight we had dreamt for ages.”

Alumni of the school, along with the school administration, can bring in wonders for their students. Alumni are a significant part of their schools. Sri Ranjit Kumar Rauta, from Government Upper Primary School, Bhejiput, has always been engaged to repay the debt of his alma mater, and Mo School Abhiyan is aiding him in these efforts.

Remembering the old days Sri Rauta said, “Our school is situated in a very good location and is sure to leave any visitor spellbound. But this was not the picture all along. At one point, the school went through a rough patch when student- dropout rate came to our notice. The number of irregular students also went up. After discussions with the school administration, we realised that the infrastructural lacunas of the school might be one of the reasons which failed to attract students to our school.”

Shri Ranjit Kumar Rauta

He added, “I sought the help of the school administration in this regard and assisted financially. It was used in multiple ways, but the bulk of it was used in the improvement of the school premises and the school garden. As soon as the work progressed, the transformation of the school in front of our eyes looked so soothing. Coloured walls, paintings, mandala arts adorned the entire school premises. Figurines of animals and birds were also put up here and there. As expected, students flocked to the school and our school was again full of active and playful children, a sight we had dreamt for ages.”

“Unless and until alumni of the school are directly involved in the programmes, it will be a difficult task to guide the students. We cannot burden the already overburdened teachers and school administration to look into every issue

of the school. The alumni are responsible too,” comments Sri Rauta.

Govt UPS, Bhejiput is the epitome of Mo School’s success. Multiple developmental activities have been undertaken by the school administration with the help of Mo School Abhiyan such as the construction of a meeting hall, procurement of furniture for students and staff, repairing of library and others. Construction of school gate, toilets and urinals, installation of RO drinking water facilities, procurement and installation of computers, solar inverters

and printers are some of the major activities planned under Mo School Abhiyan.

“Mo School Abhiyan has bridged the gap between the alumni, school and students. I am overwhelmed to be a part of this great initiative. As an eyewitness to the transformation that has been going around in the school after its association with Mo School Abhiyan, I would request all the alumni of Government Upper Primary School, Bhejiput to contribute and be a part of this amazing programme.”

Non-Stop at NinetyIn his nineties, yet young at heart, Sri Mishra received a letter of appreciation from the Honorable Chief Minister, Sri Naveen Patnaik.

Sri Tulasi Ranjan, a man in his nineties, grew up in a religious surrounding at Mirzapokhari lane of Balasore town. His father, Late Sri Golak Nath Mishra and his mother, Late SmtHemangini Mishra were very socially conscious. Due to the prolonged illness of his father, Sri Mishra had to face a lot of obstacles. As a result, he couldn’t complete his higher education. With the help of a few kind-hearted people, he joined Balasore Zilla School after finishing his primary education. In 1952 he completed matriculation and joined Fakir Mohan College, Balasore.

Owing to the financial condition of his family, Sri Mishra had to leave his education halfway in college and had to take up a job to support his family. He joined the then Imperial Bank, presently State Bank of India, and was elevated to the post of Chief Manager before he retired in 1995.

Shri Tulasi Ranjan Mishra

Sri Mishra has financially contributed to Balasore Zilla School, Town High School and Ramachandra Sanskrit College, along with a handful of religious books to their library and Shyam Sunder High School, Balasore, for the all-round development of the school.

Sri Mishra’s contribution to Balasore Zilla Schoolwill go towards the construction of a library-cum-reading room for students in the name of “HEMA GOLAK” (in remembrance of his parents). In Town High School, similarly, a science laboratory will be constructed.

Sri Mishra is hopeful that both the schools will complete the project as discussed by the school administration under Mo School Abhiyan. In addition to this, Sri Mishra has also asked the administration to keep a proper check on the premises to maintain a good ambience for the students. By retaining the prestige of schools, the school

“Mo School Abhiyan has helped build great talent. It is helping our children to be in the mainstream. As far as alumni are concerned, I believe we have the power to transform lives. No child should be deprived of education due to financial problems.”

Sri Mishra is a great inspiration for everyone. He is a published poet;a lifetime member of Fakir Mohan Sahitya Parishad Balasore and he has been actively associated with Rotary International.

can achieve a significant role in the state, feels Sri Mishra.

“Education can change a generation. I appeal to all alumni, to render service for the upliftment of the educational institutions and help the Government to provide better education. Mo School Abhiyan has helped enrich real talent and explore them to the mainstream. As far as alumni are concerned, I believe we have the power to transform a life. No child should be deprived of education for their financial problems,” says Sri Mishra who is proud to be associated with Mo School Abhiyan.

Building a LegacyThe emotional attachment that he had with his school roped him to this noble initiative. In terms of both academics and infrastructure, he has chalked out numerous plans and projects for the redevelopment of his school.

Dr. Suryakanta Mahapatra is a medical doctor by profession and philanthropist by nature. He has adopted Phatabahal Project Upper Primary School, Loisingha in the Bolangir district under the School Adoption Program of Mo School Abhiyan.

Dr. Suryakanta Mahapatra is presently working as a Medical Officer in Primary Health Centre, Kusanga. He has always believed that service to mankind is service to God. He had set his heart that someday, after establishing himself in society, he would make a difference to his alma mater.

Dr. Suryakanta Mahapatra

The emotional attachment that he had with his school roped him to this noble initiative. In terms of both academics and infrastructure, he has chalked out numerous plans and projects for the redevelopment of his school. On the infrastructural front, Sri Mahapatra has engaged himself for projects such as painting the whole school with Sambalpuri designs. In the future, he plans to set up a game zone for children where they can utilize their leisure, an artificial waterfall, smart classroom, and a playground.

Academically, he has pledged to curtail the dropout rate in the school. As the area is inhabited by many economically weaker families, children are forced to drop out of schools at an early age. Dr. Mahapatra has come forward to devote his time to counsel such families and catalyze their interest in sending their children to school. He has also lined up many initiatives like career counselling, extra classes for low academic achievers, voluntary teaching by retired teachers and so on.

Dr. Suryakanta Mahapatra is a man with a golden heart. After he lost his close friend, Dr. Soumya Ranjan Debta to COVID-19, he has been in association with the ‘Soumya Seba Foundation’ where he devotes his holidays to organising free medical camps for the poor in the interior and inaccessible parts of Bolangir district. Till date, he has organized 17 such camps.

Transforming with Talent“Rath sir and Tilotamma Madam are the pride of the school. Brilliant scholars of their time, they are gifted teachers too. No matter what day of the week it is or what time, these two gems of the schools are always at its service. The entire school is proud of their selfless services.”

The holistic development of any educational institution requires alumni involvement. Every small contribution today is sure to bear results in the long run.

Sri Ashish Kumar Rath and Smt. Tilotamma Sahu have been the key figures in elevating the academic turnaround of their school. While Sri Rath is actively engaged with the students of class 3, Smt. Sahu has taken charge of students of class 5.

They are engaged in teaching the students during school hours, it is a matter of immense pride that Sri Rath and

Shri Ashish Kumar Rath and Smt. Tilotamma Sahu

Smt. Sahu have been providing free tuition classes in the evening. As a result, academic performance has gone up. Some of the students at the school have won Pathani Samant Scholarship and National Merit Scholarship.

Sri Rath is partially visually impaired. Yet, he hasn’t let it come in the way of his commitment to his teaching profession. A brilliant scholar of his time, Sri Rath has earned high praise for his excellent teaching method. For his extraordinary contributions to the field of imparting quality education, Sri Rath has been conferred with

innumerable accolades both at the district and at the state level.

It is noteworthy to mention here that Sri Rath is not the only member of his family to have been associated with Govt UPS, Mulbar. His younger sister late Sangeeta Rath, father Sri Dayananda Rath and Uncle Sri Dayaram Rath have served the school. The Rath family is credited for their donations to the school and initiating an annual performance scholarship worth ₹50,000 in the memory of late Sangeeta Rath.

For Smt. Tilotamma Sahu, Government Upper Primary School, Mulbar is her second home. This was the very place that taught her the basics of education and today

she is passing it on to the present generation. An outstanding educator, Smt. Sahu is known for her varied teaching techniques that are an absolute favourite among the students.

Shri Kailash Bhue, the Headmaster, takes his hats off to the dedication of these two exemplary teachers at the school. “Rath sir and Tilotamma Madam are the pride of the school. Brilliant scholars of their time, they are gifted teachers too. No matter what day of the week it is or what time, these two gems of the schools are always at its service. The entire school is proud of their selfless services,”

and some of them hold high positions in the state and the central governments. One among them is the Chief Secretary of Odisha, Sri Suresh Chandra Mohapatra. Sri Mohapatra’s relentless effort for all-round development of the school has been a great motivation for Sri Deo.

He has been voluntarily teaching martial arts to the students for quite some time now and he feels it’s the least he can do to repay the debt of his alma mater. “The aim and objective of the developmental activities is to develop

cognitive, affective and psychomotor capabilities of the students through activity-based learning through sports, martial arts, music activity and counselling programmes.”

Sri Deo gives his best to share his knowledge on martial arts like Karate, Wushu, Taekwondo and Self-defence as a service for the all-round development of the students. He started with training a group of boys staying in the

school’s hostel. however, his efforts had to be suspended midway as Covid hit.Sri Deo’s scheduled line-up of future programmes includes Yoga and Pranayam training to the students which will be helpful for them to control and manage their mental stress. He plans to train the girl students in martial arts. In addition to this, he also hopes to produce state and national level players. both boys and girls, in Martial Arts that will bring glory to his alma mater.

Together We Can“Villagers of Rengalpatra donated the money received from their crop insurance cover for the redevelopment of the Government Primary School, Rengalpatra in Bargarh district. The alumni and the local community have been instrumental in successfully transforming the school.”

Rengalpatra ishome, mostly to an Adivasi population. Not long ago, the village did not have a school of its own. As a result, children had to walk miles to other villages in the nearby areas to study. This moved Sri Daitari Bariha, a farmer, who donated 40 decimalsof his farmland to build Government Primary School, Rengalpatra.

This triggered the other residents to get engaged. Slowly and steadily, people joined hands. They came together to contribute to the cause. Among them were, Biranchi Nath, Souki Sahoo, Ranjit Bariha and Bhima Nag who

Government Primary School, Rengalpatra

came forward to contributefor the holistic development of the school.

With Mo School Abhiyan, villagers became aware of its aims and objectives. The monetary grant has been judiciously utilised in various projects such as renovation of the classrooms, procurement of furniture for teachers and students, drinking water facilities, computers and internet, toilets for students and setting up of a garden.

Sri PanchananBariha, President of the Alumni Committee said, “Though we the people of this village, are

economically backward, we have never let it deter us. We follow principles of simple living which enables us to contribute monetarily for the transformation of the school.” Briefing about the future plans, he added, “We have many activities and projects lined up for the school.

If the government approves, we would be more than happy.”

Now, students are happy to go to school. Dropout rates have fallen impressively. The Rengalpatra village has set the benchmark for others.

With his Alma Mater, Forever“I believe that every individual should think positively and selflessly for their respective alma maters’ improvement. They should also contribute for the same, be it monetary, in-kind or service. I appeal to the people that they should come forward and support this noble cause and inspire the people around them for the same.”

Sri Sankarshan Sahu, a resident of Bellaguntha block of Ganjam district, has been working as the head peon of GT High School in Ganjam since 1992. Sri Sahu, a man in his fifties, is a proud alumnus of the school known for his industrious nature and sincerity.

GT High School, Bellaguntha was established in the year 1948. Spread over a vast area of 25 acres, the school has been through many ups and downs. It was under the able leadership of the then headmaster Nabaghana Patra that developments began to happen. Until 1974, the school managing committee handled the developmental aspects of the school, but later the school came under the direct control of the state government. Sri Sahu has

Shri Sankarshan Sahu

witnessed the entire cycle before his eyes. Big or small, he has pushed himself forward whenever and wherever the topic of development of the school was in the frame. From travelling places to meeting alumni and new people in a quest to notify them about the state government’s Mo School Abhiyan and the power it holds to transform their alma mater, Sankarshan was consistently in the front.

“I believe that every individual should think positively and selflessly for their alma mater’s improvement. They should contribute for the same, be it monetary, in-kind or through service. I appeal to people that they should come forward and support this noble cause and inspire people around them for the same. Time changes, but memories

remain forever. We can bring the glory of the lost days back into the school. Though it has been ages since we left the school to march ahead in life, it has always held its arms open to welcome its students.”

When his school received the proposed grants for developmental purposes under Mo School Abhiyan, there was no delay in execution. Within a short period, the school administration constructed a smart classroom, an auditorium, a library, a computer classroom and a

playground. The school administration has an intuitive vision for what the future holds. As far as the developmental projects are concerned, many initiatives are lined up. Procurement of furniture, installation of water purifier, a basketball court and more smart classrooms are on the anvil.

Alumni like Sri Sankarshan Sahu are an inspiration to many. His positivity is spreading; he is a true gift to society.

Mother shows the Day“The hands that rock the cradle are the hands that rule the world,” said famous poet William Ross Wallace. The epitome of strength and love, a mother brings the best out of her children. A child’s outlook towards societyis shaped by upbringing and a mother is the one that plays a vital role. This is the inspiring story of Smt. Sujata Mahapatra.

Mitasmita, Monalisha, Samapika and Swagatika Mahapatra, daughters of Smt. Sujata Mahapatra and late Sri Mrutyunjaya Mahapatra are the alumni of Govt. UG High School, Khandugaon in Nayagarh. Smt. Sujata Mahapatra, along with her four daughters, have contributed for the construction of a Mid-Day Meal hall under Mo School Abhiyan. The family has donated a generous amount from their savings in memory of their beloved Sri Mrutyunjaya Mahapatra.

Despite the busyness of life, the Mahapatra family did not forget the contribution of Khandugaon Govt. UG High

Smt Sujata Mahapatra

School. Not just the four daughters, but their father was also actively involved in the development of the school because they valued education above anything else.

The sisters along with their mother have been instrumental in various developmental projects of the school. Recently a playground of nearly an acre has been developed for the students with the help of villagers and their late father. One building under Rashtriya Madhyamika Siksha Abhiyan was also constructed. As far as projects for the future are concerned, construction of a library and a computer lab for the students is on the drawing board.

Talking about their motivation for this noble cause, the sisters said that their parents always motivated them to contribute to the well-being of society. It was the philanthropic outlook of the parents that shaped the attitude of the sisters.

When asked about her message for the readers, Smt. Sujata Mahapatra said, “Mo School Abhiyan is a unique programme run by the government of Odisha. We request

all alumni and community members to contribute for the benefit of the students and development of their school, taking full advantage of it.”

Khandugaon Primary School was established in the year 1952 and upgraded to a High School in 2008. Students from six nearby villages are benefitting from the school. The school is well-known for producing many talented and renowned people who have excelled in all walks of life.

A Diamond in the Coal“There has been a striking difference in our school ever since it has been associated with the Mo School Abhiyan. It is our duty to make our school, as well as the students, stand up to mark so that it will create quality citizens for our nation.”

The legendary Indian Businessman and the Founder of Infosys, Narayan Murthy once said, “Nobody is bothered about an institution more than its alumni”. Smt. Namita Das is a shining example of that statement. She has made all the effort to make her alma mater the best in the district and among the best in the State. With a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in science, Smt. Das is a proud alumnus of Colliery High School, Talcher.

Over the 27 years of association with the school, she has contributed through her hard work and dedication for the development of the school as well as the academic excellence of students. After the introduction of Mo School Abhiyan in Colliery High School, she played a crucial role in connecting alumni with each other and their school in pursuit of making a positive difference.

Smt. Namita Das

Thanks to her efforts, in the first phase, an amount of ₹2,05,501 and in the second, another chunk of ₹43,200 were collected under Mo School Abhiyan with twice over matching grants. By utilising this fund, a lot many developmental activities have been undertaken by the school administration. Within a short period, the school is equipped with a cycle shed, separate toilets for boys and girls, a water tank and washbasins. A mini projector has also been installed in the school for imparting skill-based education to the students. Tables, chairs and desks were replaced with new ones to give a modern look to the classrooms. Lab equipment, notice boards, whiteboards and CCTVs have also been installed in the school premises. Striding ahead in the field of digitalisation, the school administration has also introduced smart classes for the all-round development of the students.

Smt. Das who has seen the growth of school ever since she was a student at the school has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Mo School Abhiyan. “There has been a striking difference in the school ever since it has come in association with the Mo School Abhiyan. But due to the ongoing pandemic, many a programme have been halted. But we are hopeful that someday when the situation normalises, we will be back on track. We must make our school, as well as the students, stand up to mark so that it will create quality citizens for our nation.” She has been instrumental in every project undertaken so far. From conception to completion, she has taken the lead role.

Colliery High School, Talcher is one of the distinguished schools in the entire district of Angul. Established in the year 1966, the school has produced many students who have earned respect in their respective fields. Initially started as a school for the children of the Coalfields employees, the school now hosts hundreds of students of the nearby villages. Students of this school have achieved positions in the field of academics, sports and co-curricular activities. The school administration has buckled up to commence the implementation of the next phased programmes of Mo School Abhiyan.

One at a TimeThere was a time when the University High School had no designated Mathematics teacher for senior classes. This gave Smt. Panda a chance to repaying the debt to her alma mater A well-connected alumni network is imperative for an educational institution’s future prospects. In this 21st Century when networking is achieved within a few clicks, converting your connections into meaningful resources still remains a challenge. University High School has shown the way.

Smt. Dharashree Panda, an alumnus of University High School, VaniVihar is one among the successful past students who have tenaciously engaged in the school’s development process. Smt. Panda completed her schooling in the year 1995. She went ahead to complete her post-graduation in Mathematics and master’s in computer science from the Utkal University. Consequently, she served as a lecturer for few years.

Her alma mater, University High School is situated inside the campus of Utkal University. The students of this long-

Smt. Dharashree Panda

standing, prestigious institute have achieved many laurels in the past. Speaking about her alma mater Smt. Panda proudly says, “We had great teachers in the school who gave us quality education; they bestowed moral values. There are so many memories that I have with my school and with Mo School Abhiyan it has become possible on my part to pay off some of the debt of the school.”

“I believe in quality education rather than just fancy infrastructure. Teachers must have a genuine interest in teaching. Every teacher must be emotionally involved

with their students. In the present scenario, students are forced to perform well in academics, but no one cares about the emotional pressure these tiny buds go through. A teacher must help the student to come forward, share their minds and then make their dreams a reality.”

There was a time when the University High School had no designated Mathematics teacher for the senior students. This gave Smt. Panda a chance to repay the debt to her alma mater.

“I have taught Mathematics for the students of class 9 for some days. I would like to take more classes if time permits. I have also contributed a small amount of money towards Mo School Abhiyan for the development of infrastructure in our School.” Apart from the financial contribution, she is also an active member of the school’s

alumni association and participates in the process of every developmental activity.”

After coming in association with the Mo School Abhiyan, the infrastructure of the school has also undergone a sea change. A new cycle stand has been built for the students. A toilet for girls has been constructed. A beautiful garden has been developed in front of the school. But the pandemic has taken a toll on the further development of the school. The COVID-19 crisis has led to a standstill situation in Mo School Abhiyan’s progress in school. Though Smt. Panda admits that more work remains to be done, but together, the alumni and school authorities can bring the best for the students. It is only a matter of time that University High School, VaniVihar will shine again when the clouds of COVID-19 drifts away.

Man of Vision Alumni groups must consistently strengthen the foundation of their alma mater, improve the instructional quality that may have suffered over the longrun. Values that alumni transfer from one generation to the next, make great impact in building character and confidence”

A past student at Panchayat Government High School, Roth, Sri Ramesh Chandra Patel, knows the importance of alumni involvement in the school. He is the current president of the School Management Committee. Talking about the journey of Mo School Abhiyan in his school, Sri Patel said, “Complying with the request of the headmaster, initially I motivated a few ex-students to develop the school infrastructure and organised the School Management Committee. I reached out to the contractors in the area and initiated the reconstruction work on my own.”

Shri Ramesh Chandra Patel

The 1992 batch alumnus has been guiding his batchmates, other alumni and members of the School Management Committee to connect, collaborate and contribute for the holistic development of the school.

“My vision is to transform the school into a model school of our district and state. To make students future-ready and digitally smart. We will create smart classrooms next year. Construction of an upper floor, library hall and girl’s common room are the next projects of the school under Mo School Abhiyan.

Apart from these planned projects, already numerous developmental activities have been taken up by the school. Some of them include construction of new classrooms with a science hall, water supply with solar pump system, construction of a hall and school beautification, a mini-park with lawn, a pandal for performances, cycle-stand Mid-Day Meal hall, installation of CCTV camera and procurement of sports equipment.

Sri Patel is certain that with the collaborative efforts of the school administration and the alumni, Panchayat

Government High School, Roth, can achieve a lot in the future.

“The projects that are on halt now will resume shortly once the pandemic situation subsides. But the alumni are constantly connected over the phone; they discuss the initiatives every now and then. We are hopeful that in the coming days, the dedicated efforts of the alumni and the school administration are sure to bear fruits”.

Bridge to Tomorrow“You may leave the school, but the school will never leave you. Without this educational institution, I believe none of the students could have tasted success they have, in their respective fields in life. We have a debt to repay.”

To Sri Pradeep Hota, George High School, Bargarh will always remain deep within his sense of self even as he has personally gone way beyond its precincts. He is a Reader in Education at the Women’s College, Bargarh. Sri Hota has achieved academic excellence over time. In the year 2001, he took the lead as a resource person at the International Academic Forum, Osaka in Japan.

“Mo School Abhiyan has offered a unique opportunity for

Shri Pradeep Hota

the alumni of the school to reconnect with the memories they may have left far behind. When we do that, it brings out the best in us to make a difference to things around us, starting with the school. There should not be any gap between society and a school. Past students can build a bridge.”

The school has been engaged with Mo School Abhiyan since 2018. It has received financial assistance of

₹1,37,000 in the first phase and ₹4,54,000 in the second phase. In addition, with the government’s 2x matching grant, the school has received a total of ₹4,11,000 in the first phase and ₹13,63,000 in the second phase. Among the developmental activities undertaken by the school administration under Mo School Abhiyan, smart classrooms have come up, attracting students from the schools in the vicinity as well. In the coming days, creating

a section of books onleaders like Gandhi and collecting work of great authors like Manoj Das will be taken up.

George High School, located in the Sadar block of Bargarh district, was established in the year 1914. The school was named after King George V of England. It is one of the oldest schools in the district and the state. The legendary school, which is over 126 years old, has produced many leaders of the society.

No Child Left BehindThe school administration has decided to help poor students of the local area in improving their educational abilities. Meritorious students at the school are being given additional inputs to nurture their future by the school.

Sri Suvendu Mohanty, a multi-faceted personality, at present practicing Criminal Law in Odisha High Court is one of the distinguished alumni of Jobra Municipal High School, Cuttack. A graduate of Ravenshaw College, he is the current secretary of the Old Boys Association of Jobra Municipal High School and the convenor of ‘Odisha Pragati Mancha’, a social organization.

His motivation for doing something for his alma mater was not a spur of the moment decision. “I’ve always tried to make our old students come forward and contribute towards making our school a leading educational institution in the state so that it can be cited as a model Government school that imparts quality education,” says Sri Suvendu Mohanty.

In the year 2017, Jobra Municipal High School completed 50 years of its glorious journey. On the auspicious occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the school, the school administration, along with the combined efforts of the alumni, created the Old Boys Association to celebrate the

Shri Suvendu Mohanty

event at the school premises. Sri Suvendu Mohanty was appointed as Secretary.

The Old Boys Association received an amount of ₹10.10 lakh which was planned to be spent on the development of the school. With that thought, the Old Boys Association donated that amount under Mo School Abhiyan. The contribution along with the 2x matching grant from the state government has been judiciously used for the integrated development of infrastructure and academics.

The association has conducted health camps for both teachers and students. It has taken up plantation drives on the premises of the school. The school has started prioritising different activities to attract students. Periodically, the school administration, in collaboration with the alumni members, has been conducting cultural activities, sports, drama along with different competitive events that provide valuable lessons and training to the students for their future.

Sri Suvendu Mohanty has played a key role in the development of the school in every sector, be it academic, infrastructure or co-curricular activities. The vision is very clear: to convert the school into a smart school that stands at par with any other private school in the area.

Sri Mohanty believes that no students hould be left behind in the race of acquiring education. Education, being a fundamental right of the children, should never be compromised due to lack of resources and calibre.

“It has become a status symbol for parents to enrol their children in private schools, for they believe that

government schools are far behind in terms of nurturing a secure future of their child. But programmes like Mo School Abhiyan have changed the entire perception regarding government schools. Today, the academic results of government schools are as good as that of private schools. Alumni of government schools are well established in every corner of the globe. So, I would like to request the alumni of Jobra Municipal High School to come forward and do their bit in the redevelopment of their alma mater. With combined efforts, the day is not far away when no child will be left behind in quenching the thirst for education”

Past imperfect but ensuring a perfect future“The smile on their faces, now sitting on the benches, is priceless. I feel so satisfied.”“The alumni must guide the children of today towards a prosperous tomorrow. Their experience can bear amazing results when shared with the young. Alumni must come forward wholeheartedly, together, to engage in such programmes.”

Shri Dillip Kumar Jena

An alumnus of the Government Upper Primary School, Bhejiput in Bhanjanagar block of Ganjam district, Sri Dillip Kumar Jena is an optimistic man whose continuous effort for the holistic development of his alma mater has made him one of the celebrated people in the entire block. Saddened by the sorry plight of the students who had to sit on the floor in their classrooms due to the unavailability of desks and benches, Sri Jena has helped the tiny tots under district admin’s ‘Tale Basibaku Na’ campaign.

After many consultations with the school administration, the monetary contribution with the “2x” matching grant, was immediately utilised for the procurement of desks and benches for the students. Now, a happy class its on those

benches. The smiles portray the sense of accomplishment Sri Jena has achieved.

This is not where the association of Sri Jena with the school comes to an end. As per the school administration, Sri Jena is anactive alumnus who has always come forward for the school’s redevelopment in every way. Some of these activities include beautifying the school garden, procurement of books for the library, construction of a new meeting hall, toilets, and repairof the existing classrooms.

A philanthropist at heart, Sri Jena believes that investments in school infrastructure play an enabling role in making education accessible. “During our times,

classes, humanitarian services and motivational talks with the students are also a part of this programme. Gradually, the alumni association of the school is gathering pace and the alumni network is getting bigger. The day is not far away when our school will finally have all its alumni on board who will witness the school’s transformation” concludes Sri Jena.

Established in 1959, Govt Upper Primary School, Bhejiput is situated in Bhanjanagar block, approximately 170kilometres away from the state capital. The school has a remarkable track record of producing great scholars every academic year. Ever since its association with Mo School Abhiyan, the school has undergone quite a few developmental changes. Not only has the school’s infrastructure seen transformation, but also the academics have experienced a noticeable turnaround.

we hardly had so many facilities. As students, we had to think if at all we could ever compete in the world when we grow updue to the lack of resources in those days. But with our determination, I can say that all alumni of the school have been able to reach milestones; we have proudly established ourselves as respected citizens of the society,”

“Our experience combined with the prospects of the current generation can bear amazing results. Hence, it becomes a matter of urgent attention that the alumni come forward wholeheartedly, together, to engage in such programmes. Earlier we had no common platform to bind the alumni with the school and its students. But thanks to the launch of Mo School Abhiyan, we have a great opportunity” adds Sri Jena.

“Many alumni believe that only monetary aid can help redevelop our schools. This is not true. Voluntarily taking
