design in the news
TRANSCRIPT
Design in the NewsAssignment: analyse today’s news from a design viewpoint
Issues
1. A clear (though inaccurate) increase of cases after a crackdown, thus cheating may not have changed –‘enforcement stepped up’
2. Design of coupons is flawed: relies on good will of user to tear tabs. This design tempts, almost encourages cheating
3. Technology solutions proposed (electronic parking systems)
4. User quoted: “if you can afford to pay for a car and maintain it, you shouldn’t be scrimping on a few dollars of parking fees”

Design Insights
1. How you measure matters and can give an erroneous impression of change of behaviour
2. Design should target errors and ‘temptations’, preventing or discouraging cheating
3. Very often people use “more technology to solve bad design”
4. As in smartphone apps, users are willing to spend big money in products but less willing to pay little money in associated services
