Did you know that the South East of England has less water available per person than some hot Mediterranean countries? The Water Design Challenge is a new initiative to get Key Stage 3 students interested and involved in the issue of water conservation and associated cuts in energy use. The Challenge complements the National Curriculum and provides an exciting opportunity for the whole school. It aims to enhance teaching and learning by encouraging students to use design processes and thinking across the curriculum to solve an important problem. It also provides a structured framework for connecting your school with professional designers and water experts.

The Challenge will ask students two questions:

About this manual

This manual, along with an online tool for measuring your school’s water footprint, is designed to help find the answers. It is a toolkit of teaching resources for running the Water Design Challenge (or the ‘WDC’). It gives guidance about the practicalities of taking part in the project, such as how to gain access to professional designers and water conservation specialists, and contains activity suggestions along with background information about design, and the issues of water conservation and supply in the South East of England.

Who’s behind it?

The WDC has been created by the Design Council in association with Southern Water with the aim of changing people’s behaviour and producing positive results in the realm of sustainable action by reducing water consumption. We believe that this can be achieved through design and that the Challenge gives secondary school students an exciting opportunity to really make a difference. Sustainable design can change lives for the better and this project gives young people a great chance to do just that.

The Double DiamondStudents are encouraged to see the six Water Design Challenge stages as part of a design process the Design Council refer to as the ‘Double Diamond’.

The design process has a number of stages, where ideas are created, developed and refined until a workable solution is arrived at. The Double Diamond is defined across four areas: discover, define, develop and deliver.

Discover How can we learn more about the problem? What do we know about the current situation, and what do we need to change?

Define

Which aspect of the problem do we feel is the most important to tackle? Let’s start to think about what ideas or plans might best help tackle it.

Develop How can we make our idea work? How can we test and improve it?

Deliver How can we make/carry out our idea? How can we make sure it works? How can we best communicate our proposition?

School project management

Schools will be supported in implementing their

project by their own WDC co-ordinator provided

by the Design Council and Southern Water.

This person will act as a link with Southern Water

and the Design Council for the Challenge and

draw together everyone involved in the work.

Your WDC co-ordinator will provide you with

up to five days project support time, and will

help you in: planning the project; managing

co-ordination with designers; evaluation of

the project; co-ordinating input into the Water

Design Challenge online blog; and supporting

general delivery as and when appropriate.

Success is most likely if the following are put in place:

The involvement of at least one

member of senior management.

The awareness of all teaching staff

and students of the aim, timing

and breadth of the project.

The involvement of ancillary staff,

governors, parents and visitors through

communications devised by the students.

A sufficient commitment in terms of

curriculum time across different subjects

for the KS3 students involved — five

days is the broad recommendation.
