inthisboulder.Amazingly,itsrootswereabletofindsufficientnutrientsandwatertogrowintoamatureshadetree.Thedestructiveemeraldashborer,nowfirmlyestablishedinthisarea,couldbecomeachallengeforthetree,sowearecloselymonitoringitshealth.
5. Children’s Discovery Garden Aspecialplaceforchildrenofallagestogettheirhands
dirtyandwetwhileexercisingtheirimaginationsandlearningaboutfoodcropsandflowers.AcolorfulplayhousestructurewasdesignedbylocalartistAllenTimmons.
6. Rain Garden Thisgardenisavegetatedbuffer,a“livingfilter”through
whichsedimentcarriedbysurfacewaterrunofffromourparkinglotisremoved.Thecapturedwaterslowlypercolatesthroughthesoilintothegroundwater.Wehaveplantedshrubsthatdon’tmind“wetfeet”andprovideahealthyhabitatandfoodformanybirds.

7. Fitzpatrick Conservatory Thishistoriccurvedglassconservatoryishometoa
containerizedcollectionofsucculentsandtropicalplantsandisopentothepublicyearround.OurBulbShowfillsthehousewithbloomsinMarch.

beharnessedtoprovideheateveninthecoldestBerkshirewinters.Builtintoahillside,thegreenhouseisinsulatedfromarcticwindsonthenorthside.Inside,waterinrowsofblackplasticbarrelsisheatedbythesunduringtheday,andheatisslowlyreleasedatnight,keepingthegreenhousewarmenoughtooverwinterplantshardyto32∞F.Nootherheatsourceisneeded.

aninformalsettinganchoredbyastonemillwheel.IncollaborationwithDavidAustinRoses,BBGistrialingabeautifulassortmentofnewEnglishrosesthatareknownfortheircolor,perfume,andabilitytorepeatbloomevenaftertheirfirstspectacularshowinJune.

28. New Wave Garden EmbracingecologicalprinciplesthatwerepopularizedbyPiet
OudolfandotherEuropeandesigners,thislow-maintenancegardencontainsplantswelladaptedtoitssiteandsoilconditions.Despiteitslushgrowth,thegardenrequireslittleweedingandnowatering.Thevigorousplantsformdenseplantcommunities,oftenself-seedingandspreadingnaturally.Ourgardenersleavethespentfoliagestandingallwinter.Withsnowandfrost,thiscreatesbeautifulscenesandprovidesfoodandshelterforwildlife.Inearlyspring,thegardenisquicklyrenovatedandcutbackbeforenewgrowthstarts.

invitesexplorationofalargemeadowandwoodlandedge.Throughcarefulintervention,weplantoenrichthemeadowecologywithincreasingnumbersofwildflowerspecies,whileinvasiveweedswillbeselectivelyremovedtocreateanewbalanceofplants.

BBG’sHerbAssociatevolunteergroupgrowtheculinaryherbsusedinmakingproductsthataresoldintheBBGShop.Cropsincludeannualherbssuchasbasilandmarjoram,perennialherbslikelavenderandmint,andevenedibleflowers.Theseingredientsareturnedintodeliciousmustards,vinegarsandherbmixes.
