PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONBenjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine is a small, safe school located in desirable midtown Detroit directly across from the De-troit Medical Center that offers unique experiences for students interested in science and medicine. We talk about an “8 year” college prep curricu-lum because the expectation is that students not only finish high school within four years but also advance to and graduate from a post-secondary institution. We also boast partnerships with the Detroit Medical Center, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Henry Ford Health Systems, Wayne County Community College, Linked Learning, and Michigan Future Schools along with other nota-ble businesses and organizations. Students learn through work-based experiences, project-based learning, seminar/mentoring relationships with teachers, and small group study. College and medical campus tours, job shadowing, Future DOcs, and Future Nurses programs give students further opportunities to explore careers in science and medicine.

Does your teen have a love for science and dream of working in a medical profession?

Detroit Public Schools offers unique programs at two of its high schools that allow students to get a head start on their careers while preparing them for higher learning.

At Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine, and at Cody Medicine and Community Health Academy, students gain exposure to the medical field through opportunities like job shadowing, internships and field trips. Thanks to support and partnerships with organizations, businesses, hospitals and colleges in the Detroit area, students are able to gain real-world knowledge.

Plus, both schools use a college preparatory curriculum while giving students the chance to earn college credits while they are still in high school. To learn more about these schools and what they can do for your child, visit their websites at BenCarsonHS.com and DetroitK12.org/Schools/codymch.

What Do DPS High Schools Have To Offer?

SAFE ROUTES TO & FROM SCHOOLDetroit Public Schools Police Department partners with community members, schools, volunteers, neighbors, businesses, nonprofit organizations and other law enforcement agencies for Safe Routes to Schools initiatives along key walking and bus routes each morning and afternoon.

Brothers on Patrol, which provides Eyes and Earsassistance at Cody and other high schools, has beendoing this for more than 20 years.

AAA of Michigan even donated $28,000 during the2013-2014 school year to DPS to help expand the district’s volunteer patrol program to keep studentssafe when traveling to and from school each day.

From chess to robotics to automotive engineering or science enrichment at the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the programs available to DPS students through the district’s STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs are wide-ranging. STEM programs present an opportunity for high school students to apply classroom lessons to real-world careers.

As an example, Mazda Motorsportsrevved up high schoolers with its highly acclaimed national educational outreach program presented to more than 700 DPS students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School.

Designed to encourage the nation’s high school students to consider studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subject areas, Mazda’s Racing Accelerates CreativeEducation (R.A.C.E.) program engaged DPS students from 10 different schools just days before the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race held during the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix on Belle Isle — yet another event that hundreds of DPS students attend each year to make the connection between STEM learning and motorsports.
