AsoneofthelargestandmostdiverseengineeringandenvironmentalsciencegroupsintheUKwehaveanunrivalledabilitytoprovideanintegrated,wholesystemsapproachtoengineeringchallenges.

Ballast migration

IncreasedtrainoperatingspeedsontheWestCoastMainLinehavecoincidedwiththesporadicoccurrenceofballastmigration.Ourresearchwillhelptoidentifythefundamentalmechanismsofthisphenomenonandgiveinsightsintothemosteffectivemaintenanceinterventions.

Discrete element modelling of the micro-mechanics of ballast

Bydevelopingacomprehensiveunderstandingofthemechanicsofballastattheparticlescale,ourresearchwillmakepossibletherationaldesignofresilient,low-maintenanceballastedtrack.

Modelling random fibre reinforcement of ballast

Addingrandomfibrereinforcementisapromisingtechniqueforincreasingtheresilienceofballastedtrack.Togetamoredetailedunderstandingofthemicromechanicsinvolved,aseriesofnumericalanalysesisbeingcarriedoutusingSouthampton’suniquepotentialparticlebaseddiscreteelementmethod.

Using computed tomography to understand ballast fouling

Ballastfoulingadverselyaffectsdrainage,increasingtherateoftrackgeometrydegradationandreducingtheeffectivenessoftamping.Wearedevelopingasoundscientificunderstandingofthemechanismsinvolved,toenablethedesignofmoreresilienttrack.
