5th September, 2012
Dear Parents, Fathers Day I certainly hope all the fathers were treated to a wonderful day last Sunday for Fathers Day. I take the opportunity to thank our tremendous parents who ensured your children were able to select a special gift for you. It takes a lot of organisation and time to get the stall up and running and our wonderful team of parents– Nicole Kendt, Gail Murphy, Belinda Haslett, Amanda Kirk, Clare Isle, Gayle Saly, Preety Sharma and Storm Jones certainly did a great job. Thank you on behalf of our Kilberry Valley school community. ICAS Spelling and Writing Competitions Congratulations to all students who stayed after school to sit the University of New South Wales ICAS Spelling and Writing competitions last term. Recently we received the results and below are the names of students who performed particularly well in each of the tests. For Spelling they are: For Writing they are: Year 3: Distinction: Sasuni Year 3: Distinction: Nethmi & Sasuni Year 4: Distinction: Kavin Year 4: Distinction: Kavin, Jurel & Amandi Year 5: Distinction: Dilshan Year 5: Distinction: Nihar Year 6: Distinction: Kevindu Year 6: Distinction: Shaneshi Multi Cultural Day WOW! What a tremendous community day we had last Wednesday as we celebrated Multicultural Day at Kilberry Valley. The school was awash in colour and the food – my goodness, I have never see such a variety of differing foods to try. I did feel it was my duty though to try many samples as I visited the classrooms – probably not a good idea for my waistline but there was a huge range of flavours to be enjoyed so I couldn’t resist. Thanks to everyone for the effort you went to, to be able to exhibit and display aspects of the Australian culture along with wonderful facets of the many cultures evident in our school community. As I went to the rooms I was thrilled to see the students trying new food and being very interested in the clothing and traditions that were explained by various students, parents and staff. HPV Sponsors The HPV team are getting into the serious training. We have the new machine and each member has had their first ride in it. It will prove to be a fast one and the team is now trying to select an appropriate name for it. We will inform you when that has been decided. Once again I draw your attention to the very generous sponsors who have greatly assisted the team in their preparation and the ability to upgrade the vehicle to give the team the best possible chance of success at Maryborough in November. We really appreciate our sponsors listed below. If you require services they supply please give them a ring and tell them you are from Kilberry Valley Primary School and you heard of their generosity towards our school: RSP Australia, Southern Street Machiners, Humanitarian Clowns Inc and Paul Rooney Transport, Bark King, Stevo’s Gourmet Meats, Seafood & Charcoal Plus, Cablelink, Bridgestone, Coles Hampton Park. Footy Day This is always a fun day at Kilberry Valley with the traditional Footy Parades, recess and lunch activities for the students and the annual Staff versus Students footy match. Now we have a decent oval I am sure we will see some stunning skills, lightning fast reflexes, high flying marks, and amazing accuracy when shooting for goal - I am sure the students will do well also. We will be holding our Footy Day Parades at 10.20 for the Prep to Two’s and 11.40 for the Three to Sixes. Feel free to come along and join in the fun. Lost Property Currently we are sorting the lost property and there will be un-named items for sale each day during the final week of term at 8.45 – 9.15 in the old gym at $2.00 per item. Footy News The real fun begins!! It’s been many years since the Hawk have finished on the top of the ladder – and they did it in style!! Friday night should be a tremendous match with Collingwood and Hawthorn both showing great form at present. My prediction – the Hawks (obviously) by 13 points after a very hard fought match. I hope the weather is not too warm to wear the scarf on Monday!!!! Have a great week and keep smiling!
It has been an incredibly busy time in Year 5JR this term! In amongst our musical rehearsals (our performance is looking great!), maths investigations, writing information reports, celebrating Multicultural Day, and investigating different cultures, we had a day at the Narre Warren South P-12 on Monday August 27. We got to experience what it would be like at secondary school, which for us, isn’t that far off. Here’s a taste of what we did.
In the science lab, testing to see what boils quicker, fresh or
salt water.
Sara-We found the fresh water boiled quicker than the salt water.
I really enjoyed being in the science lab.
Karen-Sara and I were boiling fresh water, which boiled quicker
than the salt water. I liked wearing the lab coats!
In the food technology room, we made vegetarian
pizzas. Alvin-my pizza was very tasty it had lots of pineapple,
tomato and plenty of cheese. Sunny-my pizza had everything on it, plus extra cheese.
It tasted delicious! Shawn-on my pizza I had cheese, pineapple and tomato.
Mine tasted delicious too!
Making juggling balls using balloons
and bird seed.
Linuka-It was pretty hard to make the
juggling balls as it was really fiddly to put
the top of the balloon over the top of the
bottle. I still enjoyed this activity.
In the woodwork room we made a plastic pen holder. Kesha-The pencil holder was easy to make as there were plen-ty of people to help us. I enjoyed this activity and I’m using my new pencil holder at school.
We had an ‘awesome’ day!

WELFARE CORNER
Working together as a family
Discussing things as a family is often very
helpful for dealing with concerns and negotiating
solutions to conflicts before they get bigger.
Talking together provides an opportunity to
clarify roles and expectations.
Be sure to talk about what is working well
in family relationships and not just
the difficulties.
Build trust in family discussions by respecting
and listening to everyone’s views without
judging or putting them down.
Encourage children as well as adults to hear
and understand each other’s
views and needs.
Discussing things as a family can
encourage children as well as adults to solve
problems creatively.
Listening and talking
It is easier for others to listen and accept your
point of view when the way you say it
communicates respect and caring.
Small things like saying
“How was your day?” and really listening to
the answer, make a difference to the quality of
communication in families.
Saying ‘sorry’ when you make a mistake or
hurt someone’s feelings is also really important.
