    MethodsWhat should be there?

    Research design Research sample

The content of the intervention (when you haveexperimental design)

Research instrument Research procedures / Data collection

    Data analysis

Research designWhat do you do in the research?

How are you going to answer your researchquestion(s)?

    9/18

Example The study is a pre-test posttest experimental research,

in which an intervention is developed to observe theeffects. The sample was randomly assigned into anexperimental group and a control group.

The study measured student achievement in English

    through pretest and posttest.

Research population and sampleWho is your population / sample?

How are you going to take your sample?

    How many sample?

    11/18

The content in your interventionWhat do you do during the intervention period and

    how?

Do you have any supporting documents during theintervention period?

What roles do you have during the interventionperiod?

    12/18

    Example

The intervention is aimed at blablaba Teaching materials are developed to facilitate

students learning in blablabla, which areimplemented in 8 meetings (2 meetings / week). One

meeting is about 80 minutes. The following is the schedule for those 8 meetings:

Research instrumentWhat instrument do you have?

How do you develop / get the instrument(s)?

Did you do a pilot study for your instrument(s)? Did you analyze the validity and the reliability of your

    instrument(s)?

  • 8/10/2019 Developing Your Research Methods

    14/18

    Example

The instrument in this study is a test of English,

which is used in both pretest and posttest. In the beginning, there were 30 items in the test. Due

to the reliability analysis during the pilot study, only20 items are retained in this study. In the pilot study,

the reliability coefficient () is .65. In this study, these20 item have better reliability coefficient (= .70).

The content validity analysis shows that these 20items represent all the course objectives as stated in

the KTSP of English grade blabla

    Research procedure / Data

collectionWhat steps do you take in doing your research?

    Depending on your design

    Experimental design: pretest

    intervention

    posttest

    Example

    17/18

Data analysisAfter you collect all of your data, what are going to

    do?

Are you going to work with a software (SPSS) ormanually?

What statistical limitation are you going to use?

    Significance level = .05

Example The scores gathered during pretest and posttest in

both control and experimental groups are computedin SPSS program.

Prior to the data analysis, necessary actions to makethe data ready for the analysis are performed. Thoseactions include blablabla. The t-test for the pretestscores of both experimental and control groups reportno difference between the two. Thus, both groups arehomogeneous, which is an important condition in the

    experimental research.

In analyzing the data, t-test was used to compare theposttest scores.
