arcHiVeSFinn Harps V Derby County Uefa Cup 1976 By Bartley Ramsay

Finn Harps third foray into

Europe was to face English

team Derby County in the

UEFA Cup for the 1976/77

Season. Harps had qualified

for the UEFA Cup by virtue of

having finished second in the

League title race, four points

behind Dundalk during the

1975/76 season.

To give you some idea of

Derby’s pedigree at the

time, they had won the

English First Division title in

both 1972 and 1975. In the

European Cup of 1972/73

Derby had reached the semi-

finals before being beaten

by Italian side Juventus in

controversial circumstances.

Their team was packed full

of internationals including

England’s Charlie George,

David Nish, Roy McFarland,

Colin Todd and Kevin Hector;

Scotland’s Bruce Rioch, Archie

Gemmill and Welshmen Rod

Thomas and Leighton James.

The draw was made in Zurich

on Tuesday 6th July and

the Irish Times headline the

following day was “Finn Harps

get plum draw with Derby

County”. Harps Chairman

Fran Fields commented

“Mindful of our most recent

assignment in European

football when we had to travel

to Turkey, it was a tremendous

relief to discover that we

had come out of the drum

against Derby. Not only are

the travelling expenses lighter

but I consider that Derby,

in the mood, are capable of

beating any team in Britain.

That alone should guarantee

a big crowd at Ballybofey

irrespective or what happens

in the first game at the

Baseball Ground.”

Harps did make a request to

Derby County to have the

first leg played in Ballybofey

but got a negative reply on

Thursday 9th July as the then

Derby County manager Dave

MacKay refused the request.

The Scotsman insisted that the

tie remain as stipulated in the

draw, with the first game to be

played at the Baseball Ground.

Derby had made a poor start to

the season and a crowd of only

13,353 turned up on the 15th

September 1976 to witness

what would turn out to be the

game that the County side set

their club scoring record.

Harps conceded their first in

the sixth minute, when Hector

rifled in a low left footed shot

to the far corner from Charlie

George’s pass. The rest of the

scoring came as follows:

12 mins A flick scored by

Rioch after Healy had only half

stopped a through pass from

George; 20 mins James rattled

in number three after Gemill

had sent a thunderbolt against

the upright; 22 mins Hector

breasted the ball down before

scoring past Murray following

a Gemill/Rioch build-up; 24

mins Gemmill took Murray’s

roll-out off Stephenson passed

to George who slammed the

ball home; 27 mins George

headed James’ cross in off bar;

28 mins James scored with

a rising shot from Gemmill

pass; 37 mins Hector hit the

net from an acute angle after

mix up between Murray and

O’Doherty; 39 mins Hector

may 2013 DFlMagazine 5

Page 6: DFL Magazine Issue 8 May

knocked in the rebound when

Murray blocked George’s shot

into his path; 64 mins.—Hector

turned and placed the ball in

the corner past the despairing

dive of Murray after receiving

a pass from Gemmill;

69 mins. James went on a solo

run through the middle of the

Harps defence before beating

the advancing Murray to

score; 76 mins George scored

again with a superb shot

from another pass from the

irrepressible Gemmill.

The nearest Harps came to

scoring was after fifty eight

minutes when Hilary Carlyle

touched a Tony O’Doherty

pass into the path of Brendan

Bradley. Unfortunately the big

Derryman couldnt get a good

enough contact on the ball.

Afterwards Harps Chairman

Fran Fields said “There’s no

two ways about it. but

we were totally outclassed”.

Luckless Goalkeeper Gerry

Muray said afterwards “It was

like a nightmare out there.

The speed of the ball coming

off the wet surface was like

greased lightning”.

The Irish Independent

reported on the game

“TOTALLY outclassed Finn

Harps were utterly demolished

as Derby County’s goal scoring

machine firing on all cylinders

answered Dave Mackay’s

criticisms by ramming in 12

goals at the Baseball Ground

for the biggest win the club’s

history and just a goal short

of Cologne’s European

competition record 13-0

scoreline against Union of

Luxembourg.”

For the second leg played on

29 September 1976 in Finn

Park, Derby as promised sent

a full-strength squad to Finn

Park despite the result of the

tie not being in doubt. The

English first division club also

bought up 200 stand tickets

for the game as a goodwill

gesture. A small crowd,

not unsurprisingly, of 2,217

were recorded as being in

attendance.

Harps scored in the first

minute. Joe Healy attacked

down the wing before sending

over a cross which was

headed down by Colin Todd

to Roy McFarland. McFarland

in attempting a pass back,

overhit his pass and the ball

went over the keeper’s head

and into the net.

The equaliser came after

twenty one minutes, Todd saw

his shot rebound off the post

into the path of Kevin Hector

who side-footed the ball into

the net from six yards. Derby

took the lead on thirty-two

minutes when a James cross

found Hector eight yards from

goal and he had time and

space to hold off the challenge

from Sheridan, turn and slot it

past Murray in goal.

Not unsurprisingly the

second half saw the pace of

the game fall as it became

no more than an exhibition

match. Derby added a third

nine minutes from time when

Irishman Tony Macken ran at

the defence and created the

space for George to shoot past

Murray. As the game moved

into injury time, a firm shot

from Rioch could not be held

by Murray and it fell into the

path of George who pushed it

into the net.

The recently published book

Rams in Europe gives some

indication of the viewpoint

from Derby and they had this

to say of their visit to Donegal

“Finn Park is a cramped, non-

Gerry Murray saving from Kevin Hector in Finn Park.

league standard ground in

the small town of Ballybofey

in County Donegal”. And

the pitch was described by

Kevin Hector as ‘like playing

on a sponge it was so soft

underfoot.’ It also described

their journey as “Although the

distance to the away match

involved was not as far as

some of the trips they had

previously undertaken, it was

certainly one of the longest.

It took a five-and-a-half-hour

coach journey from Dublin to

the Londonderry border area.

As the bus entered Ulster, the

political situation at the time

made it necessary for there to

be armed British troops on the

team bus.”

This game was played in sometimes testing conditions as we got the four seasons in an hour and a half of football.

As Ballybofey were warming up, it looked like it was going to be a sunny afternoon, but as Keadue emerged fashionably from the dressing rooms, the dark clouds gathered above Emerald Park as if Keadue were announcing that “we mean business”.

Well maybe not, as it was Ballybofey who came flying out of the blocks and put the Keadue defense under pressure from the off, forcing the normally reliable Keadue defence into numerous

mistakes, resulting in no fewer than three corners for Ballybofey in the opening 5 minutes. Ballybofey failed to convert any off their early chances, but continued to Keadue under pressure for the 1st twenty minutes. Keadue relied on the counter attack but couldn’t force the away keeper into any saves. The Ballybofey keeper had to leave the park due to a twisted ankle and were forced to put one of their outfield players in goal.

This seemed to spur Keadue on in the second half and they went at the away teams defense from the off forcing the make shift keeper into a few vital saves.

However it was Ballybofey who took the lead when they capitalised on some poor defending and refiled into the bottom corner to make it one against the run of play. Keadue continued to dominate the rest of the game but couldn’t make their dominance pay until ten minutes from time when Corey Gallagher fired them level to make the score 1-1.

With nothing more to play for both teams seemed happy to play out the draw with Ballybofey went onto play a play off vs Bonagee to try and remain in the first division but were defeated by Bonagee United and as a result were relegated to Division 2.

Playing under the parish name of st. Columbas FC, Drumoghill FC as we now know them, joined the ranks of the Donegal Junior league in 1975. they have been present in the league ever since apart from two terms. From 1984 until 1988 they competed in the Winter / Hospital leagues and from 1995 until 2001 they had a spell in the ulster senior league. Drumoghill were managed by seamus Neely and Kieran o’

Donnell, both in a player / manager role, and Johnny Kelly throughout their early years in the Donegal league. the club enjoyed reasonable success during this period. During this first spell in the Donegal League stalwarts such as seamus Mc Ginty and the Quinn brothers, Danny and Hughie, were notable members of the teams that lined out. In 1980 the name of the club changed from st. Columbas to Drumoghill Celtic

Football Club. the club at this time also a dopted an all red playing kit.

When the club returned to the league, after their excursion to the saturday leagues of the day, they re- joined in Division three. Having developed talented players such as Gerard sharkey, Paul lynch, shaun Dolan, laurence Mc Connell, Paul Mc Donagh, Kevin Neely, seamus Crossan, Michael Mc Ginty, Michael

Morning, Roger Holmes and Gerard Mc laughlin it was almost inevitable that success would soon follow. the addition to the panel of big names at the time such as Jessy Purtill, Paddy Ward, Charles Mc Cahill, James Malseed and Jimmy Doherty all but guaranteed silverware in the seasons ahead.

Having just missed out on promotion at the first attempt Drumoghill Celtic made no mistake the following season when they won the Division three title in style scoring over one hundred goals in the process. In season 1991/’92 the club finished as runners-up to lifford Celtic in Division one and in so doing booked their place amongst the cream of junior soccer in Donegal in the Premier Division. With a reserve team now playing in the Donegal saturday league this wasn’t to be the end of the club’s achievements for the season. The Sunday team finished as runners-up to lifford Celtic in the area Final of the FaI Junior Cup. the reserves were runners-up, to lifford Celtic Reserves, in the Willie Duffy saturday Division. the Reserves tasted glory when they defeated Donegal Town Reserves in the final of the Downtown Cup.

these were glorious years in the history of Drumoghill soccer. 1992/’93 saw the sunday team retain their Premier Division status. the Reserves, having tasted glory, were hungry for more success and ended the season by bringing a ‘Double’ triumph to ‘the Moss’ as the club’s home ground has always been known. the team outfought Downtown united to secure the saturday league title and against the same opposition they came out on

top in the final of the Downtown Cup.Despite this success the club still had a hunger for more silverware. their main aim was to capture the Premier Division league title. by the start of the 1994/’95 season team manager Danny Mc Connell had acquired the services of Mickey Forde, sean Doherty, Declan o’ Donnell, Martin Roarty and evan logan. these players added the strength needed for a long league campaign in the top flight and by the end of the season Drumoghill Celtic would have won the Premier Division title.

Having claimed the league’s top prize the Drumoghill club met Keadue Rovers in the final of the Sportsman Cup a week later. The final went to penalties but it was Drumoghill who came out on top and completed the ‘Double’ as their Reserves had done two years previously.

as league Champions, Drumoghill Celtic had earned the right to join the ulster senior league. this they did and there they stayed until 2001. shaun o’ Donnell was at the helm

on the teams return to the Donegal league. the club again started to make steady progress under o’ Donnell. Kieran o’ Donnell took over as manager in 2004 with a philosophy of a young home grown team. With Kieran in charge the team started to move up the divisions. a play- off victory over Castlefin Celtic at the end of the 2005/’06 season saw the club promoted to Division one.

after consolidating their Division one status in the 2006/’07 season they were on the move again a year later. they completed their 2007/’08 league campaign as runners-up to lifford Celtic and returned to the Premier Division having finished in one of the two automatic promotion spots. after been relegated in the intervening years Drumoghill again returned to the Premier Division at the end of the 2010/’11 season, this time as runners-up to eany Celtic. 2011/’12 brought relegation to Division one but the club are determined to return to the Premier Division at the end of the 2012/’13 season.

Shay Given was born

April 20th, 1976 and is

from the town of Lifford,

Co. Donegal.

Given’s footballing

career began at local

He was propelled into

the limelight when he

played in the Football

performances for the

club attracted attention

from Glasgow Celtic, and

he was invited to train

during a pre-season tour

of Ireland in 1991. Given

signed for the club a

year later, which was at

the time managed by

Liam Brady.

Given spent two years

at Celtic in the Scottish

League. Despite being

named to the substitutes

on 1 January 1994,

Given never made a

during the 1995–96

season. He played in five

games for the Swindon

before returning to

Blackburn at the end of

1995.

Given was sent on loan

again in January 1996,

this time to Division One

side Sunderland. Given

kept 12 clean sheets

during his 17 games

for the club,[12] and

formed part of the team

who won promotion

to the Premier League

as champions.[9] His

performances on loan

impressed Kenny

Dalglish, who had

recently been appointed

manager of Newcastle

United, and prompted

him to sign Given again.

Given signed for the

North-East club in the

summer of 1997 for a fee

of £1.5 million.

Given was one of the

first signings of then-

newly appointed

manager Dalglish.

Given made his debut in

Newcastle’s 2–1 home

victory over Sheffield

Wednesday on 9 August

1997 and immediately

established himself in

the first team, beating

fellow goalkeepers Pavel

Srníček, Shaka Hislop

and Steve Harper to the

position.

Newcastle advanced

to the final of the FA

Cup, and Given played

the whole match as the

team were defeated 2–0

by league champions

Arsenal. he club also

progressed to the final

the following year, but

Given was replaced

by Steve Harper as

Newcastle lost 2–0 in

the final, this time to

Manchester United.

In November 1997, Given

conceded a strange goal

against Coventry City

when, after collecting a

cross, he rolled the ball

out in preparation to

make a long clearance.

However, he had

Shay Given lining out for Ireland

may 2013 DFlMagazine 23

forgotten

that

Coventry

striker Dion

Dublin was

still behind him,

and Dublin quickly

took advantage of the

situation by rolling the

ball into the empty net.

The coincidence of the

goalscorer’s name quickly

led to the popular word

game among football fans

that Given “is the only

Irishman who doesn’t

know where Dublin is”

and the goal itself is still

regularly featured on lists

compiled of bizarre goals.

Given submitted a

written transfer request

in December 2000, after

failing to regain his place

in the first-team from

Steve Harper after a thigh

injury had ruled him

out of a match against

Leeds United. Manager

Sir Bobby Robson stated

at the time: “A lot of

clubs have a very good

goalkeeper and one who

stands by. I think we have

two keepers—and Harper

is proving that—who can

play in the Premiership”.

The club rejected Given’s

request, which was

Shay in his Aston Villa colours

then withdrawn by the

goalkeeper, who later

stated that his “intention

was simply to express

[his] frustration at being

left out of the team,”[18]

and that he “never had

any intention of actually

leaving the club.” An

injury to Harper led to

Given being recalled to

the first team, and he kept

his place for the rest of

the season.

In the 2001–02 season,

Given played in every

Premier League

match as Newcastle’s

previously unexpected

title challenge ended

in a fourth-place finish

in the league. Given

was selected in the

PFA Team of the Year

and Newcastle’s league

position meant that

they would enter the

qualifying stages of the

UEFA Champions League

the following season.

During the summer he

competed in the 2002

FIFA World Cup, but

could not prevent the

Republic of Ireland being

eliminated by Spain after

a penalty shoot-out. In his early days playing for Sunderland FC

may 2013 DFlMagazine 25

Given again found

himself competing with

Steve Harper during

the following season.

After a 5–0 qualifying

round win, Newcastle

progressed to the group

stages of the Champions

League. He played in the

first three group matches,

all of which Newcastle

lost. Given found himself

out of the team for the

next two games, as

Harper replaced him in

goal. Given returned for

the final group match

against Feyenoord in

the Netherlands, and

Newcastle’s 3–2 win

meant that they qualified

for the second round.

Internazionale scored

four times past Given

as Newcastle lost 1–4 in

their opening match in

the second group stage.

Newcastle conceded

a further three times

away to Barcelona, beat

Bayer Leverkusen at

home and in Germany,

and drew with Inter at

San Siro, however a 2–0

loss at home against

Barcelona meant that

the club finished third in

their group and failed to

qualify for the knockout

stages. Given played

every game in the second

round. Given played all 38

league games for the club,

as well as his 12 European

appearances, as the team

finished in third place

in the Premier League,

meaning the club would

enter the Champions

League qualifying round

in 2003–04.

Having finished third in

the league in May 2003,

Given and Newcastle

lost 4–3 on penalties

to Partizan Belgrade

early in the 2003–04

season, meaning that

Newcastle failed to reach

the group stages of the

Champions League. The

club instead qualified

for the UEFA Cup, where

they reached the semi-

finals. A fifth-place finish

in the league meant that

the club qualified for the

following season’s UEFA

Cup competition. Given

played in every one of the

club’s league matches for

a third successive season,

as well as all 13 European

games.

The following year saw

Graeme Souness replace

Sir Bobby Robson as

Newcastle manager after

an early spell of poor

form. Given overtook

Alan Shearer as having

played in the most

European matches for

the club on 16 September

2004 in a game against

Bnei Sakhnin, and Given’s

12 European and 3 FA

Cup appearances helped

Newcastle reach the UEFA

Cup quarter-final and the

FA Cup semi-final. Given

missed two Premier

League games as the club

finished in 14th place.

Although the club entered

the Intertoto Cup in

2005–06, a defeat by

Spanish club Deportivo

de La Coruña meant

that they did not qualify

for further European

competition that season.

Given played in all of the

club’s league matches

as they finished in

seventh position and

he signed a new five-

year contract with the

club in the summer.

His performances for

Newcastle led to Given

being named in the

Premier League’s Team of

the Season. Given played

in all of the club’s FA Cup

games as they reached

the quarter-finals, and

captained the team for

three games during Alan

Shearer’s absence.

On 17 September 2006,

Given suffered a one-

centimeter tear in his

bowel after a tackle by

West Ham United striker

Marlon Harewood.

Doctors likened the injury

happen in a car crash.

[39] Then-manager

Glenn Roeder signed ex-

Newcastle veteran Srníček

as cover for Harper,[40]

and youth goalkeeper

Tim Krul played a full

match in Newcastle’s

0–1 UEFA Cup win at

Palermo on 2 November.

Given returned on 18

November for Newcastle’s

1–1 Premier League

draw at Arsenal, and

ended the season with

22 league appearances

as the club finished in

13th place, and reached

the last 16 of the UEFA

Cup. Given did make his

400th appearance for the

club during the season,

however, in a New Year’s

Day match.[9][41] Given’s

2007–08 season was

prematurely ended by

injury in February when

he had an occurrence of

an old groin injury in the

game with Manchester

United.

The opening months

of Newcastle’s 2008–09

season were blighted

by ownership and

managerial turmoil,

as well as numerous

injury problems. This

manifested itself on

the pitch as the club

struggled to direct itself

clear of the relegation

zone. On 2 January

2009, following the

5–1 defeat at home

against Liverpool, the

player’s lawyer released a

statement saying that his

client was “considering

his future” at Newcastle,

and requested permission

to talk to representatives

of Manchester City on

28 January after the club

made a bid of £5 million

which was subsequently

rejected.[44] Newcastle

manager Joe Kinnear had

already stated that the

club was “not interested

at all in selling him”,[43]

and described the amount

on offer for Given as

“insulting”.

However, on 30 January,

Shay Given training with Ireland

28 May 2013 DFlMagazine

Page 29: DFL Magazine Issue 8 May

it was reported that

Newcastle had given

permission for Given

to enter talks with his

suitors.

After a transfer fee

initially reported to be

around £8 million was

agreed between the

clubs, Given signed

for Manchester City

on 1 February, with the

transfer window set

to close the following

day. The news was

disappointing for

Newcastle fans who felt

that Given left the club

in a poor situation with

many thinking that

had Given delayed his

decision to leave until the

summer then Newcastle

would have subsequently

survived relegation

to the Championship

because Given was such

a fantastic goal keeper

who could have stopped

many of the goals that the

Toon conceded towards

the end of the dreadful

campaign. Although

the fee for Given was

expected to be around

£8 million, in February

2009 Newcastle United

Managing Director Derek

Llambias revealed at a

supporters panel meeting

that Given had been sold

for an initial £5.9 million.

Given was 34 games away

from breaking Newcastle

United’s appearance

record held by Jimmy

Lawrence.

Shay Given playing for

Manchester City

On 1 February 2009 Given

signed with Manchester

City on a four-half-year-

contract for £7 million.

[49] He was formally

paraded as a Manchester

City player on 5 February

2009, and was assigned

squad number 37. In

the subsequent press

conference, he criticised

Newcastle’s management

for not trying hard

enough to keep him at

the club. He also said

that “By coming here I

thought I could be at a

club that is challenging

for honours. I didn’t

want to finish my career

regretting not taking up

this offer.”Given kept a

clean sheet in a man of

the match performance

in his debut, a 1–0 win

against Middlesbrough

on 7 February.

With Joe Hart leaving the

club on loan, Given was

given the squad number 1

for the 2009–2010 season.

He made his 400th

League appearance on

5 October 2009 against

Aston Villa.

On 5 December 2009 he

made an outstanding

penalty save from

Frank Lampard to deny

Chelsea an equalising

goal. City went on to

win 2–1. The same

month, Daily Telegraph

football correspondent

Henry Winter named

Given as Premier

League Goalkeeper of

the Noughties. While

team captain Kolo Touré

was on international

duty, Given was given

the captain’s armband

by manager Roberto

Mancini, who described

the Donegal-born player

as “one of the five best

goalkeepers in the world”.

He dislocated his

shoulder during a match

against Arsenal on 24

April, ruling him out for

the rest of the season.

may 2013 DFlMagazine 29

Page 30: DFL Magazine Issue 8 May

On 14 August 2010, Given

was dropped from the

Manchester City starting

XI for their opening

league game against

Tottenham and replaced

by Joe Hart. Hart became

City’s permanent first

choice keeper, although

Given played enough

during the season

to receive an FA Cup

winners’ medal. Given

played only one game In

England since being put

on the bench. A defeat to

West Brom it the league

cup. He challenged Hart

to the first choice spot,

though missed out. He

played two Europa league

matches that season as

well.

Aston Villa

On 18 July 2011, Given

joined Aston Villa for a fee

believed to be around £3.5

million.[58] He signed

a five-year contract,

meaning that he will be

40 when his contract

expires.[59] Given made

his Villa debut in a pre-

season friendly victory

over Walsall on 21 July.

He was substituted at half

time for Andy Marshall,

keeping a clean sheet as

the score was 2–0 to Villa.

[60] Given kept another

clean sheet on 27 July

2011 in the 2011 Barclays

Asia Trophy in Hong

Kong in which Aston

Villa beat Blackburn 1–0.

This was his second clean

sheet in two appearances

for Aston Villa.

On 13 August 2011, Shay

played his first Premier

League match for Aston

Villa. They played Fulham

in a 0–0 draw which

means Shay kept his first

clean sheet for Aston Villa

in his first start for them.

In September 2011, Given

was reunited with Terry

Gennoe at Aston Villa.

After four years out

of the game, Gennoe

was named as the new

first team goalkeeping

coach, replacing Rafa

Gonzalez. He had

previously coached Given

at Blackburn Rovers and

Newcastle United.

On 3 December, Given

suffered a torn hamstring,

leaving him out of the

team until January.

After a disappointing start

to the 2012–13 season,

Given lost his first team

place to Brad Guzan

after two league games.

However, Given was

selected for an FA cup

match against Ipswich.

Despite conceding a goal,

Villa won 2-1. He was also

selected for the league

cup Semi finals against

Bradford. They lost the

first leg 3-1. Though,

they won the second

leg 2-1. But Aston villa

were eliminated from the

tournament. Given was

selected for an FA cup

match against Millwall,

which Villa lost 2-1.

[edit]International career

Given represented the

Republic of Ireland

at youth level before

earning five caps for

the Republic of Ireland

national under-21 team.

[1] Although he did

not become a regular

first team player for

Blackburn Rovers, Given’s

performances while on

loan at Swindon and

Sunderland led to him

being called up to the

Republic of Ireland squad

in 1996. He made his

debut for the national

team on 27 March 1996,

30 May 2013 DFlMagazine

in a game against Russia.

Although Ireland failed to

qualify for the 1998 FIFA

World Cup or UEFA Euro

2000, Given established

himself as first-choice

goalkeeper. He played

in all of his nation’s

games at the 2002 FIFA

World Cup. With draws

against Cameroon and

Germany and a 3–0 win

against Saudi Arabia, the

team reached the second

round of the competition.

Meeting Spain in the

knockout round, Ireland

forced penalties with the

score at 1–1 at the end of

extra time. Three missed

penalties for Ireland

ended their participation

in the tournament, and

Spain progressed to the

next round.

Given was part of the

team for most of the

2006 FIFA World Cup

qualifying campaign;

however a draw with

Switzerland meant

Ireland failed to qualify

for the finals of the

competition in Germany.

He equalled Packie

Bonner’s record of 80

caps against Slovakia on

28 March 2007. Given

obtained his 100th cap

against Montenegro

at Croke Park, Dublin

on 14 October 2009 in

a 2010 FIFA World Cup

qualifying game. Ireland

reached a qualifying

playoff against France,

but were controversially

eliminated by a goal

scored after Thierry

Henry handled the ball.

Given was part of the

team that secured

qualification for UEFA

Euro 2012 with a play-off

victory against Estonia.

[69] Given played in the

Euro 2012 championship

as Ireland were

eliminated in the group

stage.

Given is the most capped

Republic of Ireland player

as he holds 125 caps and

had 55 clean sheets in

the process. He gave his

international playing fees

to charity.

On 13 August 2012, Given

announced on Twitter

his decision to retire from

international football,

describing it as an

unforgettable experience

to play for his country.

Given retired holding

the record for the most

capped Irishman, though

Robbie Keane was closing

in on the record.[72][73]

Due to Given’s lack of

playing time with his

club Aston Villa, there

was speculation that

he would make himself

available for selection as

part of Ireland’s 2014 FIFA

World Cup qualification

campaign. On 14 January

2013, it was announced

that Given was once

again available for

international selection.

It remains to be seen if

Shay will be selected for

International duty ever

again, but he will go

down as a living legend in

Donegal and in the island

of Ireland.

How to keep fit while injured? How to keep fit while being injured is a problem most people who participate in sport find themselves having at some time or other. Not being able to participate in your chosen sport doesn’t mean you can’t train or keep fit. It’s important that you keep some level of fitness so when your recovery period is complete you are ready to return to action as soon as possible.

No matter what type of injury you have there are normally alternative exercises that can be done while still resting the injured area. So let’s take a look at some of the body parts that may be affected by injury and see what alternative exercises you can still do to keep fit.

ankle injuriesTwisted and sprained ankles are common for most people who participate in sports. This can mean being out of action for a short time, but you can still keep fit by doing other activities like rowing, or any other alternative that concentrates on the upper body and won’t put stress on the ankle.

Upper body circuit training with weights is another alternative. Dumbbell curls or lifts, bicep curls, lateral lifts and a few other exercises can all be done from a seated position without putting any stress on the ankle.

Pulled muscles (Lower Limbs)It’s sometimes tempting to continue trying to play through a pulled muscle, because once the muscle has warmed up the pain decreases and the injury doesn’t feel as bad.The muscle really does need to be rested however and you should follow the RICE method of, rest, ice, compression, elevation.

You can still do some exercises without putting the muscle under any great strain.Try throwing a medicine ball with a partner. Throwing it back and forth for 20-30 minutes will give your abs and shoulder muscles a great workout. Some gyms have upper extremity bikes that allow the user to “pedal” with the arms while seated, these can be effective in giving you an alternative workout.

Most players of racquet sports are familiar with tennis elbow and it can be quite a painful injury. If you get tennis elbow you should stop playing altogether and let it heal. Muscle strains and pulls in the arms aren’t as common but they do happen to cricketers, goalkeepers, and in sports where a throwing action is applied, or in sports like weightlifting and boxing.

The one thing you can still do if you have injured an upper limb is run, and running and jogging are good ways of staying fit. Interval training with plenty of short bursts as well as side to side movements to stay flexible is ideal.

knee injuriesThe knee is a major weight bearing joint and so you may be restricted in the alternative activities that are available to you. You should talk to your doctor, trainer, or physiotherapist to see if cycling will aggravate the injury, if not this is a good replacement activity. Swimming using a pull buoy to give your legs support and to stop yourself from kicking is another alternative you might think about trying.

Back injuriesKnowing exactly what back injury you have is vitally important before you think about continuing with any alternative exercise. Back injuries that are muscle related have a quicker recovery time that other back injuries and walking if the pain will allow it, is a great way of keeping up cardiovascular fitness. You should discuss with your doctor any other forms of exercise he may think appropriate for the type of back injury you have.

shoulder injuryDamaging your shoulder can hinder your participation in many recreational sports. With arm injuries you want to avoid movements like throwing, serving at tennis, or even swimming. With particularly sore shoulder injuries even the arm-swinging motion needed for running can be too painful. You should avoid any overhead movements and any other arm positions that cause discomfort.

Try lower body weight training, running if possible, cycling, and stair climbing, or step aerobics.

So even if you are injured there’s no need for you to turn into a couch potato. Look at the alternatives and get out there and keep fit.

favourite activity of soccer

players. However,

playing soccer is not believed

to provide sufficient exercise

intensity over time

to improve fitness.

During a game of soccer,

however, concentrating on

team players and

opponents and controlling

the ball, or anxiety caused by

training or match

situations, may lead to heart

rates above what reflects the

actual workload.

To achieve valid exercise

intensities in soccer specific

training, the relation

between heart rate and oxygen

uptake has to be established.

Figure 1: Illustrates a small

There are players around the

outside of the pitch to act as a

How do we get a training

effect from this?

This is really simple play

at intensity; the coach will

manage this by time in and

out of play.

Conclusion

Aerobic endurance training

can be carried out in a more

soccer specific way

than plain running. So make

sure to challenging the aerobic

capacity in order to

make significant gains in

performance.

Background

In soccer a significant amount

of time is used to improve

player’s aerobic

capacity. However soccer

specific training drills has now

fulfilled this criteria in

the professional game.

Physiological, technical and

tactical skills are all important

to soccer

performance. Factors such as

acceleration, jump height and

the ability to release

energy are of major

importance. Because of the

length of the game at least 90%

of energy release must be

aerobic as a player runs an

average of 10k per game.

What does the

research say?

Previous studies have shown

a significant relation between

VO2MAX and

distance covered during a

match. Also findings from the

Norwegian league have

shown that teams at the top of

a league compared to those at

the bottom have

significantly higher overall

aerobic capacity. Therefore

fitness has as major

impact on performance.

What is the soccer player’s

favourite activity?

Liam Davenports deep cross

on 12 min was palmed away

by Connor Mc Colgan in

the QPS net and Mc Colgan

saved well from Brendan

Murphy on 15min. At the

tested Michael Mc Cole

with a shot from outside

the area, then on 19 min

James Curran floated in a

free which was headed back

across goal by Charlie Mc

effort was over the crossbar.

QPS took the lead on 21 min

when Raymond Buchanan

cross was headed out, it

fell to Odhran Mc Colgan

who volleyed past Mc Cole

from 18 yards. Mc Colgan

then intercepted a poor

clearance from Mc Cole

but Davenport got back to

clear and then a Mc Carron

effort was gathered by Mc

Cole. Redcastle then had

a spell of pressure forcing

three corners all taken by

Mc Cormick. The first fell

to Terry Mc Colgan who

shot into the side netting

and then James Curran

headed over the bar when

well placed. Mc Colgan in

the QPS goal then saved

well from Mc Cormick and

Brendan Murphy headed

a Eamonn Donnelly cross

wide just before the break.

Redcastle went in search

of the equaliser at the start

of the second half and

Donnelly’s rasping shot was

tipped over by Connor Mc

Colgan in the Swifts net.

Mc Colgan then saved efforts

from Murphy and Brian

Tracey. QPS went further

Dean Barron won the ball

couldn’t hold and Barron

following up to slide the ball

unlucky not to get on the

Redcastle pulled a goal back

Donnelly converted a

penalty. Redcastle went in

search of the equaliser and

Donnelly put in a dangerous

cross which drifted just wide.

Redcastle then had two frees

which were cleared by the

Swifts defence and QPS had

last action saw Redcastle

but the QPS defence cleared

as the final whistle blew.

illies Celtic  0       Clonmany shamrocks 5This match was played on

Wednesday of last week and

saw cup holders Clonmany

book a semi-final berth in

this year’s competition with

a deserved win over Illies.

In early action Gerard Mc

Daid and Paddy Doherty

threatened the visitors goal,

but their attempts were

off target as was Niall Mc

Daid’s effort from close in.

Clonmany took the lead mid

way through the half when

Mark Mc Laughlin latched

onto a long goal kick from

Patrick Harkin and drove to

the net. A few minutes later

their advantage was doubled

when Jason Doherty (T)

got on the end of a Liam

Hirrell free and steered the

ball home. The same player

got his second of the match

after 33 minutes when the

ball was set up neatly for

him to score with a tap in at

the back post. The visitors

held onto their 3 goal lead

at the interval despite Illies

coming close when Marty

Coyle rattled the crossbar.

The home side was out of

luck again immediately after

the break when Shane Devlin

had a shot blocked on the

line. However, Clonmany

struck for a fourth after 54

minutes when slack marking

in the Illies defence allowed

Michael Grant to find the net

following a corner. To their

credit Illies kept pressing

and Harkin had to be alert

and make a great save from

James Mc Gonagle after he

broke through the Clonmany

rearguard. With 10 minutes

to go the scoring was

complete when Alan Friel

seized on a poor backpass

and hammered to the net.

Culdaff F.C 2   Glengad utd 3Played under lights at a

blustery Caratra Park on

Saturday night, visitors

Glengad found themselves

trailing 2 – 1 at half time but

recovered in the second half

to go on and book a semi-

final slot. Aided by a strong

wind in the first half Culdaff

created early chances and

could have raced into a

commanding lead in the first

ten minutes. After 5 minutes

a Dean O’ Connor cross from

the right presented a great

chance to John Joe Doherty

but he missed a point blank

header from four yards out.

Shortly afterwards a Brendan

Mc Laughlin cross, this time

from the left, saw Conor O’

Brien head over from close

in. Glengad threatened mid

way through the half when

Stephen Mc Laughlin broke

clear on the right and set up

John G. Mc Laughlin but his

effort from 12 yards was just

off target. The home team

took the lead after half an

hour when a cross cum shot

from Doherty caused a mix

up between goalkeeper Mc

Laughlin and his defenders

and the ball travelled all

the way to the net. Culdaff

then had the chance to

double that lead when Mc

Laughlin brought down O’

Brien inside the  area but the

keeper redeemed himself

and saved O’Brien’s spot

kick. Five minutes before

half time, Glengad equalised

when Terence Doherty

capitalised on a defensive

mistake and scored from

inside the box to make it 1 –

1. However, Culdaff regained

the lead on the stroke of

half time when a long range

O’Connor shot was parried

by the keeper to Eugene

Mc Laughlin who drove

home. The visitors who

had advantage of the wind

in the second half had lots

of possession but created

few clear cut chances. They

made it 2 – 2 on 70 minutes

when J.G. Mc Laughlin’s

defence splitting pass found

Patrick Mc Dermott and

he lobbed the keeper from

inside the area. And Glengad

scored the winning goal with

10 minutes remaining when

Mc Dermott side footed

home from 5 yards to book

his side’s passage to the

semi-final.

The game was fast flowing

QPS had a glorious chance

after 4 min when Raymond

Buchanan crossed from the

from 6 yards he dragged

his effort wide, then a

Buchanan free was headed

wide by Kevin Wallace.

Clonmany broke forward

on the 9th min when Mark

Harkin in the Clonmany

goal had to be alert on 12

min when he punched a

Buchanan cross clear off

the head of Mark Wallace.

Harkin was called into action

moments later when Seanan

Mc Colgan’s corner was

headed out to Buchanan, his

low driven shot was blocked

and fell to Kevin Wallace and

Harkin made a great save

low to his right.

At the other end the lively

Mark Mc Laughlin made a

great run down the right and

was only denied by a great

tackle from Adam Harkin at

the expense of a corner, then

Paul Mc Laughlin floated

in a free which was turned

behind for another corner.

Connor Mc Colgan punched

the corner clear and another

Mc Laughlin free was headed

clear by Kevin Wallace.

Clonmany then had a great

chance when Mark Mc

Laughlin broke clear only

to see his shot rebound off

the base of the post. Martin

Donaghey then put in a free

for QPS which Barron got

his head to but Harkin saved

comfortably. Clonmany’s

Jason Doherty broke up field

and crossed but Brendan

Devlin’s effort sailed over.

Paddy Harkin was called into

action just before the break

punching a Mark Wallace

header clear before Barron

put a near post header just

over the crossbar on the

stroke of half time.

On the restart Brendan

Devlin had a shot just wide

and Mc Colgan turned a Joe

then gathered a Barron shot

at the second attempt, then

Clonmany’s Jason Doherty

made a mazy run into the

area which was scrambled

clear from a Clonmany

corner, the ball came back

off the post and was cleared.

A good ball by Simon

This was an entertaining game in Maginn Park and while Glengad had their chances defensive errors cost them in the end.Carn started well and on 2 minutes should have taken the lead after a sublime pass from Michael Byrne found Daniel Mclaughlin in the area and he rounded Martin Mclaughlin but was dumbfounded to see his effort crash off the post. Within minutes Glengad spurned a similar giltedged chance when john McDaid collected a short corner and crossed for the unamrked John G McLaughlin to head over from six yards.Glengad upped the pace and Daniel McDaid had a snapshot from the edge of the area which flew past the angle of post and bar before they took the lead on 24 minutes after Paul McLauglin lifted a free kick over the wall and

Aileach reserves got the draw they needed to clinch the reserve premier title despite QPS who required a win dominating the game.

The first half was spolied by a strong wind and rain although the second half was played in sunshine. Both teams took time to settle and adapt to the conditions with Aileach’s Stephen Doherty having an early shot which Gavin Gallagher in the visitors net held well. on the 7th min a good QPS move involving Fergal Buchannan and Stephen Mc Carron resulted in a corner which was taken by Paul Hegarty who found the head of Seannan Mc Colgan who’s effort was wide of the upright.

On 10 min Aileach’s Ciaran Craig picked out Gavin Doherty his cross fell to Liam Burke his shot was blocked by Mark Barron, Mark Duffy then put in a cross for the visitors which Mc Colgan diverted wide then the same player brought a fine save from David Mc Geady. Aileach’s defence then headed a Mc Carron cross behind before Mc Geady saved well from Fergal Buchannan.

The Point did find the net but it was ruled offside. The second half was played in better conditions with the visitors pressing for the important goal and Aileach counter attacking. Mc Colgan made a good run down the left and picked out Buchanan but he shot across goal. Then Mark Duffy’s

cross was headed down by Mc Carron to Paul Hegarty who dragged his shot wide.

At the other end Stephen Doherty broke on the left his dangerous cross was well held by Gavin Gallagher. Aileach then had another opportunity from Gregory Doherty’s free with Stephen Doherty flicking his effort wide.

QPS squandered a golden opportunity when Mark Duffy played Fergal Buchanan through for a one on one with Mc Geady with Mc Geady getting a vital hand to the ball to divert away from goal. Then Aileach’s Damian Barr headed a Gregory Doherty free over the bar. With the visitors pushing men forward Ruari Bradley broke
