In the pursuance of her daily duties she became the “go to” person for all aspects of Family and MWR activities. She has been instrumental in the execution of everything from personnel actions to the coordination of meeting and conferences .The example she set by her dedication to the directorate, the Garrison and the U.S. Army has become the benchmark that all that worked with her admired and now strive to achieve. The importance of laugh-ter and joy and the role that clowns play in bringing us happiness has been recognized by parents, physicians and politicians. After another successful Summer Camp, we at Fort Buchanan Child, Youth and School Ser-vices would like to welcome you and your chil-dren and youth back to our programs. As the new school year approaches we too are gearing up for autumn. Like many of you, we look to August as the natural time to re-register. In an effort to alleviate what can often be a long wait to meet with a representative, we ask that you call our ParentCentralServices office prior to coming in so that we can let you know what forms and documents you may need to com-plete your registration for the coming year. We hope to limit the time spent waiting and completing the process by making sure that you are as prepared as possible for your ap-pointment. Our ParentCentralServices of-fice is located at the Welcome Center, Bldg. 152, however it will be moving mid-July to Bldg. 1145 in Coconut Grove (near the Middle School Program). You may always reach the office at (787) 707-3787/3434.

We thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Health benefits of playing golfMost people do not think of golf as an active sport. For years it has been categorized as a leisure sport and not necessarily associated with good health. However, latest studies in-dicate that golf can be very beneficial to good health.Research conducted by Neil Wolkodoff of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences (Denver, Colo.) was used to show roughly how many calories were burned playing an average 9-hole golf course. According to the article golfers who walk and carry their own bag burn 721 calories, golfers using a pull cart burn 718 calories, golfers walking with a caddie burn 613 calories and golfers riding in a golf cart burn 411 calories on average. Research has indicated that burning 2,500 calories per week can greatly reduce the risk of several medical conditions. Golf is a game where you can enjoy the com-pany of friends, enjoy the outdoors and the exercise is a bonus. Walking a normal golf course is equivalent to walking approximately 4 miles. Not only are you walking but you are also swinging the golf club creating stretching exercise and improving motor skills. For those golfers that normally ride a golf cart, simply leaving the cart on the path and walking to your ball occasionally will also improve the health benefits. Even an hour on the Driving Range will help burn calories and improve your health. The next time you think you need to get some exercise, think about playing golf with some friends. Playing golf may not be equal to working out at the gym or playing basketball but it is exercise in a friendly surrounding, enjoying friends and nature. Remember, if you are planning to start any type of exercise program, consult your doctor first.
