DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
Young people are under greater pressure today than ever before. Whether leaving school without the skills they need or struggling to find work, far too many end up believing that no matter how hard they try their life just isn’t going to work out.
However, our mission is to help children and young people achieve their full potential. We are optimistic we can help them have a better future. As an independent charity working hand in hand with DHL, we see the possibilities in each young person. We want to help them become all they are capable of being.
This annual review shows how by working with DHL and all its employees we bring together the people, the funding and the know-how to change lives.
We hope it will inspire you and convince you that together we can make more of a change than any of us could make on our own.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
With over 1,000,000 young people not in work, education or training, many see only a bleak future. Employers are looking for work experience, but how do young people get experience if they cannot get a job?
The Foundation helps break this cycle through its partnership with The Prince’s Trust and Career Academies UK.
Six Prince’s Trust Get intos and one Team programme were supported in 2011/12, giving direct experience and skills to the young people; 85% of whom moved on into work, education or employment. The Foundation was shortlisted in the Business Charity Awards for this hard-hitting employability programme.
Three Career Academies in Luton, Feltham and Nuneaton enriched the learning of business studies students and enhanced the links between business and education. Five DHL paid internships helped students get superb work experience, while employees further supported students through a mentoring scheme.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
Many young people have little self-belief, low aspirations and can’t see how to change their future. We help them look forward with anticipation.
It’s the intensity and immediacy of the experience that makes Outward Bound courses so life-changing. By taking them out of their comfort zones, young people have no option but to discover and use the strength of their team, their own skills and their inner resources. Nearly 300 disadvantaged young people attended a 5-day Outward Bound course and 30 DHL employees acted as mentors.
Each mentor committed to raise a minimum of £500 for The Outward Bound Trust’s General Bursary Fund and the money they raised was match funded by the Foundation.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
Trucks pose unique dangers to children. Aimed at the 7 to 11 year old age group, just starting to travel independently, Trucks and Child Safety uses a lorry as a memorable visual aid.
Over 300 volunteer demonstrators across the country go into schools and community groups, to bring the dangers of lorries to life for children.
In the last academic year over 36,000 took part in the interactive and informative demonstration, backed up by a teacher’s pack full of classroom ideas to reinforce learning.
Wonderful programme. It was a very useful and practical lesson on the dangers of trucks.

Now in its fourth year, the Community Heroes awards recognise the fundraising and volunteering work of DHL employees. By publicising the behind-the-scenes work, we
hope to encourage others to come forward, motivate those already involved and also to make a financial contribution to causes close to the hearts of employees.

As corny as this might sound; seeing the amount the business is doing in local communities around the country made me feel proud to work for DHL.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
What is important to individual employees, is important to the Foundation. No programme demonstrates this as clearly as Match It! and with the launch of Transform It! early in 2012, our support of local activity goes from strength to strength.
In 2011 the Match It! scheme added £309,755 to the £445,245 raised by employees, who also volunteered 40,777 hours. This represents a 7% increase in donations and a 20% increase in volunteering and reflects the extra emphasis which has been placed on getting employees to use their skills within the community.
Transform It! was only launched at the end of February 2012, but already it has generated a lot of enthusiasm within DHL. Grants of between £5,000 and £15,000 are available from the Foundation to enable employees to work with community groups to transform facilities and the lives of young people. Projects are expected to provide significant volunteering opportunities for both employees and local young people.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
In times of financial stress, one unexpected bill can push you from coping to facing disaster. So it’s good to have somewhere to turn to when you need help.
Faced with unexpected costs, which through no fault of their own they just can’t meet, the Foundation will help both employees and pensioners where it can, through Helping Hands.
I applied to Helping Hands and they paid for my car tax to let me get to and from hospital and also for me and my family to go on a break after chemo finished. It gave us all such a boost.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
Too many young people end up with little self-belief, few skills, and have little hope for their future.
In the year ahead the Foundation will continue to work with partner organisations and mobilise DHL employees, to help young people take back control of their lives. By harnessing the professional skills of DHL employees we hope to instil a belief that young people can change their own future.
So volunteering will be a big focus again for us in 2013/14. A flow of grant money into community projects will come from the recently launched Transform It! programme. With higher than expected numbers of groups already having passed through the first stage, we will soon be making grants to transform community facilities across the country.
Each project is expected to provide significant volunteering opportunities for DHL employees and change to the lives of children or young people for the better.
Match It! continues as a core programme engaging the widest number of employees. We anticipate an increase in applications as a result of the DHL Volunteer initiative.
By continuing to develop programmes and strengthen communication to UK employees of DHL, we will increase engagement in our activities. For example Trucks & Child Safety should reach 120,000 over the next three years.

DHL UK FOUNDATIONANNUAL REVIEW 2012
It will be challenging, as the economy continues to make people uncertain of their own future prospects and potentially reluctant to take time out of their working day.
Communication is key. ‘Step Forward’ is the start of a campaign to convince more employees that they can help young people. At its core is the simple idea that we can all make a contribution. As you have seen throughout this review, it may be a small change, for just one person, but together all these small steps will take us on an exciting journey.
