Two main types of diabetes

• Type 1 diabetes - treated withinsulin (and diet and physical

activity) - normally diagnosedunder 40 years old

• Type 2 diabetes - treated withdiet and physical activity plussometimes tablets and/or insulintoo - normally diagnosed over age

of 40

Facts and Figures

• Over 2.8 million people diagnosed in the UK.

• As for the undiagnosed, that figureis now estimated as being up to850 thousand

• Around £9 billion a year spent ontreating diabetes and itscomplications by the NHS.

What causes Type 1diabetes? 

• Nobody knows why the cells thatproduce insulin are damaged

• Likely cause is the body having anabnormal reaction

• Maybe triggered by a viral or other

infection

• You are more at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes if it runs in yourfamily

factors• Over the age of 40 for white people
